It took both Harry and Peter a solid year to train and educate the former guardian of the universe to prepare him to be the entity that is fear, Parallax, Why did it take this long? Harry would gladly tell you that because their student was so stubborn in his ways, getting him to listen to reason was a major obstacle.
It took them half this time to convince him why he needed this training in the first place, the fact that he wished to make a Lantern Corp whose power was derived and fueled by fear was not exactly a secret to the Guardians, he was quite vocal about it. However, Peter was quick to remark that using fear without ethics or moral restraints could only lead to the formation or creation of tyrants.
So it took them both six months to educate Krona on the ethical and moral applications of fear, the fact is that Harry had most to say about it, after all, he was the son of the green goblin responsible for such horrific acts and levels of destruction if anyone knew the effects of fear it would be him.
Aside from the fact that Norman was responsible for such devastation, he was also a studious and great educator in fear tactics. Meaning if Harry ever disagreed with his father in any manner or form he would do something so terrifying that he was scared into compliance. The fact is Norman was a tyrant both in business and in how he treated his family.
So of course Harry had quite a few examples to give in these many hours of lectures and lessons, honestly, things were so bad that even the newly recruited green lanterns knew who they were by name, but the chef was still happy to hear about earth cooking techniques and practices and they did help the chef at least two evenings a week.
Some of the lanterns were wondering why there were people from such a primitive world on Oa, and instead of getting to the point where Peter would end up fighting someone for a perceived insult on their home planet, Harry simply said that questions of that nature must be first asked the Guardians, they are the most qualified to answer these type of questions.
So for three months, the Guardians had to hold massive conferences to explain why were two people from a backwaters planet like Earth doing at Oa, the situation got so bad that they finally said that they were there to train the entity that would be the power behind a second lantern corp that will be formed in the future.
This made the lanterns worry, and asked what emotion would power the central battery for this new corp, and the guardians flat out told them, fear. Well, that made the green lanterns relax since they thought that they had no reason to be afraid, they had a ring empowered by the light of will, which according to them was the most powerful weapon in the universe.
After a year the central battery of the yellow lantern was constructed and unlike the green lantern battery, this place looked to be a sphere, the size of a small moon. In reality, it was this size because Parallax wanted plenty of space to feel comfortable after his merging with the very power of fear.
True, he was a lot smaller when he was in his original form, soon enough the rings that would be powered by fear would be crafted. The only problem is that Parallax wanted to test them out before he empowered them, Parallax was going to live inside the yellow central battery, so he wanted to see what these rings can do.
The guardians considered this for several months and decided that in fact, they had the perfect test subjects to test the power of these rings, they chose that the former instructors of Parallax being such experts on fear would be perfect to test the power of these yellow lantern rings.
Peter only agreed if they promised that this was only temporary, they both knew who the future leader of the Yellow Lanterns was supposed to be and Peter did not want to disrupt a fixed point in the timeline.
Since they had to do something about the Red Lantern Corp they had to figure a way to deal with Atrocitus, Harry wanted to reason with the man knowing that the man who caused the genocide of his people was judged and punished for his actions. He wants revenge because the guardians did not bring the killer of his people to justice, except that they did.
Peter, on the other hand, considered the man too far gone to reason with, he was a man according to Peter completely and utterly consumed with blind rage, he will never forgive the guardians, even if he is told justice was done, Peter argued that Atrocitus simply would want revenge for not preventing the crime in the first place.
"So we both know the power of the Red Lanterns can be used for good, hell, we are even planning to make the one that represents greed to become a force for good, but Atrocitus will not want to do anything else other than to destroy the Guardians and everything that is connected to them, which means the Lantern Corps even if that includes himself."
So they found themselves in quite the situation, they could go to meet the Red Lanterns but even if they did as Harry suggested there is no guarantee they will not ignore it and try to kill them anyways for no other reason than their rage got the better of their judgment.
Never mind that most of the people that become Red Lanterns lose their minds in rage. So first and foremost they have to get the blue lantern corp started as soon as possible, and in preparation for doing that, they talked to the two guardians who created the blue lanterns in a different timeline.
The blue lantern rings were powered by hope, and this hope was the only power strong enough to counter the rage effects of the red lantern ring, it was also the only way to remove a red lantern ring from anyone without killing the person. So if they are going to have any chance of either capturing or ending the threat of Atrocitus then the blue lantern ring members were an absolute necessity.
