Episode 1.4: Void of the Golden Pearl
Budapest Docks, Year 2000
The dock was eerily silent after Seema's voice faded, the rippling waves barely audible over the heavy tension between the two groups. Both teams stared each other down, the glowing gemstones in their possession casting ominous colors across their determined faces. The sigil beneath the water pulsed faintly, a rhythmic beacon of their next challenge—and a bitter reminder that only one group would move forward.
"Are we really going to do this?" Blair asked, stepping forward and gripping her weapon tightly. Her rebellious tone held a hint of uncertainty, her gaze flickering between the opposing team and her own. "We've been through hell, and now she expects us to fight each other?"
"She's testing us," Carmine said, her voice sharp but calm. "She wants to see which of us deserves to go on."
"Or she just likes to watch people suffer," Declan muttered nervously, adjusting his grip on his weapon. His normally cheerful demeanor was replaced with hesitation, his steps faltering. "This is insane. What if this ruins everything? We're supposed to be in this together, right?"
"We don't have a choice," Ashe said quietly, his voice unusually soft as he glanced at Declan. He placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "I don't like this either, but if we hesitate now, we'll lose everything we've worked for."
On the other side, AJ held the ruby high, its light casting crimson streaks across his face. "I don't want to fight you guys, but we're not giving up the chance to finish this. We've earned it just as much as you have."
Xerxes stood beside him, the topaz glowing faintly in his hand. His stance was tense but ready, his hawk-like gaze fixed on the opposition. "We can settle this quickly," he said. "The stronger team goes forward. Simple."
Elisia sighed, gripping her makeshift weapon. "This is like trying to cook a meal with spoiled ingredients," she muttered. "Nothing good will come of this, but we still have to serve it anyway."
"I'd rather not be the main course," Derek quipped nervously, though his hand tightened around his weapon. "Let's make this quick."
Naila smirked, her chaotic energy practically crackling in the air. "Oh, this is going to be fun," she said, glancing at Ingrid. "Ready to show them what we're made of?"
"Let's just get it over with," Ingrid replied, her tone low and grim as she adjusted her grip on her garden shears.
The two teams surged forward, their hesitation swallowed by the heat of battle. The sound of clashing weapons and shouting filled the air as they fought for control of the four glowing gemstones.
Carmine took the lead, her movements swift and calculated. She clashed with Xerxes, who fought back with equal ferocity, the topaz and sapphire glowing between them like living flames. "You're not getting this," he growled, blocking her strike. Carmine smirked. "We'll see about that."
Ashe moved cautiously but with precision, his eyes scanning the battlefield as he fought off Angie's swift strikes. "I don't want to hurt you," he said, his voice tinged with worry. "But we need those stones."
"Then you'd better start trying," Angie snapped, her prideful determination shining through as she pressed him further.
Declan stayed back at first, his hands trembling as he gripped his weapon. "This isn't right," he muttered to himself, dodging a sudden attack from Naila, who laughed as she lunged toward him. "Too slow!" she teased.
"Declan, focus!" Blair shouted, blocking a strike from Evan as she fought nearby. "You can't freeze up now!"
Humbert and Mike fought side by side, their teamwork keeping AJ and Ian at bay. "We're not letting them win," Mike said firmly, deflecting a blow aimed at Humbert.
AJ fought with everything he had, the ruby glowing brightly in his grasp. "This isn't just about the gemstones," he said, his voice resolute. "It's about proving we can handle what's ahead."
Zuni darted through the chaos, her movements as fluid as her dancing. She targeted Caren, who held the emerald protectively. "I'm sorry!" Zuni said, lunging forward. "But we need that!"
Caren barely dodged in time, gripping the gemstone tightly. "You'll have to try harder than that," she replied, her voice shaking but determined.
Meanwhile, Elisia and Claudia faced off in a battle of wits and speed. "You're overcooking this!" Elisia shouted, deflecting Claudia's strikes with surprising agility. "Time to turn down the heat!"
Claudia giggled, her quirky energy undeterred. "The midnight moonlight is certainly gorgeous tonight."
As the fight raged on, both teams began to feel the strain. Weapons clashed, strategies shifted, and the gemstones changed hands multiple times. Declan, despite his initial hesitation, finally found his footing. He managed to disarm Ian with a swift move, his expression a mix of relief and disbelief. "I… I did it," he muttered.
Ashe caught sight of Declan's victory and allowed himself a brief smile. "Good job. Now keep it up."
Carmine managed to wrestle the topaz from Xerxes, while Blair retrieved the ruby from AJ with a daring maneuver. One by one, the gemstones fell into Team One's hands.
With the sapphire, emerald, ruby, and topaz in their possession, Team One regrouped, their collective determination overpowering the second team. The light of the gemstones grew brighter, casting an almost blinding glow across the docks.
Team Two fell back, exhausted and outmatched. AJ clenched his fists, frustration evident on his face. "This isn't over," he said, his voice low but steady.
"It is for now," Ashe said, his tone firm but not unkind. He glanced at Declan, whose nervous energy had subsided into quiet determination. "Let's move."
As Team One turned toward the glowing sigil, the shimmering light of the gemstones began to resonate with the underwater chamber below, signaling the next phase of their journey. Team 2 watched in silence, the weight of defeat heavy in the air.
The group stood on the dock's edge, staring at the glowing gemstones in Carmine's hands. Their radiance pulsed steadily, casting golden reflections onto the water below. Behind them, Team Two watched silently, their expressions ranging from concern to frustration.
Seema's voice cut through the still air, commanding and cold. "Team One, the gemstones have chosen you. You will be the ones to dive into the depths and retrieve the Golden Pearl. Team Two will remain here."
Ian's jaw tightened, his hand hovering near his weapon. "Why do they get to go?" he muttered under his breath. Xerxes frowned but said nothing, his gaze flickering toward the water.
Angie crossed her arms, her voice low and tense. "Let them have their chance. We'll get ours if they fail."
Evan adjusted his hat, mumbling to himself about "arbitrary rituals" as he scribbled notes in his journal. Ingrid, meanwhile, gave the first group a small wave. "Umm, good luck. Try not to drown."
"Thanks for the vote of confidence," Capone called back, smirking. He flicked a coin into the air and caught it. "Alright, folks, let's get this over with."
Carmine secured the gemstones in a waterproof pouch at her waist and turned to the others. "Stay together and watch each other's backs. This isn't a stroll through the castle."
"Noted," Claudia replied dryly, checking the straps on her bag. "Let's hope we're better at swimming than banter."
Declan fidgeted with his diving mask, his hands trembling slightly. "Water… dark depths… ancient chambers... nothing terrifying about that," he muttered.
Ashe placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "You'll be okay, Declan. Just stick close to me, okay?"
Mike gave Declan a nod. "Focus on breathing, stick with Ashe and keep calm. You've got this."
Blair adjusted her mask, her expression determined. "Let's move before we lose the light."
"Don't lag behind," Setsuna added, tightening her hair into a bun. "The faster we do this, the faster we're out."
Humbert adjusted the straps on his oxygen tank, his towering frame making the gear look almost comically small. "I've got the rear. Let's do this."
With one final glance toward the water, all ten members of Team One plunged in, disappearing beneath the surface.
Underwater, Year 2000, Team 1
The water was shockingly cold, wrapping around them like an icy shroud. The gemstones in Carmine's pouch glowed brightly, their colors cutting through the dark, murky depths. Bubbles rose and danced around them as they adjusted to the sensation of swimming.
