The Elmore Community Center stage was a chaotic symphony of nerves and questionable talent. Tonight was the night of 'Elmore's Got Talent'! And the air crackled with a mix of anticipation and the faint smell of nervous sweat, mostly comes from the contestants. At the backstage, amidst a throng of sequined outfits and nervously practiced routines, there was Nicole Watterson, a sleek, female blue cat with a glint of determination in her bright eyes, was adjusting her gi. Beside her was her husband, Richard Watterson, a pink bunny of considerable girth, was attempting to zip his jumpsuit on his overweight body, a task that seemed to defy the very laws of physics.
Nicole: "Richard, are you sure you're ready for this?"
Nicole asked, her voice a low purr infused with a hint of exasperation. She admired his spirit of joining with her on this event, but his dedication to the art of sleeping and eating at home often clashed with her meticulous planning. This is one of the rare times that they both participates in competitions like this. But this time, they have a good reason to it, as the winner will win a large amount of prize money along with 5 plane tickets to travel to Hawaii. Just enough for a family of 5 members like them. Nicole was willing to win this, but not without a precise and well-rehearsed plan.
Richard looked at his wife as he grunted, his face an alarming shade of red.
Richard: "Ready as I'll ever be, honey!"
He then patted his substantial belly, causing a small tremor in the nearby dressing room.
Richard: "Although, I think my pants might be rejecting me. Maybe if I remove a few... layers?"
Nicole: "No, Richard! Those 'layers' are your costume!"
Nicole sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. Their act, a fusion of her karate prowess and her husband... well, his sheer enthusiasm, was her idea. It was supposed to be a blend of grace and comedic chaos, highlighting her discipline and his complete there-of-lacking. They had practiced, though Richard often lazing around and always looking forward to break times to eat something.
After a few initial competitions from some of the previous contestants, it was finally their turn. The MC's voice boomed over the speakers.
The MC: "And now, let's give a warm welcome to... Nicole and Richard Watterson!"
Nicole heard it as she took a deep breath and winked at Richard.
Nicole: "Let's do it!"
They walked onto the stage, spotlight blinding them for second. The audience, a motley crew of Elmore residents, cheered with varying degrees of enthusiasm. Nicole stood tall and focused, while Richard, still adjusting his jumpsuit, tripped over his own feet clumsily, nearly dropping a potted plant into the orchestra pit.
Ignoring the near-disaster her husband have caused, Nicole bowed to the audience. The plan was simple. She would begin with a series of swift and powerful karate moves, demonstrating her mastery of the martial art. Then, as the climax, she would attempt to break a stack of wooden boards with her hand, while her husband Richard would... well, his role was more of a mystery to everyone, including himself.
Nicole's movements were fluid and captivating. Her legs spun in a blur of motion, each punch and kick precise and controlled. Which made the audience were all impressed and murmured in awe. Her performance was a testament to years of hard work and dedication.
Richard, meanwhile, stood awkwardly on the sidelines, attempting to look dignified while secretly distracted by a half-eaten bag of chips near the stage. He had been given a wooden practice sword, which he held with the same grace as a toddler holding a toy octopus.
As Nicole geared up for the board breaking finale, she glanced at Richard, giving him the prearranged signal: a slight nod. This was Richard's cue to... well, she wasn't entirely sure what he was supposed to do. She had only told him that it involved 'being supportive' and 'not messing up'.
Nicole positioned the boards, her focus laser-sharp. She took a deep breath, gathered her inner power, and prepared to strike. But just as her hand was about to meet the wood, her husband, Richard, in his attempt to 'be supportive', sprinted towards her, yelling.
Richard: "Go, honey, go! You can do it! For the glory of sausages!"
He tripped.
Richard's massive body tumbled forward, sending him sprawling into the stack of boards, which erupted into splintered fragments. Nicole, with her years of martial arts training and finely tuned reflexes, managed to avoid getting squashed by her flailing husband.
The audience below, initially bewildered by the sudden turn of events, erupted into laughter, their clapping replaced with gasps and cheers. Richard still lay on the stage, surrounded by broken wood and looking utterly perplexed, while his wife Nicole stared at the mess, a mixture of disbelief and faint amusement flickering across her face.
The MC, his eyes wide with shock and barely contained mirth, grabbed the microphone as he spoke.
The MC: "Well, folks, that was... unexpected! I guess Richard Watterson just showed us his special 'board-breaking' technique... the full body slam!"
As the laughter continued, Richard finally managed to sit up, rubbing his head. He looked at the broken boards, then at Nicole, his eyes wide with a mix of confusion and pride as he asked his wife, a slight gap-toothed smile spreading across his face.
Richard: "Did I do good, honey?"
Nicole was still a bit flabbergasted before she's unable to suppress a grin as she shook her head.
Nicole: "Richard, you somehow managed to break the boards without even trying!"
Then the couple also laughed along with the audience below, they had not expected a slapstick comedy act, but somehow, they'd received what they secretly craved.
The next few minutes were a blur of applause and cheers as the rest of the contestants delivered their numbers, but most of the audience were clearly still buzzed over the Watterson's performance. And so, the final verdict was announced.
The MC: "And the winners of 'Elmore's Got Talent' tonight are... Nicole and Richard Watterson!"
The announcer bellowed, his voice cracking with amusement. Nicole stared at Richard, a completely bewildered expression on her face. Richard, on the other hand, was beaming in front of his wife like a child who'd just been given a mountain of donuts. They had won. They, with their chaotic, unplanned, and utterly ridiculous performance, had somehow won the entire talent show.
As they walked back off stage, the MC stopped them.
The MC: "Well, I'm not going to lie, we were planning to give the trophy to some talented young magician who took his turn right before you two."
Then the MC looked at Richard as he continued.
The MC: "But the way you broke those boards with full force... if you can call that a full force, it's a unique talent!"
Then, they were presented with a sparkly trophy, and the prize, a money sack which contains $100,000! And then, the MC took out 5 plane tickets and gave it to the couple.
The MC: "Here you go! Enjoy your summer holiday!"
As the MC walked away, Nicole turned her attention to her husband as she let out her emotional tears.
Nicole: "I... I can't believe we won, Richard! Look at the prize money! Now we won't have to worry about our family's financial problems for years!"
Nicole then glanced over the 5 plane tickets, which she's holding on her paws as she continued.
Nicole: "Not only that, we'd also won these free airline tickets for the whole family. How cool is that!"
Richard smiled as he patted his hand on her shoulder. Nicole still looked at her husband as she said, shaking her head.
Nicole: "And I was sure my karate skills would impress them."
Richard chuckled as he patted his tummy, a look of profound satisfaction on his face.
Richard: "Honey, you were impressive! But, you know, sometimes, you just had to go with your gut, or maybe... your whole body!"
They both giggled to each others for a moment before they left the center together with their prizes. As they're driving home that night, Nicole couldn't help but let out a smile to her husband. She had gone into the talent show with a plan, a vision of her grace and strength on full display. However, she had witnessed her husband clumsiness and silliness (and also the board-breaking properties of his substantial mass) have somehow won them the grand prize! It was a reminder that sometimes, the best moments in life are the ones you expected the least. And sometimes, all you need is a little chaos and a very enthusiastic pink bunny husband to make your life more colorful.
