The Flames of Marble.
It was a sad day in Knothole, everyone gathered in the village square, as a memorial service was held for Old Cat, Sergeant Doberman gave the Eulogy.
"Old Cat!" He said. "was a true patriot of his kingdom, a fellow veteran of the Great War, fought to restore our once glorious nation, in doing so has fallen, in the name of King Ian Acorn the Second! So we salute you Cat, May Robotnik suffer the fiery inferno for your passing, and may we never forget… your sacrifice."
He saluted to the portrait of Cat and left the stage, allowing Sally to come up and give a speech.
"Cat." She said, "Was a Freedom Fighter, through and through, he was… always there to assure others, was an excellent navigator, He had no family of his own, but to us, he was always family, May we never forget him."
Others gave their eulogy's trumpets played afterwards and the mourners disbanded, Sonic sat on a log, his head in his hands, Sally came up to him, followed by Tails, Antione and Rotor.
"I could have saved him." Said Soinc, miserably. "I could have busted him out there and then."
"No, I'm the one who left him behind." Said Sally. "I was so caught up in chasing a ghost that I… Ugh, I can't believe I got my hopes up so easily."
"Who was that cloaked stranger?" Asked Tails.
"And how did they be knowing about your childhood nickname?" Asked Antione.
"I don't know." Said Sally. "But at least they were kind enough to give us that map of the underground, that will come in handy."
"And what about the other thing?" Asked Rotor. "The whole Marble Zone file."
"Oh yeah, I forgot." Sally pulled out Nicole. "Nicole, open the Marble Zone file."
"Opening Sally." Said Nichole, as she displayed an image of an ancient ruin, featuring grassy areas growing atop the architecture made of purple bricks, the landscape was filled with stone pillars, fern-like trees and full of lakes and rivers of lava.
"What could Robotnik want in the Marble Zone?" Asked Rotor.
"I don't know." Said Sonic, getting up. "We should check it out."
Meanwhile,
Robotnik saw in his command chair, looking over schematics, when a Crabmeat entered the room.
"The requested mercenaries have arrived, Dr." He said.
"Excellent." Said Robotnik, turning to the door. "Send them in."
The door opened and two large mobians entered, One was a tall Timber wolf, with orange eyes, dressed in Grey armor and a cape, the other was a large muscular creature, possibly a Dingo, colored brown and orange, yellow hair and was dressed only in green shorts, and brown gloves, he also wore purple glasses.
"Dr. Robotnik." Greated the timber wolf with a bow. "Sleet and Dingo, Professional mercenaries, at your service."
"I would require your service 24/7." Said Robotnik.
Sleet was Stunned. "Uh, A most… flattering proposition Sir, But uh, We're independent contractors."
"He means uh." Dingo struggled with his words. "We work by ourselves."
"Not anymore." Said Robotnik. " From now on, you two work for me, full time."
"B-But my lord." Said Sleet. "We have other clients-"
Robotnik pressed a button and several Robians came forward, surrounding the two Bounty Hunters.
Sleet gulped. "Then again, screw our other clients, this is essentially the Big leagues anyway."
"Excellent." Said Robotnik as he got up. " I knew you gentlemen would see it my way."
He walked out of the room and down a hallway, with Sleet and Dingo following.
"You two are the first of a special task force I'm putting together." Robotnik explained. "You will be supplied with the latest, most elite Badnik commandos, we can supply."
They entered a room and found Snively overlooking some final adjustments.
"Snively." Said Robotnik. "Are the two prototypes prepared?"
"Preparing for activation now Sir." Snively replied, as he pressed a button.
Two capsules opened up and two Badniks emerged, one was a chicken, Far more humanoid than Cluck and the other was shorter, green and tank like, and also resembled a mole, he also seemed to have drills for hands.
"Elite Badniks, Designation: Scratch and Grounder, ready for operation Sir." Snively Stated.
"Excellent." Robotnik turned to Sleet and Dingo. " These will be to your liking I trust, gentlemen."
"I suppose." Said Sleet.
The Chicken robot, Scratch, gave his companion Grounder a condescending look. "I was constructed first, I'm Dr. Robotnik's favorite!"
"Oh yeah?" Asked Grounder. "Well I've got more accessories, he likes me best, so there!"
Scratch Said nothing, he just pretended to look away and kicked Grounder in the treads.
