The iron brand of longing.
As the sun began to rise, the Dutton ranch was already a flurry of activity. Three large trucks were lined up and ready to roll, headed towards their destination in Texas. RIP and John sat side by side in one truck, while Kayce drove another. Ray followed closely behind, pulling a horse trailer behind his truck. In less than two days, they would arrive in Texas after making a few planned stops along the way. The trucks were fully loaded with snacks and supplies for the journey ahead.
The men communicated with each other through radios, a system they had used countless times before on similar trips. Kayce had already sent a message to Elsa, the woman he was seeing back in Scotland. He wondered how her day was going and promised to talk to her or send her a text as soon as he could. He assumed she was still asleep, given the time difference, and apologized for potentially waking her up.
After reaching their first rest stop, Kayce would leave Elsa a brief voicemail, asking her to do the same for him so he could hear her voice even though she was over 1000 miles away. Despite the distance between them, their communication kept their relationship strong and connected.
As Kayce's plane took off from his family ranch in Montana, leaving behind the familiar mountains and open fields, he felt a knot forming in his stomach. He was on his way to Texas, away from his home and the life he knew. Meanwhile, 12 hours away in Washington, the love of his life was landing at the Port Angeles airport. As she stepped off the plane with her brothers, her cousin Bella spotted them and immediately started jumping and shrieking like a deranged, hyperactive animal. Standing next to her was a dark-haired man with piercing golden eyes that gave off an unsettling vibe. As Carlisle and John noticed this newcomer, they couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. Elsa, trying to maintain her composed exterior, silently questioned if this was all some kind of sick joke.
But things only got stranger when Isabella introduced the man as her boyfriend, Edward Cullen. The triplets kept their emotions and thoughts in check, but internally they were alarmed by this revelation. And now they were being told that they would have to stay with Edward's family until they found a place in Forks? It all seemed too surreal.
As they made their way to Edward's car, a sleek Volvo that stood out among the other vehicles, Jon struggled with their bags while Carlisle opened the door for Bella and then helped Elsa slide into the middle seat. She gave him a look that clearly showed her discomfort at being squished between two large men.
"This is why I never grew taller," she joked weakly.
"Don't blame us," Carlisle replied with a smirk. "Blame God for making you short."
Bella chuckled nervously at their banter, while Edward couldn't help but notice the underlying tension between them all. Little did he know, it was just the beginning of a series of strange and unsettling events that would soon unfold.
Esme's food is the best, but don't think that means we're settling down here in Forks. We have bigger plans in Montana," Bella says with a hint of sarcasm and a playful smirk on her face.
"Don't tell me you two are planning to become farmers or ranchers now? I highly doubt you know anything about that," she challenges, trying to dissuade them from their idea.
"Isabella, we may surprise you. We've had to manage cattle, sheep, ducks, and chickens back home in the Shire. We fulfilled our duties to the Crown and we can handle it here as well. Maybe with a bit of learning how Americans do things," they respond confidently.
Bella scoffs and shakes her head, unsure of how to stop their determination. They were too intelligent and capable to waste their skills on a farm. They could conquer the world if they wanted to. Edward senses their frustration at Bella's comments and knows they are more than capable of handling a farm. It's just another way for them to protect their legacy, whether it be in Scotland, England, or the States.
But their main concern right now is getting a wedding ring on their sister's finger and giving her the proper wedding she deserves. One that isn't rushed like everything else in their lives. Edward can sense the fear and panic in his brothers if they fail to marry off their sister soon. And he's relieved that Rose isn't here because she would probably fly over to England and kill whoever was responsible for this threat to their family.
The thought of what Rose went through and what could happen to their sister if they don't act fast fuels their urgency even more. Time is running out and they can't afford any delays or mistakes if they want to keep their family safe.
"What's first on the agenda once we get those two forks, guys?"
"Shower. Eat. Sleep. In whatever order we can manage," Jon replies to Isabella, his siblings nodding wearily in agreement. They are bone-tired and running purely on fumes.
"Well, here's the plan. After you've done all that." The brothers exchange a brief glance before Carlisle speaks up.
"We'll be busy acquiring as much land as possible around Yellowstone Ranch, Dutton Ranch. And once our cattle and horses are cleared, which we're betting they will be, we'll move them up and enjoy our new life."
"But why limit yourselves? With your intelligence and skills as doctors and lawyers, you could be so much more than farmers," Bella questions.
"For those who tend to their land will have an abundance of food, while those who chase illusions will have nothing," Carlisle responds with conviction.
Belle turns to him with a puzzled expression on her face.
"The Lord has commanded us to go forth and work the land, to care for it as He cares for us. Who are we to defy His word? Are you a god or goddess yourself? Do you possess more power than the Almighty? We may wear many hats, but sacrilege is not one of them. We cannot deny His command."
Bella realizes just how deeply religious her newfound family is. And she remembers the lesson her mother taught her: never challenge someone's beliefs. Still, she can't help but try to sway Carlisle's decision by appealing to his logical side.
