The Los Angeles nighttime breeze blew by, allowing the palm trees to gently sway along. Usually, the crickets could be heard by the residence of the luxurious gated community but a party was being thrown.
The perfectly mowed lawn of one of the mansions was covered in all sorts of trash as high school students came in and out of the house. A couple of them stood around in the lawn with red solo cups in their hands. Booming trap music could be heard from outside. Inside, the base vibrated against their bones as they yelled in order to hear each other over the eardrum-breaking music. Smokey clouds filled the air of the crowded mansion as drama played out in every corner. But then, everyone inside of the house dropped what they were doing and quickly filled out to the backyard where the pool was.
A couple of bloody, beaten up bodies laid around the perimeter of the pool. Spectators who had been in the area before the rest of the party goers had arrived had their hands covering their mouths and their eyeballs popping out of their eye sockets. Two people were recording the whole scene.
They saw the girl with jet black hair straddling a girl with a tan that made her skin look like an orange. The girl with jet black hair grabbed the girl by the top of the tube top she wore and began to punch her repeatedly in the face.
The music from the party was still playing loudly in the background but the students grew quiet as they watched the scene.
Then, when the girl with jet black hair was done, she dropped the orange-tan girl lifelessly onto the grown and slowly stood up. Her knuckles were dripping with a mixture of blood from the people she attacked and her own blood. A giggle ripped out of her as she tilted her head up to the shining moon above.
Akari opened her eyes and frowned. Why did I dream about…that...? She was dragged back to the current situation when a bump forced her to hit her head against the window.
She sat on a bus with the rest of Class 1-C on the way to Kyoto. Her seatmate, decided by a random draw, was Hanako who was currently scolding Daiki who sat behind her with his own seat partner for something he did. Across from her sat Momo and Takeru and they were huddled together, attempting to watch a drama on Takeru's phone in peace. In front of her sat Kazuha and Harumi and they were having a normal conversation.
Akari sighed. Something tells me that this is going to be an extremely long trip.
vii: just like the movie Naked.
Day 1:
"Yoooooo! We in Kyoto, y'all!" Momo yelled, holding up the metallic blue digital camera she had bought through Tik Tok. "Look at the sakura blossoms behind me!"
She pointed the camera to a tree covered in soft pink cherry blossoms. Takeru ran in front of the tree and posed.
"Takeru, move! You're in the way of my mini film!" Momo cried.
"Take a picture of me!" Takeru cried.
"Bruh! Fuck off!" Momo cried.
"Very quick! Please!" Takeru begged.
Sighing, Momo ended the video and pointed the camera at Takeru. Immediately, he began to pose as if he were a street fashion model.
Around them, the other students were enjoying their time in Kyoto.
Harumi was a couple of paces ahead of them and was filming a dance cover of a POPPY song for Tik Tok in front of one of the Kyoto palace gates.
Daiki was looking up places to eat with a couple of other students.
Hanako was reading up some history on the palace Harumi was dancing in front of.
Kazuha's hand was in Jun's as they slowly walked down the path and gazed lovingly into each other's eyes.
A local was busy hitting on Kumiko who batted her eyelashes. Kumiko shot Akari, who stood nearby, a cocky grin. Then, Kumiko gasped upon seeing that Akari was surrounded by a couple of locals who were asking for Akari's number.
"Irisawa! This is war!" Kumiko yelled at Akari.
All I'm doing is literally standing. Why is she so upset? Akari wondered as the boys began to fight over who Akari should call first.
"Lemme see the pics," Takeru demanded when Momo was done snapping him.
"We're here to have fun, but we're also here to win, remember?" Momo reminded Takeru as he flipped through the pictures that Momo had taken.
About two weeks ago, Momo and Takeru made up a plan to get Akari to go out with him before the Kyoto trip but it failed. Violently. They had come up with more plans since the failure of the first plan but those also hadn't been successful. However, the two weren't discouraged. Couples always form at the end of school trips so all Takeru had to do was make Akari fall for him during the trip.
Momo had been coaching him for days. She made him watch all sorts of romance dramas and tested him on the romantic gestures that the male leads did for their female leads. She even had him memorize swoon-worthy quotes. She was determined to make Takeru succeed at all costs.