"Ow!" Grounder Exclaimed, furiously turning to Scratch. "You did that on purpose!"
He then proceeded to poke Scratch repeatedly with his drill nose, Much to the bafflement of Robotnik, Snively, Sleet and Dingo.
"Uh, are they supposed to be All… "Looney Tuney?" Asked Dingo.
Robotnik growled and immediately grabbed the two Badniks by their throats. "ENOUGH!"
He then slammed them down. "I built you two for a specific purpose and you will work together on it, or I will personally dismember you both MYSELF!"
"Yes Sir…" They quivered.
"Good, Now then." Robotnik walked to the end of the room. "The four of you, are hereby dubbed, The Super Special Freedom Fighter Search and Destroy Squad, my answer to the Insurgency."
He activated a screen and explained. "Ever since I brought down the antiquated Kingdom of Acorn, I have worked to establish a regime of metal, In order to create utopia ruled by machines, however, for the past year, the former crown princess, Sally Acorn, has bean leading a group of rebels Known as "Freedom Fighters" in disrupting that dream, chief among them, one trouble making eulipotyphla, who has made TEAR EVERY HAIR! FROM MY BEAUTIFUL HEAD!"
He pressed a button and showed an image of Sonic. "They've disrupted my supply lines, escaped my traps! Help nice people, and I. Want. Them. DESTROYED!"
"Leave it to us, your grace." Said Sleet. "Consider these Freedom Fighters destroyed."
As Robotnik continued to brief the squad, A Red and gray monkey badnik watched from outside the room.
"This is why Dr Robotnik demoted me to sanitation duty isn't?" He asked himself. "It's not fair! I should be the one to capture those Freedom Fighters! Me! Coconuts! He's giving these bozos MY job! I'll show them, I'll capture those Freedom Fighters first!"
Meanwhile,
Sonic, Sally, Tails, Antoine and Rotor trekked over the purple mountain scape and finally reached their destination.
"There it is." Said Rotor. "The Marble Zone."
And there, nestled in the valley before them, was that very place, Greco-Roman architecture and all, sprawling everywhere, The Freedom Fighters quickly made their way down and beheld their new surroundings.
"These were the ruins of the ancient owl tribes." Sally explained. "It was possibly a forge of some kind, before the lava overflowed."
"But what does Robotnik being wanting here?" Asked Antione, he jumped as a fireball shot out and he ended up in Sonic's arms.
"Ah, Oh, I was just… practicing my reflexes no?" He muttered, Sonic promptly dropped him.
Just then, Tails heard something. "Duck!" he shouted, and everyone took cover as a swarm of Buzz Bombers flew over them, seemingly taking no notice, The group silently followed them and found the rest of the Marble Zone being dug up by Badniks, SWATBots and Buzz Bombers were everywhere, excavating the ruins and traveling in and out of the Tunnels, among them, was a humanoid Buzz Bomber, giving orders.
"Faster you lot!" She barked. "Dr. Robotnik wants it found as soon as possible!"
"Commander Blast Bomber." Reported a SWATBot. "We've discovered an Anomaly at the end of Sector 2."
"Excellent." Said Blast Bomber, as she took off. "Continued the Excavations!"
As she left, The Freedom Fighters crept out of the undergrowth.
"An Anomaly?" Asked Rotor.
Sally pulled out Nicole. "Nicole, Do a long range scan of the area, notify me of any Anomalies?"
"Computing now, Sally." Said Nicole, before starting to blink. "Warning, Badniks aware of presence!"
The Freedom Fighters looked around in alarm, But the SWATBots and Buzz Bombers hadn't noticed them yet.
"What-?" Sonic jumped back as a purple robot, made up of four spherical segments popped out for the ground.
"Catakillers!" Cried Rotor! More popped out, Antoine swung his blade and decapitated one of them, While Sally kicked at another, The SWATBots and Buzz Bombers saw them and immediately opened fire.
"Priority One, Hedgehog!" Said the SWATBots as they fired on Sonic, he dodged their attacks and launched himself at them, destroying a good many in his path, Sally and the others quickly followed after him as they jumped over Lava, retreated down a slope, and into the caverns.
Inside, they listened to the sounds of Badniks above, searched for them and then found their way cut off by four glass pillars, rising up and falling down, they carefully maneuvered through them and moved deeper into the caves.