"And yet Isabella, there are other ways to honor His command without giving up our pursuits as healers and lawyers. Surely protecting our legacy for 300 years proves that," she argues.
"We can continue working in hospitals and law offices while also tending to our land. It's what has kept our family prosperous for centuries - following the Lord's will. The land may change, but our legacy remains strong," Carlisle declares with determination.
Edwards grips the steering wheel tightly, his knuckles turning white with tension. His mind swirls with thoughts and emotions, contemplating my words. He knows them to be true - his father, his creator, a healer of the land but also a caretaker, leaving it better than he found it wherever he goes. But amidst this warmth in his heart lies a darker truth - deception. For over 300 years, their beliefs have remained unchanged, a steadfast stronghold on their minds. And now, seeing the sight of Bella that he cannot bring himself to care for only adds to his internal turmoil.
As he watches the river mirrors for any signs of Alice's impending dilemma, Elsa turns on her phone and notifications flood in. A small, sweet smile graces her lips as she reads them.
"Ohh, I see you have a message from your cowboy again. Have you told him we will be in the States?" Carlisle asks playfully.
"No," I reply, "I don't want to distract him from his work. I want to surprise him when we show up in Montana."
Jon lets out a booming laugh that could rival Emmett's. "And here I thought I was the prankster among us. Who knew you had a sister? Although I can't decide if that's nice or cruel...either way, count me in. But let's remember - if he calls me, I won't lie or hide our location."
"Same goes for me," Carlisle chimes in with a mischievous glint in his eye. "I want to see if he comes running."
Kayce's phone violently buzzed with a notification, jolting him awake. He saw it was a text from Elsa and immediately felt guilty for waking her up. She had mentioned needing rest and he knew she had been busy lately. But they were running low on gas and he needed to stop soon. He sent an apologetic text and made a mental note to call her later when she had some time.
As he drove, his mind raced with thoughts of what could be so urgent that Carlisle would need to speak with him. He had received a message from him earlier, but Kayce had brushed it off, assuming it was just another update on their plans. But now, he couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong.
The sound of Johnny Cash blaring through the truck's speakers was interrupted by another notification, this one from Carlisle himself. The message read: "We need to talk ASAP. Text me or leave a voicemail when you're available." Kayce's heart began to race as he tried to make sense of the urgency in the message.
As they pulled into the gas station, Kayce's hands trembled as he filled up the tanks and grabbed snacks for the road. He knew he needed to make the call, but his nerves got the best of him. After driving for another 20 miles, he couldn't take it anymore and pulled over to make the call.
His heart pounding in his chest, Kayce dialed Carlisle's number and waited anxiously as it rang. A few moments later, a tired male voice answered on the other end. "Hello?" It was Carlisle.
Kayce's palms were sweaty as he struggled to find the right words to ask about the urgent message. He couldn't understand why he was so nervous around Carlisle - they had always had a good relationship. But something about this situation made his stomach turn.
Taking a deep breath, he finally spoke. "Hey, Carlisle. It's Kayce. You messaged me earlier...is everything okay?" There was a tense silence on the other end before Carlisle finally responded with a heavy sigh. "No, it's not. We need to talk." And with those words, Kayce knew that his life was about to change in ways he couldn't even imagine.
"Kayce, are you in love with my sister, Elsa?" Carlisle demanded, his voice laced with suspicion and barely contained anger.
Kayce stumbled over his words, caught off guard by the question. But then he spoke with a fierce determination that surprised even himself. "I love her. She's my everything. I would do anything for her."
He went on to explain how he had gone to great lengths to prepare for their future together, including getting an engagement ring and wedding band made just for her. His love for Elsa burned within him, consuming all thoughts and actions.
Carlisle let out a sigh of relief, realizing that Kayce was truly serious about his intentions towards Elsa.
But then he continued, his tone turning dark and intense. "You know what makes me different from other men? I am not bound by morals or rules. I will do whatever it takes to protect and keep Elsa happy. I will burn the world to ashes if that's what it takes."
Carlisle's expression shifted from relief to concern as he listened to Kayce's words. He tried to reason with him, reminding him of the importance of morality and sacrifice.
But Kayce was adamant. He would do whatever it takes to protect Elsa and their family, even if it meant sacrificing everything else. That was the code they lived by, the legacy they carried on.
And if anyone were to threaten their happiness or safety, Kayce would gladly become the villain in order to ensure their survival. That is how deeply his love for Elsa ran.
In the end, Carlisle could only nod in understanding and acceptance, knowing that Kayce was the man who would always put Elsa first above all else.
"Everything on the right, Sir."
"Carlisle, I don't know what to say. But I will do whatever it takes to have her in my arms every day. She's the only one for me, the only one who could be the mother of my children and walk by my side on the path of life."
"Kayce, that's all I need to hear. You have my blessing, but you better hurry up and ask before someone else snatches her away. And just so you know, she's gonna be irritated if you don't ask soon."
Kayce sat in shock, not sure how much time had passed until his father knocked on his window. He rolled it down to see his father's concerned face.
"What's wrong, son?"
