It was the moment their eyes met that he realized just how real everything was. Everything that was about to happen, everything that he was about to accept as fate. As soon as he saw those ruthless, spirited eyes meet his own. The eyes of the man who hated him more than anyone he knew.
He wondered for a second what he would do or say if he knew he was about to get his wish. he would've chuckled, if he wasn't so somber. Instead he shot a solemn smile at Shizu-Chan and nodded slightly, as they walked past him. It surprised him to see him not only not react besides a look of faint irritation, but turn away as well.
Who knew this is how his last time seeing him would go? Was this a pleasant surprise or a poor one? Who knows…and does it even matter either way. He'll soon be in a body bag floating in the Sumida river. He wondered why he reacted so differently, but guessed he would never know.
He shifted uncomfortably as Hitoshi, the man beside him shot him a look to not try anything odd, evidently noting that he had nodded at someone within the crowd but not identifying who or for what reason. Either way, this man distrusted him, for good reason, of course.
If he understood him even a little he'd realize that escaping was something he had little interest in anymore. If anything, he was a rational, pragmatic man, not one to change his mind on last minute emotional rationale, even if he was adept at adjusting to any situational changes that are often to occur. No, this was bound to happen, and he wanted to walk into death willingly. He refused to meet his end by surprise.
And maybe…just maybe, he deserved this one. He thought bitterly, he stared at the sky, enjoying the deep blues and purples as they walked out of the building and outside to the plaza. The last time he would enjoy it, he sighed softly as the group surrounding him had come to a stop just outside the building, apparently waiting for their car. He watched as one of the lower-tier men switched between debating with someone on the phone and profusely apologizing to Shiki as the stoic man looked on with indifference.
His eyes roamed around the area in bored lethargy. He almost felt disappointed, he had hoped there would be more fanfare around his death. However, it was clear Shiki and his men were going to take him somewhere quiet before taking him out. He should've expected as much, but part of him hoped for an exit with a more dramatic flair.
It was thinking of his own end, awaiting their vehicle, when just several feet away he noticed. Shizuo and Tom were there.
They must have found who they were looking for as they were engaged in a conversation with a woman.
Slowly, he found himself watching, unnoticed, with absolute fascination as he watched the men work. Shizuo looking too calm for his liking.
Really? How dull. The man really was so amazing, and yet...so boring. He found himself suddenly getting more and more irritated. The woman they spoke to was speaking quickly, evidently explaining why she was late on her debt or providing some sort of similar excuse. Shizu-chan looked on bored, not at all the monstrous expression Izaya always expected of him. It was almost insulting to see him look so human, so absolutely basic and dull, not at all the typical raging beast he had come to know. He scoffed in his head, eyes narrowing. If only he had half the strength and power of that obtuse man. The things he could've done, accomplished.
Tom was talking, Shizuo just looking on and suddenly he yawned, glancing away and directly at Izaya, whose eyes widened as they locked gazes. Izaya found himself amused by the sudden expression of unadulterated hate that appeared on that horrid face and against his own desire, found himself reacting with an amused smirk as Shizuo's tired eyes suddenly sharpened with acute focus toward his most hated enemy.
He could've just left it there. Let that be the last time he saw this brute. Remember this moment fondly, as his last day on earth. The last time he saw the monster of Ikebukuro… Really, it wouldn't have been too bad.
But something made him hesitate...and then, he decided. If his actions caused a change, then it was meant to be. If he still ended up spiraling to his death, that would be fine too. But...wouldn't it be nice to go out in a blaze of glory rather than as a streak in some dark alley? He hadn't planned on this, and yet for once, Shizu-chan showing up might actually be of help.
Taking action, he narrowed his eyes and flicked them to the right toward a pole in the center of the square. He had no idea what this would do, if anything, but the beast always seemed to read non-verbal cues better than anything he actually expressed in words. Really, he wanted to test his theory, and see, even if it was true, would he even do anything if he knew the predicament Izaya was in, or would he sit back and watch. It'd be interesting to see.
He watched as Shizuo's eyes followed his to the pole and quickly back to his with a scowl and a disgusted grimace as if repulsed that Izaya would even try to communicate something to him. Izaya felt a quick flash of fear that Shizuo would just turn away now and that would be the end of his chance, ending any further opportunity to convey any sort of message to the last person he knew as a constant in his life. Regardless of what happens, he wanted to make an honorable attempt, at least.
Instead, Shizuo kept his stare, but became more indifferent and disinterested as he narrowed his eyes with distrust.
What the fuck was up with Shizu-chan today? To be honest, Izaya didn't think this part would've been the hard part, but he seemed so unbothered with running into him here.
Ah!
That's it. Izaya's eyes widened in recognition, and he felt like chuckling when he realized why Shizuo hadn't made a move.
This was Shinjuku. Pfhh, he couldn't help a chuckled under his breath, causing an irritated clearing of the throat of Hitoshi who shot him a warning glance. Shizu-chan was really so predictable once you understood how his mind worked. He didn't see this as "his turf".
