Onyx slowly opened his eyes, squinting them as the sun was beating down on him. He slowly sat up pulling his blanket down and started to get up as he suddenly froze.
'Wait, I didn't bring a blanket with me last night' He thought as he wondered why he now had a blanket.
He looked to his left and saw that there was a pillow as well. He looked back to the blanket and looked for a tag for any indication for the owner. As he turned the blanket over, he noticed a familiar name.
"Pyrrha Nikos" He said to himself as his mind started racing. 'Why do I have her blanket? Did I steal it from her while I was asleep? No that couldn't be right, no way she wouldn't notice, but why do I have it then?' He thought as he finally came to a conclusion. 'She must have put it on me while I was sleeping, but how did she even know I was out here, did she follow me, I thought I didn't wake anybody?' He questioned himself.
Onyx sighed as he gave up on the thought and folded the blanket neatly. As he was about to grab the pillow he caught a sweet scent from the blanket.
"Lavender?" He questioned.
Onyx loved the smell of lavender. He started to remember when his mom used to force him into the bath and was always fussy till his mom mixed lavender scents to calm him down. The way he would always splash around until he smelled lavender and just calmed down like nothing had happened. He smiled at the memory with his mom.
As soon as Onyx opened his eyes from the memory he noticed he was still smelling Pyrrha's blanket. Onyx grew a mild pink tint on his cheeks as he quickly grabbed the pillow and made his way back towards the ballroom.
After about 5 minutes of walking he entered the ballroom and looked around for Pyrrha, but couldn't find her. He was walking back to his bag to see Ren and Nora must have gone to eat. He rolled up his sleeping bag and put it in his pack along with Pyrrhas blanket. He was about to leave when he bumped into Weiss.
"Hey Watch whe-" She stopped and looked at Onyx. "You…." She said with a little venom.
"Sorry, didn't mean to bump into you Weiss, I apologize" Onyx said with sincerity.
"Oh now you show manners, after what you said yesterday I don't believe you…" She retorted.
"Listen I think You and I got off on the wrong foot yesterday. I shouldn't have said what I did, but you were yelling at me for no real reason, not to mention insulting me. What would you have done?" Onyx responded.
"I would ha- Ughhh… You're right, I overreacted and was being rude. Let me apologize as well. If it were not for me being blown up and ruining my mood, maybe we could have met in a different light" Weiss said.
"Let's start over, I'm Onyx and you are?" I asked.
"Weiss Schnee, pleased to meet you" She said.
"Well Ms. Schnee, we still have an hour and a half till we need to report, would you care to accompany me to an exquisite breakfast?" Onyx asked with an over exaggerated bow.
Weiss let out a little giggle, "I will accept your offer, but please Weiss is just fine" She said.
"Of Course, Mlady" Onyx said while pretending to tip an invisible fedora.
Weiss let out a more prominent laugh as the two made their way to the cafeteria.
Onyx sat down across from Weiss. On his plate, scrambled eggs with a sausage patty and rice with a glass of milk. While Wiess had an omelet with fruit slices and a bowl of granola with Orange juice.
"So Onyx, what school did you go to before coming to Beacon?" Weiss broke the silence.
"Oh uhhh… I didn't?" Onyx responded.
Weiss had a confused look on her face, "What do you mean you didn't? How did you get into this academy then?"
Onyx thought for a second, remembering the events three months ago. He took a second before replying.
"Let's just say… certain events happened and Ozpin gave me a shot. Said he saw potential in me, so here I am. So why Beacon and not Atlas?" Onyx said, quickly trying to change the subject to her.
"Well I wanted to become a Huntress, something my Father thinks is a waste because I'm the heiress to the company. I wanted to decide for myself on what to do in life" She stated.
"So are you not going to become the leader of your company because you want to become a huntress?" Onyx asked.
"What? No, I didn't mean I'm leaving it. I want to change how the Schnee dust company is ran by my own means and not follow my Father like he thinks I should"
"Ahh I see, just want your own independence and use your own way to run things, I can respect that. You shouldn't let others control you or your life' Onyx said.
"Exactly, I want this to be on my own volition" Weiss said with a proud smile.
