"Okay," Xander worked to stay calm. "I'll go call an ambulance -."
"Why?" Faith asked as Diana helped her to the bathroom to get cleaned up.
"So they can take you to the hospital and they can deliver the baby." Xander explained.
"But I can't go to the hospital." Faith answered.
"Why can't you go to the hospital?" Xander asked, confused. "That's where you go to have a baby."
"The doctor said I can't come back."
Xander frowned. "No, he didn't, did he? Why would a doctor tell you that you can't go to the hospital?"
"He didn't say you couldn't go to the hospital, Faith." Diana tried to explain. "He joked that he didn't want to see you in the hospital, meaning he hoped there wasn't another scary incident."
"That's not what he said." Faith insisted. "He said I can't go to the hospital, I heard him!"
"You misunderstood him." Diana gently corrected her. "He can't stop you from going to the hospital anyway."
"But it's too soon." Faith resisted the idea of the hospital. "Which means we can't go to the hospital because it's not time for her to come yet. She's not due for ten more days, which means I'm not even in labor and I can't go to the hospital if I'm not in labor. There's no need."
"Your water broke, Faith." Diana reminded her as she cleaned her up. "That's a definite sign of labor."
"Maybe I just peed my pants." Faith looked embarrassed. "Yeah, that's what I did. Gabrielle's been sitting on my bladder and making me go to the bathroom every five minutes anyway. I just didn't make it this time, that's all. I'm definitely not in labor!" She insisted.
"You had a contraction, Faith." Diana said patiently, helping her into a loose t-shirt and pants.
"One! One contraction! And it was probably just a cramp, what do I know what a contraction feels like? I've never been in labor before! And I'm not in labor now because it's too early. Gabrielle needs ten more days, I need ten more days. I can't be in labor!"
"I think you've been in labor for awhile, Faith." Diana told her.
"Wouldn't the doctor have noticed?"
"He didn't do a physical exam, he just attached a fetal monitor. It's used to measure a baby's heart rate and contractions, but it might not have registered any contractions because they were irregular and faint. The intensity increased with your water breaking. Xander's right, we need to go to the hospital and you need to be examined."
"Not by that idiot doctor, I don't!" Faith exclaimed. "He obviously doesn't know what he's doing if he missed the fact that I'm in labor! Which I absolutely am not!" Faith nodded decisively. She followed Diana out of the bathroom. "I haven't had another contraction, so I'm right, it was just a cramp." She told Xander, who looked lost.
"Uh, shouldn't we make sure of that?" He asked, looking back and forth between the two and having no idea what to do. "Because the alternative is delivering her here and I don't know about you, that's the most terrifying idea I've ever heard! Doctors deliver babies, not kids!"
"Diana's a doctor, she can deliver the baby." Faith said reasonably.
"Wrong kind of doctor, dear." Diana looked amused. "I have a doctorate and I teach and it has nothing to do with babies, I assure you." She moved passed the squabbling, scared teenagers and picked up the phone. Neither noticed as they continued to debate whether Faith was in labor or not.
"There's other signs of labor, right?" Xander asked. "Do you have any of them?"
Faith rubbed her lower back. "I don't know! Okay, I don't know, but I do know I'm not in labor because it's too damn early! Gabrielle's not due for ten days! Ten days, which means she's not done being made, so I can't be in labor because Gabrielle needs time."
"Any time after nine months and she's pretty much ready to go." Diana gently steered Faith toward the front door and held Xander's elbow. "I called Mason, he'll call everybody else and they'll meet us at the hospital. The ambulance won't take long to get here. Maybe you're right, Faith -."
"Ha! Told ya!" She crowed.
"Or maybe I'm right and you are in labor, it's better to be sure. But personally the fact that you keep rubbing your back tells me you're having contractions and they're more in your back and you just thought it was back pain. Which means you've likely been in labor for awhile and didn't notice. It's been a very stressful day and you were attacked today, it's easy to think you were just feeling the effects of dodging a crazy Magic using bitch."
Faith moaned as another contraction, no cramp! tightened over her belly. "I hate you, Xander!"
"Me? What did I do?!" The confused teenager asked.
"Marathon night of great sex, asshole! That's what you did!" Faith was helped into the ambulance. "Get your ass in here! If I have to go through this, so do you!"
Xander scrambled into the ambulance and held her hand. And tried not to scream as Faith's grip tightened as another contraction rippled through her belly.
Diana climbed into the front seat of the ambulance next to the driver just in time to hear Xander whimper and Faith yell, "She's coming!"
"Get us there in one piece, but get us there now!" She ordered the paramedic who nodded sharply and hit the lights and sirens.