"I think I was just given Elsa's hand in marriage. Her brother gave me his blessing."
"Isn't that what you wanted? Why are you hesitating?"
"Dad, I haven't even asked for her hand yet and now everyone knows. Talking to her brother, he sounded emotionally exhausted and burdened."
John patted Kayce's shoulder and nodded understandingly.
"Well, do you still want her? Or are you second guessing yourself?"
Kayce didn't hesitate.
"No doubt about it, Dad. She is the one for me. If she isn't going to be my wife, then the line ends with me."
"Then don't let this opportunity slip away. Let's hit the road."
As they drove off, John could see the determination in his son's eyes and knew that nothing could stand in his way of claiming Elsa as his own.
"Yeah, RIP. Looks like I'm gonna have a new daughter-in-law soon. Kayce's still reeling from the news."
"Is that a good thing, Sir?"
The convoy speeds down the road.
"I believe so. Although I think Kayce was caught off guard. Maybe they always had a feeling he would propose and they jumped the gun."
"I don't know, Sir. But if it were my sister and danger was coming, I'd do everything in my power to get her out safely before jumping into the midst of it."
"Do you think trouble's coming for her?"
"Sir, your daughter Beth looked up Elsa. Sir, that girl is something else. She's only 18 and she's already a doctor, lawyer, veterinarian, soldier, and a Princess. And they have their own version of a ranch on top of all that - horses, cattle, sheep, ducks, chickens - it's a breathtaking land. No wonder they want to protect it. But while Beth was digging, she found out about a neighboring Lord who has had ten mysteriously dead wives. The rumors say he killed them all."
"RIP. What are the chances he has his sights set on Elsa?"
"Sir, as sure as the sun will rise tomorrow."
John pauses to consider this information and realizes what Elsa's brothers are trying to do - keep her safe. They have no choice but to act.
"They're trying to make her unavailable to him. How old is this Lord?"
"Sir, he's old enough to be Elsa's grandfather, if not great-grandfather."
"Does he have any other sons?"
"No sir, he has no children. His wives never lived long enough to bear children or were pregnant at the time of their death."
John looks out the window with a heavy heart - there is little they can do besides wait.
"Well, all we can do now is wait and be ready for trouble if it comes. But she will be family, and we protect our own. Her brothers will be family too."
"Sir, I have to warn you. Your daughter Beth has a crazy idea to have Lily get close to one of the brothers."
"Let me get this straight. RIP, Beth wants to give up Lily to one of the brothers in exchange for their sister? To secure our rights?"
"Yes, Sir. She's willing to go through with it. Political marriages may not be common here, but they grew up in a society where it was expected. And Lily will turn 18 soon, so you could sign off on the marriage. Plus, she's already an RN and doesn't plan on doing anything else."
"And Lily would most likely end up being a cowboy or rancher's wife. We have few good cowboys around here, but not many good ranchers. Beth's idea might actually work. At least I know my daughters will be well taken care of. Though I don't like the thought of her going so far away." John falls silent, his mind racing with thoughts of his daughters' safety and future.
The Dutton convoy made their way through the dark, desolate roads of Guthrie, Texas in the early hours of the morning. As they pulled into their hotel rooms that John had prepared for them, he spoke to his sons with a sense of urgency.
"Get some rest boys. We have a big day tomorrow at the 6666 ranch to look at show horses."
Rip couldn't help but ask, "Sir, why didn't Travis just come to us like he normally does?"
"Well Rip," John replied, "Travis said he won't be able to travel or attend shows for at least six months. He has something down here that needs his full attention. I told him it's not a problem and I can understand. This is one of the few times he can't just come to us. Let's treat this as a mini vacation from the ranch."
Rip laughed at the look on Kayce's face and grabbed his room key before heading off to get some sleep. Around 10 in the morning, Kayce woke up and showered off the weariness from the road. He saw missed calls from his dad and a text from Carlisle asking about available ranches around Yellowstone.
Kayce quickly sent a text to Beth, asking if there were any ranches for sale near their own. After getting dressed, he called his father back and was relieved when he answered after only a few rings.
"Hey son, nice to see you're rejoining the living," John joked.
"I went straight to sleep after sending that text to Elsa last night," Kayce replied with a tired laugh. "So what's up?"
"How about the three of us go find lunch and then talk about our plans for today?" John suggested.
"Sounds good, I'll meet you downstairs."
"Yeah, see you there son."
Before heading down to meet his father, Kayce sent off another text to Carlisle, letting him know he had asked Beth about available ranches and offering to give her his cell phone number so they could discuss it further.
As Kayce and Rip waited for the elevator, Rip asked, "Have you talked to your girl lately, Kayce?"
Kayce looked at him from the corner of his eye. "We texted a little this morning. Elsa's brother Carlisle texted me asking about ranches for sale near Yellowstone. So I gave him Beth's number and they can talk more about it."
"Did Carlisle mention why he wanted to know?" Rip pressed.
"No, but Carlisle is very methodical in his thinking. He won't say anything until he has a plan in place. He'll ask questions and come up with ideas before revealing his intentions. I just have to give him a few days and he'll tell me what he's thinking or Else or Jon will," Kayce explained.
