Grisha found himself in the mysterious realm of the Paths, completely bewildered by his presence here. Turning around, he spotted his son, Eren, but not the boy he remembered—this was Future Eren. Standing there with an emotionless glare, Eren seemed to look right through him, intensifying Grisha's confusion. He couldn't grasp the reason for his arrival here, and each moment of silence felt like an eternity. Then Eren finally spoke.
"The Attack Titan, the Founder, they must be transferred to me. As soon as possible."
Grisha didn't know how to reply at first until he found his own question. "So soon? Why now?"
Eren held out his hand as a familiar red symbol appeared, glowing with intensity. Grisha had been shown this before by Eren within the Paths. "Because of this. This symbol has suddenly appeared throughout the Paths consistently. Ymir fears this symbol for some reason. As to why, I do not know."
"Could this have something to do with this Titan Slayer?" Grisha asked in bewilderment.
"Yes. I don't know what this person's intentions are, but the fact remains that if Ymir perceives this symbol alone as a threat, then we need to make sure I receive the Attack and the Founder. Quickly."
"But Eren, you can't be ser—"
Grisha's sense of clarity jolted him back to reality as he sat up with a sudden start. A sharp intake of breath filled his lungs, and he realized he was drenched in sweat. He found himself in bed, the dim light barely illuminating the room around him. His heart raced as he instinctively scanned his surroundings, desperately seeking a hint of familiarity in the shadows. It was then that his gaze landed on his wife, peacefully asleep beside him, providing a comforting anchor in the midst of his disorientation.
Grisha let out a sigh of relief as he gently swung his legs over the side of the bed and stood up. He moved quietly, making his way down the familiar staircase before finally stepping into the kitchen. Once there, he settled into a chair at the table, surrounded by the early morning light filtering through the window.
His mind was racing, filled with questions that demanded answers, yet deep down he understood that he might never receive the clarity he sought. It was puzzling for him to consider: if the individual known as the Titan Slayer played a vital role in the unfolding events ahead, why exactly was Eren now in need of both the Attack and Founding Titans? These thoughts swirled through his head like leaves caught in a breeze, but ultimately, Grisha concluded that such concerns might not truly matter in the grand scheme of things.
Ever since the Owl had revealed the harsh truths to him, Grisha had chosen to tuck away his own inquiries and uncertainties. It was a decision born from the weight of knowledge he had been given, and it had influenced his outlook from that point forward. Acceptance seemed to be the best course of action; perhaps he would find peace in surrendering to the flow of fate.
As the first light of day began to illuminate the sky, Commander Erwin and Captain Levi found themselves by the courtyard of the Survey Corps headquarters. They meticulously reviewed the final details of the upcoming expedition, ensuring that everything was perfectly arranged to suit Erwin's strategic vision. With precision and care, they took stock of the situation, knowing that this mission was vital for the future.
The Scouts were all gathered, diligently preparing their gear and saddling their horses, each individual focused on the task at hand. They moved with purpose, checking their carriages and supplies to guarantee that every essential item was in place and that nothing had been overlooked. The atmosphere was charged with a palpable sense of anticipation among the ranks. Each scout wore a resolute expression, fueled by confidence in the success of the expedition ahead.
They held unwavering faith in their Commander and harbored the optimistic belief that this mission could lead them to the notorious Titan Slayer, a figure who had become the stuff of legends. This hope inspired a fierce commitment within each of them, reinforcing their resolve, united in their mission.
"I can't stress enough to you, Erwin, that this whole expedition's foundation is nothing more than a leap of faith." Levi pointed out in his usual cold demeanor.
"Is that not the case for all our expeditions, Levi?" Erwin rhetorically asked as he turned to look at his close comrade.
This made Levi sigh in annoyance as Erwin missed the point of the statement. "Yes, but I mean that this entire expedition hangs in the balance, solely based on the Titan Slayer's willingness to return with us. You're banking everything on that one decision. One wrong move, and this could be the end for the Scouts." Levi reiterated as he gazed at Erwin.
"Weighing what will happen and what won't happen is fruitless. The only thing to do is act." Erwin stoically refuted. Turning his back to Levi as he approached his horse to store the formation plans in one of the saddle's pouches.
Levi quietly nodded, signaling his agreement despite the unease he felt about the entire situation. He couldn't shake off his worries, but deep down, he recognized that Erwin had a remarkable ability to scrutinize and refine every element of his strategies when he made decisions. Levi's trust in Erwin was unwavering; he was convinced that if anyone could successfully bring the Titan Slayer into the Walls, it would undoubtedly be Erwin. With this thought in mind, Levi took a moment to think about his comrades. Before they set out on their mission, he resolved to check in on them, ensuring they were prepared and ready. He found Furlan and Isabel checking over their ODM equipment as he walked up to them. Catching their attention almost immediately as they stood up and faced him.
"You two ready?"
"Yep. Ready to go." Furlan casually replied.
"Always, Big Bro." Isabel answered with a wink and a smile.