Takeru looked up from Momo's camera and looked into her chocolate brown eyes. His blue-black eyes held her gaze as he lifted his hand to brush some of Momo's hair out of her face. Then, he took the cherry blossom that had fallen on Momo's hair and held it in front of her.
"Mmm...not smooth enough," Momo critiqued.
Takeru scowled and tossed the petal to the side. "What?"
"You need to look deep into my eyes, but don't make it weird! And move slowly but not too slow!" Momo sighed. "You're not ready."
"I am ready!" Takeru insisted.
"Well then, what was that!? That didn't make me swoon at all!" Momo cried.
Takeru shoved Momo's camera into his uniform's pocket. "I'll make you swoon right now!"
He grabbed her shoulders and rested his forehead against hers. "You swooning yet?" He asked in a low voice, deepening his gaze as he looked into her eyes.
"Nah. I'm creeped out though," Momo answered.
He nudged her chin with a finger so she could look up at him. Then, he caressed her face with both hands. "How about now?"
"Nope," Momo responded.
His thumb slowly ran across her plush, bottom lip. "Now?"
"Nu uh." There was no blush in sight on Momo's face.
Takeru sighed and let go of Momo. "You think I'm not ready but I promise you! I will make Akari mine!"
The students were staying at a traditional Japanese-styled hotel with a large public bath for boys and another one of equal size for girls. A long line of employees dressed in kimonos came out to greet the students.
"Ooh, we're like royalty!" A student cried.
An older looking woman stepped out of the line and bowed. "I am the head of this hotel. Welcome to Kyoto. I will show you to your rooms."
The first year class were conversing amongst themselves as they followed the head lady and the teachers to the area where their rooms would be. Then, room assignments were made.
"The Kansai dialect is so sexy," Takeru overheard a girl from Class 1-B say to a friend.
Takeru smirked and looked over at Akari who was waiting to be assigned a room. Since he is from Osaka, he could speak in the Kansai dialect, although he hasn't done it in a while.
Akari noticed Takeru approaching her and sighed. Here comes one of my simps. Once Takeru was standing next to her, she put her phone down and crossed her arms. "Yes?"
"Hey, shawty." Takeru proceeded to slyly move some of Akari's hair out of her face but Akari grabbed his wrist tight.
"Owowowowow!" Takeru cried, crouching down as Akari tightened her grip and gazed sharply into his eyes. "I'm sorry! Don't hate me!"
Momo, who was talking to Harumi, overheard the comotion and looked in the direction of the scene with Harumi and shook her head. "I told him he wasn't ready."
"?" Harumi simply looked at Momo with a confused look.
Since the students were three to a room, Momo's roommates were Harumi and Kazuha.
"I heard the other girls talking about going down to the public bath together," Harumi said as she pulled out her toiletry bag from her duffle bag. "I bet the water is very warm."
"I know...that steamy bath is calling my name!" Momo cried.
Suddenly, Kazuha entered the room. Momo and Harumi ended their conversation and smiled at Kazuha.
"Wel, well, well. Look who's back, Mrs. Akiyama-sama!" Momo teased.
Kazuha rolled her eyes. "Momo, fuck off!"
"Are you going to spend time with Akiyama-san tomorrow?" Harumi asked Kazuha.
"Yep." Kazuha bashfully looked around and Momo giggled.
"Kazuha and Jun, sitting in a tree! F-U-C-" Kazuha threw a pillow at Momo to get her to shut up.
"Momo, you're so annoying!" Kazuha cried before sighing. "Also, Takeru's outside. He told me that he needs to talk to you as soon as possible."
Momo blinked. "Oh, for real?"
Kazuha narrowed her eyes at her. "What are you two planning?"
"Whatever do you mean, my dear friend?" Momo asked innocently before quickly leaving the room.
Takeru was sitting on the floor with his back against the wall next to the door. Momo stepped out and closed the door behind her.
"Good! You're here!" Takeru stood up. "You gotta help me out!"
"With Akari, right?" Momo crossed her arms and began to think. "I can only do so much. It's all on you, so don't fuck it up."
Takeru quickly nodded his head. "Bet. So what's the plan?"
Day 2:
Momo was the first one to wake up. Kazuha was sound asleep in her bed while Harumi, who had fallen off of the bed sometime last night, was curled up like a cinnamon roll on the floor. The rising sun peeped through the hotel's washu paper windows, filtering out the intensity in the process. Momo glanced down at her phone and saw that it was 8am and it was Wednesday.
