Chapter 58
Running through the empty streets of Diego Garcia, Anwen desperately tried to scream for help, but no sound emitted from her parted lips, bringing fresh tears to her freckled face as she continued to evade the predator following behind her. The roar of his engine spurred her to quicken her pace as she turned down the street and bolted towards the petrol station.
Nearing the facility, her heart sank upon seeing the decrepit building: its doors were smashed in and its windows were boarded shut, while the native vegetation completely took over. 'How?! Why,' she mentally argued as she quickly changed direction just as the familiar sound of an engine grew closer.
Opting to run to the supermarket, Anwen felt her legs starting to cramp up, yet she pushed herself forward, only to be met with the same outcome as before: the building was in complete shambles and there wasn't a soul present to come to her aid.
In a final attempt to evade her pursuer, she turned another corner and sprinted off towards the apartment building, hoping it wasn't in the same state as the previous structures.
By some miracle, the apartment building wasn't in complete disarray; however, it certainly wasn't like how she remembered it. Regardless of its current state, she needed to seek refuge inside before she was discovered.
Climbing through the broken section of what was once the entrance, Anwen ignored the pain as her skin made contact with the glass shards. She had bigger things to worry about than some bits of glass stuck in her arms.
The approaching sound of an engine spurred her to sprint through the lobby and over to the stairwell, to which she continued to run up the seemingly endless stairs until she reached the ninth floor where her apartment was.
Checking the front door, she was relieved to see that it was unlocked, to which she quickly entered and immediately barricaded herself inside by locking the door behind her and pushing the couch in front of it.
Allowing herself a moment of rest, Anwen glanced around the unit and frowned upon seeing the abandoned remains of her former home: Dust and cobwebs littered the vicinity, while the air smelled old and stale. Stepping into the small kitchen, she saw the dried, shriveled remains of her succulent plants and Kenobi's empty dog bowls lying abandoned on the floor. Moving over to the living room, she frowned upon seeing a layer of dust lining her once pristine bookshelf. Her photos and knick-knacks were covered in cobwebs, while her books were coated in white mold.
Moving over to the bedroom, she was met with a disheartening sight: her Canadian flag, which had once proudly hung above her bed, now laid tattered upon her sinking mattress, while her stuffed moose (Morris) sat alone and abandoned against a dusty pillow.
'What's happened? Why is everything like this,' she silently asked herself as tears rolled down her freckled cheeks. As she cried, a slow/eerie knocking sound emitted from her front door, signaling that her pursuer was on the other side.
'No..' She trembled in fear as the knocking grew louder and louder until there was a sound of wood splintering, signaling that she had been found!
Panicked, Anwen shot up from her bed, completely drenched in sweat, while Kenobi immediately rushed to her side and began licking her face. Although it had been a week since the stalking incident, she still had a sense of fear whenever she was alone. While she took comfort in her dog's presence, she missed the safety and reassurance she felt when her sparkmates were near.
A pang of worry settled within her chest as she thought about the frontliners', to which she immediately felt them trying to contact her through their shared bond:
::Hello.::
::Ani, is everything alright? Sunny and I just felt a wave of fear emanating from your end.::
::Oh, yes, I'm alright. I just had a nightmare. It's over now, though.::
::Would you care to tell us about it, sparklight?::
::..In my dream, I was in some kind of futuristic apocalypse, yet I was still in Diego Garcia. I was being chased through the streets and tried calling out for help, but my voice was muted and there was no one around to assist me. Eventually, I made my way over to the apartment, where I discovered that everything was dusty and decayed. Then there was a loud knocking at my door before it started to breakā¦And then I woke up and Kenobi started licking my face.::
::I'm sorry you had to experience that.::
::It's alright. Nightmares aren't exactly uncommon for me, but I appreciate your concern.::
::I wish we could physically be there for you, Ani. It's been awful not having you close by.::
::I know the feeling. I'm just glad Kenobi is with me at night.::
::So are we.::
::Indeed. Although, he better not think he's going to be sharing the bed with us when we return.::
A smirk lined the young ginger's face at the thought of Kenobi sharing the bed with the three of them. Since his latest growth spurt, he's been claiming more space atop the mattress. She even had to buy him a new harness because his original one was becoming rather snug around his chest.