"Good. We're leaving in ten minutes." Levi said with a nod.
"That briefing last night was brutally long. Thought we'd have to eat during the whole damn thing." Isabel stated in a tired tone.
"Yeah, but it's all worth it. Erwin wants everyone in the loop on this whole operation. Everything from formations, possible scenarios, what he expects the number of Titans we can encounter might be, and most importantly... what to do when someone comes across the Titan Slayer." Furlan expressed himself calmly to Isabel.
"That's if we can locate him." Levi emphasized with a furrowed brow.
"Optimistic as always." Isabel joked with a sneer.
"Levi, relax. Erwin knows what he's doing." Furlan stated as he placed a hand on Levi's shoulder.
"There's no doubt there, Furlan. The doubts lie with this... Titan Slayer. I've never seen Erwin so quick to put his faith in a complete stranger that has capabilities beyond any of our understanding."
"Sounds familiar." Furlan jested with a smile.
"That was entirely different." Levi stressed as he narrowed his eyes to the ground. "The Titan Slayer is a complete unknown. We were just thugs for hire. The fact that Erwin is already putting his trust in this person, so much blind faith, when he's never even seen this guy yet, means he sees something we can't. As to what? I have no damn clue. It's not like it really matters, anyway." Levi looked back up at Furlan to make his last point. "But I'll be keeping an eye on this guy. That's for sure."
"Soldiers! Make ready! Check your gear and mount up; we leave shortly!" Erwin shouted the order. Catching everyone's attention as they complied.
"Show time." Isabel commented with a chuckle.
"See you both in the formation." Levi said as he walked to his horse.
Eren went about his daily chores, his thoughts heavy with contemplation. His father had tasked him with cleaning the stables. At first, he protested, but eventually, he gave in and got to work. As he carried out his task, his mind wandered, reflecting on the events of the past few days. The path before him was clearer than ever: he was determined to join the Scouts. He would join them. He would face and destroy every Titan that crossed his path. He would fight to liberate humanity from the cursed confines of the Walls. Freedom wasn't just a dream—Eren was convinced it was within reach. Not just for himself, but for everyone. They would all be free. In his mind's eye, he envisioned the figure of the Titan Slayer—his hero embodying everything Eren aspired to achieve. This figure inspired him, driving him further toward his goal. Eren would stand alongside the Titan Slayer, fighting to bring humanity countless steps closer to safety and peace. Together, they would destroy the enemies of mankind once and for all.
"Once I'm old enough, I'll sign up for the Cadets. From there, the Scouts... soon."
"Eren, are you still in there?!" Armin called out.
"Yeah, first stall!" Eren answered.
Armin came into his view with a smile. A gleaming look in his eyes. Eren knew what this meant; Armin had news. Good news, in fact, and would be more than delighted to fill Eren in.
"Your dad came back from the market just now, and he said that in the market square there's news that the Scouts are going out on an expedition today!" Armin cheered with an open smile.
Eren stopped what he was doing as he looked at his friend in disbelief. "What?"
"Yeah! They're going out on another expedition to find the Titan Slayer!" Armin cheered again with glee.
"What, really?!" Eren raised his voice, quickly running up to Armin. "When do they leave?"
"Later this morning they'll be marching through the lower Trost District." Armin quickly explained.
"You think we'll be able to go see?"
"Your dad said we could after breakfast!"
"Yeah-hea!"
As the early morning gradually transitioned into the later hours, the Yeager and Arlert families found themselves gathered in the lively and vibrant main square of the Trost District. The area was buzzing with activity as crowds eagerly anticipated the arrival of the Scouts, creating an atmosphere filled with excitement and anticipation. Amidst the commotion, the children were firmly reminded to stay close to their families to avoid getting separated in the overwhelming bustle of the event. This reminder was particularly emphasized for Eren, whose adventurous streak often led him astray. Carla, his mother, made it abundantly clear that she would keep a watchful eye on him at all times, a declaration that only served to irritate Eren further, though he had little choice but to comply.
"Let's see if we can find a better place to see for the children, yes?" Grisha asked, turning to his wife.
"That would sound good, yes." She replied with a smile.
Grisha took charge, guiding his family toward a better spot to enjoy the view. He managed to find a few sturdy boxes for the children to step on, ensuring they had a clear vantage point. Eren could barely contain his excitement, practically bouncing in place with an enormous grin spreading across his face. His enthusiasm was so contagious that it quickly rubbed off on Armin, whose own happiness began to mirror Eren's. Meanwhile, Mikasa maintained her usual calm and composed demeanor, but a faint, gentle smile hinted at her quiet contentment.
The crowd buzzed with an electrifying energy, filled with an undeniable sense of anticipation that pulsed through the air. Every person present understood the critical importance of the mission the Scouts were about to embark on. The atmosphere was charged with a mix of hope and determination, their collective attention drawn to the monumental task at hand.
