Chapter Extra Episode -Field Trip 3
The Next Morning at Shiga Kogen
The morning sunlight at Shiga Kogen was as bright as ever, but the ski resort was bustling with some new and exciting arrangements today. The six of us decided to try something different and explore snow activities that required teamwork.
"Let's go sledding today!" Momoko suggested excitedly, her eyes shining with anticipation.
"Sledding?" I raised an eyebrow, looking at her curiously. "That doesn't sound like something you'd usually enjoy."
"Hmph, just watch! I'll show you that my sense of balance is top-notch!" Momoko put her hands on her hips, her voice full of confidence. I couldn't help but laugh; her stubborn expression always made her look adorable.
We split into three teams: Shigeru and Kaoru, Kagami and Miyako, and Momoko and me. Each team had a sled, and we raced down a winding snow-covered slope. The pine trees on either side of the path were blanketed with thick snow, making the scenery as beautiful as a traditional Japanese ink painting.
"Ready?" Shigeru asked, sitting on the sled and glancing back at Kaoru, a mischievous smile on his face.
"Of course!" Kaoru playfully patted his back. "You'd better not lose to me, or you're buying dinner tonight!"
"I don't want to go bankrupt!" Shigeru laughed heartily, giving a strong push, and the two of them sped down the hill. Kaoru, sitting behind him, laughed mischievously and occasionally rocked the sled to make it hard for Shigeru to steer.
On the other side, Kagami and Miyako had a slower start. Miyako gripped the edges of the sled nervously, her face full of worry. "Kagami, are you sure… this won't go too fast?"
"Don't worry, Miyako," Kagami said softly, turning back to her with a gentle smile as warm as the sunlight. "I'm here with you, and nothing will happen to you."
But as soon as their sled took off, Miyako's nerves caused them to crash into a small snowbank, flipping the sled over. The two of them tumbled into the snow, their laughter and surprised shouts mixing together. Fortunately, Kagami had protected Miyako, so neither of them was hurt, only covered in snow.
"Maybe we should switch to a different activity," Miyako said with a laugh, wiping snow off her face and looking sheepishly at Kagami.
Meanwhile, Momoko and I chose a relatively flat slope. Despite Momoko's earlier confidence in her ability to keep the sled steady, she suddenly yelled, "Yuzuhiko, turn! Turn now!"
"I can't! This sled won't turn!" I laughed as we careened toward a small snow ramp, flying into the air. I quickly pulled Momoko into my arms to protect her from getting hurt. We landed in the snow, rolling over a few times, and the flurry of snowflakes around us mixed with Momoko's laughter and screams, filling me with a warm, happy feeling.
The morning passed in a blur of laughter and joy. As noon approached, we decided to head into the Shiga Kogen mountains for a picnic. We packed some light gear and prepared to drive deeper into the wilderness.
We drove slowly into the mountains of Shiga Kogen, leaving behind the hustle and bustle of the ski resort and entering a tranquil, pristine snow forest. Snowflakes gently fell on the car windows, and the landscape turned into a breathtakingly white wonderland. The snow-covered ground sparkled in the sunlight, and the pine trees, clad in silver, stood silently among the hills. The winding mountain roads revealed increasingly magnificent views as we drove along.
Momoko was driving, and to my surprise, she handled the snowy mountain roads with impressive skill and confidence. Sitting in the passenger seat, I guided her and admired the magical snowy landscape. The others chatted and laughed in the back, creating a lively and cheerful atmosphere. After nearly an hour's drive, we arrived at the secluded valley we had chosen for our picnic.
"We're here!" Momoko announced joyfully. We got out of the car and took in the crisp, refreshing air of the valley. It was like a hidden paradise, surrounded by snow-covered cliffs and a vast, pure white expanse that exuded serenity.
We laid out our picnic mats on a flat patch of snow, arranging the bento boxes and warm drinks we had brought, ready to enjoy a wonderful moment together. The girls proudly presented the special bentos they had prepared for us, smiling and saying, "It's New Year's, so of course, we have to eat well!"
I eagerly opened the bento Momoko had made. Inside were beautifully arranged fried chicken, tempura, and rice topped with pickled plums. The meticulous presentation made me stare in admiration. Momoko smiled brightly and asked, "Do you like it? I put a lot of effort into making it."