::He'll probably try to squeeze onto the bed with us for a while, but I wouldn't worry too much about it. I recently ordered him a large dog bed, so he'll have his own space to claim by the time you both return. In the meantime, he's claimed your side of the bed, Sideswipe.::
::That little scrapper!::
::Hey now, don't you be calling our baby a scrapper.::
::'Our baby?' I don't recall either of us impregnating you, sparklight.::
::Oh, you know what I mean.::
There was a wave of humor emanating from their end of the bond, which brought another smile to her face. She missed their playful banter, as well as their tender displays of affection. Climbing out of her bed, Anwen stepped over to her kitchen and filled the kettle with water before placing it on the stove to boil, to which she then retrieved a packet of Lavender Dreamtime tea and set it aside.
::So, how's Liam and Maggie been lately?::
::They're good. I learned that they spoke with her family and are currently planning when they'd like to have their wedding. So far, it's looking like they might have it around late August. Both of them suggested having it be a destination wedding in Australia, which makes sense because her family lives around the Queensland and the New South Wales regions.::
::Makes sense. Diego Garcia isn't exactly known for its venues.::
At that, Anwen playfully rolled her eyes while retrieving a mug from the cabinet. Glancing over at the digital clock on the stove, she emitted a sigh when it read 2427. She'd normally be unbothered by that if it was the weekend; however, she had to be at work in the morning and hated losing out on sleep. Yet, she couldn't bring herself to lay back down at this time, hence why she opted to make some tea, hoping it would soothe her.
::Will you two be willing to accompany me to Australia when the time comes?::
::As long as we're not sent out on another mission, then, yes.::
::If nothing else, we'll put in a request; however, should Optimus need us, we'll have to stay behind.::
::That's understandable.::

Feeling the keys click beneath her fingers, Anwen emitted a sigh as she sent off another work email before a familiar *kaplink* drew her attention to a mini Reese's peanut butter cup laying beside her mouse. Glancing up, she met with a bright smile from Maggie:
"Figured you could use a little pick-me-up."
"Merci."
"Of course. By the way, how've you been feeling lately? You seem a bit..off."
*sigh* "I haven't been sleeping very well," she admitted while leisurely unwrapping the foil covering her prized chocolate. "I woke up last night in a panic and had to fix myself some Lavender Dreamtime tea to soothe my mind."
"Sounds like you could use another girls-night. What do you say?"
"That would be lovely. Merci, Maggie."
"Anytime. By the way, this is off topic, but Liam and I settled on August 23rd as our wedding date."
"Alrighty, I'll just go ahead and mark that on my calendar." With that, she grabbed a pen from the chipped Wizard of Oz coffee mug she had been using as a pencil holder, and wrote a reminder on the calendar she had hanging on her cubicle wall.
Afterwards, both women returned to their previous tasks and resumed with their work; however, as she was about to hit SEND on another email, Anwen's desk phone rang, prompting her to answer: "Good afternoon. This is Systems Analyst Anwen Bleu of N.E.S.T. Office 1 speaking; how may I help you?"
*:Hey, Bleu, this is Dagny.:*
"Oh, bonjour! How can I assist you?"
*:Actually, this is sort of a last minute request, but would you mind looking after Morticia for a few days? I just got an emergency call from home and need to head over to the States asap.:*
"Sure, I can look after her for you. If you want to swing by my apartment after work and drop off your keys, you're welcome to do so."
*:Thanks, Bleu.:*
"Of course." With that, she hung up the phone and smiled down at Kenobi, "Looks like we're cat-sitting for the next few days."
Perking up his ears at her statement, the young K9 began wagging his tail at the prospect of seeing his feline friend again.

Sure enough, as soon as the work day ended and Anwen was back inside her apartment, Dagny stopped by to drop off her keys and a small list regarding Morticia's feeding schedule/portion size.
Once the young brunette headed off to catch the next flight off the island, Anwen and Kenobi walked down the hall and over to her apartment, where upon opening the door and stepping inside, they were greeted by Morticia.
The young black feline sauntered over to the pair and emitted an adorable *meow* in welcome before playfully bounding off down the hall, to which Kenobi trotted after her and initiated a (mock) brawl with her. Of course, neither of them were actually fighting or hurting one another as it was just for fun.
Closing the door behind her, Anwen laughed at their adorable antics before stepping into the kitchen and retrieving Morticia's food bowl off the floor. Afterwards, she opened the designated 'kitty cupboard' and retrieved a container of dry cat food before setting to work measuring out the instructed amount.
Hearing the familiar sound of her kibbles being scooped and dumped into her bowl, Morticia immediately trotted over to the redheaded woman and began anxiously meowing for her food.
"Here you go, sweetie," Anwen cooed as she placed the little bowl back onto the floor before picking up the adjacent one and filling it with fresh water, to which she then set it back down and smiled as Morticia happily began to purr while crunching on her kibbles.