Just as they reached the first floor, Rip stopped Kayce for a moment. "You don't think Carlisle is trying to make a play on the ranch, do you?"
Kayce couldn't help but shake his head and laugh at Rip's paranoia, but he couldn't blame him for thinking that way.
"No, Carlisle isn't the type to pull something like that. If he wanted to do something with the ranch, he would tell us directly. My guess is he's thinking of giving it to Else and myself as a wedding gift or something," Kayce reassured.
Feeling slightly relieved, Kayce made his way over to where his father was waiting by the doors. As they headed out for lunch, Rip's doubts still lingered in the back of Kayce's mind, but he trusted Carlisle.
(Back at Yellowstone Ranch)
Beth saw Kayce's text about giving her Carlisle's number and pulled up all available land for sale around Yellowstone. She couldn't understand why Carlisle would be interested in buying land near their ranch.
After a few rings, a deep male voice answered. "This is Carlisle."
"Good morning, I'm Elizabeth, but please call me Beth. My brother Kayce texted me this morning about you asking about land near Yellowstone. I can help with that, I just need to know why you're interested in buying land," Beth explained.
"Well Miss Beth, the reason I'm looking for land is because we are moving our shires from Scotland to America. From my understanding, a shire is the same as a ranch," Carlisle replied.
Beth's heart almost stopped at his words. "You're moving your entire ranch here? But why? I thought Kayce said it's been in your family for generations."
Carlisle's laughter was laced with bitterness as Beth spoke. "We were given two choices," he sneered. "Protect our land and our family's legacy by sacrificing my sister to a man old enough to be her great-grandfather, who has killed ten wives already. Or leave the country." Beth was stunned by his revelation and newfound respect flooded through her for his family. She urged him to take her sister or brother as a wife instead. "Fine, let's find something just as good as Yellowstone Ranch," she muttered, determined to fulfill their desires. "How big of a land are you looking at?" Carlisle's voice turned cold and calculating. "Big enough for us to breathe, and more. We raise cattle, sheep, ducks, chickens, pigs - we need room for all of them and then some." He explained their plans while Beth frantically searched for potential properties that would suit their needs. Suddenly, Carlisle's voice changed, a chill creeping into his tone. "Is there any housing development nearby? I want to stop such things from encroaching on our farmland." A sinister edge laced his words as he added, "If necessary, I'll use any means to protect what is rightfully ours." Beth shivered with excitement and fear as she realized the depth of his determination and power. Before hanging up, Carlisle instructed her to send him all information on a certain land developer named Danny, including properties owned and potential targets. "Keep an eye on the news," he ordered in a low voice, sending chills down Beth's spine. "I want it within the hour." As she complied with his demands, she couldn't help but wonder how Carlisle knew how to manipulate powerful figures like Bill Gates and Elon Musk. But before she could dwell on it further, she heard him barking orders at Elsa to go ruin someone's day. The thrill in his voice was palpable, and Beth couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and fear for the events that were about to unfold.
(Back in Texas.)
Kayce's heart pounds in his chest as he returns to his hotel room for a peaceful evening. But as soon as he turns on the news, his world is shattered. The billionaire Danny Huston, a man Kayce has always despised, has been indicted on numerous charges including possessing child * found at his premises and committing tax evasion. But even more disturbing, there are rumors that he may be involved in a sex trafficking ring.
Before Kayce can even process this shocking news, his phone rings. He sees it's his sister Beth calling and answers with trembling hands.
"Are you watching the news?"
"What's going on?" Beth asks urgently.
Kayce takes a deep breath before responding, "They found evidence of child * at Danny's place. And apparently he's linked to a sex trafficking ring."
Beth lets out a nervous laugh over the phone. "Could your girlfriend Elsa have something to do with this?"
Kayce shakes his head, knowing that Beth can't see him. "Yeah, she's capable of it. I've seen her destroy people before. She could probably take down someone like Danny without breaking a sweat."
"Carlisle Cullen might have set her loose on him," Beth reveals. "He wanted to buy land around here but didn't like the idea of Danny destroying it with harmful chemicals. I may have mentioned that to Elsa and now Carlisle is buying up all of Danny's property."
Kayce can't help but feel a sense of satisfaction at the thought of the whole family moving away from Scotland.
"That's my girl," he says proudly. "Elsa doesn't mess around when she wants to take someone down."
"But what about when she wants to play?" Beth asks nervously.
A dark chuckle escapes Kayce's lips. "Trust me, big sister, you don't want to know. But if you're ever looking for a partner in crime, Elsa is your girl. Just be prepared to follow her lead."
Beth falls silent for a moment before speaking again. "She's already taken down Danny. His stocks have plummeted and all of his assets have been seized by the feds. And somehow, the family managed to buy up all of his land and get their money back. I've never seen Jamie so freaked out. The governor is worried they're setting their sights on Montana next."