I felt a warm sensation in my chest and nodded with a smile. "Anything you make, I'll always love!"
Shigeru and Kaoru sat nearby. Kaoru opened her bento box and found a carefully crafted sushi platter, eel tamagoyaki, and fresh lettuce leaves. Her eyes widened in surprise. "You made this?!"
Shigeru rubbed the back of his head, a slight blush spreading across his face. "Yeah… I thought it would make our picnic more enjoyable."
Kaoru tasted the bento and couldn't stop praising it, and Shigeru looked at her with a tender smile.
On the other side, Kagami and Miyako sat on their picnic mat. Kagami opened the bento Miyako had made for him, which included a large piece of saikyo-yaki, simmered vegetables, and hot miso soup. He looked at Miyako, his face full of gratitude. "This bento isn't just beautiful, it's so heartwarming."
Miyako lowered her head with a shy smile. "I remember you said you loved saikyo-yaki when you were in Kyoto, so I made it for you. Is it to your taste?"
Kagami nodded enthusiastically. "It's perfect. Thank you so much!"
The six of us enjoyed our bentos while chatting and laughing, the serene snow-covered surroundings making our conversation feel even more relaxed and genuine.
"I'm so glad we came to Shiga Kogen this time!" Momoko said with a smile, putting down her chopsticks. "It's been so long since we had such a fun picnic."
"Yeah, spending New Year's like this is amazing," Kaoru agreed, nodding.
Shigeru added, "Especially in a place like this, it feels like we're in our own little world, far away from everything." Everyone nodded in agreement. The tranquil snow valley felt like our private haven, bringing a sense of peace and comfort.
Our lunch gradually came to an end, and we were all satisfied and happy. Just as we were getting ready to pack up our picnic mats and bento boxes, a deep rumbling echoed from the distant cliffs, followed by vibrations. We all turned around in shock and saw a massive avalanche cascading down!
The roaring sound grew louder as the wall of snow surged down the mountain, a terrifying white wave enveloping everything in its path.
My heart sank, and I realized that the situation was far more dangerous than I had imagined. Running back to the car was impossible, so we had no choice but to run in the opposite direction and find shelter.
"Run! Don't stop!" I shouted to everyone, nearly slipping on the snow but managing to keep my balance. Shigeru and Kagami quickly understood the urgency and led the girls toward a small mountain hut in the distance.
As we ran, Miyako and Kaoru suddenly lost their footing in the deep snow and fell. Kaoru let out a small cry as she hit the ground, and Miyako was shocked as snow immediately covered their hands and legs. They shivered from the cold, clearly frightened.
"Kaoru!" Shigeru's eyes flashed with determination. He rushed over without hesitation and gently but swiftly lifted Kaoru into his arms, holding her close. His voice was filled with resolve and protection. "I'll get you to safety. Trust me!" Kaoru, pale from the cold and the shock, nodded weakly in his warm embrace.
Kagami almost flew over to Miyako, scooping her up like the most precious treasure, his movements gentle but quick. "Miyako, hold on tight! Don't worry, I'll keep you safe!" Miyako's eyes held a flicker of surprise and embarrassment, but now wasn't the time for shyness. She clung to Kagami's jacket, trembling, and nodded.
I ran alongside them, feeling relieved that these two clumsy guys had enough strength to carry the girls. The avalanche roared closer, and the snow under our feet was becoming increasingly unstable, but we kept pushing forward, racing toward the small cabin.
"We're almost there! Keep going!" I shouted, urging everyone to keep moving. I knew that any pause could lead to disaster. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Momoko right beside me, her cheeks flushed red from the cold, but she bit her lip and kept running, refusing to slow down.
Finally, at the last moment, we reached the mountain hut. I quickly slammed the door shut and secured the wooden latch, breathing heavily as I turned to make sure everyone was safe.
The blizzard roared outside, slamming against the walls of the cabin with a force that sent shivers down my spine. The snowy landscape had turned into a terrifying, swirling white storm, and it was clear how close we had come to danger.
I pulled out waterproof matches and lit the fireplace, and the flames quickly sprang to life, chasing away some of the cold. But even with the fire, Kaoru and Miyako were shivering uncontrollably, their soaked clothes making their bodies dangerously cold.