Blair took the lead, her powerful strokes steady and deliberate as she guided the group. Setsuna followed closely, her movements precise and fluid, gliding through the water like she belonged there.
Capone swam on his back for a moment, his lips twitching in a half-grin as he kicked lazily. "This is either the stupidest thing we've done or the coolest," he thought to himself, his eyes darting between the glowing gemstones and the shadows ahead.
Caren stayed near the middle, her strokes even but slow, her focus entirely on the distant structure that was beginning to take shape in the depths. Claudia swam beside her, her movements calm and deliberate, her eyes constantly scanning the surroundings for potential dangers.
Carmine clutched the gemstone pouch tightly, her eyes fixed ahead. She gestured toward the structure, pointing out the faint outline of an ancient stone archway shrouded in coral and seaweed.
Humbert swam steadily at the back, his large frame plowing through the water like a protective anchor. He kept an eye on Declan, who struggled to maintain a smooth rhythm, his kicks uneven and his arms flailing slightly.
Mike noticed Declan's difficulty and swam closer, gesturing for him to calm down. Declan gave a shaky nod, his breaths coming in bursts through his regulator as he tried to keep up. Ashe stayed close to Declan's other side, offering silent reassurance with a steadying hand.
The team approached the stone archway, its surface etched with intricate carvings that glowed faintly as they neared. The gemstones in Carmine's pouch pulsed brighter, their light reflecting off the carvings.
Blair gestured for everyone to stop and regroup. The team hovered in the water, exchanging nods as Carmine swam to the front. Carefully, she retrieved the gemstones and placed them into grooves etched into the archway.
One by one, the gemstones slid into place. The carvings flared with a brilliant light, the colors merging into a radiant gold. The archway trembled, and the heavy stone doors began to slide open with a deep rumble, releasing a swirl of bubbles and light.
The team exchanged glances, their expressions a mixture of awe and determination. Ashe gestured toward the opening, leading the way as they swam through the glowing entrance and into the unknown depths of the underwater chamber.
As Team One swam through the massive stone doorway, the underwater chamber stretched out before them, vast and impossibly beautiful. The walls were lined with shimmering, iridescent coral and bioluminescent plants, casting an ethereal glow over the surroundings. The air, though thick with water, seemed to hum with ancient power, and the faint sound of something beyond echoed through the chamber.
Setsuna took the lead this time, her graceful strokes cutting through the water as she moved cautiously toward the center of the chamber. The floor was uneven, with large, moss-covered stones scattered along the seafloor. As they swam deeper into the heart of the chamber, the team realized just how enormous it was. The ceiling disappeared into darkness far above, lost in shadows and distant currents.
"Stay sharp," Carmine muttered, her voice muffled by the regulator. "The Golden Pearl could be anywhere down here."
Claudia scanned the area, her eyes narrowing as she took in the strange symbols etched into the walls. They appeared similar to the carvings on the door, but these were more intricate, flowing like ancient script. The writing pulsed with the same golden light that the gemstones had emitted. She reached out, her hand brushing the stone. "I don't like the look of this," she whispered.
Humbert hovered close to her, his expression unreadable as he surveyed the area. His eyes flickered back to Declan, who was still struggling to maintain a smooth swim. The young man's movements were erratic, his breathing still shallow despite his best efforts to stay calm. Humbert gave him a reassuring nod.
"You're alright," he said, his voice low and encouraging. "Just take it slow."
Declan nodded, but there was still a trace of panic in his eyes. He focused on his strokes, but every so often, his arms would falter, and he would quickly regain his rhythm with an audible gasp. Ashe swam closer, staying beside him to offer silent support.
Mike stayed a few strokes behind the main group, his eyes constantly scanning the surroundings. Something didn't feel right. The chamber was too still, too quiet, and the deeper they went, the more the pressure seemed to increase. His muscles burned from the effort, and he was acutely aware of how the weight of the situation seemed to grow heavier with each passing moment.
Then, without warning, the water temperature dropped sharply. A sudden chill swept through the chamber, sending a shiver down the spines of all ten of them. Setsuna, who had been swimming ahead, turned back, her eyes wide with concern. "What the hell was that?" she asked, her voice barely audible under the water.
Blair paused and turned, her head swiveling as she tried to sense any danger. "We've got company," she murmured, her instincts kicking in.
Just then, a ripple moved through the water ahead of them, the shadows beneath the surface beginning to shift. Large, dark shapes began to emerge from the depths, their eyes glowing faintly in the murk. Figures, like ghostly silhouettes, swam toward them with unnatural speed, their movements jerky and erratic, like marionettes controlled by an unseen force.
The team tightened their formation. Carmine gritted her teeth, the weight of the gemstone pouch now more than just a reminder of their mission—it was a beacon for whatever was lurking in the depths. "Get ready," she growled, her fingers wrapping tightly around her weapon, a long, jagged spear that had been given to her back at the castle.
"Swim!" Blair shouted, her voice cutting through the thick water as she kicked forward, her arms moving in powerful strokes. The team followed her lead, swimming as fast as they could, but the shapes in the water were closing in faster than they could move. The shadows were now taking on more defined forms—large, grotesque creatures, their pale, featureless faces twisted into permanent expressions of agony. They hissed as they swam closer, sharp claws scraping against the stones of the chamber floor.
"We need to reach the Pearl!" Carmine barked, her voice cutting through the rising tension.
Capone looked over his shoulder, his eyes narrowed in determination. "Let's go!"
Without hesitation, the group pushed forward, darting between the shadows and the creatures, trying to stay as close to each other as possible. Declan, still struggling, nearly collided with one of the creatures. The figure's clawed hand swiped at him, grazing his arm. He yelped in shock, but Caren was there in an instant, grabbing his arm and yanking him forward with a force that nearly knocked the wind out of him. "Focus, Declan!" she snapped, her grip tight.
As the creatures closed in, the team finally saw it: a large, glowing shape in the distance, a pedestal rising from the seabed, with the Golden Pearl resting upon it. The shimmering orb pulsed with a golden light, suspended in the center of a ring of stone, its surface reflecting all the light in the chamber.
"We're almost there!" Claudia shouted, her voice strained. She kicked hard, her legs pushing against the water with everything she had.
But just as they neared the pedestal, the creatures launched forward in a final, desperate attack. One of them swiped at Carmine, its claws raking across her armor, but she spun away just in time. Mike, fighting alongside her, used his spear to block another attack, his heart racing as he twisted the weapon with swift precision.
Caren and Carmine worked in tandem, their movements fluid as they took down two of the creatures in a flash of steel. Capone sent a roundhouse kick into one of the creatures' faces, and it recoiled with a gurgling hiss. Declan, bolstered by the support of his teammates and with a determined push from Ashe and Humbert, found his confidence and jabbed his spear into one of the creatures' chest, forcing it to let out an agonized screech before it fell back into the depths.
"Get to the Pearl!" Setsuna ordered, already swimming toward the pedestal, her eyes fixed on the glowing object.
The team surged forward together, fighting off the remaining creatures as they closed in on the Golden Pearl, their weapons slicing through the water with expert precision. The last of the ghostly figures fell back into the dark waters, their forms disintegrating into the shadows.