"Okay, I think we're in the clear now." Said Sonic, looking around.
Just then, Several lights came on behind them. When they turned around, a swarm of robot bats swooped down and surrounded them.
"Agh! Bat Brains!" Exclaimed Sonic, swatting them away and jumping up to destroy one, Tails quickly jumped away as hidden spikes came out of the ground, The Freedom Fighters quickly dispatched the Bat Brains, not letting one of them escape, and freeing the animals inside.
"Well that takes care of that." Said Sally. "Now how do we get out of this cavern?"
Rotor then picked up a Batbrain and started tinkering with it.
"Yo Rote." Said Sonic, taking notice. "What are you thinking?"
"I'm reprogramming this Bat Brain." Said Rotor. "If we can have it on our side, we could use it to lead us out of here."
"That's a great Idea!" Said Tails.
"Problem is." Rotor frowned. "We would need an Animal to power it, and I don't want to stoop to… Robotnik's level."
Sally took notice of one of the Rikki's. "Maybe we won't have to."
She knelt down to the Rikki and spoke softly, in a language unintelligible to the others but Sonic.
She turned back to the others. "She says she'll help."
"Alright then." Said Rotor, holding up the repaired Bat Brain. "In you go!"
The Rikki jumped into the Bat Brain and with lights shining from its eyes, It led the Freedom Fighters over rivers of Lava, which they crossed with fallen stones, avoided death traps and finally, they emerged on the other side.
"Alright! We're out!" Cheered Sonic.
"Thanks for the help, little guy." Said Rotor, patting the Bat Brain.
"Yes, please to be past all that." Said Antione, he jumped as he quickly used his Sword to swat away a Coconut, which promptly exploded, the group looked up and as Coconuts piloting an Egg Mobile, A host of Buzz Bombers behind him.
"Gah Ha Ha Ha!" He cackled. "In the name of Dr. Robotnik! I declare open season on Freedom Fighters! Wo ho ho ho ha ha ha ha!"
"Uh, I thought we just saw the Badnik Commander." Said Sonic.
Coconuts balked. "Wha… I'm no common Commander! I'm Coconuts! The most motorized monkey in all of Robotnik's Badnik horde!"
The Freedom Fighters blinked.
"Uh, We fought like, Thirty times!" Coconuts asked.
Still nothing.
"I once tricked Sonic with a fake Chili Dog stand?" He asked, hoping for some recollection.
"Uh… Have I… Did you and I ever have a past encounter?" Asked Sally.
"No, not really." Coconuts replied.
"Well then I guess you're just from some bad Comedy." Said Sonic, and the other Freedom Fighters laughed.
Coconuts gritted his teeth. "Oh yeah?! Buzz Bombers! ATTACK!"
The Buzz Bombers fired upon the Freedom Fighters, who all scattered and took cover, Rotor released a small turret that fired back at the Buzz Bombers, and fired his own gun in tangent.
A herd of Catakillers emerged too, prompting Antione, Sally and Tails to dispatch them in close quarters, Sonic meanwhile, went straight for Coconuts in the Scorcher, The Monkey Bot fired a stream of fire that Sonic quickly avoided as he hit the Egg Mobile.
"Alright you sassy little simian." Sonic said. "Let's play monkey in the middle!"
He hit the pod again and again, getting Coconuts more and more agitated. "Hold still you pest!"
He then lobbed a Coconut Bomb at him, but Sonic managed to kick it back at the Mechanical Monkey, hitting the Egg Mobile and sending Coconuts crashing down.
"Now that's what I call the missing link." Sonic smirked as Coconuts crawled out of the wreck.
"Alright now." Said Sally, once they finished off the last of the Badniks. "Let's move now, before some other surprise comes our way."
As the Freedom Fighters headed off, They didn't see a purple scorpion shaped aircraft stalking them.
"An impressive display of combat." Said Sleet, as he, Dingo, Scratch and Grounder watched them go. "We'll scatter them first, then pick them off, one by one."
And they took off after them.
Later,
The Freedom Fighters continued on their way, fighting through any Badniks they came across, Sally held Nicole out like a compass as she led them to where the Power Source possibly was.
"Three feet, due north." Nicole responded.
"Good." Said Sally. "Now we just need to go through… another cavern."