"What are you guys waiting for? Get their wet clothes off!" I shouted at Shigeru and Kagami. They exchanged a quick, embarrassed look, their cheeks flushing red, but they knew there was no time to be bashful.
Shigeru had brought two ultra-warm, lightweight blankets, handing one to Kagami and wrapping the other around himself and Kaoru.
Kagami knelt beside Miyako, his face flushed, and said gently, "Miyako, we need to get your wet clothes off to prevent hypothermia. Please let me help you." His voice trembled slightly, but his eyes were filled with worry and care.
Miyako looked up at him, her whole body shaking but managing a faint smile. Her expression hinted at something deeper, and her voice was weak but teasing. "Haha, Kagami… You finally get to do this, huh? Just remember, only you are allowed to touch me like this…" Her words carried a hint of possessiveness, making Kagami's face turn even redder.
Kagami clumsily helped her remove her soaked jacket and outerwear, leaving her in her undergarments before wrapping her tightly in the blanket. He held her close, trying to warm her with his body heat. Miyako leaned into his embrace, whispering softly, "Kagami, don't ever leave me, okay?"
On the other side, Shigeru's face was just as red as he looked at Kaoru. He took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. "Kaoru, you have to change out of your wet clothes. It'll keep you warmer… I'll help you, okay?"
Kaoru's face turned bright red, and she crossed her arms over her chest, looking away with a mix of embarrassment and defiance. "Who gave you permission to touch my clothes?! Ugh, fine… but only because it's an emergency!" Her tone was full of reluctance, but her eyes couldn't hide the trust she had in him.
Shigeru awkwardly removed her outerwear, leaving her in her undergarments, and wrapped her securely in the blanket. He held her gently, whispering, "Don't worry, you'll be warm soon." Kaoru blushed even more but muttered stubbornly, "Don't get too full of yourself; this is a one-time thing… Got it?"
As I stoked the fireplace with more wood, I quickly turned my head away, avoiding the awkward scenes. My face burned, and I silently thanked myself for looking away in time, sparing the girls from having a reason to scold me.
Meanwhile, Momoko rummaged through the small, rustic kitchen of the cabin, finding some canned goods and simple ingredients. "I'll make some hot soup to warm everyone up!" she said confidently, getting to work right away. I walked over to help her light the gas stove, and the flames added a bit more warmth to the chilly kitchen.
Momoko opened a few cans, including chicken broth, corn, and diced potatoes. She poured the broth into a pot, added the corn and potatoes, and seasoned it with salt and pepper, letting the soup bubble and release a comforting aroma. The hot soup filled the cabin with warmth, easing some of the tension.
"The soup's ready!" Momoko said, serving it in bowls and passing them around. We gathered around the fireplace, sipping the hot soup and feeling the warmth spread through our bodies, chasing away the cold.
The fire crackled steadily in the fireplace, filling the cabin with a sense of warmth and safety. Yet, we all knew that the situation outside was still dire.
I pulled out my phone and checked again; there was still no signal. Despite that, a disaster alert notification popped up on the screen: Blizzard Warning, expected to last until late at night, with conditions improving by the morning.
"It looks like this storm won't let up anytime soon," I sighed, showing everyone the alert on my phone. "We'll have to stay here until at least tomorrow morning."
Momoko frowned but then smiled resolutely. "Well, there's nothing we can do about it. We'll just have to make the best of it. We have a fire and blankets, so we should be okay."
I glanced out the window, watching the snow fall relentlessly and the wind howl against the walls of the cabin. Despite the danger, the presence of my friends brought me a sense of comfort.
Kaoru sat beside Shigeru, wrapped in the ultra-warm blanket, still trembling a bit. She tried to sound tough. "Hmph, this blizzard is nothing… but if you held me tighter, maybe I'd feel a little warmer."
Her voice was tinged with tsundere defiance, but her eyes showed her trust and reliance.
Shigeru blushed but gently pulled her closer, whispering, "Don't worry, I'll keep you warm and safe." His voice was soft but carried a reassuring strength.
Meanwhile, Kagami held Miyako close, looking at her with concern. "Miyako, are you feeling any better? Is the warmth helping?" His hand rested gently on her back, trying to share his body heat.