Breathing heavily and covered in the faint remains of their enemies, the team gathered around the pedestal. Blair reached forward, her fingers trembling as she touched the surface of the Golden Pearl. It hummed under her touch, and a brilliant light filled the chamber, blinding them all for a moment.
Then, as quickly as it had started, the light receded, leaving the team suspended in the dark, mysterious waters. The Golden Pearl was theirs.
"We've got it," Blair breathed, her voice awestruck.
Caren turned, scanning the chamber one last time before the chamber began to shake violently as if an earthquake was about to happen. "Let's get out of here! Now!"
Budapest Docks, Year 2000, Team 2
The group lingered on the beach, the ocean's rhythmic waves filling the tense silence as they kept their eyes on the water. Yet, as time stretched, smaller interactions began to emerge, some lightening the mood, others deepening connections.
Naila crouched near the shoreline, her fingers idly flicking small pebbles into the water. She glanced at Zuni, who stood a few steps away, her dark eyes fixed on the horizon. "Hey, Zuni," Naila called with a mischievous grin.
"What is it now?" Zuni asked, turning to face her with a raised eyebrow.
Naila smirked, pulling a small crab from behind her back. "Catch!" she exclaimed, tossing it gently toward Zuni.
Zuni shrieked, dancing back nimbly, her movements almost too graceful for someone who had just been startled. She narrowed her eyes at Naila, though her lips twitched in amusement. "You're unbelievable, you know that?"
"C'mon, it's just a little crab," Naila teased, laughing. "I thought you'd find it cute."
Zuni crossed her arms, but a smile broke through her feigned annoyance. "You're lucky I didn't hex you for that."
"Hex me?" Naila asked, grinning. "What are you gonna do, dance me to death?"
Zuni stepped closer, her voice dropping to a playful whisper. "Careful, Naila. My dances can charm or curse—it's up to you which one you'll get."
Naila chuckled, her smile softening. "I think I'll take my chances."
Zuni shook her head, turning back toward the ocean, but her cheeks flushed slightly, betraying her amusement.
AJ paced the beach, his boots kicking up small clouds of sand. Angie sat cross-legged a few feet away, tossing a pebble up and down in her hand.
"Still pacing?" Angie called out, smirking. "You're gonna dig a trench if you keep at it."
AJ sighed but stopped, looking down at her. "It helps me think, okay?"
"Sure, sure," Angie teased, patting the sand beside her. "C'mon, genius. Sit down before you exhaust yourself."
AJ rolled his eyes but joined her, sitting stiffly. Angie leaned closer, grinning. "Let me guess. You've already imagined five ways this could go horribly wrong?"
"Six," AJ corrected, deadpan.
Angie laughed, leaning back on her hands. "You need to loosen up, AJ. Life's more fun when you don't plan every second of it."
"Someone's gotta think ahead," AJ shot back, though a small smile tugged at his lips.
"Yeah, yeah. You're the hero of preparedness." Angie nudged his shoulder lightly. "Just remember to breathe every now and then, okay?"
Derek sat on a rock near the shore, watching Evan skip stones across the water. After a moment, he broke the silence. "So... Evan. Anyone here catch your eye?"
Evan's hand faltered mid-throw, and he turned to Derek, raising an eyebrow. "Wow. Subtle."
Derek grinned, shrugging. "What? We've got time to kill, might as well talk."
Evan hesitated, then shrugged. "I don't know. Setsuna seems cool, but she's on the other team, so I barely know her."
Derek nodded. "Fair. She's got that whole quiet, mysterious vibe going."
Evan smirked. "Okay, your turn. Any guy or girl you're interested in?"
Derek blinked, taken aback. "Me? Uh... I mean..." He scratched the back of his neck, his grin turning sheepish. "Maybe Angie? But she's so chaotic, I'd probably end up with a headache."
Evan laughed. "Yeah, good luck with that. You'd need the patience of a saint."
A little farther down the shore, Elisia stood with her arms crossed, gazing out at the ocean with a frown. "They've been gone for ages," she muttered. "It's like waiting for a pot of stew to simmer when you're starving. Feels endless."
Xerxes glanced over, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. "They'll come back when they're ready. Stews take time."
Elisia sighed, toeing the sand in frustration. "You sound so sure, but what if they don't? It'd be like prepping a fancy meal only to have it all burn in the oven."
Xerxes chuckled softly, his gaze shifting back to the water. "Then you start over. Cooking's about adapting, isn't it?"
She tilted her head, studying him. "You're pretty steady, aren't you? Like a perfectly baked loaf of bread—solid, dependable, and just the right amount of crust."
Xerxes blinked, caught off guard by the comparison. "Bread? Again?"
"Yeah," Elisia said with a small grin. "It's simple, but not easy. You have to get it just right, or it's not worth eating."
Xerxes raised an eyebrow, his lips twitching as if he were suppressing a laugh. "I'll take that as a compliment."
"You should," Elisia replied firmly. "We need someone who's steady right now. You're like the base of the dish—holding it all together."
Xerxes's smirk softened into something gentler as he glanced at her. "And what does that make you?"
Elisia thought for a moment, then smiled. "Probably a macaroon, just like what you said earlier back in the city. Sweet, colorful, a little crumbly on the outside but solid where it counts."
Xerxes nodded slightly. "Fair enough. Macaroons are worth the effort."
Meanwhile, Ian crouched near a patch of sand, sifting through it with a frustrated expression. "I swear I just had it. Where could it have gone?"
Ingrid walked over, raising an eyebrow. "What are you doing now?"
"My watch," Ian grumbled. "I lost it. Again."
Ingrid snorted, crossing her arms. "You really need to stop losing that thing."
"It's not my fault!" Ian protested. "This island is like some kind of Bermuda Triangle for personal belongings!"
"Correction: Your personal belongings." she said as if it were the realest fact ever. "Have you ever thought about wearing it on a chain around your neck?"
Ian shot her a look. "Hilarious. Got any actual suggestions?"
"Maybe if you spent less time worrying about your gadgets and more time planting something useful, you wouldn't have this problem," Ingrid said with a grin.
"Planting?" Ian asked, confused.
"Yeah. Like a garden," Ingrid replied. "You could grow stuff that doesn't get lost, like vegetables. They're not exactly portable."
Ian laughed, shaking his head. "I'll pass, thanks. I don't think carrots would help me tell time."
Before Ingrid could respond, the ground beneath them rumbled violently. Everyone froze, the sound of shifting earth and crashing waves filling the air. The group exchanged worried glances, and AJ stood up abruptly. "What was that?"
Naila's playful demeanor dropped in an instant, her eyes narrowing. "Something's wrong."
Angie clutched her toolkit tightly. "That wasn't just an earthquake. Something's happening."
Zuni's gaze flicked toward the water, her face pale. "The other team... they're still down there."
Silence fell over the group, the gravity of the situation sinking in.
The ground beneath their feet trembled violently once more, sending loose rocks tumbling and waves crashing harder against the shore. The group stumbled, trying to regain their balance, when Seema's voice echoed from the skies, calm and unnervingly final.
"The mission is complete," Seema announced. "Team One has retrieved the Golden Pearl. The world within this painting will now end and disappear."
Sarika's voice followed, softer but equally foreboding. "You must leave immediately. There isn't much time before everything fades into nothingness."
A stunned silence fell over the group, the gravity of her words sinking in.
"What?" Zuni gasped, her hand instinctively gripping Naila's arm. "Disappear? What about Team One? They're still underwater!"
