Chapter 6: Between Two Worlds
William Murdoch sat at his desk, reviewing the files of a case involving the theft of a rare skull known as the "Milton Man." It was a case that had drawn attention not only from scientific circles but also the media, given its potential significance to anthropology.
His phone lit up, and Julia's name appeared on the screen. William immediately answered, and moments later, his wife's face appeared. A warm smile spread across his own, and his heart beat a little faster.
"Hello, my love," he said, smiling at the sight of her familiar features and kind eyes on the screen.
"Hello, William. How are you?" Julia asked, concern evident in her voice.
"Busy as usual. I'm working on a case involving a stolen skull. It's quite an unusual investigation."
"I've heard about it. Is it true that the skull might be a missing link in human evolution?"
"That's what some scientists believe. But there are skeptics, too, suggesting it might be an elaborate forgery. I need to consider all possibilities."
Julia was silent for a moment, as if deep in thought.
"That sounds fascinating. You know I've always been interested in anthropology. If I were there, I'd love to help you. Maybe I should look into some materials here in London? I have connections with a few specialists in ancient remains."
William paused before replying, as if collecting his thoughts.
"Julia, that's a very thoughtful offer. Your support always means the world to me, but I know how much you already have on your plate with work and Susannah. Maybe we can revisit this idea another time. For now, I'll do my best to make progress here."
Julia smiled but noticed a hint of weariness in his voice. Perhaps the weight of his work was still pressing on him, but she decided not to push further.
"We miss you too, William. Susannah asks about you every day. She drew a picture of our family in the park, playing together. She was so proud of her work that I decided to frame it."
"That sounds adorable. Could you send me a photo of it? I'd really love to see it."
"Of course. And how are you holding up? Are you finding any time for yourself outside of work?"
"I try. Sometimes I take a walk around the city, thinking of you and Susannah. It helps me relax."
"Remember, you need to take care of yourself. You can't devote yourself entirely to work. You need some rest. Maybe you could visit that museum you once mentioned? I know it always inspires you."
"You're right, as always. I'll try to make more time to relax. Your advice always helps."
"Good. I have to get back to work now; my patients are waiting. We love you and miss you terribly."
"I love you both, too. Give Susannah a kiss from me. Talk soon, Julia."
"Talk soon, William."
After the call ended, William felt warmth in his heart. Despite the distance, their love remained strong. Before returning to his case files, he took out a photo of Julia and Susannah that he kept in his desk. He knew they'd be together again soon, and that thought gave him the strength and determination to tackle this puzzling case.