Miyako's cheeks were pale from the cold, but she looked up at Kagami with a playful, slightly weak smile. "Kagami… you have to keep holding me, or else I won't forgive you if I get cold again." Her voice had a hint of teasing, but there was an undeniable trust in her eyes.
Momoko clung to my arm, her voice soft and warm. "This feels a bit like that night in Kyoto when we watched the stars, doesn't it? We were depending on each other back then, too."
Her smile warmed me, and I couldn't help but smile back. "Yeah, our bond was already strong then. Even though we're facing this blizzard now, we'll get through it together."
Momoko's smile grew brighter. "Exactly. We've overcome so many challenges before. Compared to facing Yomi and all that, this blizzard is nothing."
Huddled together by the fireplace, we shared warmth, the girls' soft breaths close enough to feel. Despite the intimacy, the three of us boys kept our behavior perfectly respectful, simply cherishing the closeness without any other thoughts.
Momoko fell asleep against me, her breathing gentle and rhythmic, and I could feel her warmth through our clothes. I stayed alert, keeping calm despite my racing heart. Kaoru murmured softly in her sleep, making Shigeru blush all night. Meanwhile, Kagami cradled Miyako, who snuggled up like a contented kitten, completely at peace.
4:30 AM: I checked the time on my iPhone and carefully slipped out of Momoko's embrace, trying not to wake her. I stretched quietly, and Kagami and Shigeru did the same, exchanging a knowing look. We knew it was still bitterly cold and that we needed to conserve energy for whatever lay ahead.
We crept to the door and turned on our phone flashlights, surveying the outside for a way to escape. My heart sank when I saw that the door was nearly buried in snow and ice. The snow was piled frighteningly high, and through the flashlight beams, I could see the thick layer of ice glistening coldly. The snow had accumulated to nearly two meters deep, and getting out seemed impossible.
Kagami, standing beside me, frowned and touched the hilt of his katana as if contemplating something. "I could try cutting through the ice with my sword… but snow isn't solid enough to slice through. Even if we clear the ice, we'd have to deal with this loose snow, which is hard to clear efficiently."
He made a valid point, and I thought for a moment. Just then, I noticed a wooden box covered with a thick black cloth in the cabin's corner. Following my gut feeling, I walked over and lifted the cloth, revealing something quite surprising.
"Hey, look at this!" I called Kagami and Shigeru over, pointing at the contents of the box in shock.
Inside were neatly arranged professional tools: detonators, fuses, explosives, safety helmets, goggles, earplugs, surveying instruments, and a few snow shovels. It looked like equipment for snow blasting operations. I froze for a moment, and an idea immediately popped into my head.
"These things…" Shigeru's eyes widened with surprise. "Was this cabin used by a snow blasting team or something?"
I nodded, feeling a mix of relief and unease. These were not the kind of things just anyone could handle. Fortunately, we had some experience with dangerous tasks from our high school days when we were even recruited by the Japanese government for some classified missions.
We had learned quite a bit about explosives and demolition, though we had never told the girls, not wanting to worry them.
"Well, this is getting interesting. These explosives and detonators might be our way out," I said, a mischievous grin spreading across my face. "Of course, it's risky, but it could be our only option."
Kagami and Shigeru nodded in agreement. Kagami sighed lightly. "Let's hope we can handle this… but we can't let the girls know, or they'll freak out."
Just as we were discussing our plan in hushed voices around the box, three familiar voices rang out behind us, curious and slightly suspicious.
"What are you guys up to?" Momoko's voice had a tone of curiosity mixed with suspicion.
"What's in that box?" Miyako's voice was gentle but firm, making it hard to avoid the question.
I gulped and quickly straightened up like a child caught doing something wrong. Kaoru looked at us with a skeptical expression, clearly not buying our act.
"Uh… well…" I stammered, feeling my heart race as the girls' expectant eyes bore into me.
"It's just… emergency equipment," Kagami tried to smile innocently, his voice forcedly casual. "Nothing special, really."
The girls were not easily fooled. Miyako raised an eyebrow, clearly sensing we were hiding something. "Equipment? What kind of equipment? Kagami, you know we shouldn't keep secrets from each other, right?"