He really was like a wild, untamed animal. Izaya closed his eyes and smiled inwardly, opening them with newfound confidence. He opened them again to meet the gaze of the man who held probably the most hate for him in his heart. Sure, the men surrounding him wanted him dead too, but more out of a dutiful diligence than any real animosity.
No, this man. This fantastic creature in front of him, hated him to the core. His very essence. Every fibre of his being. He found himself smiling more and more like a madman as he smiled at Shizuo, who slowly began to bristle, just from Izaya's arrogant expression.
In his hateful attentions, he found a renewed sense of calm. Maybe this wasn't the end yet.
Ah, but alas, the car arrived. His time for departure was growing short. It was now or never.
"Goodbye Shizu-chan!" Izaya smiled gleefully, "Hope to see you in Ikebukuro soon!" Hitoshi held a knife to his back that moment, snapping under his breath, "what the fuck do you think you're doing" but he didn't care. All that he cared about was what Shizu-chan would do. And what would his reaction be.
If he stood there like the obedient dog he was, then it is what it was, and this would be his final goodbye, but if he reacted differently, then maybe-...just maybe-
IZZZAAA-YAAAA!
Izaya heart beat faster, as adrenaline shot through his veins. His booming voice startling everyone within a 10 mile radius, everyone here paled but stood still to watch curiously. No running away. They don't know him here, Izaya thought amused, or they'd be running. Still the yakuza surrounding him stopped ushering into the car as the loud voice shocked them out of their routine, and they looked back in a moment of confusion.
Izaya's eyes widened with amazement as he watched this crazy blond grab the pole he noticed earlier, and yank it out of the ground with as much ease as someone would yank out a weed from their garden. Amazing.
You're DEAD MEAT!"
At this point, the yakuza surrounding him had taken notice and had all drawn various weapons in response to the unbridled rage emerging before them. Little did they know, their weapons would mean nothing against this beast of a man. Izaya smiled. He sensed them quiver around him in fear as he ripped the base of the pole completely from the ground crumbling stones falling from the base as he whipped it around, his entire being the essence of violence and swung it to land directly in the path to Izaya. Hitoshi seemed on edge, and he felt the cold steel edge of a blade drawn closer to his back. He seemed to have rightly determined that Izaya was somehow involved with this. Well, he may be slightly correct. Izaya could easily remove the knife from his hand with this perfect distraction but he wanted to see this play out.
He smiled confidently. Shizuo's eruption of rage had put the Awakusu on edge. Quickly assessing the situation, Shiki realized who this man was and seemed to understand the situation at hand almost immediately. Before he could address it though, Hitoshi had stepped forward despite his obvious trepidation. Almost admirable against the terrifying sight that was Shizu-chan.
The pole landed square where Izaya was once standing, leaving a deep pole shaped indent in the pavement and smashing the door of the car. Causing the men to disperse, and Hitoshi to stumbled to the ground in shock. The last second, he himself had slipped to the side with a quick flash of a grin to the raging blond.
"How nice to see you on this side of town, Shizu-chan" he yelled over, "Don't you think coming here is a little much, isn't there anywhere I can go without seeing you~"
Shizuo's expression was so amusing. His face contorted with anger as he struggled to pick up the pole that had become lodged in the ground, it groaned as he attempted to pull it out, "Don't give me that crap, Izaya" He jumped across the pole as it finally released and was swung sideways. "That should be my line"
Behind him the men ducked, a few went flying with the last swing. Hitoshi spoke loudly over everyone as the pole narrowly missed taking out Shiki, who ducked, kneeling to the ground to avoid being caught in its swing.
"What do you think you're doing interfering with Awaku-su business" Hitoshi stood strongly if not slightly nervously, something Izaya noticed from this distance but doubted Shizu-chan would. Hmm...maybe this would receive a decent response. Shizuo usually responded better to head on confrontation.
"HAH?" He snapped at the man, who was now looking rather unhappy to have opened his mouth. Or not. Izaya chuckled to himself and dashed up and away to increase the distance between him and Shizuo, jumping to a nearby parked car's roof.
"This has nothing to do with you" he heard him growl indignantly "you better stay out of my way" he threatened before focusing back on his target.
"Back down, we don't need to get involved in this matter" He heard Shiki's voice reach the rest of the men picking themselves up, a mix of stunned glances at the raging man with a few tired expressions, some of them had clearly encountered Shizuo before.
"Where the fuck do you think YOU'RE GOING!?" And with that Shizu-chan launched the pole like a javelin. Izaya watched with unrestrained glee as it went soaring past him as he spun out of the way, watching it spear another vehicle just behind the one he perched atop.
He smiled, turning around to cock his head to the side, "Did you really miss me that much you had to visit me in Shinjuku, Shizu-chan?"
"Shut the FUCK UP AND GET OUT OF HERE" As quick as the words left the words left his mouth he was in pursuit. Izaya's grin stretched wider and a laugh slipped his lips before turning to run off.
Seems fate had decided.
Lessss go ;)
