Chapter 2: They Met Too
Derek Venturi stepped through the door of his family's home in London, Ontario, dropping his duffel bag onto the floor with a loud thud. His younger brother Edwin immediately appeared, grinning from ear to ear.
"Derek!" Edwin exclaimed, bounding forward. "You're back! Did you bring me anything?"
"Yeah, Ed," Derek replied with a smirk. "A life lesson: don't ever let Dad try to pack for you. He almost sent me off with mismatched socks and a hockey stick I haven't used since peewee."
Marti, Derek's precocious younger sister, ran up and hugged him tightly around the waist. "I missed you, Smerek!"
"I missed you too, Smarti," Derek said, ruffling her hair affectionately.
Their father, George, emerged from the kitchen, drying his hands on a towel. "There's my boy! How was Toronto?"
"It was… fine," Derek said with a shrug, carefully masking his memories of Casey. "Parties, hockey… the usual."
"Well," George began, his tone suddenly more serious, "I'm glad you're home because I've got some news. I've met someone."
Derek raised an eyebrow. "Another one of your famous dates? What was her name—Sandra? Linda? Or was it the lady who wouldn't stop talking about her cats?"
George rolled his eyes. "No, Derek, this is different. Her name is Nora. She's from Toronto, and she might just be… the one."
Derek groaned internally. His dad's track record with women wasn't exactly stellar. "Sure, Dad. I'll believe it when I see it."
Meanwhile, in Toronto, Casey McDonald sat on her bed, twirling her hair as she recounted her summer to her younger sister, Lizzie.
"So, you're saying you met this amazing guy?" Lizzie asked, her eyes wide. "But you won't tell me his name?"
"It's not about his name," Casey said, her cheeks flushing slightly. "It's about the connection we had. It was… incredible."
"Sounds like someone's in love," Lizzie teased.
"I don't know," Casey admitted. "But it felt… special. Like fate brought us together."
Before Lizzie could press further, their mom, Nora, knocked on the doorframe and stepped inside. "Girls, I've got some news!"
"What is it?" Casey asked, sitting up straighter.
"I met someone," Nora said, a dreamy smile on her face. "His name is George, and I really think he might be the one."
Casey's face lit up. "Mom, that's amazing! I'm so happy for you."
Lizzie looked less convinced. "Does this mean he's going to be around all the time now?"
"Let's not get ahead of ourselves," Nora replied, laughing. "We're still getting to know each other. But I have a good feeling about this."
Casey hugged her mom, her hopeless romantic heart fully believing in her mother's happiness. Yet, as she lay in bed that night, her thoughts drifted back to Derek—the boy she'd promised herself she'd see again.
Unbeknownst to both Casey and Derek, their worlds were already on a collision course, bound by a twist of fate neither could have anticipated.