Angie tightened her grip on her toolkit. "We can't just let them vanish! We need to help them!"
AJ groaned loudly, throwing his hands in the air. "Great! There's an apocalypse INSIDE a painting! Now THAT is just swell!" He turned to the others with exaggerated exasperation. "What's next? Exploding canvases? Killer paintbrushes?"
Elisia rolled her eyes and shook his shoulders more violently than the earthquake. "Focus, AJ!"
Ingrid, clutching her shears tightly, looked at the water nervously. "If the painting world is ending, does that mean we're next? Like, once we get out of here, will the real world implode or something?"
"Not helping!" Ian snapped, frantically patting his pockets again. "Where's my—oh, never mind! Let's just focus on getting them out!"
Evan took a step forward, his voice firm. "No time to panic. If they have the Pearl, we need to make sure they get back up here safely." He glanced at Xerxes. "Hey animal guy, help me watch for when they resurface."
Xerxes nodded, stepping closer to the water's edge, his protective instincts kicking in. "We'll grab them the moment they're close enough."
Derek ran a hand through his hair, trying to stay calm. "Everyone, spread out. If this place is really going to disappear, we can't afford to waste any time."
Naila tugged on Zuni's arm. "Come on, let's grab those loose ropes from the boat. They might need help climbing up."
Zuni nodded, her earlier worry replaced with determination. "Right. Let's go."
As the group sprang into action, another violent quake shook the ground, making the water churn violently. Angie and AJ stumbled but caught themselves, AJ muttering under his breath, "Of all the ways to go, it had to be inside a painting. Mom would be so proud."
"Shut up and grab that rope!" Angie snapped, throwing him a glare.
Moments later, a faint ripple broke the surface of the turbulent water.
"There!" Xerxes shouted, pointing toward the disturbance. "They're coming up!"
The group crowded toward the shore, their shouts of encouragement barely audible over the rumbling ground and crashing waves. Ashe's head emerged first, followed by Carmine, Capone, Claudia, and the rest of Team One, each of them clutching onto one another as they struggled against the strong currents.
"Swim! We've got you!" Derek shouted, tossing one of the ropes toward them.
Humbert caught it and tied it around himself, allowing the others to hold on as the team above began pulling with all their might. "EVERYONE, PULL!" his booming voice echoed.
"Come on, pull harder!" Naila yelled, her usually playful tone replaced with urgency.
One by one, Team One members were hauled onto the shore, coughing and gasping for air. Blair clutched the shimmering Golden Pearl tightly in her hands, its glow almost blinding against the darkening landscape.
"We got it!" Ashe gasped, collapsing onto the sand. "But the whole chamber started collapsing. We barely made it out."
"Well, you made it just in time," Angie said, kneeling beside them. "This whole place is falling apart!"
"Then let's not stick around," Xerxes said sharply, his eyes scanning the horizon. "Everyone, get to higher ground!"
The group didn't need to be told twice. With Team One reunited with Team Two, they sprinted together toward the nearest safe point, the Pearl's glow lighting their path as the world of the painting began to dissolve behind them.
The chaotic scene unfolded as the rumbling intensified, shaking the very fabric of the painting's world. Mike squinted at the horizon, his mind racing. Amid the collapsing landscape, he spotted a hill, silhouetted against the dimming light, rising above the chaos. It was close to the ocean they had just emerged from—a glimmer of hope in a disintegrating world.
"There! That's Gellért hill!" Mike yelled, pointing. His voice carried over the noise of the quakes. "It's higher ground! We can make it!"
"Let's move!" Capome called out, spurring everyone into action.
Everyone's heads turned toward the hill, one of the highest natural points in Budapest, overlooking the Danube River. The sight of the hill offered a brief sense of hope amidst the chaos, and without hesitation, they began to follow Mike, scrambling over loose rocks and shifting ground.
As they ran, a bird with sleek black feathers soared down from above, its sharp cry cutting through the noise. It circled above the group before darting ahead toward the hill, its movements precise and almost purposeful.
"It's leading us!" Xerxes shouted, watching the bird with a sharp gaze. "Follow it! It'll warn us if there's danger!"
Carmine, keeping pace with Xerxes, raised an eyebrow. "Since when do you talk bird?"
"Since then," Xerxes replied tersely, gesturing for everyone to move faster.
The bird chirped loudly, swooping back and forth before darting ahead again. Its call was high-pitched and frantic, a warning that made Xerxes' gut twist.
"What is it?" Ingrid called out, struggling to keep up with her garden shears still clutched tightly.
"Something's coming. Just run. Keep an eye on the bird." Xerxes quickly ordered.
"I've got it," Ingrid assured, her eyes following the bird's every movement. "If it starts acting weird, I'll let you know."
As the group rushed toward the hill, the ground beneath them gave a violent lurch. A deafening crack split the air, and the earth itself fractured. A massive fissure opened, stretching across their path.
"RUN!" Claudia screamed as the ground opened into a jagged fissure.
The ground crumbled beneath their feet as both groups run and eventually skidded to a halt, barely stopping in time to avoid falling into the widening abyss and separating the entire group. On one side were Ashe, Capone, Declan, Claudia, Mike, Ingrid, Caren, Angie, Evan, AJ, Zuni, Ian, Xerxes, Setsuna, Naila, and Humbert. On the other side, Blair, Derek, Elisia, and Carmine were stranded.
"Great!" AJ yelled, pessimistically throwing his hands in the air before getting swatted down by Angie. "Now we're split up during a painting apocalypse! Just swell!"
"No! We're stuck!" Blair called, panic in her voice as the gap between the two groups grew wider.
Capone surveyed the distance to the other side, his sharp eyes narrowing. "It's jumpable, but risky. You need to go, now!"
"You're not stuck!" Mike yelled back. "We'll get you across! One at a time. Blair, go first! Make sure the Golden Pearl doesn't fall off!"
Blair hesitated, looking down at the abyss below. Taking a deep breath, she backed up and sprinted forward, leaping across. Capone instantly reached out, catching her wrists just in time.
"Blair, I've got you, hold on!" Capone said, pulling her up.
But as she scrambled to safety, her bag caught on the edge, and the Golden Pearl slipped free.
"NO!" Blair shrieked, watching the Golden Pearl tumble into the fissure. "THE PEARL!"
"I'm going after it!" Humbert shouted. The big guy tied a rope around his waist in record time, quickly handed the other end to Ashe without warning, and dove into the fissure without even waiting for approval.
Ashe immediately realized his motive. "Quick! Pull him up!" he commanded, grabbing tightly onto the rope as Humbert disappeared below.
"O-On it!" Declan nervously stammered as he and Mike grabbed the rope alongside Ashe and braced their feet against the uneven ground, all three of them pulling with every ounce of strength they had. Moments later, Humbert emerged, clutching the glowing Golden Pearl tightly in his hands.
"Got it!" Humbert gasped, scrambling to solid ground.
"Awesome!" Ashe said, clapping him on the back.
"You're insane," Declan said, shaking his head, though there was a trace of admiration in his voice.
"Someone had to get it," Humbert replied with a laugh.
"Next!" Capone barked, gesturing for the next person to jump.
Derek hesitated, his face pale. "I-I don't know if I can—"
"You'll be fine!" Setsuna called from across the gap. "We'll catch you!"
Carmine stepped forward, unconsciously shoving Derek aside without any sign of hesitation. "I'll go."
