CHAPTER 21
The rescue team returned to Konoha under the heavy weight of their mission's outcome. The air was thick with unease as they approached the Hokage Tower. Naruto, Neji, Kiba and Sakura led the group, their expressions somber. Even Kakashi, who usually maintained a composed demeanor, seemed subdued. The team moved through the streets in silence, the villagers' curious gazes burning into them as they passed.
When they reached Tsunade's office, Shizune ushered them in immediately. Tsunade stood behind her desk, her arms crossed, her sharp eyes scanning the group.
"Report," she ordered, her voice firm.
Neji stepped forward, bowing respectfully. "Hokage-sama, we located Sasuke and Hinata-sama. However, Hinata-sama refused to return with us. She claimed it was her choice to remain with him."
Tsunade's eyes narrowed, and her jaw tightened. "Refused? Did she seem coerced? Was she under duress?"
Neji shook his head, though hesitation lingered in his posture. "No, Hokage-sama. Her demeanor was calm and resolute. She stated in a letter that she'd made her decision willingly."
Naruto's fists clenched at his sides. "She didn't have a choice! There's no way Hinata would willingly stay with that bastard! He must've threatened her—manipulated her!"
Tsunade turned her sharp gaze to Naruto. "Enough! You're letting your emotions cloud your judgment. Let's hear the rest of the report."
Sakura stepped forward, her voice quieter but steady. "Naruto's frustration isn't entirely misplaced. It's hard to believe Hinata would choose to stay, but… it didn't seem like Sasuke was forcing her. She looked at peace. Almost like she wanted to be there."
Naruto's eyes widened. "How can you say that, Sakura? Sasuke's a rogue ninja! He's dangerous—you know that better than anyone!"
Sakura's gaze softened but didn't waver. "I know, Naruto. But what I saw was different from the Sasuke I remember. He wasn't just angry or vengeful. He… he seemed like he's searching for something. And maybe Hinata's a part of that."
Naruto's hands trembled, but he said nothing more. Tsunade exhaled deeply, rubbing her temples.
"Neji, you're dismissed," she said. "Go inform the Hyuga clan of what's happened. I'll decide on our next course of action soon."
Neji bowed again. "Yes, Hokage-sama."
Neji's arrival at the Hyuga compound was met with immediate attention. Guards opened the gates without question, and word of his return spread quickly. Within minutes, Hiashi and Hanabi were waiting for him in the main hall. Hiashi sat cross-legged on a raised platform, his expression calm but severe. Hanabi stood beside him, her arms crossed, her eyes sharp with curiosity and concern.
"Neji," Hiashi began, his voice steady. "Report. What happened to Hinata?"
Neji bowed deeply. "Hiashi-sama, I regret to inform you that Hinata-sama has chosen to remain with Sasuke Uchiha."
Hanabi's eyes widened. "What? That's impossible! Onee-san would never stay with someone like that!"
Neji's gaze flicked to Hanabi briefly before returning to Hiashi. "I understand your disbelief, Hanabi-sama. I, too, was reluctant to accept it. But she made her decision clear."
Hiashi's expression darkened, though he remained composed. "Was she coerced? Did Sasuke threaten her?"
"No," Neji said firmly. "She stated her intentions without hesitation. She claimed it was her choice to remain and… seemed at peace with it."
Hanabi took a step forward, her voice rising. "She's lying! Or… or Sasuke's manipulating her somehow. We need to bring her back!"
Hiashi raised a hand, silencing her. He studied Neji carefully, his sharp eyes searching for any sign of uncertainty.
"You believe her?" Hiashi asked, his voice low but probing.
Neji hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "Yes, Hiashi-sama. I do."
Hiashi's eyes narrowed, his expression unreadable. For a long moment, he said nothing, his mind clearly racing. Finally, he stood, his robes flowing around him like a shroud.
"That will be all, Neji," Hiashi said, his tone measured. "You've done your duty. Leave me to contemplate this further."
Neji bowed deeply. "Yes, Hiashi-sama."
Hanabi looked as though she wanted to argue, but she bit her lip and remained silent as Neji left the room. Once they were alone, she turned to her father, her voice trembling with frustration.