When the announcement was first printed and distributed, it sent waves of excitement through the people. The bold headline, 'The Scouts & Our Savior,' became a rallying cry, a beacon of hope in a world overshadowed by despair. It detailed the crucial objective of the revered Survey Corps: to venture beyond the safety of the Walls on a perilous two-day expedition in search of the legendary Titan Slayer. Their goal was clear yet daunting—to locate this figure of immense power and bring him back to the Walls, where his strength would be instrumental in the desperate battle to safeguard humanity's survival amidst the ongoing war.
"Do you see anything yet, Armin?"
"No, not yet, Eren. You think we'll see Captain Levi in the front or back?"
"Oh, he'll definitely be up front!"
Carla found herself unable to suppress a warm smile as she watched the children. Seeing their laughter and joy brought a sense of comfort to her heart. It was truly uplifting that, even in the midst of such overwhelming hardship and the pain of the tragedy they had experienced, there was still something capable of bringing light to their faces. Watching them embrace these moments of happiness reminded her of the resilience and strength that even the youngest among us can possess.
Erwin had taken charge, leading the Scouts away from their headquarters toward Wall Rose, eventually arriving at the Trost District. The journey proceeded in silence, a steady march on horseback devoid of conversation or inquiries, with an unmistakable atmosphere of unease hanging over the group. As they passed through the inner gate that opened into the district, the brightness of the sunlight momentarily overwhelmed their vision. But as their eyes adjusted and the world came into focus once more, they were greeted by a powerful wave of voices—a chorus of cheers, filled with admiration and hope, echoing through the streets to welcome them.
The cobblestone street stretched endlessly, flanked on both sides by an excited crowd. People gathered everywhere, leaning out of windows, perched on rooftops, their voices ringing out in jubilant cheers that filled the air with a contagious energy. Their faces shone with open smiles, a reflection of hopeful spirits radiating from their hearts. Children beamed with innocence, their wide grins lighting up the scene, while women's eyes glistened with tears of pure joy. Meanwhile, men stood tall, their fists raised in pride, their admiration unmistakable. Together, the crowd created an unforgettable tapestry of emotions, woven seamlessly into a moment of unity. Erwin and the Scouts were utterly overwhelmed by the spectacle, their astonishment evident as they took in the scene. Their gazes swept across the district, disbelief and wonder etched into their expressions as they marched forward, enveloped by the tidal wave of celebration.
"Unbelievable..." Miche was the first to speak. "I don't think the Scouts ever got a standing ovation." He spoke again as he looked to Erwin.
Erwin remained silent, maintaining his calm and composed demeanor as he gazed ahead.
"What gets me, is why do they have to be so damn loud?" Levi then spoke in his usual tone. Annoyed from all the noise.
"Oh, come on and lighten up, Levi! What's wrong with some festivity?" Hange said with a smile.
Levi responded with nothing more than a dismissive sigh, which made Hange burst into laughter. Meanwhile, Erwin quietly took it all in, admiring everything in his mind. Keeping his gaze forward, he absorbed the atmosphere—the sounds, the joy filling the air. If it had a smell or a taste, it would undoubtedly be energizing. Erwin decided to slowly look around to fully grasp everything.
As he let his eyes wander across the sea of faces in front of him, a sense of peace began to settle over him. The heavy weight in his mind seemed to lift, leaving him feeling unburdened, almost as if a renewed sense of hope and vitality had been infused into his spirit. It was a feeling so overwhelming that it threatened to spill over, but before it could, his gaze landed on a particular face—a young boy he recognized. It was the same boy whose hopeful eyes had met his just days before, a look Erwin had turned away from then, weighed down by his own disappointment and the sting of failure.
But now, Erwin did something out of character. His stern demeanor softened as he allowed a small, genuine smile to surface. Raising a hand slightly, he gave the boy a light wave. The uncertainty on the boy's face melted away, replaced by a radiant expression of pure joy. His excitement was mirrored by his small blonde friend standing beside him, their shared happiness lighting up the moment.
Erwin's gaze turned forward once more, his expression calm, but that faint smile lingered, as if etched into him by the encounter. Nearby, Levi's sharp eyes caught the subtle change in his Commander's face. For a moment, surprise flickered across the Captain's usually stoic features as he silently observed this rare and unexpected gesture from Erwin.
Erwin and the Scouts pressed forward, moving through the district with unwavering determination. Confident in their mission, they sought the Titan Slayer, intent on bringing him back to the Walls to secure a genuine chance at survival. An end to struggle, a chance of hope.
The Scouts had passed through the outer gate of the Trost District some time ago and were now moving steadily onward. Erwin glanced up at the sky, observing the sun's position as it climbed higher. From his calculations, it seemed that noon was quickly approaching. Their progress was promising; if they maintained this steady pace, the expedition could commence earlier than anticipated. The thought gave him a fleeting sense of optimism, but his focus soon shifted to what might lie ahead in the ruins of Shiganshina.
