The trio walked through the quiet outskirts of the town, their senses alert for any further disturbances. The air was still, but the recent attack had left a lingering tension that none of them could shake. Aoko, ever the one to break the silence when it got too heavy, turned to Archer with a sharp glance.

"So, are you finally going to tell us what those things were?" she demanded, her tone edged with irritation.

Archer glanced at her briefly, his expression unreadable. "They don't feel natural, but I don't think they were entirely magical constructs either," he said vaguely. "A hybrid of some sort."

Aoko frowned, clearly unsatisfied. "That's not an answer. You said you might've found out why you're here—what does that mean? Did you know about those things? Are they tied to you somehow?"

Archer gave her a faint smile, more like a deflection than reassurance. "It means I'm piecing things together, the same as you. As for whether they're tied to me… maybe. Or maybe not."

"'Maybe'? Are you serious right now?" Aoko threw her hands up in frustration. "You're impossible, you know that?"

"Sometimes," Archer admitted with an air of amusement.

Alice, padding beside them, finally spoke, her tone calm and measured. "If they weren't natural or entirely magical, where do you suspect they came from? An external force, or something tied to this place?"

Archer's gaze flicked to Alice, and for the first time, his expression softened into something closer to genuine thoughtfulness. "External," he said after a moment. "They didn't originate here. Their mana is foreign—like they were brought in from somewhere else. Someone, or something, is pulling the strings."

Alice nodded slightly, her expression thoughtful. "I see. And do you think they'll return, or was this an isolated incident?"

"They'll return," Archer said without hesitation. "Creatures like that don't move without purpose. Whoever sent them will want to finish what they started."

Aoko watched the exchange with increasing frustration, her eyes narrowing as she pointed accusingly at Archer. "Wait a minute. Are you actually answering her questions? Why does she get the straight answers while I get the runaround?"

Archer's lips quirked into a faint smirk, his steel-gray eyes glinting with amusement. "Because it's fun messing with you."

Aoko stared at him, caught between disbelief and annoyance. "Are you kidding me right now?! That's your reason?"

Alice, usually maintaining her usual composed demeanor, let out the faintest chuckle, barely audible but enough to catch Aoko's attention. Aoko turned to her, eyes narrowing further. "Wait… Did you just— Did you laugh?"

Alice's expression remained serene, but there was a faint pink tinge to her cheeks. "I have no idea what you're talking about," she said smoothly, though her tone betrayed a hint of amusement.

"Oh, you did! You're laughing at me!" Aoko exclaimed, pointing an accusatory finger at her. "What is this, gang up on Aoko day? First, this guy shows up and acts all mysterious, and now you're taking his side?"

"I didn't say I was taking anyone's side," Alice replied evenly, her composure intact despite the teasing glint in her eyes. "You're simply easy to provoke."

Aoko groaned, throwing her hands up in exasperation. "Unbelievable. I'm out here saving the day, and this is the thanks I get."

Archer chuckled softly, his smirk widening as he glanced at Alice. "I think we've found our dynamic, haven't we?"

Alice gave a small, almost imperceptible nod, her gaze meeting Archer's briefly. It wasn't quite approval, but it was closer to an acknowledgment that the man's presence, while strange, wasn't unwelcome. Aoko, of course, didn't miss the exchange.

"Oh, great. Now you two are bonding," Aoko muttered, crossing her arms as she stalked ahead. "This is just perfect."

Archer watched her go, his smirk fading into something more subdued. "She's sharp," he said quietly, addressing Alice without looking at her. "And she's got strength to back it up. But she doesn't let herself stop and think sometimes, does she?"

Alice glanced at Aoko's retreating figure, her expression neutral but thoughtful. "Aoko relies on instinct and force because they've served her well," she said softly. "But she's not without reason. She simply hates showing it."

Archer nodded, his gaze thoughtful. "I see. You two balance each other, don't you?"

Alice's lips twitched into the faintest of smiles. "That's one way to put it."

The three of them continued their patrol, the tension from the earlier attack fading into the background as they walked. Despite the lingering questions and uncertainties, there was an unspoken sense of camaraderie beginning to form—a tentative alliance forged in the chaos of their shared circumstances.

The trio continued to walked through the quiet town outskirts, their steps muffled by the stillness of the night. Aoko, still ahead of the others, glared into the darkness as if it were the source of all her frustrations. Behind her, Alice and Archer maintained a more measured pace, their presence calm but alert.

"You know, for someone who's supposed to be helpful, you're really good at being annoying," Aoko muttered without looking back. Her tone was sharp, but the underlying exhaustion was hard to miss.