We continued to eat for a few more minutes before we heard an announcement go off.
"Attention all new student applicants, please change into your combat gear and meet at the designated starting point for your initiation in 20 minutes, that is all" The voice on the speaker said.
"Well let's get moving, don't want to be late and get disqualified" Onyx said.
Weiss gave him a nod and they both dumped their trays and made their way to the locker room.
Weiss and Onyx split off towards their lockers and Onyx started to change into his combat suit. He tired his last bootlace and noticed a familiar red haired girl to his left. He looked and saw Pyrrha was finishing putting a shield on her back. Onyx grabbed the blanket and pillow from his pack and walked over to her.
"Hey Pyrrha" Onyx greeted.
"Oh hey Onyx" Pyrrha responded.
"I just wanted to give these back to you, thank you" He said as he handed back her pillow and blanket.
Pyrrha smiled and took her items. She noticed they were neatly folded and set them in her locker. She then remembered back to the night before of what Onyx said. She turned around and in a surprise action hugged Onyx.
"Thank you for taking good care of them. If you ever need help, just let me know" Pyrrha said sincerely.
Onyx was frozen by the turn of events. He was surprised Pyrrha was hugging him and what for. Onyx slowly gave a hug back. While in the hug Onyx smelt a familiar scent.
"Huh, lavender" He accidentally said out loud.
"Wh-What..?" Pyrrha stammered out as she pulled back from the hug.
"Uhh.. I-I mean your blanket smelled like lavender, not that I was smelling your blanket or anything and just you smelled like it to, but I guess that makes sense since it is yours…" Onyx rambled out taking in Pyrrha's slightly embarrassed face with a tint of pink.
"Ohh not that lavender is a bad smell or that you smell bad, it is a good smell and you do smell good..yea you smell good…." Onyx said while nervously scratched his head.
"Uhh-uhh" Was all Pyrrha was able to get out at the moment.
"Welp best be getting to go, gotta go" Onyx said with an embarrassed tone as he formed what looked like a wind current and hopped into it and flew out of the room.
Pyrrha stood there for a few seconds before composing herself.
"Hehehe, he said I smelled nice, what a dork" She said to herself playfully as she grabbed her other weapon and headed for the cliff.
Onyx was standing on the edge of the cliff, looking at the massive forest. He could feel a slight breeze blow against him. He closed his eyes and wondered what test he would be up against. How many Grimm he would have to face and what type of Grimm. Would he have to fight other students or not. Who would end up being his partner. Many thoughts floated through his head as he stood there embracing the view. He turned around and stood on one platform out of the 24 there were.
He looked to his left and saw Ruby who gave him a smile and a wave. To his left was Pyrrha. Onyx looked at her but quickly turned away as she looked at him, still embarrassed from earlier. Onyx looked and saw 21 other students on the other platforms. They all sat in silence till Ozpin made his way to the front of all them.
"Students...or should I say applicants. You may have been accepted to try and make it into Beacon, but not you are not yet students. That's what this test is for. To see those who prove themselves that they belong here and those that are not ready" Ozpin said as he sipped from his mug. "There are 16 of you… and there are 8 relics in that forest. Since Beacon only has teams of 4, we will only be accepting 8 of you and that means the other 8...well better luck next year" He said with a small smile.
"So how do we make it then?" Nora asked.
"Well Ms. Valkyrie, you will have two objectives, one being able to find an artifact, the other I will not tell you, you should be able to figure it out if you wish to attend this school. You don't get an artifact, you fail your objective. Along with injuries, if you are injured to the capacity of not being able to fight, a third year student will then intervene and you will fail the test" he explains as some people stare in disbelief.
"You will encounter Grimm and possibly other students for the artifacts. Under no circumstance is killing authorized though. Remember you will not be alone as others will be testing with you, they might be beneficial to you passing. You will have 24 hours to make it back to this cliff top or you will fail. Your time starts right now, good luck" Ozpin finished as the springs activated on the launch pads and flung the students to the forest.
"Do you really think this new test of yours will be beneficial to them, they could possibly die" Question a blond teacher.