Ian, Caren, and Claudia immediately positioned and braced themselves to catch her, but Carmine took a leap of faith and landed smoothly without their help, almost as if she had been doing this her entire life.
Caren was taken aback. "Well that was magnificent." she commented sarcastically.
"Uh… nice jump," Ian said awkwardly, scratching the back of his head in complete embarrassment.
"Thanks, fountain guy." Carmine replied, brushing herself off and looking at the others. "Let's keep moving."
"Uhh next!" Claudia called.
Derek still hesitated, but Elisia stepped forward first. "I'll go." She adjusted her footing, ran, and leaped. She barely made it across, her arms flailing for a moment before Xerxes lunged forward and caught her just before falling off, his strong arms pulling her safely onto the ledge.
"Thanks," Elisia said with a small smile, brushing off the dust. Her hand lingered on his arm briefly before she felt something unusual. "Wait… your arm—it's—"
"Focus!" Xerxes interrupted briskly, his tone rather harsh but he tried his best not to be unkind. "We need to keep moving." Elisia frowned slightly but nodded, following his lead. The falconer's face betrayed nothing as he quickly turned away and faced Naila. "Is it still moving forward?"
"Yup, we might miss it if we aren't quick enough though." Naila confirmed next to Ingrid, keeping her gaze on the bird.
Angie grabbed a pair of binoculars and kept watch on the bird as well. "We need to hurry. It's starting to circle again."
"Well, bullcrap!" Evan shouted, before turning back to the chasm. "Derek, what the hell are you waiting for, man!? It's your turn!"
Derek hesitated, his knees shaking. "I… I don't know if I can—"
"You can," Setsuna interrupted, her tone firm but encouraging. "Derek, just trust us. Evan and I will catch you. We won't let you fall."
Derek nodded nervously, took a shaky breath, and jumped. Setsuna and Evan both caught him, pulling him to safety.
"You're okay," Setsuna said softly, giving him a reassuring hug.
"Thanks," Derek mumbled, still trembling.
Evan frowned at the interaction, jealousy flashing across his face. "Hey—"
"Snap out of it," Zuni said, nudging Evan's shoulder. "We've got bigger things to worry about."
"Right," Evan muttered, shaking his head.
With everyone now across, Xerxes whistled sharply, and the bird darted ahead, chirping urgently.
"Let's go!" AJ shouted as the tremors intensified. Everyone sprinted forward, Ingrid keeping an eye on the bird as they raced toward the safety of Gellért Hill.
Gellért Hill, Year 2000, Team 1 and 2
Zuni, AJ, Naila, and Claudia were the first to reach the top of Gellért Hill, their breaths coming in heavy gasps as they surveyed the view. The midnight sky stretched out above them, dark and endless, but eerily calm compared to the chaos they had left behind.
"We need to signal Seema and Sarika somehow," Claudia said, her hands on her knees as she tried to catch her breath.
"Smoke?" Naila suggested, glancing around for anything they could use. "Or fire? I could pull a prank on the stars if I had the right tools."
"Not the time for pranks, Naila," Claudia snapped, though her tone was lacking bite as she was not the type of person to snap at someone.
"Relax," AJ chimed in with a grin. "I'm sure we'll think of something. Maybe Zuni can charm the stars with one of her dances?"
Zuni smirked but stayed focused. "We need something brighter than fire or smoke. Something that will catch their attention immediately."
Just as they started brainstorming, Capone arrived, panting but composed. "What's the plan?" he asked, glancing at the group.
"We're working on it," AJ replied. "Big signal, sky, exit portal. You know the idea."
Capone furrowed his brow, thinking. Then his eyes lit up. "What about the Golden Pearl?"
"The Pearl?" Claudia asked, frowning.
"Yeah. What if Blair points it towards the sky?" Capone explained. "It's magical, right? That thing glows like crazy, plus it's the middle of the night. Sky's dark as hell. If anything's gonna get their attention, it's that."
The group exchanged looks, realizing the brilliance of the idea.
"That might actually work!" Zuni said, nodding. "We'll need Blair up here with it, though."
As if on cue, the bird Xerxes had sent ahead fluttered onto a nearby branch, chirping urgently. Moments later, the rest of the group appeared, their steps hurried as the tremors beneath them grew stronger.
"Everyone's here!" Ashe called out, his voice firm despite the chaos.
"Blair!" Capone shouted. "We need you up here!"
Blair pushed her way to the front, holding the Golden Pearl tightly. "What is it?"
"Point the Pearl toward the sky," Capone instructed. "We think it might send a signal to Seema and Sarika."
"Got it."
Without hesitation, Blair held the Golden Pearl high above her head. Its glow intensified, casting a brilliant golden light that pierced through the darkness. Its radiant beam shot upward into the night, illuminating the midnight sky with a brilliant golden light. Everyone shielded their eyes from the blinding glow. For a moment, it felt as though their plan was working.
Then, something unexpected happened.
The beam began to pull Blair upward, her feet lifting off the ground. Her scream pierced the air. "HELP! I CAN'T STOP IT!"
"BLAIR! HOLD ON!" Naila shouted. Without hesitation, she got up and lunged at Blair, grabbing her ankle. But instead of anchoring her, the force started to pull Naila up as well.
Zuni darted forward, leaping and clutching Blair's other leg. "Not… letting… go!" she cried out, her body lifting into the air with them after pulling desperately down.
"They're all going up!" Claudia yelled. She sprinted forward, grabbing both Zuni's left foot and Naila's right foot but failed to plant her own feet firmly on the shaking ground as she was pulled upward too. AJ wasn't far behind, grabbing Claudia's feet in a desperate attempt to pull them all back down.
Despite their combined effort, the group continued to rise, defying gravity. The rest of the group stayed low despite the shaking, panic equally spread on their faces.
"THIS ISN'T WORKING!" AJ shouted, his voice completely strained as he gripped Claudia's leg tighter.
"I've got this!" Humbert bellowed. With a determined roar, he rushed forward and threw his large frame and arms around AJ's legs, planting his feet firmly into the trembling earth. Using every ounce of his strength, with a growl, he pulled down with all his might, his feet threatening to leave the ground.
For a tense moment, it seemed as though they were all going to be pulled into the sky. But then, with a sudden flicker, the beam of light disappeared. Gravity reasserted itself, and Blair, Naila, Zuni, Claudia, AJ, and Humbert all came crashing to the ground in a chaotic heap.
Blair groaned in pain due to having the most impact on the fall and clutched the Golden Pearl tightly as Angie steadily helped her up. "What just happened?"
Claudia dusted herself off, her face tight with frustration. "That was our signal, and they rejected it. Seema and Sarika must've seen it and ignored us."
Capone clenched his fists and looked up at the sky, his voice booming with anger. "YOU ABSOLUTE MOTHERFUCKERS! WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM US!? WE ARE NOT LEAVING THIS FUCKING HILL UNTIL YOU GIVE US A WAY OUT!"
"Capone, calm down!" Caren angrily scolded him.
"Shut up, mom!" Capone snapped, and Caren placed her hands on her head in frustration.
The bird perched nearby let out a final chirp, fluttering its wings as if to signal the end of its guidance. It flew off into the night, leaving the group standing on the quaking hilltop.
As the tremors intensified, everyone braced themselves, unsure of what would come next. But one thing was certain—they weren't going to abandon their stand on Gellért Hill.