"Beth, I told you they were politically connected. Where you wanna believe me or not, that's on you. But yeah, I've seen them do stuff like this before. Actually a whole lot worse. They want something they they try to play fair, but if you tick them off they just go for the kill or they play. But for some reason she just went for the kill so. Yeah, by morning I'm expecting he was gonna be dead."
Frantic banging was happening on His hotel room door. Kayce Barely opens the door and his dad burst in, falling behind with RIP.
"Son, did you hear what happened on the news? I knew that guy was an asshole A sick one at that."
John says ecstatically. RIP is pacing the room nervously. And finally asked.
"Kayce Bev just texted me frantically thinking the Collins did something. What
"Beth, I warned you about their connections. Whether you choose to believe me or not is up to you. But mark my words, I've seen them pull off things like this before. And it was a whole lot worse. They may seem fair and just when they want something, but if you cross them, they will go for the kill without hesitation. And that's exactly what happened here. By morning, I wouldn't be surprised if he's dead."
Suddenly, frantic banging echoes through the hotel room door where Kayce and his father John are discussing the situation at hand. With trembling hands, Kayce slowly opens the door to reveal his father bursting in, followed closely by RIP.
"Son, did you hear the news? That guy was an asshole, a sick one at that," John exclaims jubilantly. Meanwhile, RIP paces back and forth nervously.
Confusion and concern cloud Kayce's face as he tries to process the sudden turn of events. His father's statement only adds to his shock and disbelief.
But then RIP speaks up with urgency in his voice. "Kayce, Beth just texted me frantically. She thinks the Cullen's were involved in this. What the hell is going on? Did they do this?"
With a heavy sigh, Kayce responds with a hint of resignation in his voice, "It's possible. They never liked Landon or any land developer for that matter. Especially those who poison the land they're trying to protect."
John's pacing intensifies as he looks directly at his son with a mix of shock and fear in his eyes. The gravity of the situation finally sinking in for both of them.
The atmosphere in the room becomes charged with tension as John paces back and forth, his eyes wild with shock and fear. Kayce stares at his father, his expression cold and unyielding. RIP trembles in front of them, knowing that he has angered a powerful force. Suddenly, Kayce's voice changes, becoming dark and menacing.
"Don't you understand? They don't play games. Their only goal is to protect the land and anyone who threatens it will pay the price. And if they go after the ranch, do you really think we can stand against them?"
John's realization hits him like a ton of bricks as he looks at his son, seeing him in a new light. He knows now that Elsa, Kayce's wife, is a powerful player in this game.
"You're worried about the wrong deal. By morning Danny will be dead," Kayce says calmly but with an underlying threat. "Now get out of my room so I can make some phone calls."
RIP hesitates but eventually leaves the room, sensing the danger that surrounds him. Rip turns to Kayce with a steely determination.
"Make sure your girl knows the Yellowstone Ranch is not for sale," John nods in understanding.
"Don't underestimate Elsa or Beth," Kayce warns him. "They both have bite, and they won't hesitate to use it if needed." The thought of facing either woman in their true form sends shivers down John's spine.
"Just because they haven't bitten you before doesn't mean they won't," Kayce continues, his tone turning from warning to challenge. "And trust me, I'll gladly watch as they take you down."
John realizes that he's involved himself in something much bigger than he ever imagined, and he knows there's no turning back now. He can only hope to survive the wrath of these fierce protectors of the land.
Kayce frantically made calls to find out what was going on. His first call was to Elsa, but she answered after two rings.
"Hey cowboy, how's it going?" she said sweetly.
"Angel, it's been forever since I heard your voice. Don't let me go this long without hearing it," Kayce replied urgently.
"Sorry cowboy, I knew you were busy in Texas so I didn't want to disturb you. What are you guys doing there?"
"We're hunting for a new stallion. Our old one died a couple of weeks ago."
"Oh no, I'm so sorry. What happened to him?"
"Denny's. He killed our horse and contaminated our fields with clover. We lost a lot of cattle because of it."
"Well now I feel worse," Elsa said guiltily.
Kayce gave a light chuckle. "Why is that Angel?"
"I didn't just make his day worse, I made him have a bad day altogether. That was my mistake."
Kayce couldn't help but laugh loudly. "I knew it was you. Angel, I think you gave him more than just a bad day. You guys operate differently and he won't last until morning."
Elsa giggled sweetly. "Oh please, I'm better than that. He won't even survive past 8 PM. Do you really think I would let him live that long? The maids couldn't even find him on the toilet!"
Kayce was impressed with her cunning idea and cared for Danny less and less.
"If it makes you feel any better, being found on the toilet is pretty humiliating," he joked.
After chatting for a bit longer, Elsa finally let Kayce go, reminding him that he needed rest if he wanted to wake up early for the search for a new stallion. His next call was to Carlisle, trying to figure out why he sent Elsa after Danny.
"Hey man, how are you doing?" Kayce asked, getting straight to the point.
"What the hell did Danny do to set you guys off? I know he ticked me off, but I didn't see what would put him on your hit list," he questioned sternly.
Carlisle laughed in amusement. "I was in a bad mood and wanted to make someone else's day worse. I figured Elsa could use some target practice before she rips someone's head off."