"Father, we can't just… accept this! We have to do something!"
Hiashi's gaze remained distant, his thoughts clearly elsewhere. "Hinata has always been more perceptive than most. If she believes this path is hers to walk, I will not interfere—yet."
Hanabi's eyes widened in disbelief. "You can't mean that! She's your daughter!"
Hiashi's gaze shifted to her, his expression softening slightly. "I do not mean to abandon her. But neither will I act rashly. For now, we wait."
A few days later, Naruto and Sakura sat together at Ichiraku Ramen. The usually lively stall was quiet, the weight of their recent mission hanging heavily between them. Naruto stared into his bowl, his chopsticks barely moving. Sakura watched him, concern etched into her features.
"Naruto," she began gently, "you've barely eaten. That's not like you."
Naruto sighed, pushing the bowl away. "I just can't stop thinking about it. About Hinata. About Sasuke. None of it makes sense."
Sakura set her chopsticks down, folding her hands on the counter. "I know it's hard to understand. But maybe… maybe Hinata sees something in Sasuke that we don't."
Naruto's eyes snapped to hers, a mixture of frustration and disbelief in his gaze. "What could she possibly see in him? He's dangerous! He's hurt so many people!"
Sakura's expression softened. "I don't know, Naruto. But Hinata's always been kind. She sees the good in people, even when no one else does. Maybe she thinks she can help him find peace."
Naruto frowned, his hands balling into fists. "And what if he just hurts her, Sakura? What if she's wrong?"
Sakura reached out, placing a hand on his arm. "We have to trust her. Maybe… maybe Hinata's exactly what Sasuke needs. And maybe… maybe she needs him, too."
Naruto's shoulders slumped, his voice barely above a whisper. "I don't know what to think anymore. I just… I wanted to bring him back. To make things right. But now… it feels impossible."
Sakura squeezed his arm gently. "You've always believed in him, Naruto. That hasn't changed. But sometimes, believing means letting go."
Naruto didn't respond, his gaze distant as he stared at the counter. Despite Sakura's words, a fire still burned in his chest—a determination to uncover the truth.
The next morning, Naruto stood outside Tsunade's office, his heart pounding in his chest. He'd spent the entire night wrestling with his thoughts, and now he was ready to act. Taking a deep breath, he knocked firmly on the door.
"Come in," Tsunade's voice called.
Naruto entered, his expression serious. Tsunade looked up from her paperwork, raising an eyebrow at his determined stance.
"Naruto," she said, setting her pen down. "What is it?"
He bowed slightly, his voice steady. "Baachan, I'm requesting permission to take on a solo mission."
Tsunade frowned, leaning back in her chair. "A solo mission? What kind of mission?"
Naruto straightened, meeting her gaze with unwavering determination. "I want to find out the truth about Sasuke and Hinata. I need to understand why she stayed… and what Sasuke's really after."
Tsunade studied him carefully, her sharp eyes searching for any hint of hesitation. "And what do you plan to do if you find them?"
Naruto's fists clenched at his sides. "I just want answers. I won't try to bring them back if they don't want to come. But I need to know what's really going on."
Tsunade sighed, rubbing her temples. "Naruto, this isn't just about you. If you go after them, it could escalate things. Are you prepared for that?"
"I am," Naruto said firmly. "I won't do anything reckless, I promise. But I can't just sit here and do nothing."
Tsunade held his gaze for a long moment before finally nodding. "Fine. I'll approve your request. But you'll check in regularly, and if anything goes wrong, you'll report back immediately. Understood?"
Naruto's face lit up with determination. "Understood, Baachan. Thank you."
As he turned to leave, Tsunade's voice stopped him. "Naruto."
He paused, looking back at her.
"Be careful," she said, her voice softer. "And don't lose sight of what's important."
Naruto nodded, a small smile breaking through his seriousness. "I won't."
As he stepped out into the morning sun, a renewed sense of purpose filled him. He didn't know what he would find, but he was ready to face whatever lay ahead. For Sasuke, for Hinata, and for the truth.