Time to start the day! She told herself.
At breakfast, Momo was able to meet up with Akari. Akari was put in a room with Hanako and another girl from Class 1-C. Akari was eating breakfast with them when Momo sat down across from her.
"Hey! I didn't catch you at the public bath last night!" Momo said.
"Being naked in front of strangers doesn't sound appealing to me," Akari responded, taking a bite out of her bread.
Momo tilted her head. "Really? Is it an American thing to feel that way about public baths?"
"You're trying to start a conversation with me," Akari said instead. "What do you want?"
"What do you mean?" Momo asked.
"I've noticed recently that every time you talk to me or invite me to do something with you, there's always some sort of catch or something ends up happening," Akari answered. Hanako, who was sitting next to Akari, looked at Momo with suspicion glinting in her eyes.
"What!? That's not true!" Momo cried.
Akari gave Momo a pointed look.
Momo sighed. "Fine, that's fair. But that's also why I've decided to approach you on my own accord with no strings attached. We should hang out today!"
Akari narrowed her eyes. "Why?"
"Simple. Because I feel like we should be friends after everything that we've been through." Momo even smiled in order to sell the deal.
Akari wasn't sold but knowing how persistent Momo could get, she reluctantly agreed. "Fine. We have free time later on today. What should we do?"
"Everyone! Stay together!" Kawaguchi-sensei called out before the tour guide began to give a brief history of the Ine Fishing Village they were touring.
"What's your type?" Momo asked Akari as she recorded the scenery.
"Why do you want to know my type?" Akari asked.
Suddenly, Akari was stopped by a guy asking for her number. Momo stopped recording and waited until the guy left to speak. "So that's your type?"
The guy was completely bald and wore blackout sunglasses with a couple of tattoos on his face. Akari scrunched up her nose. "No."
Kumiko, who was nearby, approached them. "I see you got another guy to give you their number."
"Literally, all I'm doing is looking and walking. I'm not doing anything else," Akari responded.
"Don't worry. I'm a very stubborn person! I'll get some more guys to give me their numbers so I can beat you!" Kumiko cried.
"Since when have we been in a competition!?" Akari asked Kumiko who had run off.
"Going back to our conversation," Momo continued. "If the guy from earlier isn't your type, what is?"
"Why do you want to know?" Akari asked.
"Because this is what girls who are friends usually talk about. We're both girls and I want to be your friend so this is why we're talking about this," Momo explained.
Akari sighed. "I don't know...I don't have a type."
"What? Come on. I know you at least have some sort of idea," Momo urged.
"I'm serious. The idea of being in love is extremely unappealing to me. I can barely be there myself. Now I need to be there for some other human being?" Akari shook her head. "Yeah, I'm good."
"What about traits that you find attractive?" Momo asked.
"You're pushing really hard," Akari observed.
"I'll go first!" Momo cried. "I like the quiet type. They're always in their thoughts, but that doesn't mean that they're an airhead. They just observe and think and don't blurt out the first thing that comes to their mind. And because they're always in their thoughts and always observing, they notice the little things."
Akari nodded. "I can see why you'd find that attractive." She glanced to the side and caught Takeru and Daiki pushing each other out of the way over something probably insignificant.
"Right? So what about you?" Momo asked.
"I don't find any traits attractive," Akari answered.
Why're you make this so hard!? Momo thought. "Come on. At least some traits that you admire."
"Fine." Momo smiled when Akari caved in. "I also like the quiet type."
"Ooh! And why?" Momo asked, inching closer to Akari.
Akari looked down at Momo. "Because they'll leave me the fuck alone."
Baffled, Momo stopped walking. She dropped her jaw and stared at Akari who continued walking with an unbothered expression plastered on her face. Takeru and Daiki, who were still pushing and shoving each other out of the way, rammed into Momo and the three of them fell to the ground.
"Ow! What's wrong with you two!?" Momo yelled. The other students walked around them but didn't forget to glance at them with nosy looks in their eyes.
Daiki was the first one to sit up. "Don't think that I don't know what you and Takeru are trying to do! In fact, I've known what you two have been doing for weeks now!"
Takeru sat up next. "What do you mean!?"