Kayce nervously chuckled, knowing firsthand how scary Elsa's anger could be. "I don't blame you for that one. Her anger scares me too. So what's the deal with buying all the land in Montana?"
"Your sister Beth told you, didn't she? That we're moving from Scotland to the States. So now, cowboy, it's your job to teach us how to be real Cowboys."
Kayce let out a dark chuckle at the thought. Teaching them how to be cowboys would be harder than dealing with Jimmy.
"I think I can handle that. When are you all making the big move? I could take you to some cow auctions and Travis always has good horses if you're interested. Some of them are even show-worthy. But our definition of show horses might be different from yours."
Another chuckle came through the phone from the other end.
"You'll be surprised at what kind of show horses we have. Elsa mentioned you guys were going to Texas. What for?"
"We're headed to the Four Sixes Ranch to look for a new stallion. Our old one was killed by Danny a couple weeks ago along with most of our cattle."
"Don't tell Elsa, she'll feel bad that she didn't do worse."
Kayce let out a loud laugh.
"You're a bit late for that one, buddy. I already broke the news."
This time it was Carlisle Cullen who laughed over the phone.
"Well, looks like I'll have to find Elsa a new project to make somebody's day miserable. Any ideas?"
"Other than my brother Jamie, not really. But Jamie is small fry compared to what Elsa's used to dealing with. Plus, if Elsa started messing with him, Beth would probably join in and things could get messy. And besides, both our sisters will be competing in the same events and I don't want them trying to one-up each other. Who else could we target to make their day worse? As entertaining as it would be to watch Jamie suffer, he'd just get caught in the crossfire. Let's avoid that headache."
"Kayce, you're probably right. We don't need those two girls fighting each other. But I do want to see him suffer a little. Maybe Jon can have some fun with him."
Kayce choked on his drink at the mention of Jon's name.
"Carlisle Cullen, I thought you were supposed to come up with a solution, not add another problem to the mix. Jon can be vicious when he wants to be. He doesn't take kindly to cowards and my brother is definitely a coward. Let's stop with the jokes so I can put my dad at ease. Are you three planning on making a move for the ranch?"
"Why do you think we need to make a play for your ranch? Are you implying that we will have to fight for it or is this some kind of warning?" Carlisle's voice dripped with shock and disbelief as he spoke over the phone.
"No, I don't expect you to resort to underhanded tactics. You're not the type to play dirty games. You are straightforward and make your intentions clear, or move on. But after seeing what happened with Danny and how Beth helped you acquire land at a steal, everyone is feeling on edge. They don't know you three like I do. It will take time for trust to build between us. My father is not used to being out of the loop in controlling this valley and having someone more politically connected and powerful than him coming in scares him." The tension was thick in Kayce's voice as he explained the situation.
"I apologize for not keeping you in the loop about our plans. We will sit down and discuss everything face to face when I see you next. Right now, we are hitting the ground running and can't afford to slow down. You are a crucial part of our plans and we need to talk. I want your father there too so there are no misunderstandings. There may be some unexpected challenges coming our way that we were not prepared for, but please be patient and wait for us to fill you in."
"I understand, man. You've always been calculated and keep things close to the chest until you have all the information. I trust you, but just be careful." Carlisle's frustration was palpable through the phone as he spoke.
As they hung up, both men knew that their peaceful partnership was about to be tested like never before. The fire had been lit and there was no going back now.
"We're constantly on the move, no time to rest or even think. This wasn't part of my plan. I had contingency plans in place but this threw me for a loop. Thankfully those plans paid off and things are going relatively smoothly with minimal hiccups. But I know more curveballs will come our way. I apologize for that."
Kayce nodded, determination etched on his face.
"Just tell me where and when to pick you up. I'll be there."
"Thanks man, I appreciate it. Now get some rest, Elsa told me you have an early day tomorrow."
Kayce couldn't help but smile at the thought of Elsa worrying about his sleep. After they said their goodbyes, Kayce plugged in his phone and tried to get some rest. But his dreams were consumed with thoughts of Elsa and their uncertain future. When his alarm went off at 8:00am, he felt like he had just closed his eyes. But there was no time to waste. He quickly showered, ordered room service, and got ready to meet his dad, John, and RIP in the lobby by 9:00am. The morning flew by and before he knew it, it was time to head out for another day of uncertainty and danger.
Kayce's heart stopped as he collided with his father at the elevator doors. The three of them stepped into the empty compartment, and Kayce could feel the tension in the air like a weighted net dragging him down. His father spoke in a hushed voice.
"I spoke to Carlisle last night. He's not going after the ranch," John said, but his words were laced with fear and apprehension.
"Carlisle, Cullen, Jon, and Elsa are some of the best lawyers out there. They dug up some dirt on Danny and put a stop to his plans for the ranch. But they also found something else. Something that has me worried," John continued, his eyes darting towards Kayce.
"What do you mean?" Kayce asked, feeling a knot form in his stomach.
