Summary:
KITT despised the cold since it was so harsh on his systems, but he realized it was even harder for Michael.
KITT knows a car shouldn't have an opinion about cold weather, but he can't help but feel sluggish on those chilly mornings. Every turn becomes a cautious endeavor as the engine struggles to warm up, and a slick layer of frost covers the roads. He is committed to precisely navigating through the frost despite the difficulties. It just takes a bit of extra care on the accelerator, allowing the feel of the tires on the icy pavement to guide his movements. As the sun gradually rises, melting away the frost and illuminating the path ahead, KITT gains confidence, responding more eagerly to each command. The warmth from the morning sun seeps in, energizing both the vehicle and its driver, ready to tackle whatever the day may bring.
This time, the pair are on vacation, with no assignments and no bad guys to chase. Michael adjusts his seat and glances at the snow-covered hills, mentally preparing for the day's challenges while KITT monitors the surrounding area, alert for potential issues. The tranquil beauty of the landscape provides a stark contrast to the tasks at hand, yet it instills a sense of purpose in them both as they venture forth.
"What's our ETA to the chalet, buddy?" Michael inquired as he shifted slightly in the driver's seat.
KITT's voice filled the space with a calm assurance, "Calculating now, Michael. We should arrive in approximately twenty minutes, barring any unforeseen obstacles."
Michael nodded, appreciating the efficiency of his trusty companion. As the road stretched ahead, he felt a thrill of anticipation for the weekend ahead, hoping to unwind and recharge amidst the serenity of nature. The gentle sway of the trees lining the road created a picturesque backdrop, contrasting the sleek interior of the car. "I can't wait to explore the ski hills," he mused, glancing at KITT's dashboard display, which flickered with navigational details.
"Just a few more miles, and we'll be there," KITT responded in his smooth, reassuring tone.
Michael smiled, feeling the excitement build within him as he envisioned the crisp mountain air and the thrill of gliding down the slopes.
"Michael, I never thought about asking you until now. Why did you choose to go skiing instead of our usual trips to the beach?" KITT inquired, mildly curious as the Trans AM cruised along the winding mountain road.
"I wanted to try something different this year," Michael replied, grinning. "The mountains have always intrigued me, and I thought it would be a great change of pace."
KITT flashes the voice modulator, processing Michael's answer. "I can see the appeal of the mountains, but do you think you miss the sun and sand?"
Michael chuckled softly, glancing out the window at the passing scenery. "I might, but the fresh air and breathtaking views will be worth it," he said, his excitement evident. "Besides, we can go to the beach at any time."
A siren warns of an impending avalanche as the car and driver approach the ski chalet. Panic spreads among the skiers as everyone rushes to find safety, their laughter and excitement turning into a frenzied rush for the lodge. The duo, realizing the gravity of the situation, quickly scans the area for a secure spot away from the looming threat. Michael's heart quickens upon spotting a sturdy tree line that provides some shelter. Without hesitation, he veers the car toward the trees, hoping to find refuge before the snow tumbles down the mountainside.
The car reaches the trees just in time as the snow tumbles down the mountainside, blanketing the ground and car in a thick layer of white.
Michael's breaths quicken as he sees snow outside KITT's windshield. He grips the steering wheel tightly, the tension in his body mirroring the weight of the snow. Inside the car, there's a dim red light, but the creeping isolation begins to seep into his thoughts. Michael glanced at the dashboard, the familiar glow of KITT's systems offering a small comfort amidst the encroaching darkness. "Stay with me, buddy," he murmured, sensing the seriousness of their situation as the snow continued to fall relentlessly.
The snow stopped tumbling minutes later, but a thick blanket of white completely engulfed the car. Michael's heart raced as he realized the severity of their predicament; he had to find a way out before the cold seeped in and extinguished all hope. "KITT, are you alright?" he asked, his voice steady despite the rising panic in his chest.
The car's AI system hummed to life, its familiar voice breaking the tense silence. "I'm running diagnostics. I have minor damage to some of my secondary systems. A reboot will correct the problem, but I'll need approximately five minutes. What about you, Michael?"
Michael starts to shiver. "I'm cold, KITT," he said softly, his breath visible in the chilly air. "Can you activate the climate control and keep me warm while you reboot?"
"I'm sorry, the heater is one of the systems affected. In the meantime, your gym clothes are in the backseat. You can layer yourself. Once I'm back online, we can turbo boost out of here," KITT gently said as Michael rummaged through the back seat. He located a thick jacket and quickly slipped it on, feeling a bit of warmth envelop him.
"Thanks, KITT. I hope it doesn't take long," he replied, glancing at the dashboard, hoping for the bright LEDs of KITT's systems to come back online.
"I promise, Michael. No matter what happens, I love you." KITT's lights dim as he starts the shutdown.
Michael paused, taken aback by KITT's words, his heart racing. "I love you too, buddy," he whispered. Finding a pair of sweatpants, he pulls them on over his jeans. The sound of rustling fabric barely registered as his mind raced with thoughts of their shared adventures.
Michael can't help worrying about KITT. What if the reboot failed? What if KITT remains offline? Michael shivers at the thought, recalling their countless adventures and relying on KITT's intelligence and capabilities to navigate dangerous situations. He understands that their bond goes beyond mere functionality; KITT is not just a machine but a companion, a friend, his soulmate, who has saved his life more times than he can count. The idea of losing that partnership is almost unbearable, and Michael vows to do whatever it takes to ensure KITT's safety and restoration.
Time appears to pause as Michael witnesses the sequential illumination of lights, signifying the completion of KITT's reboot. The powerful thrum of the engine fills the air, and Michael feels relief. KITT's console lights up, displaying a series of diagnostic reports, and he knows they are ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead.
"Michael? All systems are operational. I'm ready. We need to turbo boost now because the oxygen in my cabin is running low," KITT warned.
Michael nodded, quickly adjusting his grip on the steering wheel as he pressed the turbo boost button, feeling the familiar thrill of acceleration as they soared toward safety.
The car remains still while KITT's Anamorphic Equalizer scans the area. KITT also heats the cabin for Michael's comfort.
Despite the avalanche, the chalet miraculously remains intact and awaits their arrival. "We made it, KITT. Let's see if there's a garage where I can park you."
The pair found an indoor parking lot near the chalet, and Michael eased the sleek vehicle into a space with a sense of relief. Once parked, he stepped out to take in the surrounding beauty, the soft glow of the chalet lights illuminating the fresh snow as he approached the entrance.
*TWO BEEPS*
"Michael?"
"Yeah, KITT?" Michael responds to the comlink.
"Keep warm." The car's voice echoed with fondness.
Michael chuckled softly, adjusting his jacket, knowing KITT always had his back, even in the most unexpected situations.
Note:
It was a lot of fun writing the story.
