Andy unlocked the condo door and stepped back with a smile. "Home sweet home."
Sharon stepped over the threshold and stopped. Every nerve in her body let out a sigh of relief. Home. It had been a long two weeks in the hospital. A small grin tugged at her lips. The blanket she loved to snuggle under as she read was folded on the back of the chair. Her book she had last been reading sitting on the table. But if she had, had her way she wouldn't be looking at this site at all.
Andy touched her shoulder. "Hey. Why the tears?" She swiped at her cheek.
"I didn't realize I was crying." She smiled uneasily up at him. "I'm happy to be home."
Wrapping his arm around her, he pulled her in close pressing a kiss to her temple. "I'm happy you're home too."
"It's so quiet in here. Is Rusty in class today?"
Andy closed the door and skirted around her. "He's on his way to the airport."
Sharon followed him into the kitchen. "What do you mean he's on his way to the airport?"
Andy rummaged through the cupboards. "Are you hungry? Thirsty? I could make you some tea."
"Andy. Who is Rusty pickā¦" Sharon bit the inside of her cheek. "Ricky."
Andy pulled a box of tea out of the cupboard and turned towards her. "Emily and Ricky are just worried about you. I convinced them to wait to come, but they need to see you."
Sharon ran her hand across the back of the chair and sighed. "I just don't like being like such a burden."
Andy's mouth dropped open. "We said in sickness and health Sharon. I don't see you as a burden, and I know the kids don't either. If anything, I'd say they were mad at themselves for not being here."
"That's just it though. They should never feel as though they need to take care of me."
They stared at each other in silence, Andy's eyes searching hers. She ran her hand through her hair and turned towards the hallway. "I'm going to go lay down. Let me know when Rusty and Ricky get home."
Andy tipped his head to the side in affirmation.
Sharon made her way into their room. Her eye caught sight of a new photo on her dresser. Their wedding photo. Such a happy day. Her heart truly had never been so full. She knew that she should be thankful to still be here. Part of her was. But the other part couldn't get over making everyone drop their lives to rush to her side. She loved having her kids around, but not when she was at her weakest. Being the one taken care of, not the caregiver.
Laying back on the bed, she closed her eyes and let out a long breath. Recovery was going to be trying in more ways than one.