"You can't afford to pay the price that you-" Daiki shoved Takeru in the chest with his pointer finger, "-came up with! So you're trying to go out with Akari-sama! I want my beloved Akari-sama to notice me and love me back! I also want the money that I deserve since you decided to betray Akari-sama's love and build a shrine for my sister Kumiko! I will never let you succeed!"
Momo sat up, rubbing her head. "Is that why you were sitting next to Akari at the movies that one time?"
Daiki smiled proudly. "Damn right! I paid this guy to give up his seat!"
"You-" Takeru tackled Daiki back to the ground and the two of them engaged in a fist fight.
"Bruh!" Momo quickly hopped to her feet. "Cut this shit out! The locals are judging us!"
It was nighttime. Takeru and Momo still haven't succeeded.
"What do I do!?" Takeru whined, barging into the room Momo shared with Kazuha and Harumi and flopping face first onto Momo's bed once they were back in the hotel later that night.
Harumi, who was sitting on her bed with Momo and Kazuha, jumped upon seeing her cousin's arrival. The girls were busy going through the Tik Toks Harumi had recorded for the day and her picking out which ones to post. "Takeru? What are you doing here?"
"Ya! Takeru! Get out! We don't want any testosterone in here!" Kazuha hissed.
"Let me be depressed in peace!" Takeru said into the mattress.
Momo faked a pout. "It's so hard being a simp."
"What happened?" Harumi asked.
"Remember that bet he made with Daiki forever ago?" Momo asked.
Kazuha snorted. "They're still doing that?"
"I know," Momo answered.
Harumi smiled warmly at Takeru. "Everything will be okay, Takeru! There are so many fish in the sea!"
"No!" Takeru slipped out of the bed. "I'm gonna spill my heart to Akari right now and tell her that Daiki is the devil!"
"Takeru, don't you dare!" Momo warned.
He completely ignored her and ran out of the room.
"We gotta stop him," Momo cried.
"Wait, we?" Kazuha asked, saying "we" in Korean. "Why can't we let him ruin his own chances?"
"Because tomorrow, he'll bother us and beg us to fix the situation for him," Momo answered.
"Ah. You have a point," Kazuha realized.
The three of them jumped off of the bed and ran after him.
The room that Akari was in wasn't that far. Takeru, with his athletic long legs, was able to make it there in seconds. However, he wasn't the only one whose destination was Akari's room. Kumiko and Daiki were also standing in front of Akari's room.
"What are you doing here!?" Takeru sneered at Daiki.
"I'm here to warn Akari-sama to not pay any attention to a crazy person like you! Then, she'll thank me for warning her and will fall in love with me!" Daiki exclaimed.
Kumiko rolled her eyes. "Irisawa better open up so we can count the number of phone numbers we each have so far!"
"I will not let you ruin my chances with Akari!" Takeru yelled at Daiki.
Momo, Kazuha, and Harumi found Takeru and Daiki fighting each other for the third time today. They threw each other around, kicked, and even threw items at each other.
On the other side of the washu paper door, Hanako and Akari were watching Takeru and Daiki's silhouettes fight each other as if they were princesses in a palace drama witnessing two assassins fighting. All they needed were swords.
Hanako pulled her brown hair that had natural blonde highlights along the ends into her signature high ponytail. "I'm going to tell those two to cut it out!"
Akari yawned loudly and approached the door. All I want to do is sleep!
Deja vu or something? She wondered, scratching her head.
At breakfast, Momo met up with Akari and convinced her to spend the day with her. Then, the first year class toured the Ine Fishing Village and Momo tried to get Akari to tell her her ideal type in order to pass the information along to Takeru. While on the tour, Takeru and Daiki fought each other. After the tour, Takeru came to Momo, Kazuha, and Harumi's room and sulked before storming off to Akari's room. The girls ran after him and saw him fight Daiki with Kumiko, who had tagged along to compare the results of her competition with Akari, waiting for the door to open.
I swear, all of this feels familiar, Momo thought to herself as she watched Takeru and Daiki fight.
Hanako slid the room door open. "Ya! Matsuoka! Kamiyama! Stop fighting right now or I'll report you two!"
"Oh shit, it's Hanako!" Takeru and Daiki stopped but it didn't mean that they were done. They quickly grabbed Hanako's hands into their own hands.