Peter also thought of the possibility that Atrocitus might want to fight them by himself and keep them busy while the other red lanterns attack Oa, considering that this was the first generation of the Green Lanterns, and they had no clue how to properly use their rings, simply to make them efficient members they needed some rather tough love training.
Never mind in trying to defend Oa, if they couldn't even use the rings to defend themselves. There were seven of them and only two of them were male, so this was not going to be an easy group to train, since they were members of a diverse section of species.
As they flew down towards the seven of them when they called for them to come to a rather large open area in the city, "Good, you made it. You both know who we are, and we are going to be the ones to teach you how to use the green lantern power rings, how? These yellow rings can do everything your can, so follow our instructions."
One of them asked why would they listen to two guys who were younger than his kid brother, that is when Peter used his ring to make a fist construct appear from his ring and went to catch the person that said that, he picked him up and tossed him up in the air and caught him when he was falling close the ground.
"First lesson, expect the unexpected, the glow of your ring like you saw on this guy shows that a hostile is going to attack you, the only limit to this ring is your imagination, you can make anything that your minds can think of, and I do mean anything, from weapons to shields and even explosives, there are no limits other than your imagination."
"There is one thing that must be said, those rings are powered by the power of will, so the stronger your will is, the more of a punch your constructs will have, and the more damage they will be able to take, It is our jobs to teach you to be ready for anything, and after these following three months, you will be."
Everyone began to understand what Peter had said and they looked at his friend which they knew as Harry, "You will learn everything you need to know how to fight, defend, and move using your rings, we will teach you everything that you will need to be good enough to be members of the Green Lantern Corp."
Harry looked at them and smiled, "And before I forget welcome to hell, I hope that you all survive. The first rule of Power Ring training, do not talk about Power Ring training. The second rule is do not complain about Power Ring training and when in doubt go back and think of rule one."
They thought that was a joke, they were however very much wrong, for the next three months they put them through practice drills, and exercises, learning about everything the ring could do and even learned about the dangers of flying through space.
Two months in and Peter was giving them a lecture about the dangers of flying through space and he saw that they were pretty much ignoring him, which upset him, he decided to do something more drastic for them to learn the seriousness of what he was talking about.
He immediately created a small sun construct and immediately the people began to be pulled towards it, Peter and Harry had anchored themselves, and after seeing that the others did something similar to what they saw Harry and Peter do.
"This boys and girls is your average sun, flying close to one of these things is very dangerous, just remember, the bigger you are the faster you burn. Now I feel this shows why when I talk about the danger of flying near a sun is not something that you lot should ignore. Is that clear?"
The construct ended and immediately they stood at attention like regular soldiers, "Yes, Drill Instructor!" was the only reply from the seven students. Peter simply said that he was planning to take it easy on them this day, and allow them to rest, but after they blatant ignored his lecture, he decided that instead, they will run combat drills for the rest of the day.
They were nervous after that, after the first month, the training was brutal, they put them through every situation imaginable as both Harry and Peter used their rings to create practice arenas and situations they had to use their power rings to get out of, this was not the sort of training where they could take it easy.
One screw-up, one second of losing focus, and they will pay for it with pain, by the end of the first month they had the seven of them working together and through drills like well-oiled and precise machines, they no longer made excuses, instead, they found solutions, they no longer got distracted and their will was stronger than they could even remember.
In the second month, the training intensified, and as they were training these men the two guardians that they talked to were happy to tell the other guardians that indeed they managed to form the Blue Lantern Central Battery and the Blue Lantern Corp would be ready to recruit members as soon as the new power rings were made.
The recruits had been broken down to the very core and built up like they had been put through military training, but this was ten thousand times worse, if someone asked the seven of them if their instructors had anything that even looked like mercy or compassion, the only answer they could say was rule one.
Three months had gone by the blue lanterns rings were being recruited and they were arriving on Oa as the recruits finished the last part of their training the thing Harry and Peter called the Crucible. As soon as these seven finished some people that knew them before could hardly recognize them anymore.
Some of them loved to joke around and make fun of a situation, but now they were serious, focused, and had no desire to fool around, even the Manhunters looked at them and had to admit they respected their new attitudes and look on life. These people had been recruits but now they can proudly say they are members of the Green Lantern Corp.
As the new blue lantern corp recruits saw them knowing they will have to undergo the same training, they asked one of them what did they think about the training, or if they had any tips about it, the young female looked at the person who asked, and simply said, the First rule of Power Ring Training, Do not talk about Power Ring Training."
