Spider-Man: A Dark Plot

Now onto the story.

Chapter 7

Sighing, Jamie thought carefully to himself, trying to think how to approach things. He was entering school again for a new day, luckily there had been no drama over night and for once he was early, nothing had actually pulled him away from his journey to school.

But he still felt uneasy. 'Something is...I know there's a problem somehow, I just can't put my finger on it. Like something today is just going to be off. Worse, something tells me that I'm gonna be in real trouble today...Hope it's got nothing to do with the Assassin's.'

He shook his head, he had more to worry about than just himself after all, such as the one other person he knew would likely get caught up in things due to their activities. For sure enough he saw Jennifer up ahead. Increasing his pace slightly, but not actually running, Jamie approached her.

"Hey, morning." He greeted her, keeping his voice low.

Jennifer turned to face him, gave him a smile and returned his greeting. But then the smile disappeared and her expression became tight.

Jennifer looked around and then spoke quietly. "Hey, so...things aren't looking too good, huh? Tombstone attacking you?"

Jamie nodded. "Yeah, it's worse than that, he's just one person who was after me. I also had to deal with Shocker and there may be others...there are specifically seven more who are after me...Kingpin put a bounty on my head. Ten Million to whichever one of them kills me...But those are just the ones he hired, he's made it a free for all, so any of the criminals in this city can take a shot."

Jennifer grimaced at this and shook her head.

Finally she let out a low whistle.

"Wow, sucks to be you." She quipped.

Jamie raised an eyebrow. "Me? You are gonna be targeted too, after all, you chased down the Rose and I see you took the drive back."

He nodded down to her bag, where the open part showed the drive stashed inside it. She flushed but shrugged.

"Well, I didn't get paid?" She explained.

Jamie shook his head. "Seriously. You should lay low, this isn't gonna blow over any time soon."

"I'll bet Spider, I'll bet." She remarked flippantly. "Well, I'll see you around."

With that she walked away and Jamie grimaced, she clearly didn't take the warning to heart and that worried him. Shaking his head he turned and headed for his locker, grabbing what he needed. He closed his locker and smiled as he spotted Sam approaching.

"Hey, Sam, morning."

Sam smiled at him as he stepped up. "Hi Jamie, what's up, all good today?"

Jamie nodded. "Yeah, I-"

He paused, tensing but quickly composed himself.

"Yeah, it's all good." He said cheerfully. "So...anything planned for today?"

Sam shrugged. "Not really, might check in at the Bugle, or head to the studio to get some extra practice in. I'll see after school."

Jamie nodded slowly, biting his lip, so far so normal.

"Alright, cool." He replied. "I might have some things to do myself, I'll see."

Sam smiled. "Okay, well, maybe we'll have ideas next time we talk, gotta head to class."

With that he headed off and Jamie watched him go with narrowed eyes.

'Okay, what the hell?' Jamie wondered, perplexed. 'Why did my Spider-Sense go off when Sam showed up?'

That left him worried and further confused, wondering just what was going on.

He was still lost and worried about that strange occurrence when he was jolted out of his thoughts by another, thankfully, friendly voice.

"Jamie, hey, Jamie, you okay?"

He turned and smiled lightly when he saw Laurel.

"Hey, sorry, my mind was elsewhere." He said. "What's up Laurel?"

Laurel smiled. "Nothing much, just glad to see you made before class this time."

Jamie laughed awkwardly at that. "Yeah, well, fair enough."

They began walking to their first class.

"Hey...have you seen Sam today?" Jamie asked, deciding to take a chance.

Laurel glanced at him, raising an eyebrow. "No...why?"

Jamie shook his head. "Ah...It's nothing really, just, something seemed off, I'm worried about him."

"I'm sure it's nothing." Laurel said. "But hey, if there is a problem, he'll have you, right?"

Jamie smiled at that. "Yeah, thanks-"

Jamie stopped, eyes wide as his Spider-Sense went crazy, at the same time, there was a distinct rumbling sound and then screaming. Jamie quickly leapt out of the way, Laurel ran and managed to get into a classroom and hopefully to safety, but Jamie hissed as he remained ducked down. After all, he soon saw the source. Namely the figure that had busted through the window and was now causing chaos around the school corridor as the students and teachers ran, while some sadly had been hurt. But the figure didn't even blink.

He was tall, muscular and broad-shouldered with short tousled blonde hair and brown eyes, fair skin and a sneer, clad in simple blue clothes. He looked normal, but Jamie knew his true identity.

'Morris Bench? What is Hydroman doing here?' He wondered.

As if to answer his unspoken question, Hydroman laughed and used his arm to launch a torrent of water at a group of students.

"That's right, scream, everyone get terrified, let's hear it, send out the alert...Bring Spider-Man here, he's gonna make me rich!"

Jamie grimaced, just like Shocker, Hydroman was looking to claim the bounty by attacking innocents to lure him out, all to satisfy his greed.

'Urg, great, gotta be careful about this...He doesn't realize how close Spider-Man is thankfully…' Jamie noted. 'Worry about that issue with Sam later, for now, stop Hydroman before he hurts any of my friends, or anyone here really. Need to get to the science lab, I can change there and I stashed some of those Ice Pellets I created the last time I fought him, it's my best chance to beat him.'

Taking his chance, he slipped from his hiding place and made his way down the corridor and around the corner, now he was close, he just needed to reach the lab and get what he needed, then he could return and take the fight to Hydroman.