"Oh, again?!" Groaned Antione. "Can we not be finding a route more… shall we be saying, surface level?"
"Antione." Sonic said. "Can you not whine for at least-"
A sudden explosion cut Sonic off and sent them all tumbling down the hill and into the caverns, from above, The Search and Destroy Squad disembarked.
"Engage autopilot." Sleet ordered, as he got out. "Come friends, let us search and destroy!"
Meanwhile,
In the caverns, Sonic felt himself and suddenly had to dodge out of the way of several fire balls, coming from the walls, before stopping at another lava pool.
"Okay…" Breathed Sally. "We should be fine for now."
Sonic nodded before realizing something. "Wait, Sally, where are the others?"
Meanwhile,
Tails, Rotor and Antione had scrambled into another cave, and were wandering around, looking for Sonic and Sally.
"They must have gone down a different cavern." Said Rotor, as he picked up a torch. "We'll hopefully meet up with them once we're out of here."
Antoine gulped. "Sooner rather than later I am hoping."
And so they trudged onwards, unaware of Dingo, Scratch and Grounder following them.
Meanwhile,
Sonic and Sally climbed down the cavern quickly, narrowly avoiding the spikes, and landing safely on the ground.
"Okay." Said Sonic. "I think we're good for-"
But than they felt something hot at their backs, and turned around to see a current of lava careening towards them, with a yelp, they quickly hurried down the tunnel, ducking and jumping various loose stones, until they reached a higher ground, where the lava couldn't reach them, Sonic kept running, leaving Sally behind, with Sleet silently stalking her.
Meanwhile,
Tails, Rotor and Antione found themselves with another pool of lava.
"Well, this is inconvenient." Said Rotor. "Tails, you take Antione and fly over."
"Alright." Said Tails, ss he and Antione flew over the lava, they looked back at Rotor. "What about you?" Asked Tails.
"Don't worry." Said Rotor. "I'll figure something-gak!" A long orange Claw grabbed Rotor by the throat and pulled him away into the Darkness.
Antione and Tails screamed and ran off, up the narrow passageway, until a Rope suddenly wrapped itself around Tails leg and brought him down!
Antione stopped and saw Tails being dragged upwards, by a large, chicken Robot.
"Bwa-Ha-Ha-Ha!" Scratch laughed. "What's wrong Freedom Fighter? Missing your friend?"
Antione pulled out his Sword and almost tried to fight Scratch, but something emerged from the ground behind him. He looked back and saw Grounder, his drill hands converting into swords, his upper torso started spinning like a top, as he rolled words Antione.
"Oh Zut Alors!" Antione cried.
Meanwhile,
Sonic and Sally had managed to get over a casym, using booby trap platforms and crushers and almost reached the surface.
"Notification." Said Nicole. "Anomaly up ahead."
"Sonic!" Called Sally. "Wait for-Oof!"
A Pair of bolas wrapped themselves around her feet and she toppled over, a figure then stood over her.
"A pleasure and a must to meet you Princess." Said Sleet, kneeling down to her. "Super Special Freedom Fighter Search and Destroy Squad, at your inconvenience."
Meanwhile,
Sonic hopped to the surface and looked around.
"Sally?" He called out, but she wasn't anywhere to be seen, then, he quickly hid as Blast Bomber arrived, with a squad of Buzz Bombers as a joint group of SWATbots and Catakillers were surrounding a large floating ring.
"So you found it at last?" Asked Blast Bomber.
"Affirmative." Said the lead SWATBot. "We've detected the objective power coming from this portal ring."
Blast Bomber inspected. "Hmm, It must have made A pocket dimension to protect itself."
As she prepared to enter, Sonic suddenly sprang forward and jumped in first!
He woke up in a white void, floating around aimlessly, until an Emerald green bird came up to him.
"Oh, hey there." Said Sonic.
The bird said nothing, he just cocked his head curiously at Sonic.
"So…" Said Sonic. "Do you know where I am?"
The bird, ever silent, it just turned into a Sapphire Fish and disappeared into the void, the white suddenly gave way to a new world of blocks, with A backdrop of blue skies and emerald birds in the background, Sonic looked up and saw an object surrounded by jump stands.
