Elena arrives, determined to do her level best. Bonnie warmly greets her, gesturing for her to sit at the table. Marcel sits at the head, his expression serious but welcoming.
"Thank you for coming, Elena," Bonnie begins.
"Are you a gambler, Miss Gilbert?" Marcel Gerard asks.
Elena shakes her head.
"I'm not either but we have to gamble in this case. I'll go to the grand jury, get an indictment..."
"And I will arrest her," Bonnie chimes in.
"Finally! Thank you," Elena says, relieved.
"And hopefully, that'll keep her behind bars until the trial's over," Marcel remarks, "then we go down to the wire. We reexamine every shred of evidence and pray before the trial's over, we'll find it..."
"What do you need me to do?" Elena asks as she grips the armrests tightly.
"Motive, Elena. Help us find the evidence that Hayley Mikaelson deliberately chose to kill her husband at that exact moment because of this specific event." Marcel leans forward as he stares at her intently. "There is significant circumstantial evidence, but I need more to convince the grand jury. We're particularly interested in any financial details that might link Hayley to a motive for Kol's death. Anything unusual you can recall?"
Elena takes a deep breath, thinking back to her conversations with Kol. "You know as much as I do at this point. She spent thousands and thousands of dollars they didn't have."
Bonnie focuses on Elena. "Do you know if Kol kept anything hidden? Documents, records, or anything that might help us trace the financial issues back to Hayley?"
Elena's eyes flicker with hope. "He mentioned that Hayley was involved in some questionable dealings with money, but he didn't have all the details."
Marcel exchanges a meaningful glance with Bonnie. "If we can trace those financial irregularities and establish a clear motive, it will strengthen our case significantly."
Bonnie leans back. "We'll need to follow the money trail and gather as much evidence as possible. She rests her hand on Elena's forearm. "If you can provide us with any documents or records Kol might have kept, it could be crucial."
"I don't have any of his financial documents, Bonnie. He had a safety deposit box."
"We'll subpoena the contents." Marcel looks at Bonnie.
Elena squeezes her eyes briefly when tears begin to well up and then locks onto Marcel's gaze. "I'll do whatever it takes to ensure Hayley doesn't get away with this."
Mr. Gerard offers a reassuring smile. "I have no doubt you'll find what we need. Keep me updated with any new developments. We're getting close, but I need that final piece to bring it all together."
The fluorescent lights in the office cast a harsh glow on the stacks of financial documents piled high on the desks. The room is filled with the hum of computers and the faint rustle of papers as District Attorney Gerard guides Elena into the room. Bonnie follows closely behind.
"Elena, these are the financial documents we seized from Kol and Hayley's house," Marcel explains, gesturing to the stacks of papers and files. "We need your help to go through them. Any discrepancies or irregularities could be crucial in establishing a motive."
"I'll do my best. Kol mentioned she bankrupted them. There might be something here that points to Hayley's guilt."
Bonnie steps forward and offers a reassuring smile. "Your insight and personal knowledge of Kol will be invaluable. Take your time and let us know if you find anything significant."
Elena takes a deep breath and sits at the desk. She begins methodically sorting through the documents looking for anything out of the ordinary. Bills, bank statements, and financial records pass through her hands. Each tells a part of Kol and Hayley's financial history.
Hours pass, and the weight of the task presses heavily on Elena. The room grows quieter as everyone focuses on their work, the sense of urgency palpable.

Damon comes in, carrying a couple of take-out bags, and enters the room with a warm smile despite the tension in the air.
"Hey," he says softly, placing the bags on the desk. "I thought you could use a break. I brought some food."
Elena looks up, her eyes lighting up with gratitude. "Thank you, Damon. I didn't realize how hungry I was."
They sit down together, unpacking the food. They eat quietly, and Elena is grateful to have Damon in her life.
As they finish their meal, Elena's façade starts to crack. The frustration and exhaustion finally catch up with her, and she can't hold back her emotions any longer. Tears fill her eyes, and she looks at Damon, her voice breaking.
"I feel like I'm failing him. I should have seen this coming. I initially had misgivings about Hayley, and now Kol is dead. It's my fault."
Damon's heart aches at the sight of her pain. He moves closer, taking her hands in his. "Elena, none of this is your fault. You did everything you could. Kol wouldn't blame you, and you shouldn't blame yourself either."
Elena shakes her head, tears streaming down her face. "But if I had done something sooner, maybe he'd still be here. I should have trusted my instincts about Hayley."