The abandoned district held mysteries that gnawed at the edge of his thoughts. Could there still be clues buried within its ruined walls? Evidence that might shed light on the Titans' origins, their purpose, or even the true nature of the world they lived in? These were questions that haunted Erwin like a shadow, always lingering in the corners of his mind. There was a persistent feeling deep within him, an unshakable sensation that answers were tantalizingly close—just beyond his grasp. That proximity to the truth was maddening, like a whisper he could almost hear but not quite understand. This unrelenting urge to uncover the unknown drove him forward, despite the weight of uncertainty on his shoulders.
"Erwin."
Levi's voice pulled Erwin out of his deep thoughts and back to the present moment. Erwin shifted his gaze slightly over his shoulder toward his Captain.
"In the plans you've made, you want my squad to pull recon in Shiganshina. Won't that waste time? The reports clearly stated the Titan Slayer killed all the Titans and sealed the breach. What else are we going to be looking for? I'm all for being thorough, but the rest of the Garrison already did our job for us before leaving for Trost."
Erwin hesitated briefly before responding, carefully considering how to strike the right balance without revealing too little or too much.
"You are correct. But it is always best to leave no room for doubts."
"Right."
Erwin and the Scouts pressed forward on their arduous journey until they finally reached the imposing, sealed outer gate that marked the entrance to Shiganshina. The air was heavy with anticipation as Erwin, maintaining his composed leadership, carefully examined the structure before commanding two of his steadfast Scouts to venture into the gatehouse to activate the mechanisms and lift the colossal barrier. With a deep, resonating creak, the gate began to rise, its movement deliberate and almost foreboding, as if reluctant to unveil the mysteries beyond.
The Scouts stood silently, their breaths caught in their throats, their imaginations racing with grim possibilities. They had read about the devastation, the fall of Shiganshina, and the chaos that engulfed it, but nothing could prepare them for the reality they were about to face. As the gate's ascent revealed the outer edges of the district, the scene unfolded gradually, like the opening of a dreadful storybook. The partial view of the wreckage hinted at the scale of the destruction, casting a shadow of dread over the group. The eerie silence and lingering signs of ruin filled their hearts with a deep unease.
Erwin acted without hesitation, directing his team to advance further into the district. Obeying his orders, everyone gathered together as the two Scouts assigned to open the gates shut them and quickly rejoined the group.
As they navigated their way through Shiganshina, the group was confronted with a horrifying and heartbreaking sight. The remnants of chaos stretched before them—homes reduced to rubble, shattered beyond recognition, while decaying, mutilated corpses lay scattered across the ground, attracting flocks of scavenging birds. The rhythmic clatter of horse hooves echoed in the uneasy silence, amplifying the chilling atmosphere that engulfed the surroundings. Overhead, several Scouts soared through the air, constantly scanning the terrain for any lurking Titans that might still pose a threat. Their primary concern was the unpredictable and dangerous Abnormal Titans that could be waiting in ambush.
"No way..." A Scout whispered under her breath.
"We know what the Titans are capable of. Keep moving." Nifa said sternly but reassuringly. Trying to keep her comrade's gaze forward.
"How many do you think there were?" Ilse spoke softly over to Nifa.
"Too many." Was her only reply.
"We're coming up on the outer gate! Keep your eyes open!" Furlan ordered.
From afar, the massive boulder that sealed the breach appeared to the Scouts as little more than a small pebble resting in the distance. But as they drew closer, their initial perception began to waver, replaced by growing uncertainty about the truth of the story. Could the Titan Slayer truly have lifted this immense chunk of earth with his own strength and strategically placed it to halt the relentless advance of the Titans? Their skepticism deepened as they finally stood at the base of the boulder, gazing upward at its towering presence. Its massive form loomed over them, casting an intimidating shadow that stretched far and wide. For a prolonged moment, the sight rendered nearly everyone silent, their minds grappling with awe and disbelief—except for a select few who seemed less affected by the grandeur of the scene.
"So... this one man is capable of doing all of this and more?" Miche asked in a skeptical tone of voice.
"From the reports, it would seem so." Erwin responded dryly.
"This whole thing is insane." Levi shifted his gaze from the massive boulder to the desolate ruins stretching out behind him, his eyes meticulously examining the scattered remains of the Titans' bones. "How can one man be able to pull all of this off?"
"How many times is everyone going to ask that?" Hange, of all people, voiced a rational perspective, prompting Levi to nod in agreement. The weight of speculation was growing increasingly intense with each passing day. Adding to it didn't help anyone anymore. Especially their Commander.
"Hange is correct. We can no longer bother ourselves with the who, what, and why of these matters anymore. The only way to get these answers is to find the Titan Slayer." Erwin sternly stated, looking to his soldiers with a hardened glare. "Now... everyone dismount and prepare the lifts to bring the horses and carriages up and over the Wall. We are ahead of schedule, and I'd like to keep the pace." He ordered.
Levi took the initiative as soon as Erwin was finished speaking, turning to the rest of the Survey Corps to relay. "You heard him, soldiers! Dismount, unhook the horses from the carriages, and prepare the lifts!"