That is when her friend told her to relax and they just wanted to know what they will face so they could be ready, that is when the young female simply said, the second rule of Power Ring Training, Do not complain about Power Ring Training. This made the blue lantern recruits wonder what sort of hell their instructors put them through to have them become like that.
Well, the fact that the yellow lantern rings worked was a great success to report to the other guardians, they had initially worried much like Harry that having the power to use fear in others would corrupt the minds of anyone who used the yellow power rings.
Peter and Harry became the unofficial drill instructors for the recruits, the blue lantern recruits were filled with hope and thought that they had no reason to be afraid, they would soon learn how wrong they were. The training had been as brutal as what the green lantern recruits underwent and the fact was widely known by the people on the planet.
Mothers would tell their children that if they don't straighten up and take their studies seriously they will have the lantern drill instructors tutor them, too many children were the stuff of nightmares, but to parents and teachers on the planet of Oa, they were a blessing.
It took them an entire year to get enough blue lantern members and green lantern members ready for their trip to the planet that was the home base for the Red Lantern Corp. Each of the members that went looked like they were ready for war, and nothing would get in their way of achieving their mission.
"In the brightest day, In the darkest night, no evil shall escape our sight, let those that worship evil's might, beware the power of our lanterns light," Harry told Peter about the idea of modifying the lantern oath, very much like Harry expected he said it was an interesting notion, but no, they would not change the lantern corps that much.
The next day they all took off towards the planet where Atrocitus and the red lantern members were still recruiting members, they had to act now before the red lantern corp grew so large that it would be impossible for them to take them down, the fact that they had powers that would corrupt or weaken them was not lost to them the blue lantern members were told how to prevent it or cure it.
The fight from Oa to their destination was quiet and they kept aware of their surrounding in case some of the red lanterns were to ambush them, to which Harry said they could if they still had the capacity for independent thought, which sadly was something he was not expecting from members of the current Red Lantern Corp.
As they landed on the planet they began to use their rings to get a reading of every major power signature on the planet, and sure enough, Peter found Atrocitus he was apparently in the middle of lunch because the way he looked was like he was biting the head off some animal.
Then again from his scan of the planet, the animals on the planet were not exactly defenseless or friendly, he could feel through the web of life that every single creature on the planet was more than ready and willing to kill them just to make a meal out of them.
"Alright, Blue Lanterns keep an eye on the enemy and help the Green Lanterns, Green Lanterns I want a shield around this planet to prevent escape and around this area as a staging area. Harry and I will engage the enemy to draw them towards us, and we will attempt to disable as many of them as possible, but the one we must either capture or eliminate is the current leader of the Red Lantern Corp."
One man asked why was this one person so dangerous that required all of them to come and hunt him down. Couldn't they get this person to surrender? "We are dealing with a person and allies that are empowered by rage, they are going to be as much of a conversationalist as a rabid animal, and as a rabid animal they are deadly."
"As to why we need to capture or eliminate him? He is the one that wants to destroy all life in the entire universe, not just Oa, do you think a threat to that many people does not merit this sort of response?"
The young woman who asked realized what Harry said, she honestly didn't think the threat would be this dangerous or that their mission would be this important. Some of the other people near her wondered if this was just another training mission, clearly from what Harry said that was not the case.
The fact is that the following day after their camp was established nine people using what seem to be red lantern rings came at them trying to catch them unawares. The fact that they had been drilled so much about being ready for ambushes made it pretty obvious that they were ready.
Green Lanterns used their constructs to attack them from a distance while the Blue Lanterns used their constructs to capture and even remove the red lantern rings from the ones they managed to capture. Peter and Harry had already gone to where Atrocitus was waiting for them.
"So the guardians sent their killers to finish me off, what a pathetic joke, they say they represent justice and protect people, but since one of them caused the destruction of my sector and killed most of my kind, they didn't even bother to think about punishing him for their crimes, a slap on the wrist and genocide is forgotten."
Harry began to laugh and said that was pretty funny coming from a warlord of all things, he sure didn't get that title for him helping poor and weak people, but he was wrong about something, the one that did that genocide was tried, and punished, and a punishment worse than death.
The man began to clap his hands as he just heard the best joke he has ever heard in his entire life. "Sure, the Guardians punished one of their own, and you are here to try and make peace by telling me this, who are you trying to trick here? I don't believe the words of my would-be assassins, I can practically smell the bloodlust coming from you."