Damon's eyes soften with compassion. He pulls her into a gentle embrace, letting her cry against his shoulder. "Kol knew you were always there for him. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, things are beyond our control. You've been incredibly strong through all of this."
Elena sobs quietly. Her body shakes with the release of her pent-up emotions. Damon holds her tightly. His presence is a steady anchor in the storm of her grief. "You're not alone in this," he whispers. "We'll get through this together. We'll find the truth, for Kol's sake and Hope's. But you need to give yourself some grace. You're doing everything you can."
Elena looks up at Damon as her tears begin to subside. "Thank you. I just... I miss him so much. I feel so lost without him."
Damon's expression is filled with unwavering support. "We all miss him. But we have to keep going, for Kol and Hope. We'll find the evidence we need, I promise you."
The grand jury room is solemn and serious, the air thick with anticipation. District Attorney Gerard stands at the front, a series of carefully organized documents, photographs, and evidence arrays on the table beside him. The members of the grand jury are a mix of ordinary citizens. They sit attentively and are ready to hear the case presented before them.
Marcel takes a deep breath, his expression resolute. "Ladies and gentlemen of the grand jury, today we are here to review the evidence in the case against Hayley Mikaelson, formerly Hayley Thompson, concerning the suspicious death of her husband, Kol Mikaelson."
He begins by displaying the financial records and collection agency notices. "As you can see, multiple large transfers and unusual purchases were hidden from Kol Mikaelson. These financial irregularities suggest a potential motive rooted in financial desperation."
Next, he presents the ballistics report and the re-enactment footage. "The re-enactment of the shooting incident, conducted by Hayley herself, shows significant inconsistencies. The angle at which she claimed to have handled the firearm does not match the forensic evidence. This discrepancy strongly suggests that her statement was fabricated."
Marcel takes a moment to let the gravity of the evidence sink in before moving on to the testimony from Kol's close friends and family. "We have testimonies from Kol's closest friends and relatives, detailing his growing fear and suspicion toward Hayley in the days leading up to his death. He confided in them about his concerns, indicating a clear state of alarm."
He then presents the background information. "It's important to note that Hayley's first husband, Jerod Thompson, also died under suspicious circumstances, with his death ruled as an accidental shooting. However, the patterns in both cases show striking similarities that cannot be ignored."
The grand jury members exchange looks of concern and deliberation as the weight of the evidence impacts them.
Mr. Gerard concludes his presentation, his voice firm and unwavering.
"Ladies and gentlemen, the evidence before you paints a disturbing picture. The financial motive, the inconsistencies in Hayley Mikaelson's statements, and the similarities between the deaths of her two husbands cannot be dismissed as mere coincidences. We are asking for an indictment to formally charge Hayley Mikaelson with the murder of her husband, Kol Mikaelson."
The room is silent as the grand jury members deliberate. After what feels like an eternity, the foreperson stands, the verdict clear in her expression.
"We, the grand jury, find sufficient evidence to indict Hayley Mikaelson for the murder of Kol Mikaelson."
Marcel feels a sense of profound relief and satisfaction.
Justice, at last, is within reach.
The morning sun is bright as Detective Bennett and a team of officers pull up in front of Hayley's house. The air is crisp, and the tension is palpable as they prepare to execute the arrest warrant. The officers move with practiced precision and their expressions are serious and focused.
Bonnie steps out of the lead car. She nods to the officers, who fan out to cover the exits. One officer approaches the front door, his hand poised to knock. The sound echoes through the still morning air.
Hayley opens the door, her expression shifting from surprise to confusion as she looks at the uniformed officers. "What's going on?" she asks anxiously.
Bonnie steps forward. Her tone is calm but authoritative. "Hayley Mikaelson, we have a warrant for your arrest in connection with the murder of Kol Mikaelson. Please step outside."
Hayley's eyes widen and a flicker of panic crosses her face. "This is ridiculous! You can't be serious."
The officers move in, their presence a silent but powerful reminder of the gravity of the situation. Bonnie holds up the warrant. "We have substantial evidence against you, Mrs. Mikaelson. Please cooperate and come with us."
Hayley's defiance falters, and she steps back with trembling hands. "I didn't do anything wrong. This is a mistake."
"You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be provided for you." Bonnie reads her rights
As the officers move to handcuff her, Hayley's composure cracks. "You're making a huge mistake! I'm innocent!"
Bonnie meets her gaze. "The evidence will speak for itself. Let's go."
Hayley is led away in handcuffs.
Bonnie watches as she is placed in the back of the police car.