"I need to talk to Akari very quickly!" Takeru cried.
"Let me talk to her first!" Daiki cried.
Akari leaned against the doorway with a tired and bored expression painted on her face. Takeru and Daiki saw her and began to plead their cases.
"Akari-sama! Don't pay attention to Takeru!" Daiki cried.
"No! Daiki is telling you lies!" Takeru cried.
This all happened before...or at least it feels like it's happened before, Momo thought.
Nah. This can't be deja vu. There's no way. Cuz it was literally Wednesday yesterday and the day before, Momo thought, sitting up in bed with her arms crossed. But then again. I could be wrong. Maybe that plan making with Takeru just made me have an extremely vivid dream of what could go wrong and I had that same dream twice because it's very likely that it'll happen.
She met up with Akari at breakfast and convinced her to hang out with her. While touring the Ine Fishing Village, Momo tried to coax Akari's ideal type out of her and Takeru and Daiki fought each other. After the tour, Takeru went to Akari's room after sulking in Momo's room and fought Daiki who was there. Kumiko was also there and she wanted to compare competition results. Momo, Kazuha, and Harumi tagged along in order to prevent the fight.
The dream truly did come true, Momo thought as Takeru and Daiki fought. Too vivid, though.
She looked to the side and saw Kazuha glance down at her phone. Kazuha glanced back at Takeru and Daiki, who were still fighting, before she slipped away and jogged down the hall.
That's right. When the situation cleared, Harumi and I didn't go back with Kazuha. I wonder where she's sneaking off to? She let the thought sit in her mind. Then, she brushed it off. Oh yeah. She has a boyfriend. She probably went to see him.
Something's not right, Momo thought, staring up at the ceiling.
The events of the day were repeating itself. No, the whole day was repeating itself.
How could this be happening? Momo thought to herself after she watched Kazuha sneak off.
The situation had even diffused itself the same exact way: the girl who was roommates with Hanako and Akari had called Kawaguchi-sensei and Kawaguchi-sensei arrived and scared the boys off.
"Oh. Where did Kazuha go?" Harumi asked after her mother told them to go to their rooms.
Harumi had asked that exact same question! Momo thought.
She frowned and scanned the area from where she stood. Even the placement of everything is exactly the same! She caught Akari's gaze and saw that a frown was also tugging at Akari's lips. Does she sense something's up too?
Akari tilted her head towards the hallway and Momo nodded.
Momo went back to her room with Harumi and waited for Harumi to fall asleep. Thankfully, Harumi was a fast sleeper. Then, Momo snuck out of the room.
Akari was leaning against the wall next to Momo's door with her arms crossed. When Momo came out, they began to walk down the hall. "Okay, what do you think is going on this time?"
Since it was late at night, the hotel wasn't bustling with guests. A soft silence fell over the place and the silence grew more prominent as the girls walked further down the hall away from the rooms where their classmates were.
"This might sound crazy, but I think we're in some kind of time loop," Momo answered.
A lot of crazy shit has been happening since I moved here. At this point, anything is normal, Akari thought. "Could Taro be behind this?"
"You brought Taro?" Momo asked.
"I left him behind. So actually, it couldn't be him," Akari answered. Momo still doesn't know that Akari had abandoned Taro at Hikaru's store.
"Then this has to be the work of some other fairy-lulu," Lilu said as a phone in Akari's hand.
"What? Again?" Momo asked.
"That's the only thing that makes sense-lulu. Similar to the incident with Kumiko, a fairy must have found a human and granted them the power to reverse time or something-lulu," Lilu responded.
Akari frowned. "So does that mean we'll have to transform into magical girls again?"
"No, unless you two can locate the fairy before they turn the human into a Bugaboo-lulu," Lilu answered.
Momo groaned. "It's gonna take forever!"
"I don't even know where to start searching." Akari's frown dipped.
Momo was about to say something else when she recognized two figures standing in the courtyard of the resort. Behind them was the entrance to the public baths of the hotel. She stopped walking. "Hold on. Is that Kazuha and Jun?"
Akari looked in the direction that Momo was looking in. "Who?"
Momo quickly pushed Akari behind a pillar and hid with her.