The Scouts got off their horses as ordered. They proceeded as directed, detaching the horses from the carriages, placing the horses on the wall lifts, and transporting them across. They also took care to ready the carriages for the lifts, securing everything tightly to prevent any supplies from falling.
"Levi, Hange, and Miche. We must go over a few things one last time to make sure we are all on the same page." Erwin said while dismounting his horse, reaching into the saddlebag to retrieve some papers. Turning to face his three officers, he gestured for them to accompany him into a large toolshed, which appeared to have once belonged to a blacksmith. Erwin rolled out a map with drawings and designs on it and pointed on the map as he spoke again. "So to recap, we keep a tight formation and move from clearing to forest. We'll be doing this three times over the course of each day."
"My only question is how are we going to cover that much ground when we're searching in the forest?" Miche asked, addressing the elephant in the room.
"The Titan Slayer had to have made camp somewhere in one of these forests. We're going to start here." Erwin pointed to the large forest on the map where it was reported that the Titan Slayer went here after the events of Wall Maria.
"It still makes sense to start here. You sure you don't want my team taking point on the first phase?" Levi asked, still looking down at the map.
"Hange and her team will take point on the first day, then Miche and his team, then you and your team." Erwin solidified his decision as he looked to Levi.
"Can't let you have all the fun on this one, Levi." Hange said with a sly grin as she crossed her arms and cocked her hip to the side.
This only led to a more half-lidded expression from Levi. Earning a wink and a chuckle from Hange, trying to twist the knife. "Hilarious Hange. You should've pursued a role as the King's court jester instead of being a Scout."
Erwin couldn't help but admire this moment. Everything up to this point felt like a giant gasp of suspense waiting to be exhaled. He knew better than to be optimistic when it came to the day-to-day military matters. Especially expeditions. "Are there any more questions or anything else that needs to be noted?"
The three comrades exchanged quick glances, silently confirming there was nothing else to add. After a brief pause, they shifted their focus back to their Commander and nodded in agreement. Erwin rolled up the map, secured it under his arm, and turned back to his officers to issue a command. "Very well. Let us attend to our men, get those horses and carriages over that wall, and get on with this mission. Dismissed."
"Sir!" They saluted. Except for Levi... of course.
The four Scouts stepped out of the tool shed. Hange and Miche promptly headed toward the units they each commanded. Levi, however, stayed close to Erwin, standing firm and resolute as he stared ahead. Without hesitation, Levi addressed a lingering question directly. "What's the real reason you're keeping me in reserves?"
"If the Titan Slayer is indeed an enemy as many behind the Walls in positions of authority suspect, I will need my best in good condition."
"I knew it. Even you still have second thoughts about this guy. For a second, I'd thought you had gone mad."
"It doesn't hurt to cover all angles."
Eren had returned to his usual routine of chores, yet everything carried an almost otherworldly feel to it, as though a dream had somehow come alive. The bustling crowd, which had surged with excitement during the festivities, eventually dispersed, though it took a couple of hours for the energy to fade and things to settle down. Eren and Armin, brimming with enthusiasm, practically bounced and skipped their way back toward Grisha's carriage. Deep in conversation, they excitedly discussed the incredible possibility that the Survey Corps might return, accompanied by the famed Titan Slayer himself.
Mikasa couldn't contain the joy radiating from her face as she watched Eren. Seeing him so animated, almost like his old self again, brought a comforting sense of relief. His mother, Carla, felt the same. She couldn't help but laugh warmly as she observed the lively pair of Eren and Armin, their boundless energy and playful antics filling the air with youthful exuberance. Mr. Arlert couldn't stop himself from laughing at the mischief unfolding. It warmed his heart to see his grandson so cheerful once more.
Eren carried on with his task in the stables, determined to finish up before the important announcement. With steady effort, he shoveled out the remaining piles of manure from the horse's stall, ensuring every last bit was removed. Once the area was clean, he carefully spread fresh hay across the stall floor, ensuring comfort for the horse. Next, he grabbed an empty bucket and hurried out to the well located just behind the modest barn. With practiced efficiency, he filled the bucket to the brim with cool, clear water and brought it back to hang securely in the stall.
Turning his attention to the horse's feed, Eren approached the feed bag, retrieved the large scooper from its holder, and plunged it deep into the grain. He carried the heaping scoop carefully over to the feeding bucket and poured the contents inside, making sure to distribute it evenly. Satisfied, he returned the scooper to its place and gave the stall a final once-over, scanning every corner to confirm that all his work was complete. Seeing everything in perfect order brought a wave of satisfaction, and Eren allowed himself a small smile, nodding with quiet pride at a job well done.
Eren stepped out of the barn and made his way toward the house. As he wiped the sweat off his face with his sleeve, he reached the back door, opened it, and walked in. "Hey Dad! I'm all done!" Eren called out.
Grisha turned a corner, exiting the kitchen with a small smirk on his face. Wiping his hands with a washcloth. "Excellent, Eren. Now go upstairs and wash up for supper."
"Okay." Eren replied, walking up the stairs.
