Chapter 2: To School

Mal hadn't gone far before she was pelted in the face with a blueberry.

"Ha-ha, Jay," Mal said, wiping blue juice from her cheek. "Hi Evie."

"How did you know I was here?" Evie asked, stepping into view.

"Yeah, how?" Jay repeated, holding back laughter.

"The joke is only funny once Jay, so you really don't have to do it every time Evie is near." Mal replied.

"What, you don't like the blue look?" Jay teased.

"I like purple."

"What are you guys talking about?" Evie asked, confused.

"Nothing," Mal replied.

"Just that Mal used to call you 'Blueberry,' so when you're near her, I hit her with a blueberry," Jay grinned. "And I never miss."

"Jay! Evie really didn't have to know that!" Mal frowned.

"Why not?" Jay asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Never mind," Mal sighed. "Let's just go to school."

"Ya, we don't want to be late!" Evie said.

"Uh, ya. We do," Mal and Jay said, almost in unison.

"Oh, that's what I meant."

Suddenly, A red, white, and black blur flew by. It screeched to a stop right in front of Mal, Evie, and Jay.

"Hi, Carlos," Evie said. "What happened?" Carlos was shaking and panting.

"I burned a hole in the wall of my mom's closet," He said. "She was so mad. I think she actually may have put fire in her ears. But then she got a DOG. I saw it with my own two eyes. It was there. Right in front of me! So I ran, and now I'm here."

"Wait, slow down," Mal said. "A dog? I thought your mom hated dogs. Except for that stuffed dog of her's. I think she calls it B-B."

"The real question is why would you burn a hole in your mom's closet?" Jay asked.

Carlos looked down. "It was an accident. I was building a heater because I get so cold at night in the winter, but it was too hot so it burned a hole straight through the closet."

"I'm just curious, so sorry if I sound like you mom," Evie said. "Are the furs ok?"

"The furs are fine," Carlos sighed. "But sometimes I wish they were gone. Maybe then my mom would love me."

Meanwhile, Jay and Mal had been whispering.

"We know where the-" Mal started.

"Who the…" Jay corrected.

"It's both," Mal replied. "The dog is in your house-"

Carlos' eyes grew wide, and he stifled a scream.

"And it's the B-B puppet thing. Not a real dog," Jay finished.

"I mean, think about it," Mal said. "Where would your mom get a living dog from on the Isle of the Lost?"

Carlos blushed, and shuffled his feet uncomfortably. He knew they were right. So he, Carlos, the son of Cruella De Vil, had run away screaming from a piece of fur.

"You're a scaredy-cat, Carlos-or a scaredy dog," He muttered to himself, as the four unexpected friends walked on to school.

Jay's stomach grumbled. As usual, he was the only one of them who didn't have breakfast. His dad, Jafar, expected him to steal his own breakfast every morning. Jay had had no luck stealing this morning, so he was starving.

"What did you guys have for breakfast?" Jay wondered.

"A big ugly troll," Mal replied.

"You eat trolls?!" Evie gasped, and her jaw dropped open.

"Of course she doesn't," Jay laughed. "Mal means that she was served by a big ugly troll. I'm guessing she ordered a dirt coffee, since she gets that every day. I'm also guessing it was a stolen dirt coffee. Am I right?"

"You are," Mal grinned. "I was out the door before he even realized I took it."

"Good, now you're almost half as good a thief as me!" Jay teased.

"We're even and you know it," Mal corrected, placing her hands on her hips. "But I may be a bit better."

"Liar."

"Liar yourself."

"I know," Jay agreed. "We're both liars."

"Wicked liars," Mal smiled.

"Do you two ever lie?" Jay wondered, motioning to Evie and Carlos.

"Sure, to our parents," Evie answered.

"How?" Jay asked.

"Well, I told my mom this morning I packed my blush and lip gloss so I could reapply

at school, but I don't actually have them. I didn't want to be late to school!"

Jay raised an eyebrow.

"I mean, I definitely wanted to be late to school. I just didn't want to, you know, um… uh… listen to my mom! Because I'm evil. So… ya."

Mal rolled her eyes. Evie had a lot to learn. So did Carlos, who was afraid of a puppet. Mal giggled. She couldn't help it! Carlos had run screaming from B-B, looking more afraid than the peasants who had run screaming from Mal. Jay was a good thief, though he was never able to steal himself breakfast. Maybe that proved Mal was better than him. But at least the four friends had one thing in common: they were all wicked in their own special way. Evie was vain, Carlos could be callous when he wanted to, Jay was a thief, and Mal, with her mom, was the leader of the Isle of the Lost. Maybe they weren't truly evil, but at least they were wicked. The four friends approached the winding, overgrown path which led to school. Just then, the school bell rang. All four of them looked up and grinned, even Evie. They were late.