"Don't worry Glynda, I have all third year teams and one fourth year team ready to assist just in case. Give them a chance, this new Generation may surprise you" Ozpin said while sipping his mug.
Onyx was soaring through the air. Wind blowing against his body. Onyx spotted a tree he was approaching at high speeds and formed a wind axe. He slammed it into the tree and spiraled around and down the tree until he hit the bottom and sprung out and rolled till he slammed into a tree.
"Owww… didn't think that one through," Onyx said as he rubbed the small of his back.
Onyx got up and dusted himself off and pulled his scroll out to see the time. Once he opened it he noticed that the only things that were displayed were his aura level and picture, the time was fuzzy static and unreadable.
'Jamming our scrolls to test us on being able to keep track of time I see. Nice try Oz, I don't need digital time" Onyx thought as he chuckled. 'So finding an artifact is the objective along with something else...hmmmmm..' Onyx thought hard for about a minute, 'There has to be more than two objectives to this test, otherwise he wouldn't have mentioned failing if not meeting the time limit, that itself is a third objective. There is definitely more to this test. I'll think about it later" He declared as he cracked his back and made his way away from the cliff.
Onyx had been jogging for the last ten minutes when he came upon a cave. He looked at its entrance debating to go in. He ultimately gave in and made his way into the cave. Onyx brought out his scroll and went deeper into the darkness. He froze when he heard the sound of movement.
'Running water? A stream?' He questioned himself.
Onyx brought up his light to the cave wall and could see a glistening texture. He brought his hand and felt the wall. It was wet to the touch. Bringing his hand down the wall he found his hand ending up getting half way submerged. He shined his light and saw a small stream leading deeper in the cave. Following the stream lead to a hole Onyx had to crouch to squeeze through. Emerging on the other side of the hole, Onyx shined his light and froze. In front of him were about 12 Boarbatusk, all sleeping soundly in the clearing.
'Hehe, I'm in danger' Onyx thought with a nervous chuckle.
Onyx crouched back down and started to leave the way he came until he heard a high pitch squeal.
"Dammit" He mumbled to himself.
Onyx crammed through the space and started to sprint with his light leading the way. Hearing the squealing of the pack of Boarbatusk behind him and kicking it into overdrive as he didn't want to face that many alone. As Onyx was running he could hear the Grimm getting closer. Onyx took a hard left turn and felt his ankle get tripped by one of the tusks. He fell and rolled to catch himself. Shining his light he could see the 12 Boarbatusk in front of him backing him into a wall. He could see the exit.
With quick thinking Onyx switched his light mode to strobe and blinded all the Grimm. Onyx leaped over the Grimm and threw a massed ball of wind at the top of the cave entrance. The wind cracked the already loose rocks. Onyx ran and as he jumped for the exit, he formed a wind hammer and swung it hitting the ceiling causing the entrance to fully collapse, trapping the Grimm.
Onyx put his hands over his head catching his breath. He wiped the sweat off his forehead and took a minute to collect himself. He was catching his breath when an explosion occurred to his left about two hundred yards away. Onyx snapped his head to the sound and took off towards the noise.
As Onyx reached the area he hopped to the tallest tree to get a better look. He saw what looked like Pyrrha surrounded by seven Beowolfs. Onyx leaped from his perch and landed back to back with Pyrrha.
"Onyx? What are you doing here?" Pyrrha asked, surprised.
"I was in the neighborhood, thought I might stop by," Onyx said playfully sarcastically.
"Well I wouldn't mind the help, got a plan?" She asked.
"Something like that, ready?" He said.
"You know it" She replied with a focused smile.
Onyx quickly formed a current and ended up behind the Beowolf directly in front of him and reformed the current back to Pyrrha. He kicked the Grimm into the current sending it towards Pyrrha who smirked and lunged her javelin into the chest of the Beowolf killing it. Onyx ducked backward to dodge an incoming swipe from another Beowolf. Onyx still bent backward, stared into the Beowolf's eyes as it prepared to strike again, but was stopped by a shot from Pyrrhas javelin that had turned into a rifle. The Grimm recoiled back and fell on the ground. Onyx capitalized and stood back up and stabbed the Grimm with a wind sword.