"What's that?" He asked, then, he felt the ground under him moving and before he knew it, he was tumbling down, then falling, as the block he was standing on moved, as he landed, the ground was moving, again and again, making Sonic stumble and fall all over the place.
"Okay weird sparkly world." He said. "You wanna roll, let's roll!"
And he spin dashed upwards, jumping from wall to wall as the momentum shifted, he stopped suddenly, when he saw some blocks replace with blue sphere's, flashing read and reading Goal on them, Sonic backed up into some bumpers, and they sent him flying off over the Goal Balls and towards another wall, The backdrop changed from the emerald birds and into the blue fish with bubbles, as this happened.
Sonic soon landed on a circle with a green R in it, which changed the blocks from drifting up to drifting down, Sonic slid down with them and leapt up to another Bumber that propelled him right towards the Jump Stands, The blue object inside was then surrounded by blue diamonds, Sonic curled into a ball and began digging into the Diamonds, which changed from green, to yellow, to purple, until they were gone, Sonic than jumped in and grabbed the object, there was bright flash and than, in a bright flash of Sparkles Sonic was propelled up into a bright light, and before he knew it!
He was right back in the Marble Zone.
"What was that?!" He exclaimed, he then looked at what he collected and found it was Blue Emerald.
"My Gaia…" Sonic breathed. "C-Could it be?"
"The Chaos Emerald!"
Sonic blinked back to reality and found himself surrounded by SWATBots, Buzz Bombers, Bat Brains and Catakillers led by Blast Bomber.
"Surrender the Chaos Emerald Hedgehog!" She demanded. "Now!"
"What's so important about this Emerald?" Asked Sonic.
"Just give it!" Blast Bomber swooped down to grab it, But Sonic jumped over her, Blast Bomber than shot her canon at Sonic, But he dodged out of the way, She swooped again and Sonic spin dashed her in the face, making his spin out of control, but she recomposed herself and fired again, this went on and on, until Sonic knocked a blast back in her face, the resulting explosion caused her to crash into the Lava, where she melted away.
"Sorry to take down your boss lady." Sonic said to the surrounding Badniks. "Now who else wants some?"
But the Badniks didn't even move.
"I don't think they're the ones who'll be wanting something, My good Hedgehog." Said a voice, Sonic turned and saw Sleet, standing on a ledge with Sally being held by Scratch, Rotor and Antione by Dingo and Tails being held by Grounder.
"Guys!" Exclaimed Sonic in alarm.
"Now then." Said Sleet. "You have two options Hedgehog, surrender now!" He drew his Sword and held it at Sally's neck. "Or your Princess is going to need more than a castle!"
"Whoever you losers are." Said Sonic, stepping forward. "You're gonna let my-!"
Scratch whipped out a gun from his arm and shot at Sonic's feet, making the hedgehog jump back.
"Your choice my friend!" Called Sleet. "And you'd better choose wisely."
Sonic sighed. "Okay, just don't hurt them!" And he held his hands up.
Later,
The Freedom Fighters were then placed in an Animal Capsule and listened as Sleet made his call to Dr. Robotnik.
"We have them Dr." Sleet reported, as he called from Grounders built in phone, he then held up the Chaos Emerald. "And with a pretty little bonus too."
"Excellent." Robotnik responded. "I'll be right there."
And he hung up.
"Wow, It's hardly any wonder Dr. Robotnik made us so persistent." Said Grounder as he retracted his phone.
"He made ME persistent, he made you too dumb to quit!" Scratch snarled, poking Grounders head.
"You're all Dumb!" Exclaimed Coconuts as he stormed up. "Those Freedom Fighters are my prisoners! I ain't going back to scrubbing toilets you hear me-!"
Grounder just fired a rocket at the Monkey bot, blowing him to pieces.
As the Freedom Fighters listened, Sally got an Idea. "You know." She called out. "One has to wonder what Robotniks pays you gentleman enough to work for him."
"Plenty enough." Said Dingo.
"More than them?" Asked Sally, pointing at Scratch and Grounder.
"They're just rented reinforcements, nothing more." Sleet said, the two Badniks were quite offended by this.
"Hey! Why can't we share in the profit?" Asked Scratch.
"Because you ain't worth the insurance." Said Dingo, flicking Scratches beak.
"Hey! What's that supposed to mean?!" Asked Grounder.