"They found skeletons in our closet. Things we thought were buried deep enough. And now I'm not sure if I can trust them," John said, his voice trembling with emotion.
"But they're on our side, Dad. They helped us with Danny," Kayce argued, trying to reassure himself as much as his father.
"That's true, son. But what happens if they turn against us? What if they use our secrets against us?" John's face was etched with worry.
"They won't do that. They have too much integrity," Kayce insisted, but even to him, it sounded hollow.
"You don't understand, son. These people are not just geniuses in law and politics. They're geniuses in everything. Imagine what they could do if they turned their intellect towards destroying us." John's words hung heavily in the air.
"But we need them, Dad. We need their help to protect the ranch," Kayce pleaded.
"I know that, son. I know." John looked at his son with a mixture of love and fear. "But we have to be careful. We have to watch our backs, because with these people, you never know when they'll turn against you." The elevator doors opened, and the two men stepped out onto the ground floor, both filled with a sense of unease and uncertainty about their future with the powerful Carlisle family.
"Kayce, they're not just your brothers in arms. They're your blood, tied to you by a bond forged in the flames of war. They know you better than any of us ever will, because they fought and bled alongside you. They were willing to die for you. And yes, I'll admit I was thrilled when I heard you were going back, ready to finally marry Beth. And the thought of what she could bring into our family excited me, still does. But what I didn't fully understand then, and even now, is the sheer political power these men wield and how quickly they can use it. It shocked me more than anything else in this world. And the speed at which they stake their claim to victory...it scares me, Kayce. Makes me wonder what else they're capable of. Beth wants Lily to marry one of them - Carlisle Cullen or Jon Cullen - uniting both families through two marriages. And the fact that you, my own son, are considered one of these brothers brings me some comfort. Knowing they will protect their own no matter what, and that they have the means to provide for their loved ones...well, yesterday's events only solidify that belief for me. But I'm still trying to wrap my head around all of this. See, I'm used to being the big fish in a small pond. Not realizing just how small I am in this grand ocean we call life."
"I get it, Dad. When I first met them and saw what they're capable of...I was used to being the kingpin, not realizing I was just a pawn in their game. But now I see it differently. These people aren't just protecting their land; they're protecting something much more precious - their legacy, their family name. The Sun has made powerful friends and allies who will surely come to our aid if needed."
"Of course, I know they have also made some enemies along the way. But from what I've seen, they always act in the best interest of others. In the unit, I saw it firsthand. They were never afraid to make tough decisions for the greater good, even if it meant sacrificing an ally. And that's something I can respect."
"Enough talk. Let's go check out some stallions."
The group piled into their trucks and headed off to the Four Sixes Ranch, a short 20 minute drive outside of town.
As they approached the ranch, they could see cattle grazing in the fields. Travis liked to showcase his prized cows for visitors, but he kept his most prized possessions closer to the barn. As they pulled up to the corral, Naughty noticed some unfamiliar horses in the pasture.
"Wow, looks like you've got quite the collection here. Mustangs, Clydesdales, Broncos...I can't even name half of these breeds."
"That's because some of them are extremely rare and expensive. I'm just grateful to be able to see them in person. Maybe I can convince Travis to let me get a closer look at them. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
RIP's eyes locked onto the majestic horses, his heart pounding with excitement. He couldn't believe he was seeing them in person.
"Sir, how much does one of those beauties cost?"
John Dutton's face remained stoic as he answered, "On the low side, 20 million. But most of the time, they can go for a billion."
RIP's jaw dropped in shock. He had never imagined anything could be that expensive. And yet here they were, casually grazing as if worth millions was just another day for them.
"Holy fucking shit, where did he get that kind of money?"
Travis appeared from the barns, blocking orders like a true cowboy. When he saw John Dutton and his crew, he walked over with a friendly smile.
"Hey guys, how you doing?"
As Travis made small talk, RIP couldn't help but ask about the horses grazing in the pasture.
"Travis, when did you get those types of horses down there?"
Travis chuckled and replied, "Ohh, those aren't mine. They belong to some very wealthy folks who are paying us big bucks to take care of them. You can get a closer look when they come up for their meals soon. We have even more impressive ones in the barn. Come on, I'll show you."
As they walked through the stables, Kayce Tracey's eyes darted around with a sense of unease. He couldn't shake off the feeling that something wasn't right. And then he saw it - an iron brand mark on the back of a cow that looked all too familiar to him.
His heart thudded in his chest as he asked Travis about the strange mix of animals housed in the stables. But when Travis mentioned housing livestock for a "lucrative deal," Kayce knew something was off. His suspicions were confirmed when he noticed a Viking compass branded on one of the cows. That was their symbol, and only one family used it - the Cullens.
Kayce's mind raced with questions, demanding answers from Travis in a cold tone that no one had ever heard him use before. But Travis was taken aback and could only explain that the Cullens were visiting family in Forks and had made arrangements for their livestock to be cared for by someone they trusted - himself.
But Kayce couldn't shake off the feeling that something nefarious was going on. Without a word, he took off running towards his truck, leaving everyone else in confusion. John Dunnan yelled for him and RIP followed closely behind, but Kayce was already gone - driven by a primal instinct to protect his loved ones.