Two of the Beowolfs charged at Pyrrha swiping their claws which she blocked with ease. Pyrrha backed flipped and landed as one Beowolf lunged its claw down towards her which she sidestepped and drove her Javelin through the hand pinning it to the ground. She jumped on its back and put the Grimm into a single armbar and ducked her head and arched its back and the head of the Grimm was sliced off by Onyx. As the Grimm turned to dust, Pyrrha saw Onyx smile and give her a nod before he was hit by the other Beowolf.
"Onyx!" She yelled as he slammed into the tree with three Beowolfs starting to surround him.
Pyrrha threw her Javelin into the tree right above Onyx. Onyx quickly recovered and used the javelin to swing himself on top of it as one of the Beowolfs went for an attack. Onyx kicked the Grimm across its face and sent it stumbling back. He jumped away from the tree.
"Pyrrha!" He yelled while signaling her to throw her shield at him.
With a confused look she did. The shield went flying towards Onyx who formed a wind hammer and slammed it into the shield like a baseball bat. The shield went flying and cut through two Beowolfs neck, decapitating them and dazing the third. Pyrrha sprinted to dazed Beowolf and kicked it into her javelin that was still lodged into the tree. The javelin plunged through the back of the Beowolf, splitting its spine in two. The Grimm turned to dust as Onyx grabbed Pyrrhas shield and formed a current to the last Beowolf, which was the Alpha. As Onyx was traveling in his current, his eyes started to pulsate.
"AHHHH!" He yelled as his current suddenly dispersed and Onyx was sent rolling on the ground.
Onyx finally stopped rolling after twenty feet. He slowly made it to his knees. He hesitantly propped himself up with his hands covering his eyes, the pulsating slowing down. Pyrrha was off to the side, looking in worry when her eyes widened.
"Onyx watch out!" She said as Onyx uncovered his eyes just in time for the Alpha to slash him across his chest sending him tumbling into the woods.
Pyrrhas stood in shock for a second before taking off after him. She blew through the brush in the way and eventually spotted him slowly trying to get up.
"Onyx are you okay?" She said with panic.
"Ye-yea I'm fine" He said in between breaths.
Pyrrha got a good look at him, "Onyx you have 3 deep gashes in your chest and your bleeding, you are far from fine!" Pyrrha declared with worry, "How come your aura did not protect you?" She questioned as she looked at his aura, which surprisingly was still at 80%.
"I don't know, it felt as if my aura fluctuated and the Alpha got a lucky shot when it was low. I have never had this happen" He explained.
"Well we should get you to Oz-" He cut her off.
"No, I'm not quitting, Pyrrha I will be fine, lets just deal with this Alpha first okay?" He exclaimed.
Pyrrha looked at Onyx who had pleading eyes. A part of her wanted for him to just stop, but the other remembered what he said last night. After about a minute of thinking, Pyrrha ultimately decided to not contact Ozpin.
"Okay, Alpha first, then we need to seriously patch that wound" Pyrrha said.
Onyx gave her a small sincere smile and got up to his feet. Feeling the pain in his chest, he knew he had to make this quick. He quickly formed a plan and told it to Pyrrha. The two emerged from the trees to see the Alpha still waiting.
Onyx formed a current and started to circle around the Alpha. Dust started to pick up and soon the Alpha couldn't see a few feet in front of him. Onyx launched out of his current towards Pyrrha as she jumped and balled up behind her shield. Onyx formed a wind hammer and hit her shield sending her high into the air. Onyx quickly formed another current leading above Pyrrha in the air. Pyrrha balled up again and Onyx jumped out and used his momentum and smashed his wind hammer down on her shield sending her flying towards the ground. Pyrrha pulled out her javelin and aimed for the Alpha. Using her speed and velocity, landing the tip of her spear on the skull of the alpha, piercing it. The Alpha fell back and turned to dust.
Onyx smiled seeing the Alpha being killed. His vision started to get blurry as he fell to the ground. Being tired with the loss of blood, he wasn't able to brace for a landing and slammed onto the ground.
"Onyx! Onyx! Onx-" Was all he heard as he faded from consciousness.