The three of us instinctively took a step back, exchanging nervous glances as the girls stared us down with suspicious eyes.
"It's really just… um, special tools for emergencies," Shigeru said with a forced laugh, scratching his head awkwardly. But his expression only made the girls even more suspicious.
Kaoru stepped forward and reached for the box lid. "Let me see what this 'emergency equipment' is—"
"Wait, hold on!" We shouted in unison, but our reaction only made us look guiltier. Kaoru stopped, and Momoko and Miyako's eyes narrowed, demanding answers.
"Honestly, we're not children who don't understand danger," Miyako said gently but firmly.
Realizing we had no choice, I sighed and came clean. "Okay… there are indeed some special items in here, like… blasting tools. Detonators, fuses, that sort of thing."
The girls stared at us in stunned silence for a few seconds. Kaoru's eyebrows shot up, her face full of shock. "Blasting tools? Are you planning to blow up a mountain or something?!"
Momoko looked at me in disbelief. "Yuzuhiko, is this your plan?"
I gave a sheepish smile and explained, "We just need a way to clear the snow blocking the door. It's too deep and solid to clear by hand."
The girls exchanged shocked and skeptical glances, clearly finding the situation hard to believe.
"So your plan is to use explosives?" Miyako asked, looking both surprised and exasperated.
Kaoru crossed her arms, still skeptical. "But you're all from the Faculty of Law, Faculty of Letters and Business School, right? None of you should know how to handle explosives!"
Momoko's expression was full of concern and confusion. "Yuzuhiko, you're a law student! Where did you learn this?"
I rubbed the back of my head and laughed nervously. "Well, besides law courses at the University of Tokyo, I took some elective classes in the Faculty of Engineering. You know, just in case of emergencies like this. It's good to have some practical skills."
Momoko raised an eyebrow, still doubtful. "So you're telling me a law student somehow learned how to blow up mountains?"
I tried to sound casual, despite my racing heart. "Uh, yeah… it's a side skill. Better to be prepared than stuck here with no options, right?"
Shigeru stepped in to back me up. "Momoko, it's true! I've seen Yuzuhiko spending time in the Faculty of Engineering. He really did study hard to learn this stuff, and he's not lying."
"Oh?" Kaoru still looked unconvinced. "How does a Literature major like you know about this?"
Shigeru shrugged. "I don't know all the details, but I know Yuzuhiko has a wide range of interests, and he really knows his stuff."
Miyako turned her gaze to Kagami, puzzled and exasperated. "And you, Kagami? How does a Business major know about this?"
Kagami smiled sheepishly. "Actually, I never mentioned it, but I took some courses in the School of Creative Science and Engineering at Waseda. I learned about surveying tools, and those skills come in handy for operations like this. But don't worry, we'll be very careful."
Miyako sighed, her face still full of doubt. "So now you're all engineering experts?"
Kagami blushed and replied, "Not experts, but we have enough basic knowledge to handle this safely."
Momoko and Miyako exchanged wary glances. Momoko poked my forehead gently, her tone worried. "Yuzuhiko, you guys are crazy… but if this is our only way out, we'll have to trust you. But! Be extra careful, got it?"
Kaoru crossed her arms and gave Shigeru a suspicious look. "Are you sure this won't blow us all up?"
Shigeru raised his hands in mock surrender. "Of course not! We'll be extremely cautious. Trust us, we're your protectors, after all!"
Kaoru sighed, finally nodding. "Fine… I'll trust you this once."
The three of us exchanged relieved glances, grateful that we had managed to convince the girls, even if just barely. Now we had to make sure our plan worked without a hitch, or we'd be in serious trouble.
While Shigeru and I set up the explosives, Kagami held surveying tools and a hand-drawn map, deep in concentration. Miyako bit her lip, looking worried.
She glanced at the equipment in Kagami's hands and seemed uncertain.
"Can I really do this?" Miyako asked softly. "This is explosives and detonators… my experience is only with fabric and stitches. If I miscalculate, I'll endanger everyone."
Kagami immediately put down his tools and walked over to her, taking her hands in his. His voice was earnest and reassuring. "Miyako, you're the only one who can do this. You're the most precise person we know, and your instincts have always been right."