Kazuha and Jun were locked in a deep conversation and didn't see Momo and Akari's shuffling. Their faces had no signs of blissful joy that a high school couple on a class trip would have. Instead, disbelief and sorrow filled Jun's hazel eyes as Kazuha spoke. Kazuha hugged herself and hid her eyes in her bangs.
"What do you think they could be talking about?" Momo whispered to Akari.
"Why are we even eavesdropping when we should be looking for the fairy that's forcing us to go through a time loop?" Akari whispered back with a sigh. But Akari had an idea of what the conversation could be about.
"No...this can't be happening...Kazuha, I thought you loved me! Why are you breaking up with me!?" Jun's thoughts echoed in Akari's ears.
Akari sighed. It's just a breakup. No big deal. "Momo, can we go now?"
Jun reached to grab Kazuha by the arm, prompting Kazuha to harshly shake his grip off of her. She looked at him with disgust written on her face and said something that Momo couldn't catch. Then, after looking him up and down, Kazuha stomped off and made her way down the hallway in the direction of where their rooms were.
Jun, who was left alone, fell to his knees and dug his fingers into his fluffy brunette hair. His tears dotted the ground below and his body trembled.
Momo furrowed her eyebrows. "Kazuha broke up with Jun!? Why would she do that!? That makes no sense!"
"Does love even make sense?" Akari responded rhetorically.
"I'm gonna find Kazuha and get her to explain right now!" Momo proceeded to run after Kazuha but Akari grabbed her wrist and dragged her back.
"I think going after Kazuha right now is a bad idea," Akari answered. "I don't really know nor care much about the Art of Romance, but Kazuha's your friend, right? She'll tell you what happened on her own. Grilling her for information now will backfire on you. So let's get back to the current situation at hand. Once we deal with it, the next day will come and you'll finally hear what happened."
"I guess you have a point," Momo decided before looking back at Jun.
Jun slowly pulled out a wristwatch that was familiar to Momo. The watch wasn't all that expensive. It was just a cheap Spiderman wristwatch that Kazuha bought for Jun as a last day of school present back in junior high.
Kazuha had dragged Momo and Harumi to the mall and they went through all kinds of watches. All of them were expensive and they were broke junior high students. But then, Momo called Takeru to help them think of what Jun would like and Takeru mentioned that Jun liked Spiderman. In reality, Jun was just getting into Spiderman. Momo knew of Kazuha's love of Marvel so she forced Takeru to hang out with Jun that day and make him bingewatch a bunch of Marvel movies. Jun wouldn't call Spiderman his favorite superhero. In fact, he didn't even like superheros.
After being told that Jun liked Spiderman (it was actually a lie), Kazuha noticed the Spiderman wristwatch in the children's section and bought it. After the watch was bought, Takeru began to brainwash Jun into thinking that he liked Spiderman a lot. Momo planned Kazuha and Jun's meetup and during the meetup, Kazuha presented the watch to Jun. And Jun, who had fallen victim to Takeru's brainwashing, happily took the watch.
Now, Jun was looking down at the watch as he tried to contain his tears.
Damn. After all of that hard work, Momo lamented.
"Let's go," Akari said, leaving their hiding spot.
"Suka...it happened again...!" Momo heard Jun say as Momo followed Akari.
Momo stopped walking and faced Jun. Who's Suka?
"She still broke up with me..." Jun said to the watch. "I need to go back. I need Kazuha to stay with me!"
Suddenly, the watch began to glow a jade green color.
"Oh shit. Oh shit!" Momo gasped. "Akari! Are you seeing this!?"
Akari, who was waiting for Momo down the hall, quickly ran back to her side and immediately thought back to the mirror Kumiko had before she transformed into a Bugaboo. "We have to grab that watch!"
Momo and Akari sprinted over to Jun with their hands stretched out to rip the watch out of his hands. Their fingers were only nanometers away when the jade-colored light shone in their eyes.
"Ahhhhhhh!" She threw her phone across the room and it hit the wall, creating a dent.
Random Fact: The music video for Enhyphen's Brought The Heat Back may or may not have inspired this chapter...
Wassup!? It's ya gurl sugarsugarrush! We are in a new arc! Woooo! But I guess technically chapter 6 (last chapter) was the start of the new arch now that I'm thinking about it. Oh well. Anyways, I hope y'all enjoyed this chapter! Please leave your thoughts and opinions in a PM or review!
