Chapter 87
Two chapters in one week?! Who even am I? Lol I'm trying really hard to finish up this story for you all. I have so many ideas for how to get this story to the season 7 finale. I won't write Hanna into Hyperion Heights, but to get to the finale will require me to either write through her high school years, or skip ahead and just give a huge info dump. I really don't want to do the second option. If you all have any ideas for some high school Hanna drama let me know! Enjoy :)
Hanna trudged through the hallway towards her mom's classroom. Now that her mom knew she was grounded, Hanna was no longer allowed to do as she pleased after school. She wasn't even allowed to go home by herself. For some reason, her mom didn't trust her to actually go home. Now Hanna was forced to wait until her mom was done.
Hanna made it to the classroom. She walked over to her mom's desk, put her backpack on the floor, and slumped into the desk chair. "I don't understand why I can't just go home."
"Hanna, we are not going over this again." Snow was walking up and down the aisles putting papers on the desks for the next day's morning work. "Why don't you get started on your homework?"
"No, I like doing it at home." Hanna spun herself around in the chair.
"You can grade those spelling tests for me."
Hanna stopped spinning and eyed up the papers sitting on the desk. "Nah." She pushed the desk to spin herself around again. "Can I go to the vending machines and get a snack?"
"No. If you're hungry there are bags of goldfish in the cupboard."
"I don't like goldfish. Please, can I just go?"
Snow held onto the chair to stop the spinning. "No."
Hanna furrowed her eyebrows at her mom.
"Jump up so I can grade these, then we can leave."
Hanna groaned, but got up from the chair. She took her backpack and sat down at one of the kids' desks and waited.
After her mom was done, they went to Ashley's to pick up Neal. Hanna went inside and was surprised by how many kids were running around. She usually waited in the car when they dropped Neal off in the mornings.
Ashley brought Neal over to them, and Hanna smiled when he reached for her. "Hi baby." Hanna took him from Ashley and gave him a kiss on the cheek, then he laid his head down on her shoulder. Hanna wrapped her arms around him. "I missed you."
"How was he today?" Snow asked.
"He was great," Ashley said. "He ate really well and took two long naps."
"Way to go buddy." Hanna said.
Neal looked up at her and smiled, then he turned and reached for Snow.
Hanna gave him to her mom, then turned to Ashley. "You seem to have your hands full."
"Yeah we've really added a lot of new kids. We're looking to get a bigger place."
"That's wonderful," Snow said.
"Thank you. I have a few people who help out, but if you know of anyone who needs a job send them my way."
Snow gave Hanna a nudge. "This one is pretty good with kids."
Hanna shrugged. "I'm good with Neal."
"Well, if you want to test your skills with another kid, you can babysit Alexandra anytime."
"Yeah that might be fun," Hanna said. She really did love spending time with Neal, so maybe another kid would be fun too.
"I think that's a great idea," Snow said. "If you and Sean need a date night, give her a call."
"I will." Ashley looked towards two toddlers on the other side of the room. "Oh those two have been fighting over that monster truck all day. I've got to go."
Snow and Hanna said their goodbyes and headed home.
They weren't home for long when Emma burst into the loft. "It's Killian! He didn't leave me. Well…he didn't mean to."
"Emma, slow down," Snow said.
"What happened?" Hanna asked.
Emma told them how she got a message from Killian through a seashell. She found it in a box of his things when she was taking it to the garage. He told her he didn't mean to leave. He was on his way back to her, and Gideon sent him away. He told her he loves her and is trying to get home to her. After getting the message, Gideon confronted her. He managed to get his hands on Emma's tears the night she went out with Snow and Regina, and he's using them to prevent any portals between Killian and Emma from opening unless Emma helps him kill the Black Fairy.
"Mom, I'm not sure what to do. I don't know who the Black Fairy is or how to kill her. I don't even know if I should be helping Gideon. I…"
"It's okay, Em." Snow held onto her arms. "Why don't we go talk to Belle and Gold? We can see if they know anything."
Emma nodded. "Okay."
Snow turned to Hanna. "I need you to…"
"Stay with Neal," Hanna said.
"Thank you." Snow gave her a wink. "The timer for the pizza will go off in 8 minutes. Let it cool before you cut it. Make sure you cut Neal's pieces really small. There's leftover green beans in the fridge too. And…"
"Mom, I can handle it. Just go."