Esterhazy Museum, Present Day
Sarika paced anxiously in front of the magical orbs, her gaze locked on the bright beam of light shooting into the sky from the hill where the two groups had gathered. "There it is!" she exclaimed, pointing to the light. "The signal. They're ready. Open the portal, Seema, so they can get out!"
Seema sat silently on the other side of the room, her eyes fixed on the beam of light through her own orb. Her expression was distant, almost unhinged, as though her mind was far from the urgency Sarika felt.
"Seema!" Sarika snapped, storming closer to her. "Did you hear me? Open the portal before it's too late!"
But Seema didn't respond immediately. Instead, she whispered, almost to herself, "She's there... I can feel her."
Sarika stopped in her tracks, confusion and frustration bubbling inside her. "What are you talking about?"
Seema finally looked at her, her eyes glistening with a strange mix of grief and hope. "Shreya," she said softly. "I can feel her presence. She's in there. In the painting."
Sarika's face twisted with anger. "Shreya? Seema, that's impossible. Shreya is gone. She's gone! You need to stop deluding yourself and think about the people still alive. My daughter, your daughter—they need us to finish this!"
Seema's expression hardened, her grief morphing into defiance. "Don't you dare talk to me about my daughter. Your Shari is the reason my Shreya isn't with me!"
Sarika's fists clenched, the mention of Shari stinging like a slap. "Shari didn't mean for any of this to happen! You know that! She's just a child, and you—"
"—And I what?" Seema interrupted, standing abruptly. "I hurt her? Sent her to the hospital? I did what I had to do, Sarika! Shari pushed Shreya off that cliff, and you expect me to just let that go?"
Sarika stepped closer, her voice rising with anger. "And what about your responsibility? You're so consumed by your grief that you're willing to let these people die in there because you can't let go of the idea that Shreya is still alive!"
Seema's eyes flared with rage, and she raised her hand, a flicker of magic sparking in her palm. "You don't know what you're talking about! Shreya is alive! I can feel her soul calling to me from inside that painting!"
"That's insane!" Sarika shouted. "She's not in there, Seema! You're just using that as an excuse to keep wallowing in your guilt. Open the portal before more people die!"
Seema didn't answer. Instead, she turned back to the orb, her fingers glowing brighter as she focused her magic. The beam of light began to flicker and dim, its brilliance fading under her spell.
Sarika's patience snapped. With a furious scream, she lunged at Seema, grabbing her arm to stop the magic. The two women grappled violently, their emotions boiling over.
"You don't understand!" Seema yelled, struggling against Sarika. "I won't lose her again!"
"And I won't let you doom everyone else!" Sarika countered, using all her strength to try and break Seema's concentration.
The struggle sent them both crashing into the orbs, which wobbled precariously on their pedestals. But Seema's magic proved stronger. With one final surge, she extinguished the beam of light entirely, the signal vanishing into the dark sky.
Panting, Seema stood over the now-silent orb, her face a mask of determination. "I won't open the portal," she said firmly, her voice shaking with emotion. "Not until I find her."
Sarika staggered back, fury and disbelief etched across her face. "You'll regret this," she hissed, her voice low and venomous. "When everyone else's blood is on your hands, you'll wish you'd listened to me."
…
…
…
…
…
"I feel her, Sarika," Seema said after what seemed like forever, her voice soft but firm. "Shreya's presence is still here. I know she's alive. Not trapped in the painting anymore, but alive in the real world. I can feel her calling out to me. And I'm not going to let go of that hope. Witches—especially mothers—can feel their children's presence, Sarika. I can feel her calling to me. She's out there."
Sarika stepped forward, her voice rising with emotion. "You can't hold onto this fantasy, Seema! My daughter is in the hospital, alive, and I need to focus on getting the children out of the painting! Not this… this wild hope."
Seema's face softened, her hand trembling slightly as she touched the orb. "I know you're scared, Sarika. I know what you're going through. But I feel it. She's alive. And I'm not going to abandon her again."
Sarika's frustration boiled over, but then she sighed, taking a deep breath. "Seema, if you believe Shreya is out there, if you truly believe that, then we need to act. For Shari. For the children in the painting. Let's get them out first, then we can focus on finding your daughter."
Seema stared at Sarika for a long moment. Finally, she nodded, her shoulders sagging with the weight of grief and determination. "You're right. For Shari… for the children…"
With a final, resolute breath, Seema raised her hands and focused her magic on the orb. The room hummed with power as the light from the orb intensified. The painting of Budapest on the far side of the gallery shimmered, its edges glowing with a strange, ethereal energy. Seema's magic reached out, pulling at the very fabric of the painting as she channeled her power to open the portal.
The air around them crackled with energy as the portal began to form. The painting, once still, now glowed with an intense light, and the chaotic, disintegrating world inside it became visible through the growing rift. The children trapped inside have a way to escape.
The way out was now clear.
Sarika took a step back, her heart pounding as she saw the glowing exit. "We've done it," she murmured.
Seema, her face still haunted by her grief, let out a breath. "Now, they can escape."
Gellért Hill, Year 2000, Team 1 and 2
Ian stumbled as the ground beneath him quaked violently. "Is it just me, or is the whole world falling apart?"
A deafening rumble shook the air as cracks spiderwebbed across the painted ground. Chunks of the earth broke away, tumbling into a void below. Trees disintegrated, buildings crumbled, and the painted sky fractured like glass.
"It's an earthquake!" Carmine shouted, steadying herself against Ingrid.
"This isn't just an earthquake—it's the whole painting collapsing!" Xerxes yelled, his eyes darting around for any sign of safety.
"Look!" Caren screamed, pointing ahead. "A portal!"
Through the chaos, a glowing golden light pulsed in the distance, flickering like a beacon. It hovered over the collapsing ground, the last shred of hope in the disintegrating world.
"That's our way out!" Claudia shouted. "Run!"
The group sprinted toward the portal, dodging falling debris and jumping over widening fissures.
"Hurry!" Ashe called, dragging Declan along as he stumbled.
"The ground's breaking up!" Zuni yelled, gripping Naila's hand as they narrowly avoided a collapsing section of earth.
"Don't look back!" Setsuna bellowed, keeping Capone and Blair close.
The portal loomed closer, but the quake intensified. The edges of the portal's platform crumbled, threatening to take it down with the rest of the world.
"Jump!"
Ian reached it first, the barista diving headfirst into the light and disappearing. One by one, the others followed, each leap feeling more desperate than the last.
Xerxes pushed Elisia forward. "Go now! Don't stop!"
Elisia hesitated for a split second, then jumped, vanishing into the golden light.
Capone turned back to see Blair struggling with the Golden Pearl, its glow dimming as the world around them collapsed. "Blair, move!"
"I've got it!" she yelled, clutching the Pearl tightly as she leaped toward the portal. But mid-jump, her grip faltered, and the Pearl slipped from her hands. "No!" she screamed, watching it tumble toward the edge of a crumbling platform.
Capone's heart stopped. Without hesitation, he dived for the Pearl, snatching it just as it teetered on the edge. The ground beneath him gave way, and he barely managed to grab hold of the platform's edge with one hand.
"Capone!" Blair cried, reaching out.
Using all his strength, Capone swung himself up with Blair's help and dove into the portal, clutching the Golden Pearl tightly against his chest as the portal closed altogether, leaving the world to crumble into nothingness.