The rest of us couldn't help but tease them. "Hey, hey, Kagami, are you flirting now?" I said loudly, pretending to shield my eyes.
Shigeru laughed. "Kagami, this isn't the time for a love confession, but it seems to be working!"
Kaoru crossed her arms, rolling her eyes playfully. "Seriously, even in a crisis, you two manage to be lovey-dovey."
Miyako blushed, but the warmth of Kagami's hands gave her confidence. She took a deep breath and nodded. "Okay… I'll do my best." She looked at me, still a bit embarrassed but with newfound determination.
Momoko joined in, giving Miyako a supportive smile. "Miyako, you can do it. We believe in you. And we'll all work together, just like we always have."
Miyako took a moment to look at everyone, then steadied herself. She picked up the surveying tools and paper, working with Kagami to calculate the exact amount of explosives and the angle of the fuses.
Despite our joking and light-hearted teasing, we all knew the seriousness of the situation. We had to act quickly and carefully.
In the meantime, Momoko and I distributed the explosives at designated spots. Momoko used her phone to time the wind gusts, making calculations with practiced gestures. "I think this is the best time to detonate. The wind will briefly weaken, clearing the snow more efficiently." She looked at me confidently, her eyes full of focus.
I nodded, impressed. "Momoko, you're amazing. Not everyone has such good intuition for timing."
Momoko blushed at the compliment but couldn't hide her pride. "Well, of course! I'm a professional baker, after all." She stuck out her tongue playfully, lightening the tense atmosphere a bit.
Meanwhile, Shigeru and Kaoru worked together to move the equipment. Shigeru's strength was impressive, effortlessly carrying the heavy tools, while Kaoru used a shovel to dig a path for the explosives.
She grumbled as she worked, "I thought this trip was just about skiing, but now we're doing snow blasting… this is way too much."
Shigeru chuckled. "Next time, we'll have a more relaxing vacation. But as long as you're with me, I'm not afraid of anything."
Kaoru paused, her ears turning red. She looked away, muttering, "Don't say stuff like that! Who wants to go on adventures with you?"
Once everything was set, we retreated to a safe distance. Momoko looked at me, her eyes steady. "Ready?"
I took a deep breath and exchanged a determined look with everyone. "Ready."
Momoko started the timer, and we all held our breath, waiting for the explosion.
The fuse lit, sparks racing along the line. We exchanged one last look before running to our safe spot. Our footsteps crunched through the snow, and the air felt electric with tension. Momoko glanced at me nervously. "Are you sure this will work?"
I gave her a confident smile, even though I was nervous too. "It will. Your timing is perfect."
The fuse reached the explosives, and we heard a faint "pop," followed by—
"BOOM!" The explosion shook the valley, and the snow erupted in all directions, a cloud of white dust and snowflakes billowing up. The ground trembled slightly.
"We did it!" Kagami shouted in excitement, his eyes shining.
Miyako patted his shoulder, smiling. "Our calculations were right after all!"
As the snow cloud cleared, a narrow path emerged through the piled snow. It was still covered in thick snow but passable enough for us to escape. Shigeru clapped me and Kagami on the back, grinning. "Looks like our hard work paid off."
Kaoru let out a breath, half amazed and half in disbelief. "I can't believe it actually worked… even though I still can't believe you guys thought of this."
Momoko smirked. "Next time, use a more normal method, okay? But we definitely learned something new today."
I laughed awkwardly, scratching my head. "What can I say? We have to think creatively when the situation calls for it, right?"
We all shared a smile. As the path opened up before us, we felt like we had conquered a shared adventure, our trust and teamwork stronger than ever.
After a ten-minute hike, we finally saw our RAV4. Thankfully, it hadn't been buried by the avalanche. As we loaded up and prepared to leave this dangerous place, a shrill alarm suddenly went off on all six of our phones simultaneously.
We froze for a second, quickly pulling out our phones to see giant letters flashing on the screen: "Disaster Alert: Avalanche Warning!"
My heart leaped into my throat, and I turned to see the mountain behind us rumbling. A massive wave of snow was rushing down, as overwhelming as a tsunami.
"Get in the car!" Kaoru screamed, leaping into the driver's seat. Her sudden action snapped us out of our shock, and we scrambled into the RAV4.