Grisha walked back into the kitchen and positioned himself beside his wife. Carla was busy at the counter, washing, slicing, and assembling ingredients for a hearty stew. Her expression radiated calm satisfaction as she moved effortlessly through her routine, her hands working with practiced ease. A gentle hum escaped her lips, a melody that accompanied her quiet focus on the evening meal.
However, the tranquility of the moment was abruptly interrupted. A memory or thought—one she believed she'd long since buried—swiftly resurfaced, shattering her peaceful rhythm. Her chopping slowed, the rhythm faltered, and eventually, she paused altogether. Grisha, standing nearby, caught the subtle yet sudden shift in her demeanor. His brow furrowed with concern, and he turned his gaze to her, his expression a blend of confusion and curiosity as he tried to understand what had caused her change in mood.
"What's wrong, dear?" He asked.
"You really need to have a talk with him about joining the Scout Regiment. I'm very worried about that boy." She replied in a caring but concerned tone as she resumed preparing dinner.
Grisha paused briefly, letting his wife's request sink in as he released a soft sigh, a hint of thoughtfulness in his expression. He moved toward the simmering pot of beef stock, the rich scent already filling the air with an inviting warmth. Carefully removing the lid, a wave of steam rose up, swirling and vanishing as if carrying away the tension in the room. The deep, savory fragrance spread even further, creating a soothing sense of comfort that seemed to envelop the entire kitchen. Grisha seized the moment of calm to respond, reaching for a spoon to gently stir the broth. His movements were deliberate, ensuring the herbs and seasonings that had settled would once again infuse the bubbling liquid, enhancing its flavor and drawing out its full richness.
"I will talk to him tomorrow. I promise." That was all he managed to say, as if any further explanation would serve no purpose. There was no point in trying to convey the profound sense of futility surrounding the situation. How could he possibly make Carla understand? After everything that had transpired, all that their son had endured, and especially considering the events of the day, it was almost certain that Eren would remain resolute in his decision to join the Scouts. Trying to explain this to her would only heighten her anxieties, intensify her fears, and add to the weight already pressing down on her heart.
Grisha's mind swirled as his inner thoughts began to rise, pressing against the surface. The vivid memory of his encounter with his son in the mysterious realm of the Paths before the break of dawn replayed itself with haunting clarity. He recalled Eren's commanding words, the instructions that weighed heavily on him. Was this the moment? Was now the time to act? The question echoed within him like a relentless drumbeat.
A storm of tangled ideas and uncertain futures surged through his mind, crashing like violent waves. He tried to anticipate what lay ahead, desperately attempting to piece together the unfolding puzzle. The Attack Titan. The Founding Titan. The overwhelming legacy of power and responsibility coursed through his thoughts. When should he reveal the truth to Eren? Should he do it tomorrow? Could he confide in Carla about any of this? No, he couldn't risk it. This was far too precarious, far too monumental. Every move he made had to be precise and deliberate. But time wasn't on his side. He had to decide, and he had to do it soon. The weight of his choices loomed over him with suffocating urgency.
"Uh, hun?"
"Hm?" Grisha was pulled back to reality as he glanced over his shoulder, Carla looking at him, then looking at the pot he was now stirring faster and faster.
"I think the broth is good now." Carla said with a light chuckle and a warm smile.
"Oh, haha... I guess so."
After thoroughly washing away the grime and sweat that clung to him, Eren dressed himself in a fresh set of clothes, feeling the clean fabric against his skin. He took a moment to loosen up, rolling his shoulders to release the tension that had built up throughout the day. A satisfying pop sounded from one of them, prompting a deep sigh of relief as he realized the day was finally nearing its end. Ready to step back into the world outside his room, he opened the door and stepped into the hallway. There, standing patiently, was Mikasa, her familiar presence offering a quiet sense of comfort. She greeted him with a soft, gentle smile that carried warmth. Eren met her expression with one of his own, a faint but meaningful smirk playing at his lips, acknowledging the bond they shared in that simple, silent exchange.
"Hey." Eren simply greeted.
"Hey." Mikasa also simply replied.
"So what'd you do today?" Eren asked with a raised eyebrow.
"I helped your mother after we got back home. We went to the market for the vegetables. She needed me to carry a few things."
Eren glanced past Mikasa's shoulder, aiming a quick look into the room where Armin and his grandfather stayed. The door stood open, and the room was dark and vacant. Curious about what had caught Eren's attention, Mikasa turned to glance over her shoulder. "Armin and his grandpa had to go back to town. Your dad wrote him a prescription for more rosemary. Armin went with him to the pharmacy. They'll be back in time for dinner."
"Want to go outside? You and Armin never really got the chance to look around." Eren proposed as he started walking down the stairs.
"Sure."
Eren and Mikasa descended the staircase together, stepping into the main hallway of the house. Eren guided her through the cozy living room, past the warm and inviting kitchen, and straight toward the back door. With a quick motion, he opened it and stepped outside, leading her down the wooden steps that opened up to the expansive backyard. Mikasa moved to stand beside him, her eyes carefully scanning their surroundings. She noticed two distinct paths stretching out across the yard. One path curved toward the stable, where Grisha kept the family horse and parked the carriage neatly beside it. The other path veered off toward a closed gate, which seemed to lead to a narrow alleyway beyond.