"Right." She gave Hanna and Neal each a quick kiss on the cheek before leaving with Emma.
Snow came back just as Hanna and Neal were finishing their informed them that The Black Fairy is his mother. She stole Gideon from the Blue Fairy. She took him to her land and tortured him for 28 years to hurt Gold. He convinced Emma to help Gideon and that's where she was now.
"She's by herself with him?" Hanna asked.
"She's going to be fine." Snow assured her.
"But…"
"Get started on your homework while I give your brother a bath."
Hanna sighed. "Fine." She grabbed her backpack and sat at the table.
Snow reached down and kissed the top of her head. "Try not to worry." She picked Neal up from his highchair and went into the bathroom.
That was easier said than done. Hanna opened her math book to catch up on a few lessons. She did three problems before her mind was flooded with worry about Emma. She shouldn't be alone with Gideon. Hanna had a bad feeling. She closed her book and shoved everything back into her bag. She had to go find Emma. She needed to make sure she was okay. She was already in so much trouble though. If she just left, her mother might actually kill her. Hanna didn't know what to do.
"Are you finished already?"
"Uh, yeah." Hanna looked down at her backpack. "I didn't have much to do tonight."
"Okay. I'm going to wake your father. Do you want to take your brother?" Snow reached the baby out to her.
"Mom?"
"What is it?"
"We need to go to Emma."
"Honey, she can handle this."
Hanna shook her head. "I know something is wrong. I can feel it."
"Hanna…"
"Please! I could have left when you were in the bathroom, but I didn't. Emma is in danger. I know it. You have to believe me. I…"
"Okay. Let's go find her."
"Really?"
Snow nodded. "I made you a promise I would listen the next time you had a feeling about Emma. If you think something is wrong, then we'll go find her." She picked up Neal's diaper bag and held out her hand. "Take us to Granny's. We'll leave Neal with her, then go find your sister."
Hanna smiled and took her mom's hand.
"The Sorcerer's Mansion?" Snow asked. "What are they doing here?"
"I don't know. Come on, let's go." Hanna pulled her mom through the front door. She noticed the mansion was covered with white stuff. "What is this?"
"Spider webs," Snow said. She held Hanna's held a little tighter. "This way." Snow led Hanna through an opening in the webs into another room. Emma was there with Gold.
"Emma!" Hanna ran to her sister and wrapped her arms around her.
"Are you okay?" Snow asked.
"Yeah. I'll never look at Spider-Man again the same way, but I'm fine."
"Rumple, where's our boy?" Belle asked. She came through the doorway behind Snow and Hanna.
Emma and Rumple exchange glances.
"Gideon led Emma to the creature and left her to die."
Snow looked to Emma. "I thought you were helping him."
"I was, but Dark One Junior had different plans. He played me."
"He came to you for help though," Belle said.
Emma shook her head. "I know you want to believe the best in him, but it's like you said…evil is not born, it is made, and that is exactly what the Black Fairy did to him."
"Careful with your accusations, Ms. Swan," Gold threatened. "May I remind you, I saved your life tonight."
"Because your son tried to kill me…again."
"He needs help. You're a hero, Ms. Swan. Gideon is my son."
"You can't keep cleaning up his messes, Gold. He needs to take responsibility for his actions."
"Are you threatening my child?"
"I don't have a choice. He's tried to kill me twice. I'm not gonna give him a third chance."
"Alright, Savior." Gold walked closer to Emma. "If you cross my son, I will do what I must to stop you."
"We didn't start this fight," Snow said. She and Rumple exchanges glances before she turned to Emma. "Let's go home."
Snow went to the bedroom to wake David as soon as they got back to the loft. Emma and Hanna took Neal into the living room to play. He slept some at Granny's and didn't seem to be ready for bed yet. They sat him on the floor and put some of his toys around him.
"So where did you put the tv?" Hanna asked.
Emma smirked. "What do you mean?"
"Dad told me you poofed it away. Where is it?"
"I'm not telling you."
"Emma, come on…"
"Don't you think you're in enough trouble as it is?"
Hanna shrugged.
"Is this where the party is?" David sat next to the girls and Neal.
