They called Mason, who after arriving and checking the unconscious Diana called an ambulance.
"It sounds like another of those sympathetic resonance things like what happened with the bleachers." Mason commented after the teens had explained the attack and their efforts at defense. "Diana needs to be checked at the hospital. We'll tell them it felt like an earthquake, windows have exploded during earthquakes and Diana's injuries can be explained as the shaking knocking her into a wall. Magic doesn't need to be mentioned at all. They can transport the body to the morgue."
"But what caused the sympathetic resonance thingie in the first place?" Faith asked.
"The same five people were present both times." Mason pointed out gently. "You four and the baby, one or more or all of you together most likely caused it somehow."
"I wasn't in the gym the first time." Cordelia pointed out. "I was in the locker room and had no idea anything was happening and by the time I was in the gym, the bleachers made one last groan and stopped. I don't think I had anything to do with it."
"She's probably right." Xander agreed. "I was feeling what I felt before, fear and anger. Fear for Faith and the baby and angry that someone wanted to hurt them. Maybe I did it, somehow."
"I was feeling those things too." Jesse admitted. "Maybe I amped it up or something, just because I don't have a seed of Magic in me doesn't mean I couldn't have done something without knowing it. I've learned quite a bit about Magic in general since we met Diana and Faith and been exposed to a lot of it and anyone can do Magic to varying degrees according to Diana."
"But that bitch wanted to kill the baby." Faith said quietly. "And the vampire that tried to mess with us in the gym was aware I was pregnant. Amy or Catherine, whoever that is, said the baby was a danger to her and had to die. And I was feeling pretty afraid and angry too and she may have picked up on that. What if Gabrielle did it?"
"She wouldn't understand killing someone to protect herself or others." Mason stated. "All she is emotions right now, but she does have her own seed of Magic and if she felt your fear and just reacted, whatever her power is, that could have caused the sympathetic resonance. She wasn't trying to hurt anyone, she was just afraid. If and I emphasize if, she has this power, she didn't deliberately use it to kill. There would be no intent, it would be like she cried and the vibrations were strong enough to make something rattle. She's just a scared baby who's found out far sooner then she should ever have to that the world isn't always a nice place."
"Whoever this Catherine is or was," Xander added. "she bodyjacked Amy, we need to find Amy and make sure she's alright. I have no idea who this Catherine is or what she looks like -."
"Amy's mother!" Cordelia exclaimed. "Her mother was known as Catherine the Great. She was the best cheerleader Sunnydale ever had, she won trophies! Amy joined the team to bond with her mother, what if it wasn't Amy but her mother?! All this time, Catherine was using her daughter's body just so she could be a cheerleader again. That sounds so insane, but the person who attacked us was clearly insane."
"My psychic sense never went off around her." Xander frowned. "Did she know I'm psychic and block me? Or did I just want to see Willow's old friend and ignore any vibes I might have gotten?"
"Probably more like wishful thinking," Mason decided. "than her being aware of your abilities. You miss Willow and she was a connection to Willow. Easy to overlook any warning signs when your own emotions are involved. I'll have the team check Amy's house, see if she's there. In the meantime, the ambulance should be here any minute. Faith, you go with Diana to the hospital, get checked out. You're very close to delivery, less then two weeks and were and still are, very stressed, it could push you into early delivery."
Another scary thought for everyone to deal with. "Stay calm." Mason advised. "Gabrielle does not need you guys panicking, she's far enough along that early delivery would not be much of an issue. Not to mention, you, Faith, have done everything you can to make sure she's healthy, this is just a precaution, like when Tony Harris crashed into the Expresso Pump. You did the sensible thing and got checked out then and everything was just fine. I'm sure it is now too, we just need to be sure. The rest of us will meet you at the hospital. Stay calm, that's the most important thing right now, especially if Gabrielle does have this power, she's reacting to you most especially, Faith. For her sake, you have to hold it together."
A knock on the door signaled the arrival of the ambulance and Mason explained the situation without mentioning Magic. Earthquakes, both minor and bigger had happened in Sunnydale before, including earlier that same year, the paramedics saw no reason to question it. The unconscious Diana, along with Faith, were loaded into the ambulance and the morgue was notified to pick up Amy's body. Mason excused himself and went and called his team, who, after finding out Amy's address went to the house to try to find her. She was found alive and terrified, hiding in the basement and still trapped in her mother's body.
She broke down crying when she was told her mother was dead. She was both free and yet still trapped.