"You had to clean the barn today?" Mikasa asked as she looked at Eren.
"Mmm-hmm." Eren slowly hummed in acknowledgment. "That was probably the worst chore I've ever had to do."
Mikasa chuckled at Eren's childish blight before giving her opinion. "Oh please, Eren. It couldn't have been that bad."
"You try shoveling horse crap most of the day."
Just as Mikasa was about to respond, the gate to the alley slowly opened, and Armin stepped out alongside his grandfather, Mr. Arlert. Mr. Arlert appeared to be in better condition, standing more upright and moving with less stiffness, though he still relied on his walking cane. Armin noticed his friends, smiled warmly, and gave them a wave. "Hey guys!" He called out.
Eren and Mikasa waved back at him while Armin glanced at his grandfather, giving a slight nod. Leaving his grandfather's side, he hurried over to join his friends as Mr. Arlert headed indoors. As he passed the three small children, he removed his hat, placed it on Armin's head, ascended the stairs, opened the back door, and stepped inside. Mr. Arlert shut the door behind him, rested his walking cane against the wall, and headed into the kitchen. Grisha sat at the table with a newspaper in hand. When he heard Mr. Arlert step into the kitchen, he lowered the newspaper slightly and offered a faint smile.
"Ah, Mr. Arlert. Back from the pharmacy, I see."
Mr. Arlert cleared his throat, as he scratched his chin before speaking. "Yes, they had more rosemary there. Thank you again for writing the prescription."
"It's no problem at all." Grisha said as he flipped the newspaper back up to read.
Carla grabbed a cup from the cupboard, filled it with water, and set it down in front of the elderly man, who responded with a warm smile. "Thank you, dear." He said as he took a sip of water. Clearing his throat again.
"It's no trouble at all. I saw Eren and Mikasa go outside. Is Armin out there with them?" Carla asked with a raised brow.
"Yes, he's out there. He was hyper for the rest of the day after seeing the Scouts."
Carla held up her hand to her mouth as she giggled before she added. "Tell me about it. Eren was practically jumping out of his skin while he was cleaning the barn."
Eren, Mikasa, and Armin walked toward the open gate that led into the alleyway. The alleyway was a massive staircase made of rock and stone, winding its way through multiple levels of the district. As they entered, Eren found a spot to sit, settling down on the cool stone steps. Mikasa quietly took her place beside him on his right, while Armin joined them on his left. The three young friends paused for a moment, letting the events of the day sink in. The soft glow of the mid-evening sun bathed the district in a warm light, casting long shadows across the narrow alleyway. They sat there silently, their small smiles capturing the fleeting sense of peace they felt in that moment. After a while, it was Eren who broke the silence with a bold declaration, his voice determined and steady as they all gazed ahead at the horizon.
"When I get older, I'll be joining the Cadets. From there, I'll be joining the Scouts." He said, the smile fading and being replaced with a stern look of determination.
Mikasa and Armin turned their gazes toward Eren, their expressions reflecting unwavering resolve. Each of them carried a determination in their eyes, fully aware that opposing him on this matter was now a futile effort. They had both reached the same understanding—if they couldn't sway Eren from his chosen path, then they would stand by his side, offering their unwavering support no matter what lay ahead. The weight of the moment lingered between them, and it was Mikasa who finally broke the silence, her voice steady and deliberate.
"I'm with you, Eren."
Eren stared at her, his face filled with shock, his mouth slightly parted in astonishment until he finally managed to speak. "Damnit, Mikasa. I'm not trying to drag you in on this. There's no point in following me to my death." He was now standing, looking down at her as he tried to assert his point and make it clear. His eyes were fixed on hers with a stern gaze.
Mikasa rose to her feet in front of Eren, taking him by surprise. She met his intense stare with a look of determination and responded. "Yeah, and if I can help it. Then it won't mean your death. I made a promise to your mother that I'd watch your back. We're family, Eren. Where you go, I go. If you want to join the Scouts, I'll go. If you want to find the Titan Slayer. I'm with you. You're not the only one that has to thank him. He saved my family, too."
"I'm going, too!" Armin yelped out as he stood up. "Mikasa is right. Eren, you're right too. Nothing will change unless we make it change. The Titan Slayer is the key to humanity's survival. We have to find him and help him. I'm joining the Scouts, too!"
Eren and Mikasa were taken aback by Armin. They had never seen him so self-assured before. His tone was underscored by the determined look in his eyes. Initially, they were unsure how to respond until Eren, with a slight smile, placed his hand on both Armin's and Mikasa's shoulders.
"Alright, together then." Eren stated, looking up toward the Wall where the sun was almost set.
