Chapter 3: Worlds Collide
A warm breeze swept through the streets of London, Ontario, as Nora McDonald navigated her car into the driveway of the Venturi home. Casey sat in the passenger seat, nervously fiddling with her hair, while Lizzie, ever the skeptic, lounged in the backseat with her arms crossed.
"This is exciting, isn't it?" Nora said, her voice chipper. "You girls finally get to meet George and his kids. I think you'll all get along great."
Casey forced a smile. "Yeah… great."
In truth, her mind was elsewhere. Since returning from her summer romance, she'd often wondered about Derek, the boy who'd swept her off her feet. She'd convinced herself that leaving things to fate was the right choice. But as she stared at the unfamiliar house, she had no idea how fate was about to surprise her.
Nora stepped out of the car, motioning for her daughters to follow. They approached the front door, and Nora rang the bell with a confident smile.
Inside, Derek was sprawled on the couch, flipping through a hockey magazine. When he heard the doorbell, his dad's voice called from the kitchen. "Derek! Can you get that?"
Reluctantly, Derek sauntered over to the door, expecting some neighborhood kid selling fundraiser chocolates. But when he opened it, the last person he expected to see was standing at their front door.
Casey McDonald.
Both teenagers froze, their eyes locking in mutual shock. Time seemed to stand still as memories of their summer together came flooding back. Casey's heart raced, and Derek's usual cool demeanor vanished as his jaw slackened.
"Derek, who is it?" George asked, appearing behind his son. He broke the spell as Derek quickly stepped aside, his expression shifting to one of forced indifference.
"Uh… come on in," Derek muttered, avoiding Casey's gaze as he stepped back.
Nora beamed as she ushered her daughters inside. "George, these are my girls, Casey and Lizzie."
George nodded warmly. "Nice to meet you both. And these are my kids—Derek, Edwin, and Marti."
Casey's stomach twisted in knots as Derek gave a casual wave, pretending to meet her for the first time. "Hey. I'm Derek," he said, his tone betraying nothing of the emotions bubbling beneath the surface.
"Hi," Casey replied softly, her voice almost a whisper.
Lizzie glanced between them, oblivious to the tension but suspicious as always. "Cool place," she said, breaking the silence.
"Thanks," Edwin said, stepping forward with a goofy grin. "If you need a tour guide, I'm your guy."
Marti popped out from behind Derek, her small face lighting up. "Are you my new sisters?"
"Marti," George chided gently, though he couldn't help but chuckle. "We're just introducing everyone right now."
As introductions wrapped up, Derek and Casey continued to avoid eye contact, both struggling to act normal. Casey's mind raced with questions: What was Derek doing here? How could he possibly be George's son? And what would happen now?
For his part, Derek was grappling with the absurdity of the situation. Of all the people my dad could date, it had to be her mom?
Nora and George led the group into the living room, chatting away as if nothing were amiss. Meanwhile, Casey and Derek found themselves on opposite sides of the room, each pretending to listen while sneaking occasional glances at one another.
As the evening unfolded, they maintained the charade, but both knew their worlds had just been turned upside down. The summer they thought they'd left behind had followed them home, and the stakes were about to get much higher.