"Oh yeah it's getting pretty wild in here." Emma tossed Neal's stuffed puppy at him.
David laughed and held out the toy towards Neal. "Come get it, buddy."
Neal reached for the toy.
Hanna repositioned him so he was on his stomach. "If you want it, you gotta crawl for it."
Neal got up onto his knees and began to rock back and forth. He spotted his ball right next to him though. He pushed himself back into a sitting position and picked that up instead.
"Oh, well." David set the puppy down. "Am I up later than usual? It feels later."
Emma and Hanna exchanged glances.
"What happened?"
Emma told him all about her encounter with Gideon and the giant spider.
David shook his head. "This is the second time he's tried to kill you. I'm going to talk to Gold and…"
"Dad, don't." Emma put her hand on his shoulder to stop him from getting up. "Let's just worry about it in the morning."
"Okay."
"Well, since you were about to get up anyway…" Hanna gave her dad a smile. "Could you make us some hot chocolate?"
"Yes, I can make you hot chocolate." David turned to Emma. "Would you like some too?"
Emma raised her eyebrows at him.
David grinned. "Why did I even ask? Of course you would."
"Thanks, Dad," Emma said.
"I'll make Neal a bottle too, and maybe we can get him to bed." David got up from the floor and went to the kitchen.
Hanna was about to ask her sister to bring back the tv again when she noticed Neal had maneuvered himself back onto his hands and knees. His eyes were set on the puppy. "Emma, look!"
"I think he's going to do it this time!"
Hanna scrambled over to the toy and held it a little closer to Neal. "Come on, get the puppy."
Neal reached his arm forward and set it down on the floor further in front of him. He moved his knee forward too.
"Dad, get in here!" Emma called out.
David came running. "What is it?"
"Neal's crawling!" Hanna inched the toy back little by little as Neal got closer. He made it almost the entire length of the living room before Hanna finally left the toy in one spot. Neal took ahold of the puppy and Hanna scooped him up into her arms. "You did it, buddy!"
"That's my boy!" David clapped.
Emma joined in on the clapping "Way to go bro!"
Neal smiled at everyone's excitement. He dropped his puppy and clapped with them.
"You girls cannot tell your mother about this. She'll be crushed she missed it."
"We should have filmed it," Emma said.
"Let's see if we can get him to do it again," Hanna suggested.
She set Neal back on the floor in crawling position. Emma had her phone ready. Hanna held out the puppy towards him. David stood behind her, and they encouraged Neal to come to them. He grinned at them for a few seconds, then pushed himself into a sitting position and began clapping his hands again. David and the girls couldn't help but laugh and join in on the clapping. Neal stopped and let out a yawn, then started to rub his eyes.
David sighed. "I think that's all the crawling we're going to get out of him today."
Hanna shrugged. "When he crawls in front of Mom we can just pretend it's for the first time."
"I'll be asleep, so you two can decide." David picked up Neal and got him ready for bed.
Once Neal was down for the night, David made the hot chocolate he promised the girls.
"Dad, can Emma magic the tv back?" Hanna asked.
"No." David held out Hanna's mug to her.
"Please?" Hanna took her hot cocoa and gave him the eyes.
"Hanna you're in trouble. I am not letting you watch tv."
Emma reached for her mug. "Come on, Dad. Just for one movie?"
"Emma…"
"Please?" She gave her dad the same look as Hanna.
David sighed. "You are just as bad as your sister, you know that?"
"So is that a yes to the movie?" Emma asked.
"Fine." David sat between the girls. "But just one, and then you send the tv back to wherever you're keeping it."
"Deal!" Emma waved her hand and made the tv reappear.
"Are you going to stay here tonight?" David asked.
"Is that okay?" Emma looked up at him. "I don't…want to be alone right now."
"Of course it's okay." David reached down and kissed the top of her head.
"Thanks." Emma smiled, then looked over to Hanna. "What movie do you want?"
"You pick." Hanna didn't care what they watched, she was just glad she was watching something.
The next day, Hanna was working on her math quiz when the classroom phone rang. She wasn't sure why, but she had a bad feeling. Mr. Moore hung up the phone a few seconds later, then his foot steps started coming closer. She hoped he would keep walking past her, but sighed internally when he stopped beside her desk. She looked up at him.