Archer's smirk returned, faint but ever-present. "You're only mad because I don't hand over answers the way you want."

"Mad?" Aoko spun around, walking backward as she jabbed a finger at him. "I'm not mad. I'm just saying, if you're going to stick around, maybe try not being a cryptic pain in the ass for once."

Archer chuckled, unbothered by her words. "Point taken. But sometimes it's not about what you say—it's about how you say it. You'd be surprised how much you can learn by listening."

Aoko's eyes narrowed, and she opened her mouth for another retort, but Alice cut in smoothly.

"Archer," she said, calm but curious, "you mentioned earlier that these creatures were foreign. If they didn't originate here, then their presence must have been orchestrated. Do you have any sense of who—or what—might be behind it?"

Archer's smirk faded, replaced by a thoughtful expression. "Not yet. Their mana felt… unfamiliar. Whoever brought them here are using methods I've seen before, but of a different era."

Alice's eyes sharpened at his words. "A different era? Are you suggesting these creatures came from an era close to the Age of Gods or does the culprit know of arts from the Age of Gods?"

"Could be," Archer admitted. "Or it could be something else entirely. I can't say for certain right now." His gaze drifted upward as if searching the stars for answers. "I've dealt with things like this before, but they don't usually come without a reason. Someone brought them here. And whoever they are, they have a goal in mind."

Alice nodded slightly, filing away his words for later. "A goal implies intent. And intent implies a target."

"Exactly," Archer said, his tone grave. "And if those creatures were any indication, they're just the beginning."

Aoko, who had been listening despite herself, finally snapped. "Oh, so now you're spilling your guts? What, Alice gets the full story, and I get scraps? What makes her so special?"

Archer turned to her with a calm but amused expression. "Because she asks the right questions."

Aoko sputtered, her hands clenching into fists at her sides. "I ask plenty of good questions! You're just playing favorites!"

Archer's smirk returned, and he tilted his head slightly as if considering her words. "Or maybe I just enjoy seeing you worked up. It's… amusing."

Alice's usually composed demeanor cracked slightly as she let out another faint chuckle, quickly covering her mouth to stifle it. But the sound didn't escape Aoko's notice.

"You're laughing at me again?!" Aoko exclaimed, her frustration reaching its peak. It felt like icy daggers would form from her glare, "I'm out here trying to protect this place, and you two are treating this like some kind of joke!"

Alice, regaining her composure, spoke in her usual calm tone. "I'm not laughing at you, Aoko. I'm merely… entertained by the dynamic you two have."

"That's the same thing!" Aoko growled, throwing her hands up in exasperation. "Unbelievable. I'm surrounded by traitors."

Archer's quiet laughter broke the tension, and for a moment, even Aoko's irritation faltered. His amusement wasn't mocking—it was warm, almost companionable as if he truly found their banter refreshing. It was a subtle but significant shift, one that neither Aoko nor Alice could ignore.

"Alright, fine," Aoko grumbled, turning back around. "But don't think I'm letting you off the hook. If you're going to hang around, you'd better start pulling your weight."

Archer's expression softened, and he nodded slightly. "Fair enough. You've got my word."

The trio continued their patrol, the silence between them now carrying a strange sense of camaraderie. Despite Aoko's grumbling and Archer's teasing, there was an unspoken understanding forming among them—a mutual respect born from the chaos they had already faced together.

As they walked, the faint sound of rustling in the distance caught their attention. All three stopped in their tracks, their senses sharpening instantly.

"Another one?" Aoko muttered, already preparing to summon her magic.

Archer narrowed his eyes, scanning the darkness. "No. This feels different."

Alice stepped forward, her gaze calm but alert. "Then what is it?"

Before anyone could answer, a low growl echoed through the air, followed by a flash of movement in the shadows. Whatever it was, it was coming—and fast.

"Looks like we're about to find out," Archer said, summoning his twin swords with a twitch of his hands.

Aoko and Alice exchanged a glance before readying themselves. Whatever lay ahead, they were no longer fighting alone.

Author's Note: Hello everyone! Thank you for reading! I hope your weekend is going well. If you haven't noticed, I've been naming the chapters after tracks from the Mahoyo Official Soundtrack. I've mainly named them by which soundtrack fits the overall atmosphere for the chapter. For this chapter specifically, I was crossed between the chapter name I chose and Kyuchi/Herald. It'd help if you check out the official soundtrack and listen to said tracks while reading. If you do, let me know if you think it fits or not. Thanks again for reading and I hope you enjoyed.