Esterhazy Museum, Present Day (Everyone)
The contestants stumbled out of the portal, collapsing onto the marble floor of the Esterházy Museum's gallery. Several groaned in discomfort, clutching their stomachs as nausea overtook them.
Claudia pushed herself up, leaning on Elisia for support. "We're… back? We're back!"
Evan groaned, lying flat on his back, refusing Xerxes' hand to help him up. "I'm never doing that again. Ever."
"I think... I'm going to throw up," Declan muttered, leaning heavily on Ashe, who patted his back with a concerned expression.
"Great," AJ said sarcastically, sitting down with his head in his hands. "Not only did we almost get flattened by earthquakes, but now it feels like I'm on a spinning carnival ride."
Ian leaned against the wall, his breathing ragged. "That… that was the whole world inside the painting… dying."
Ingrid knelt by the edge of the group, visibly pale but scanning their surroundings. "We're back… but I don't think this is over."
Caren, still catching her breath, asked, "What was that? The painting—it felt like it was alive, like it was… ending."
Capone staggered to his feet, his face a mask of fury. The Golden Pearl glinted in his grip, and with deliberate steps, he marched toward the pedestal in the center of the room. With a resounding thud, he slammed the Pearl down, startling everyone.
"What the hell was that!?" he roared, turning his glare on Seema and Sarika. "We almost died in there! You left us in that collapsing world while you sat here doing… whatever it is you were doing!"
Humbert's grip tightened on a nearby pebble. "Uhh Capone, I don't like the sound of that—"
Seema's calm demeanor faltered slightly, but she straightened her posture. "We were monitoring everything," she said coolly. "Opening the portal at the wrong time could have destabilized it further."
"Destabilized?" Capone repeated, his voice rising. "You didn't even try to open it when we sent the signal! Blair almost lost the Golden Pearl, and the rest of us were scrambling for our lives!"
Sarika stepped forward, her expression defensive while adding into Seema's lie. "The portal couldn't have brought you back safely until the exact moment it did. We did what was necessary."
"Necessary?" Blair interjected, still catching her breath. "I could have dropped the Golden Pearl! We would've been trapped forever if Capone hadn't gotten it in time."
"Let's not forget," Angie said sharply, pointing at the two women, "you didn't even warn us that the world was going to start falling apart. Some heads-up would've been nice!"
Naila, still hunched over from the nauseating journey, raised her hand weakly, not liking the immediate tension. "Can we at least get a moment to breathe?" She asked as Zuni nodded in agreement from behind.
"Yeah, maybe blame them a little bit later?" Mike sighed.
But Capone wasn't finished. "This is more than just a game now, isn't it?" He gestured to the Golden Pearl. "You're playing with life here. If this is what you call a 'competition,' then count me out!"
Seema sighed heavily, her gaze flicking to Sarika. After a moment's hesitation, Sarika stepped up and addressed the group.
"We understand your frustration," Sarika began, her voice steady but firm. "But let me remind you all that you signed up for this. The challenges were never meant to be easy. What you faced in that painting was a test of your resolve, your teamwork, and your ability to adapt under pressure."
Setsuna frowned, her voice quiet but sharp. "A test? That was survival!"
Sarika ignored her and continued. "Now, as much as I'd love to let you rest, we need to move on. Team Two, prepare yourselves—you're going to elimination."
The room fell silent, the announcement hitting Team Two like a wave of cold water.
"Elimination?" Derek said, his voice shaky. "After all of that?"
"It's the game," Seema said firmly. "And the game continues."
Carmine crossed her arms, glaring at the two women. "This isn't a game anymore. It's a death sentence."
"Enough," Seema snapped, her tone brooking no argument as Carmine scowled. "You're alive, and you've made it this far. Be grateful for that."
As the room descended into uneasy murmurs, Capone shook his head in disgust and walked away from the pedestal. "Unbelievable," he muttered. "This is a nightmare."
Zuni stepped forward, her voice hesitant but carrying the confusion everyone felt. "How long have we been gone?"
Sarika exchanged a glance with Seema before answering. "Two days."
A collective gasp rippled through the group.
"Two days?" Angie asked, her voice rising. "That's not possible. We were in Budapest for an afternoon and left at midnight."
Seema folded her arms, her expression unwavering. "Time in the paintings doesn't sync with the time in the real world. Two hours there could be two days here—or more."
"That's insane," Evan said, running a hand through his hair.
"No," Xerxes countered, his tone low but steady. "It makes sense. That place... it felt disconnected, like a dream."
"Some dream," Elisia muttered.
Ian, still pale from the nausea, shook his head. "Two days... What about everyone outside the museum? What do they think happened to us?"
"Nothing," Seema said flatly. "This museum is its own world now. Focus on surviving the game instead of worrying about the outside."
The group descended into uneasy murmurs again, some pacing, others standing still as if rooted to the spot. The weight of the revelation—and the elimination to come—settled heavily on them all.
Capone leaned against the wall, muttering, "This just keeps getting worse."
"Get a grip, everyone," Carmine said sharply, turning back to face the group. "We're here now, like it or not. Complaining about it won't help."
Seema cleared her throat, drawing their attention once more. "Let's not waste time. Team Two, prepare for elimination. You've got decisions to make."
The room fell silent again, a tension thick enough to cut as Team Two exchanged uneasy glances. Time moved differently here, and so did their odds of survival.
Esterhazy Museum Lobby, Present Day - 1:00 am (Team 2)
The lobby of the Esterházy Museum felt colder now, the tension hanging in the air as the remaining members of Team Two stood in front of Seema and Sarika, ready to cast their votes. The towering walls and dim lighting only added to the discomfort of the moment, as everyone silently wondered who would be going home.
Seema gestured to the glowing orb, which hovered slightly above its pedestal. "It's time," she said, her voice steady. "Cast your votes, one by one, and remember—the two with the most votes will leave the competition."
Sarika stood at her side, her arms crossed. "Make sure your choices are final. There's no going back once you vote."
Each contestant approached the orb in turn, but the atmosphere was thick with hesitation and nervous energy.
AJ: AJ fidgeted as he approached the orb, his hands trembling slightly. "I don't want to do this," he thought, swallowing hard. "But if I don't vote, someone else will, and it might hurt the team. This is the worst part of the game." He cast his votes with a shaky hand, unsure if he had made the right choice.
Angie: Angie approached confidently, her mind already made up. "Ingrid's been so cold and disconnected. She's not even trying to be part of the group, and we need people who will fight for us. This is an easy choice." She cast her vote without hesitation.
Derek: Derek hesitated as he stood in front of the orb, his fingers hovering over it. "I don't even know who to choose," he thought, his face lined with worry. "I've been struggling, and I know it. Maybe they'll vote me out. Should I vote for myself?" He finally made his decision, though his guilt weighed heavily.
Elisia: She stood, eyeing the orb as though comparing it to a dish of food. "It's like choosing between two really bland meals," she mused aloud, clearly not at ease with the situation. "I guess, like food, you can only stomach so much. I'm going with my gut." She cast her vote with a sigh, feeling a little guilty for her indecisiveness.
Evan: Evan clenched his fists as he approached the orb, the memory of Derek's moment with Setsuna playing in his mind. "He was too friendly with her—" he thought, though he tried to convince himself otherwise. "It's not personal. He's been unsure, and we need stronger players." His jealousy simmered beneath the surface as he cast his vote, pretending it was strategic.