I barely managed to throw myself into the back seat, and before I could even buckle up, Kaoru floored the gas pedal, and the RAV4 shot forward like an arrow.
Shigeru, sitting in the passenger seat, quickly helped her buckle her seatbelt, his voice urgent. "Your seatbelt! Safety first!"
In the back, Kagami and I hurriedly buckled up Momoko and Miyako.
Momoko clung to my arm, her eyes wide with fear. "Are we really going to make it?" she whispered, her voice trembling.
I tried to keep my voice steady, even though my hands were shaking. "Yes, just trust me. You're safe."
Kaoru's hands were steady on the wheel, but her eyes were sharp and focused, like a hawk's.
"Hold on tight!" she yelled, and our RAV4 became part of a high-stakes race for survival. She skillfully maneuvered through falling snow and rocks, her driving as sharp as a professional racer's.
I never imagined a RAV4 could drift, but Kaoru pulled off a perfect drift around an icy corner. Snow and rocks crashed down around us, narrowly missing the car by mere centimeters.
"Holy crap, RAV4 can drift?!" Shigeru shouted, wide-eyed with disbelief.
Momoko clung to my arm, her voice high-pitched with fear. "Kaoru, are you the female Dom Toretto from Fast & Furious?! You're going to give me a heart attack!"
Miyako's eyes were wide, her voice small. "How is this even possible? Are we really going to survive?"
Kagami watched in horror as a massive chunk of snow narrowly missed us. "Kaoru… you're driving like your life depends on it!"
Kaoru gritted her teeth, her face a mask of determination. "Trust me! We'll get out of this!" Her voice was steady, and her hands never wavered as she expertly navigated through the danger.
Finally, we burst out of the avalanche's path, and Kaoru brought the RAV4 to a stop. The car was filled with our heavy, relieved breathing.
"Are we… are we alive?" Momoko asked, her voice shaking.
Shigeru wiped sweat from his forehead. "Kaoru, you're incredible."
Kaoru let out a shaky laugh, her hands still gripping the wheel. "I almost scared myself to death."
We all looked at each other and burst into relieved laughter, the tension melting away. We knew we had just survived something truly harrowing, but together, we could face anything.
Back at the lodge, we stumbled inside, exhausted and grateful to be safe. The sight of steaming hotpot on the table felt like a dream, and we eagerly sat down to eat, famished and ready to feast.
Momoko teased me, placing a piece of beef in my bowl. "Seriously, Yuzuhiko, how do you guys always manage to get into these wild situations? First, it was armed terrorists at the amusement park, and now an avalanche. Are you guys cursed or something?"
I laughed, shaking my head. "Hey, it's not our fault! It's like fate has a sense of humor and keeps throwing us into chaos."
Miyako stirred the vegetables in the hotpot, smiling. "It's always thrilling and crazy with you guys. I wonder what other adventures we'll have in the future."
Kaoru grinned, narrowing her eyes at Shigeru. "When we get married, will our lives be like this too? Constantly preparing for more 'special adventures'?"
My face turned bright red, and I almost dropped my chopsticks. "M-Married?! That's so sudden!" I glanced at Momoko, who was also blushing, but her smile was so warm it made my heart race.
Momoko leaned her chin on her hand, her eyes soft and warm. "Yuzuhiko, if we do get married, I hope you'll always protect me like you did today… but maybe without the constant danger?"
My heart swelled with emotion, and I whispered, "I promise. No matter what happens, I'll always protect you."
Kagami blushed as well, looking at Miyako with a shy smile. "Miyako, I'll always be there to keep you safe, no matter the danger."
Miyako smiled back, her eyes full of trust and a hint of mischief. "I believe you, but be careful and don't act recklessly, okay?"
Kaoru folded her arms and smirked at Shigeru. "Shigeru, you always seem so calm, but you surprise me with your strength when it counts. Just don't scare me like that too often!"
Shigeru scratched his head, his smile gentle. "You're the most important person to me. I'd do anything for you."
Kaoru blushed even more but looked satisfied. "Hmph, don't disappoint me then."
The hotpot's steam swirled around us, warming our hearts. Despite the terrifying avalanche, we knew that as long as we were together, no challenge or danger could break us.
Our shared laughter and the warmth of our bond would always see us through.