"The principle needs to see you."
"Why?"
"He'll tell you."
Hanna's stomach started to hurt. She could tell he knew what this was about. "I'm not done with my quiz."
"You can finish it another time."
Hanna nodded and left the classroom.
The secretary led Hanna into Mr. Evanston's office. "Have a seat here. He should be back in a minute."
Hanna sat in one of the chairs across from his desk and remembered the last time she was here. She had a feeling this time she wouldn't like the outcome of the meeting. Hanna flinched when she heard the door open.
"I've asked your mother to join us." Mr. Evanston sat down at his desk. "She should be here any minute."
"Am I in trouble?"
"There are a few things we need to discuss. I think it would be best if we waited."
Hanna stared at the clock, counting each tick of the second hand, which seemed to be moving slower as each minute passed. She could feel the palms of her hands start to sweat. She pulled at the collar of her shirt. She would give anything to be wearing her favorite hoodie right now. The second hand was about to make it's fifth rotation when the door opened.
"What is going on?" Snow put her hand on Hanna's shoulder. "Sweetie, are you alright?''
Hanna nodded. She couldn't even look at her mom.
"Jim, if this is another instance of Hanna using her magic to defend someone else I…"
"It's nothing like that."
"Then why have you called me here?"
"Please, have a seat."
Snow sat in the chair next to Hanna and raised her eyebrows at the principle.
"I've been informed by several of Hanna's teachers that her grades are slipping, and they are very concerned."
Snow shook her head. "No. Her grades are fine."
"They say she hasn't been turning in her assignments."
Snow turned to Hanna. "Have you been doing your homework?"
"Yes." That wasn't a total lie. She did it sometimes.
Snow looked back to Mr. Evanston. "Look. I'm sure you're still upset about the magic incident, but that doesn't give you the right to accuse her of not doing her work. I check her grades everyday. The assignments show up as complete, and she has straight A's."
"Hanna, are you sure there isn't anything you want to tell her?"
Hanna's heart was pounding faster. Did he know? How would he? She was sure she covered all of her bases. "There's nothing."
Mr. Evanston turned back to Snow. "The online grade books are showing what you say, but Hanna's teachers also have handwritten grade books and those tell a different story."
Hanna's eyes went wide. She didn't know about those grade books.
"Well, that doesn't make any sense," Snow said. "They must have made a mistake. Maybe they made an error when inputting the grades."
"I don't think so." Mr Evanston turned to Hanna. "Do you have any idea how this error could have happened?"
Hanna fiddled with the hem of her skirt and shrugged.
Snow's head fell into her hands. "Hanna, what did you do?"
"Nothing."
Snow sighed. "You always fidget like that when you're lying."
Hanna made herself still. "I didn't do anything." She was sticking to her story. There's no way they could prove she changed the grades.
"We know the online grade books have been manipulated, and it wasn't a mistake any teacher has made," Mr Evanston said.
Hanna's eyes quickly darted towards him.
"I asked one of the fairies to examine our website after the teachers explained the situation to me," he continued. "Someone used magic to make changes to the grading system. She could sense it was someone newer to using magic."
Hanna's stomach dropped. She chanced a glance at her mom. The look she got in return made her want to throw up her breakfast all over the floor.
"Hanna is the only student at this school with magical abilities."
Snow nodded. "I understand."
"This is the second time she's used magic inappropriately at school. I have no choice but to suspend her."
"Well, to be fair, I don't think I would categorize the first time as inappropriate."
"That's an argument for another time. This, however, is highly unacceptable and will result in a three day suspension starting right now."
"Her grades are declining. Do you really think removing her from school is the answer?"
"The time away will give her a chance to catch up on all the work she has failed to complete." Mr. Evanston placed a thick folder onto his desk. "All the assignments are right here."
"Jim, I'm sure there's something…"
He held up his hand. "That's my final word. You may go now."
Snow picked up the folder. "I'll need you to find a substitute to pick up my class from gym and cover the rest of the day."
"It's already been arranged," he said.
"Well, okay then." Snow walked towards the door. "Hanna, let's go."
Hanna followed her mom through front of the office and into the hallway. "Mom wait. I'm sorry. I…"
"Not now."