Peter looked at Harry and smiled, he told his friend that they at least tried to do it as he wanted, so now they would have to fight him and knock him out long enough for at least one Blue Lantern to come and help them remove his ring.
Harry began to make light constructs of creatures that would be anyone's worst nightmare and they were attacking Atrocitus without any mercy or compassion, the way his attacks were he was not trying to capture him, his attacks with his constructs had only one purpose, to kill.
Peter acted as a shield to the attacks by Atrocitus who used the power of rage to become stronger and sometimes he would catch him unawares and counter his attacks. The two of them were doing their best to either try and kill him or knock him out till reinforcements came.
Then minutes later and the reinforcements finally came, Atrocitus was still fighting as one construct of Harry had him pinned to the ground as it was a large serpent with eight heads. One Blue Lantern finally arrives and much as it has happened with the other red lanterns he used his construct to remove the red lantern ring from Atrocitus.
This humiliation, having lost even with nine other members to his group, and to top it off they managed to remove their rings and kept them in a lockbox like some trophies taken from animals in a hunt. He was so furious that he didn't notice that their fighting had weakened the ground where he was, and as he ran to attack them and recover the rings the ground gave way.
It took the combined effort of all the people to form a construct tough enough to pull him out of the hole and bind him to take Atrocitus back to Oa to face punishment for his crimes, which as a warlord they would be many.
Just as they finally arrive at Oa, something flew out of him and ran towards the yellow central battery, so as the Guardians were telling Atrocitus about his many crimes and the fact that Peter and Harry were telling him the truth, in the yellow central battery however the Butcher was arguing with Parallax while Ion and Adara were mediating between the two of them.
It was decided that Atrocitus felt no remorse, and no guilt over his actions, to him it was just a matter of him being him. No prison can hold him with the possibility of him getting the power of rage again, and no planet would keep him in place, so they decided to use something the planet of Krypton used for their most deadly criminals, the Phantom Zone.
As this was taken care of and the entities of fear and rage finally got to speak their reasons and they finally accepted that they each had a reason to be upset, they accepted each other and strangely enough became good friends, which made the entity of will and hope think that it was strange and kind of touching.
Harry was just glad that this entire mission about the Red Lanterns was over, till Peter reminded him they only dealt with Atrocitus, now they have to find people to become the new Red Lantern Corp and so they will need to train them and train the Butcher to use rage positively and constructively.
They have the green, blue, and yellow lantern corps on the side of Oa and the Guardians, now they need to focus on getting the new red lantern corp to do the same but that leaves four other lantern corps that either need to be created or found and trained.
So as much as he wants to tell Harry, they will not be able to return home to be with their wives and symbiotes for a very long time. Harry could only say that they even have a way to work out the stress, to which Peter laughed and told him they can use the training like they often did.
The next corp that they did everything to get ready to be created was of course the Star Sapphires as one of the female Guardians said that she could form a Lantern Corp empowered by the power of Love. As such Peter was quite happy to see that they didn't have to do a thing to create that Lantern Corp.
The new red lanterns thought they could muscle their way and get away with things, sadly much like the Butcher both Peter and Harry proved them wrong, in a matter of a month they wiped the recruits into shape and unlike in other timelines these Red Lanterns could use a wider range of abilities and powers of their rings, Butcher after his training felt weirdly enough at peace.
The training was brutal but effective, Rage was used as a motivation for their actions without letting rage influence their decisions. They felt anger but did not let the anger turn them into mindless berserkers.
All in all, they became one of the most combat-oriented Lantern Corps who would be sent to deal with situations where combat was the only answer. Outside of combat, these new red lanterns were rather friendly and pleasant people, they made friends with the blue and green lanterns but in combat, the same person was someone their enemies would find terrifying.
While this was happening some of the guardians were wondering, why didn't the yellow lantern corp have any new rings made and had their recruits, Peter and Harry had been examples of people who were empowered by something most would consider negative while using that power for good.
Why didn't one of them accept the mantle of being the leader of the yellow lantern corp have rings made and start recruiting members to the yellow lantern corp? Harry was focused on his work, the only time he wasn't working was when he was helping the chef at the mess hall with Peter.
Peter on the other hand refused to answer that question, no matter who asked him or when he was asked, he simply would turn the topic of conversation to something else, so the guardians always wondered this question, why?