John and Travis caught up moments later, both confused as to why Kayce had reacted so strongly over an iron branding. RIP could only shrug, equally baffled by Kayce's sudden urgency. But deep down, they all knew it had something to do with Elsa and the Cullens - and that meant trouble.
"I couldn't get to him, Sir. The truck was already speeding away before I could even react. He wouldn't stop for anything. Could it be because of Elsa? Has something happened to her?"
"The Scottish chick, right?" Travis asked, his voice laced with confusion.
"We're not entirely sure. He didn't stop there. We'll keep you updated. In the meantime, why don't you show us the horses you think will work?"
"Of course, of course. It's a shame he ran off. Elsa specifically told me to have Aries ready for him. She thought he would like him."
John Dunn looked at Travis with wide eyes, intrigued and curious.
"Who is Aries?"
"Ohh, he's a magnificent Mustang stallion. Completely black with a shimmering coat in the sun, almost like black flames flowing from his mane and tail. A truly beautiful horse, though he can be quite temperamental. But I believe Kayce can handle him."
"Why did Elsa want him ready for Kayce?"
Travis let out a nervous laugh and shot a jealous glance towards John.
"Lucky bastard gets everything," he muttered. "Elsa said to make sure Aries was ready for transport."
John's face showed surprise as he spoke, his tone reflecting it.
"She's giving him a horse? This Elsa chick is giving him a horse?"
"Yeah, do you want to come see him? I'm thoroughly jealous." Travis replied.
John was shocked but also eager to see this horse. He followed Travis to the large horse barns adorned with the Cullen sign indicating these were all Cullen's horses. Travis led them to a stall where a magnificent black Mustang stallion was happily munching on grain.
"Sir Kayce, your son is so lucky. I am jealous. No, I am consumed with envy." John Dutton reached out his hand to beckon the stallion, who obediently trotted over and nuzzled his nose against John's palm.
"My God, you're a magnificent creature, aren't you? So well taken care of." John spoke to the horse through gritted teeth, seething with jealousy.
"So what kind of training will be needed for him?"
"Well, not much. He's one hell of a shore horse and a workhorse too. Does a lot of the same tasks as our Marshall horses."
"Is he wild?"
"RIP. He's a Mustang. A bit of wildness in him, but otherwise very well-behaved. Just picky about who he'll allow near him. I'm one of the few trusted caretakers."
Travis continued to boast about Aries and all his wonderful qualities. He was sure that if they asked Elsa or her siblings, they could confirm everything he was saying.
As they walked around, Travis showed him more of his prized stallions and they settled on another chestnut beauty named Call Copper.
Meanwhile, Kayce hurried back to the hotel to gather his belongings. He tried calling Elsa or her brothers multiple times but only reached voicemail.
Once he left the hotel, he set his GPS for Forks, WA and sped down the road. Just as he started driving, his phone rang with an urgent call from his father.
"Kayce, are you okay? What's going on? You just bolted out of here."
"Dad, I have to make sure she's okay."
"Son, you need to explain why you think Elsa is in trouble."
"They sent their entire herd of 600 horses and other livestock - cattle, chickens, pigs - to the Four Sixes Ranch."
"Yes, that's standard quarantine protocol. You know this. They have to be quarantined for at least three months and pass multiple tests before they can be released. But..." His father trailed off with a heavy sigh.
Kayce's heart sank as he realized the implications. Elsa and her family were stuck in an unfamiliar place with no clear end in sight. He knew he had to get to them as soon as possible to ensure their well-being.
"Dad, I need to find Elsa. The Cullens never leave the Shire in Scotland unless something is seriously wrong. It's like us leaving our family ranch. They wouldn't say anything. I think they're planning something and I wasn't given any information."
John and Donna let out a frustrated sigh as they listened to their son Kayce's determined voice over the phone. But Kayce was not about to give up.
"Son, now is not the time for you to go off on your own."
Kayce responded with anger and frustration.
"What if this was Mom, Dad? Before you two got married. What would you do? Would you sit around doing nothing or would you take action to find out what's going on?"
Frustrated, John sighed, knowing he couldn't talk his son out of this.
"Fine, Kayce, go find out. But I think you're overreacting and jumping the gun, don't you?"
Kayce didn't answer before ending the call. In many ways, he took after his mother more than his father. RIP looked at John curiously from the driver's seat as they raced down the road to figure out what was happening.
"Sir, did you reach Kayce?"
"Yes, RIP. He's rushing off to Washington, running into God knows what without a plan. Not wanting to listen to me."
"Well, Sir, he's in love."
"I know that, but I wish he would just listen and wait instead of acting impulsively. Maybe they don't need him yet or maybe they're keeping him out of it for a reason."
"Well, Sir, he is your son."
"He's more like his mother's side of the family. They always behave like this. There's something predatory and possessive about them. His mother was the same way."
"Sir, you can also be predatory and possessive when it comes to protecting your family. Perhaps they're just more honest about it."
