Finally, with a flash of light and a burst of dust, Jay stumbled into the other tunnel. The glowing rocks dimly illuminated the broken earpiece lying abandoned on the ground. Jay then carefully jogged down the tunnel, hoping he'd be able to catch Morro by surprise. He gripped the aeroblade, his only effective weapon, tightly as he breathed steadily, trying to formulate a plan. Suddenly, his thoughts were interrupted by a gut-wrenching scream. No, no, no, no, no. Jay rushed off down the tunnel, all thoughts of sneakiness gone. Lightning branched around him as he ran faster and faster, feet pounding on the ground, drowned out by Nya's screams. As he ran, he saw signs of their fighting: a section of the tunnel soaked, a pile of broken debris littered around, and even Nya's bloodied and wet robe sitting in a clump on the ground. When Nya's screams had stopped, Jay slowed down, now able to hear Morro's voice echoing down the tunnel. His green shine mixed with the blue of the glowing rocks.
Carefully, Jay rounded the corner, pulling on his mask, his heightened senses picking up the sound of rushing water and swirling wind and the smell of blood and sweat. The first Jay saw was Nya, floating above the chasm in a swirling vortex, her naked torso soaked in blood, her arms limp, her mouth parted in shallow breaths. She revolved slowly, hair swirled around her face.
"…to search for your body, to hope that you could still be alive," Morro was saying. Jay approached from behind. Now he understood why Lloyd always emphasised being able to sneak in their training. He planted his sneakers carefully on the stone floor, breathing quietly through his mask. But as he neared, he figured there was no way he could beat Morro. If Nya couldn't, even with the adornment, Jay's lighting powers were useless. But, in the back of his mind, a desperate and vague plan began to form.
"…then, when they are mourning and broken, I will kill them."
When Jay was a few feet behind Morro, with the words only just left his mouth, Jay said "Put her down, Morro,", levelling the aeroblade at his back.
Jay noticed the sharp intake of breath. He was surprised! But as soon as it had happened, Morro had composed himself, a smile on his face. He revolved slowly to face Jay and the aeorblade.
"Do you have the adornment?" He asked, oddly calm and polite.
"You think I'd be stupid enough to bring it straight to you?" Jay snarled. "You'll never find it now, those ghosts you sent were too late,"
"Then you have no power here," Morro grinned. "If you kill me, your friend will fall to her death. So, put the aeroblade down, and I will spare her."
Morro laughed as Jay set the razorblades on the ground. "You love her too much, ninja. At least now you will die with her," and with a sweep of his arm, Jay was wrenched off his feet with a blast of wind, the aeroblade clattering into the abyss, landing with a quiet splash at the bottom. Jay was swept into the vortex, back to back with Nya. Stay calm. Stay calm. Nothing had gone wrong yet. Jay could feel Nya's slight frame shift with every ragged, wheezing breath. She was facing away from Morro as they slowly revolved to the right. Jay imagined a clock: Morro would be twelve o'clock, and when Jay was facing six o'clock, Nya would be facing Morro.
"Well, at least you two can die together," Morro smirked.
"Wait, wait, wait!" Jay cried as he pulled off his mask. "Don't you want to know where the necklace is?" He needed to buy time. One o'clock.
"I didn't think you'd tell me," Morro said, confident and relaxed. "I was just going to attack your little flying ship and take it from your friends,"
"I'll tell you, but I want you to answer my question first." Two o'clock. Jay fixed his eyes on Morro as his hand closed around Nya's limp fingers. We can do this.
"Well, ask away,"
"Why do you even want the adornments? You're already powerful enough, why collect all three?"
"Ah, how short-sighted you ninja are." Morro seemed to relish the conversation, liking the opportunity to taunt the ninja. "The coalescence is coming! All the old scrolls say so, and yet Master Wu has not even begun to prepare. But I have." Three o'clock.
As Morro spoke, Jay reached up, lifting the chain from around his neck, his angle shielding it from Morro's view. Carefully, with the pendant clasped tightly, he lowered his hand to Nya's, pressing the pendant firmly into her palm. Four o'clock.
"While the world is in turmoil, I will have all the power! With all three adornments, I will be safe from the chaos. My powers will protect me, and the opportunities after the coalescence will be unlimited," Five o'clock. Jay watched the dark stone tunnels turn as he revolved on the spot. He marvelled at how large this ravine was, how high the rock ceiling was and how far down in the chasm the water was. Jay felt a slight shift and heard the quiet grunt as Nya quickly lifted the necklace around her neck. A rush of relief came over Jay as he heard Nya's sigh of pleasure when her wounds were healed by the adornment. "From the chaos of the new world, I will rise above it all!" Six o'clock.
Jay could only imagine the look on Morro's face when he would have seen the necklace sitting on Nya's chest as she turned to face him. Morro's guard was down; he wasn't ready. A sudden wave of water rocketed from the bottom of the chasm with a mighty roar and crashed into Morro, vaporising him instantly. Euphoria rushed through Jay, but the moment Morro disappeared, the funnel of wind that kept them up vanished. Down, down, down Jay went to the water that, at this height, would surely kill him. The wind rushed by his face, but he could trust Nya. From the corner of his eyes, he saw Nya, her eyes glowing bright, fling her hands out, making more water come up to greet him, surrounding Jay gently and keeping him in a safe bubble of air as they crashed into the ravine.
