Jim Beckett parked his car in front of Sara's modest Connecticut home, taking a deep breath before stepping out. Nothing could have prepared him for the flood of emotions coursing through him as he approached the door. He knocked lightly, and Kate answered, holding Grayson in her arms.
"Dad," she greeted softly, stepping aside to let him in. She adjusted Grayson on her hip and smiled. "This is Grayson, Mom's grandson." Jim's eyes softened as he leaned in closer to the baby. "His eyes look just like Jo's," he said quietly. Kate nodded, her smile tinged with nostalgia. "Wait til you see Sara. She looks so much like Mom. She's in the living room."
Jim followed her in, his heart tightening as he saw Sara seated on the couch, a blanket draped over her lap. Despite her frail appearance, her smile was warm and welcoming.
"You must be Jim," Sara said, her voice gentle but steady.
Jim nodded, his voice catching. "And you must be . . . God, you're the spitting image of Jo."
They shared a quiet moment, their eyes meeting in mutual understanding. Then Kate handed Grayson to Jim. "And you've already met Grayson," she said, smiling. Grayson let out a soft coo, his tiny hand clutching at Jim's shirt.
Jim's eyes glistened as he held Jo's grandson for the first time. "He's beautiful," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "So much of Jo lives on in the three of you."
Kate wiped a tear from her eye and excused herself to the kitchen to prepare a bottle for Grayson, leaving Jim and Sara alone.
Jim sat beside her, still cradling Grayson. "I'm so glad to meet you," he said softly. "You've given me a piece of Jo back that I didn't know I was missing."
Sara's smile faltered slightly. "I just wish there was more time," she admitted, her voice tinged with sadness. "There's still so much I want to do, but..."
Jim reached over, placing his hand gently over hers. "Jo was the love of my life, and I know how much she would have wanted this moment. She talked about you often, even if she couldn't tell Kate. She hoped you'd find your way to us someday."
Sara blinked back tears. "She must have been an incredible woman."
Jim nodded. "She was." He paused, gathering his thoughts. "Facing the end is hard, but you've given so much love to Grayson and to Kate. That's what will matter most to them."
Sara looked down at her hands. "I'm scared, Jim. Not for me, but for Grayson."
"He'll always have a family," Jim assured her. "We'll make sure he knows how much he's loved, just like Jo would have wanted."
The two sat in silence for a while, the weight of the moment hanging between them. Then Jim leaned forward and said, "If you ever feel like talking, even just about Jo, I'm here."
Sara smiled, her eyes filled with gratitude. "Thank you. That means a lot."
When Kate returned, bottle in hand, she paused in the doorway, watching her father and sister. At that moment, she felt deep connections forming, even as time seemed to slip away too quickly. Jim looked down at Grayson, who had begun to stir, and gently handed him back to Sara. "Here," he said softly, "he'll probably be more comfortable with you."
Sara took Grayson into her arms, adjusting him against her chest before offering him the bottle. As he latched on eagerly, she brushed a hand over his soft curls, her expression a mix of love and sorrow. "He's growing so fast," she murmured.
Kate sat beside Sara and glanced at her father. "Sara, Dad, and I have been talking. We want to help, not just by visiting but by making things easier for you."
Sara looked at them, curiosity and hesitation in her eyes. "What do you mean?"
Jim took a breath, glancing at Kate for support. "Rick Castle has a 3-bedroom rental, fully furnished and currently vacant. It's in the same building you visited in NYC."
Kate nodded. "You wouldn't have to go through this alone. We could all move into this apartment, and Dad and I could help you with Grayson. I know moving is a big step, but this way, you'd have support every day, and Grayson could get more comfortable with me as a caregiver."
Sara's face softened, but uncertainty flickered in her expression. She looked around the living room, eyes lingering on Grayson's toys, the framed pictures on the mantel, and the place she had called home. "I've built a life here, but I know I can't take care of Grayson alone anymore and can't afford a full-time nanny. I don't want to wait until it's too hard to make this kind of move. But, rent in NYC. That's beyond my means, and I don't want you two spending your savings."
Jim reached for her hand again. "Rick is generously offering us this rental for free. You focus on what's best for you and Grayson."
Kate squeezed Sara's arm gently. "Just think about it. You don't have to decide now. But we want to make sure you're taken care of."
Sara exhaled, emotion thick in her voice. "I… I think you're right. I can't do this alone anymore. Grayson needs stability, and I need the help. If you already have an apartment in New York, then maybe it's time I accept that offer. Rick is incredibly generous in doing this for us. It's more than I ever expected."
Kate nodded, her voice warm. "Yeah, that's Castle for you. When it really matters, he steps up. And so will we."
Jim smiled warmly. "That's wonderful, Sara. And trust me, it's not just an offer—this is something Kate and I want to do. You'll have us close by, and don't worry about Rick. He's so sweet on Kate; he'd be willing to do anything to see her smile."
Kate laughed, "He's not wrong, but I do know if we all move into Castle's building, it will make him very happy."
Sara smirked, "I'm sure it will since he will be closer to the love of his life."
Kate takes Sara's hands in her own. "So, help me make the love of my life happy."
Sara nodded, "That actually makes this a little easier to process. Being in a place with people who love each other so fiercely… I think this is the best choice for Grayson and me. And knowing Rick is willing to do this for us—it's beyond generous. He's always been kind, but this… this is something else."
Kate leaned in, wrapping an arm around Sara in a gentle hug. "You don't have to do this alone, Sara. We're in this together."
Just then, a loud burp erupted from Grayson, breaking the emotional moment. The room fell silent for a beat before Sara chuckled, shaking her head. "Well, I think Grayson agrees with the decision."
Kate and Jim both laughed, the tension in the room easing slightly. "That's one way to voice approval," Jim said with a grin.