"Guys! Guys!" Said Sally. "Why waste your time trying to get Robotnik to pay you? I could be willing to pay more handsomely for your services."
Sleet raised an eyebrow. "You could?"
"Of course, I'm a princess after all." Said Sally. "Just let me out, and we'll discuss it."
Sleet narrowed his eyes, he silently nodded to Dingo and moved to open the hatch, then Sonic spun out with a Spin dash, knocking him to the ground and snatching the Chaos Emerald from his grasp. "I'll take that thank you very much!"
Sally, Tails, Antione and Rotor followed suit as they engaged the Badniks, Rotor shot down Bat Brains, Tails punched Buzz Bombers, Antione decapitated Catekillers and Sally kicked down SWATBots.
Sleet got back to his feet and yelled to Dingo, Scratch and Grounder. "Get them!" As he drew his Sword and Pistol, Dingo bounded up first, his hands morphing into an Axe and Spiked Ball, which he swung at Rotor, The Walrus quickly jumped back as Dingo tried to clober him, Than Antione came in and poked him in the Butt with his Sword.
"YOUW!" Dingo wailed, and Rotor then smacked him with the butt of his rifle, knocking him out cold.
Meanwhile, Tails was dodging Scratch as the Robot Chicken fired upon him again and again, missing everytime, this left him unaware of Sonic standing right behind him, waving a red carpet in front of Grounder.
"Toro! Toro!" Said Sonic, waving the Red Carpet and making Grounder charge, He missed Sonic entirely and crashed into Scratch, causing them both to tumble right into the capsule.
Sally and Sleet faced off, with Sleet swiping and jabbing at Sally with his sword, which the Princess gracefully dodged and avoided at all time, Antione than tossed Sally his Sword, and the Princess caught it gracefully, and carried Sleets attacks, however, Dingo came up from behind her and and extra pair of arms with claws emerged, he tried to grab Sally, only for Tails to land on his head, sending him tumbling into Sleet, which allowed Sally to trip them both with a sweep kick.
Then came Sonic to finish them off by throwing them in the Capsule, just as Scratch and Grounder were coming out of it.
"Oh yeah! That's how Freedom Fighters do it!" Said Sonic, as everyone high fived each other.
"Don't celebrate yet." Said Sally, pointing up. "Look! Robotniks coming!"
And sure enough, there was Robotnik, flying towards the scene in his Egg-O-Matic, He was followed by Snively in his own Egg Mobile.
"Nothing a little dust storm won't fix." Said Sonic as he raced around the Capsule, sending clouds of dust bellowing up, Catching Robotnik and Snively in its grasp, Sally whipped out Nicole. "Nicole, engage Audio mimicry, SWATBots."
Robotnik and Snively struggled to keep their Mobiles airborne as the winds blew against them, then Robotnik got a call.
"Dr. Robotnik, State your dilemma!" Came a "SWATBot."
"Snively and I are in a dust storm!" Robotnik cried.
"We will guide you, Sir." Said the "SWATBot." "Do you see the red light?"
A small red light seemed to appear in the cloud, blinking on and off, this was of course, Tails just playing with a Flashlight.
"Yes! I see it!" Robotnik cried.
"You are three feet above the ground, Cut your Engines." Came the voice.
"You heard them Snively!" Robotnik called over. "Cut your Engines!"
"But Sir!" Protested Snively. "That would just-!"
"Now!" Robotnik roared.
"Yes Sir." Snively and Robotnik cut their engines, sending them both crashing down atop the Egg Capsule, the dust cloud dissipated and there lay Robotnik and Snively, their Egg Mobiles wrecked as the capsule containing Sleet, Dingo, Scratch and Grounder was destroyed.
"Oh…Wha… What happened?" Asked Robotnik, pulling himself out of the wreck, He then saw the Search and Destroyed squad squatting in what was left of the capsule.
"Eh he he he." Sleet nervously chuckled. "The… Quiet the comedians, aren't they?"
Meanwhile,
Sonic and the Freedom Fighters soon made their way out of the Marble Zone and looked at what they found.
"A Chaos Emerald!" Exclaimed Sally. "One of the seven fabled gems of Mobius!"

I Briefly considered having Ian Hames Corlett, Garry Chalk and Phil Hayes reprise the roles, But I wanted to try something new. You can still imagine these voices if you want, I certainly did.