The Scouts had successfully crossed over to the far side of Wall Maria. Those assigned to guard duty were on high alert, scanning the horizon for any sign of Titans. To their astonishment, there was not a single Titan in sight. Instead, they found only the remains of fallen Titans, a grim testament to the recent devastation. This unsettling scene stretched along both ends of Wall Maria, characterized by widespread death and destruction. Erwin promptly instructed his team to prepare and establish a formation. The Scouts busied themselves with readying the horses and hitching up the carriages, while Erwin found himself captivated by the massive crater in the ground—a place where the Titan Slayer had once descended from the Wall. Mesmerized by the grandeur and mystery of the spectacle before him, he observed the scene with a sense of awe. The abundance of evidence mounting before them made the previously incredible reports increasingly plausible. Erwin studied the peculiar shape and pattern of the crater, which resembled a massive spider's web etched into the earth. His gaze then traced the deeply embedded boot marks leading away from the crater. Finally, Erwin turned his attention toward the valley, absorbing the somber reality of the numerous fallen Titans scattered throughout the landscape.
"Incredible..." is the only word he could think of.
Levi approached from the side and halted to absorb the scene unfolding in front of him. As his eyes widened with astonishment, he took in the enormous crater. His glance then shifted to Erwin, who remained steadfast and didn't meet his eyes. Erwin's expression was characteristically calm and unyielding. Levi's gaze traced the path of Erwin's eyes, leading him to the ominous valley of death. He stood there, absorbing the gravity of what lay before them. Levi walked up to Erwin's side, saying nothing. Erwin decided to ask Levi a question.
"Still think the Titan Slayer isn't capable of all this? Name somebody else besides yourself that can even slightly measure up to this."
Levi collected himself before he answered his Commander. Sighing before stating. "I hope you understand entirely that if you don't convince this guy to help us. Then mankind is fucked."
"Agreed."
Miche approached from behind Erwin and Levi, experiencing a similar wave of emotions and thoughts as they had moments before. Unlike the others, however, he found himself unable to tear his eyes away from the crater, his expression frozen in shock. Despite his intention to speak, he was initially rendered silent, his words trapped in his throat. It took a moment of gathering himself, clearing his throat, and giving a shake of his head before he was able to collect his thoughts and proceed to inform his Commander about the unfolding situation.
"Erwin, we're all ready to move out on your order." Miche stated.
"Excellent."
Erwin, Levi, and Miche proceeded back towards the other members of the Scout Regiment. Upon reaching the area, Erwin communicated with the Scouts on guard duty through a series of hand signals, indicating that it was time to regroup and return to the formation. He then climbed onto his white horse, signaling his readiness to continue. Levi and Miche acknowledged his silent command with a nod, and each began to make their way back to their respective units. Yet, before they separated completely, they paused, exchanging a meaningful glance. It was Miche who broke the silence, speaking first.
"See you out there, Captain."
"Yeah." Levi acknowledged as he started walking away.
Levi let out a deep sigh as he walked purposefully towards his horse, his mind racing with thoughts. To him, this entire mission seemed like a reckless, misguided venture. But then again, when it came to Erwin, it all made sense. Erwin had always been like this—constantly testing limits for the sake of humanity's survival. Levi knew full well that Erwin was planning something bold for his first expedition as the leader. Yet, he could never have imagined the sheer audacity of Erwin's plans. Even without the looming threat of the Titans, Levi couldn't have anticipated the extent of Erwin's actions. Upon reaching his horse, Levi mounted it with ease, greeted by Isabel's trademark confident grin and Furlan's warm, reassuring smile.
"Hey, Bro. Ready to go save the world?" Isabel sarcastically asked.
Levi remained silent, simply shaking his head, which made Isabel chuckle softly. Furlan nudged Isabel on the shoulder, giving her a serious look.
"Come on, Isabel. He's clearly got a lot on his mind right now. As our Captain, give him a break, will you?" Furlan requested.
"I was just kidding, geez." She replied, pouting and rolling her eyes.
"Knock it off, you two, and make ready." Levi ordered in his usual authoritative tone. Keeping his gaze forward to Erwin.
Erwin turned his gaze toward the soldiers of the Survey Corps, standing resolute and ready. The moment they had all been preparing for had finally arrived. This expedition was crucial, destined to become a pivotal chapter in human history. The survival of humanity depended heavily on its success in the coming days. The air was thick with anticipation as the soldiers met their Commander's steadfast and unwavering gaze. Every one of them stood poised, awaiting the decisive command that would set the course of their mission and forever alter the destiny of those living within the Walls. The mission was to seek out a hero from the unknown, someone with unimaginable powers capable of feats beyond comprehension—powers that had defeated countless Titans and moved enormous boulders. Erwin lifted his hand, exuding an air of commanding presence that punctuated the tense atmosphere. Many of the Scouts felt their breath catch as he finally gave the rallying cry that would initiate their bold venture.
"The thirty-fourth expedition will now commence! Scouts! Move out!"
A/N: I just want to apologize for how long this took. I didn't intend on it being over 2 months without a chapter update. A lot has been going on, life just works that way. What a bummer.