Ian: Ian tripped on his way to the orb, catching himself before falling. His clumsy nature made him laugh nervously as he placed his hands on the orb. "I don't want to do this," he thought, his mind spinning. "I'm just going to vote and hope for the best." His fingers fumbled, but he managed to make his decision.
Ingrid: Ingrid was silent, almost eerily so. Her eyes flickered briefly toward each contestant as she stood still in front of the orb, her expression unreadable. "I'm voting based on who I think will make us stronger. I don't need to say anything." She placed her hand on the orb, making her decision with cold precision.
Naila: Naila giggled softly, her playful nature taking over. "I don't know who to pick... It's like a prank, right? It's all a joke, and I have to pick someone. Hmm..." She glanced around mischievously, her fingers hovering above the orb before finally making her choice. "This is gonna be funny," she whispered under her breath.
Xerxes: Xerxes walked to the orb with a stoic expression, his cautious nature evident. "I need to make the right decision," he thought, analyzing his options. "This isn't about emotions—it's about keeping the team strong." He placed his hands on the orb and voted without hesitation.
Zuni: Zuni stood at the orb for what seemed like an eternity, clearly conflicted. "They've all done something to help," she thought. "But if we're gonna keep going, we need someone who won't slow us down... Or maybe I'm just too indecisive for this game." She finally made her vote, though her heart felt heavy as she stepped back.
Seema and Sarika stood at the front, their expressions unreadable as the orb began to glow brighter with each vote counted. "The votes have been cast," Seema said, her voice solemn. "Now, let's see who will be leaving."
The orb flickered and displayed each vote as Sarika announced:
"One vote for Angie,"
"One vote for Derek."
"One vote for Ingrid."
"Two votes for Derek."
"Two votes for Ingrid."
"Three votes for Derek."
"Three votes for Ingrid."
"Four votes for Derek."
"Four votes for Ingrid."
"Five votes for Derek."
"The two contestants with the most votes will leave the competition," Seema said with a heavy heart. "And tonight, Derek and Ingrid, you have been eliminated."
Derek let out a deep breath, his face clouded with regret. "I guess I didn't do enough," he muttered. "Sorry, everyone."
Ingrid's cold demeanor didn't shift as she glanced around, her voice barely a whisper. "It's fine. It was never meant to be."
AJ stepped forward first, clapping Derek on the back. "You gave it your all, man. Don't let this stop you."
Angie gave Ingrid a nod of respect. "You're a tough competitor. Good luck out there."
Elisia smiled at Derek, trying to lighten the mood. "Don't worry, you'll bounce back. Maybe not here, but life's got plenty of chances."
Evan awkwardly nodded at Ingrid, seemingly trying to avoid contact with Derek. "You're strong. I can respect that."
Ian gave Derek a reassuring pat on the back, trying not to trip over his own feet. "You're not out of the game, just out of this one. Keep going."
Naila reached out and grabbed Ingrid's hand with a playful grin. "You're so cool, Ingrid. You'll go far. Just not here."
Xerxes gave both contestants a measured nod. "You both fought well. It was a tough call."
Zuni hesitated, looking at Derek and Ingrid with a sad smile. "You did what you could. That's all anyone can do."
As Derek and Ingrid walked toward the exit, Sarika spoke one final time.
"You are no longer a part of this competition. The remaining eight must now focus on what's ahead."
Seema added, "Be ready for what comes next. There's no room for weakness."
With one last glance at the group, Derek and Ingrid left the museum, the door closing behind them, and the remaining contestants bracing themselves for the challenges yet to come.
London, one week prior…
Shreya drifted into a deep, restless sleep, her body succumbing to exhaustion. The events of the night faded into darkness as her breathing slowed, her chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm. Callista remained seated by her side, arms crossed, her sharp green eyes fixed on the girl as she slept.
Hours turned into a full day, and Shreya did not stir.
By the third day, Callista's concern began to gnaw at her. She leaned over Shreya, checking her pulse, which was steady but faint. "Come on, Shreya," she muttered under her breath, her voice edged with worry.
Callista had made a small camp within the abandoned cabin, scavenging the nearby woods for food and water. She kept a fire burning in the makeshift hearth, its warmth warding off the chill that seeped through the cabin's cracked walls. Every so often, she would clean Shreya's wounds, lift her head to trickle a few drops of water into her mouth, and sit back down, watching over her like a guardian.
By the seventh day, Callista was running out of patience—and hope. She sat beside the cot, her elbows on her knees, her fingers tangled in her hair. "You're not going to die on me, okay?" she said aloud, her voice breaking. "Not after all this. You hear me?"
And then, as if responding to her plea, Shreya's eyelids fluttered.
Callista shot up, her chair scraping loudly against the wooden floor. "Shreya?" she asked, leaning over her.
Shreya's eyes opened slowly, unfocused and glassy. Her lips parted, and she whispered hoarsely, "Where…?"
A flood of relief washed over Callista, and she let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. "You're awake," she said, her voice trembling. "Thank God. You've been out for a week. I thought—" She stopped herself, shaking her head. "Never mind. How do you feel?"
Shreya blinked, her gaze slowly sharpening as she looked around the room. Her voice was weak but steady. "Tired… thirsty."
Callista grabbed a water bottle from her bag and held it to Shreya's lips. "Here, drink this. Slowly."
Shreya sipped the water, the cool liquid soothing her parched throat. When she had enough, she pushed the bottle away gently and tried to sit up. Callista helped her, propping her up with pillows.
"What happened to me?" Shreya asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
"You collapsed," Callista said, sitting back down. "You've been in some kind of coma for seven days. I thought you weren't going to wake up."
Shreya frowned, her memories still fragmented. "Seven days… You stayed with me the whole time?"
Callista shrugged, trying to appear nonchalant, but her eyes betrayed the worry she had carried. "Well, yeah. Someone had to keep you alive."
Shreya's eyes filled with tears, and she reached out, her fingers brushing against Callista's arm. "Thank you," she said, her voice trembling. "I don't know what I would've done without you."
Callista looked away, uncomfortable with the emotion in Shreya's voice. "Don't get all sentimental on me," she said gruffly, but there was a softness in her tone. "Just focus on getting better. You're not out of the woods yet."
Shreya managed a weak smile, her heart swelling with gratitude. She didn't know much about herself, but one thing was clear: she was alive because of Callista. And for the first time in what felt like an eternity, she felt a glimmer of hope.
To be continued…
And that concludes the Void arc! It was sad to lose Derek and Ingrid and to be honest I feel like I haven't given them a lot to do while they were still around. This won't be the last time we will see them though as they will also still appear in the next chapter! I also would like to thank Cappucino Cream for Derek and Nobody245 for Ingrid! If you guys are still around, feel free to let me know your opinions about their portrayals!
Funny thing about this chapter, I completely forgot whether or not some of the girls (mainly the ones involved in being pulled up by the beam) were wearing skirts or dresses lmao. Let's just not think about that and trust in the gentlemanliness of both AJ and Humbert. XD
The Teams of Nights at the Hazy Museum

Next chapter, we will be witnessing some more interactions from our cast and we'll check up on Shreya and Callista in the present day! We'll also watch Derek and Ingrid as they leave the museum, but will they run into a few folks on the way? We'll find out soon on the next update which is on New Year, January 1st!
Happy New Year everyone!
