Chapter 4: Foxtrot

The morning sun bathed the camp in a gentle light as Lupe busied herself preparing a traditional Wolf Pack breakfast. She moved with precision, her claws deftly handling the ingredients. The smell of roasted snake kabobs, cactus fruit salad, and wild berry juice filled the air, blending with the scent of dew on the desert breeze. The meal was a reminder of home—a taste of the culture Whisper had long since abandoned.

Lupe felt a pang of sorrow as she watched Whisper, the young wolf gingerly sampling the dishes. Whisper's eyes watered as she bit into the food, the flavors bringing back a flood of memories, each one more painful than the last. It reminded her of her mother's cooking, of warm nights spent by the fire, of a time before the Onyx Ember Wolf Pack had been wiped out. Lupe, sensing the younger wolf's turmoil, reached out a comforting hand, squeezing Whisper's shoulder lightly.

Sonic, already up and trying to eat, grimaced slightly. "Well… at least it's better than Sally's cooking," he muttered to himself. He tried to focus on the task at hand, but his eyes kept drifting to Whisper, her sad, quiet demeanor gnawing at him.

Tails however walked over to Whisper, his childlike curiosity prevalent as ever, he had never met a mobian around his age before and hoped they could be friends. "Hey Whisper, is that rifle a modified E-SWAT Nagant?" Tails had studied much of the Badnik weaponry with Sally, though he looked in awe at her customizations.

Whisper looked at Tails perplexed by his interest. "Um…..yes, the troop I scout for…..we all use Robotnik weaponry we well took ….. I'm pretty good with custom work." She gave a soft smile as she cleaned her rifle checking it.

"You know it's actually got a cudgel function, can I see?" Tails cutesy inquiring, Whisper actually surprised by that, handing her rifle over.

Tails taking some of the multi tools Rotor had given him out to fiddle with the rifle, opening it and fiddling with some of the wiring. "Lets see I think maybe if I switch these around, hmmmm, looks like you modified the grouping and decreased the shot recharge time, ok see right here."

Tails playfully washed his gloved hands in the air as the rifle transformed with a snap resembling a hammer. "The mechanism wiring needed to be fixed and a new servo put in but I had one here in my junk bag, to change it back just pull back the pump function back further and you should be able to see the switch."

Whisper's eyes sparkled in awe as she switched the gun between rifle mode and cudgel mode. "Amazing Smithy didn't even know that and he was an engineer!"

Tail blushing timidly fiddled with his fingers. "It was no problem Whisper, I-I mean I just want us to get along, I don't have many friends and I was thinking.'

Whisper smiled lightly back with a nod. "Yes I think we could be……..friends yes, most of the Diamond cutters are much older so……I kind of understand."

Sonic seeing Whisper with Tails suddenly got a grim reminder of how this mission once thought simple was turning out. "I think Antoine should take Whisper back to Knothole," Sonic finally said, breaking the silence. "She's hurt, malnourished… she shouldn't be out here."

Tails looked up sharply, his eyes pleading. "Sonic, Antoine came all this way. He just wants to help, and Whisper… she knows where to go. Don't send them away." His voice cracked slightly with emotion, and he punctuated his plea with his signature puppy-dog eyes.

Sonic groaned, rubbing the back of his head. "Ergh… Fine…" he relented, unable to resist Tail's earnest expression.

Lupe, who had been scowling at Antoine, softened her gaze when she glanced at Tails. The young fox had a way of melting her stoic exterior. "Very well," she conceded with a sigh. "I can't say no to that cub and his pleading eyes. Let us go; we are close to the location."

"Yay!" Tails exclaimed, his joy evident as he floated briefly in the air, only to 'stumble' and land back down with an amused 'oof.'

Whisper, watching this exchange, squinted in confusion. She wasn't used to this kind of instant camaraderie, and Tails' insistence on her staying perplexed her. She'd been on her own for so long as a pup, that she found it hard to believe anyone would want her around so quickly, from her understanding it took time to build bonds.

Antoine, on the other hand, sighed in relief. The very idea of escorting a feral, rifle-toting child soldier back to Knothole alone was daunting, to say the least.

As they set off again, Tails found himself stealing glances at Whisper. She was serious, tough, and determined, but also kind and gentle—especially with him. He couldn't help but think of her as someone he'd like to get to know better, maybe even as a peer, a friend, maybe a partner? He wasn't entirely sure if he liked girls that way yet, but the idea of having someone like Sally in his life—a partner, a confidante—was appealing. Maybe Whisper could be that someone too? Though he would prefer to leave out the kissy-face.

The group walked for about an hour before they finally reached the perimeter on the map. What they found was devastating: the remains of a village, now a destroyed oasis. The small branch of forest that had once thrived in the rocky, sandy area was in ruins. The houses were overgrown, destroyed, with debris scattered everywhere. A sign, half-buried in the sand, read "Vulpasville."

The sight of the ruined village filled the group with a mix of shock, rage, and sorrow. This was a cruel reminder of the destruction Robotnik's forces had wrought across Mobius, a reminder of how much had been lost.

Sonic stood still, his face set in a grim mask. Though the devastation tore at his heart, he forced himself to remain focused. He was here to be a hero, to help his friends—and to stop this kind of tragedy from happening again.

Tails, however, felt as if the wind had been knocked out of him. The sight of the village, reduced to rubble, shocked him to his core. He tried to remain strong, to be the Freedom Fighter he had always wanted to be, but the reality of what they were up against was overwhelming. "This… this is terrible," he managed to say, his voice barely a whisper.

Whisper nodded silently, her eyes scanning the ruined village. "We found it like this," she said quietly. "It reminded me of the day Robotnik attacked my village." Her voice wavered slightly as she walked over to Tails, squeezing his hand in a small gesture of comfort.

Antoine arrived, panting heavily from the exertion of keeping up with the group. When he saw the village, he couldn't bring himself to look. He had seen too much destruction in his time, and each time it hurt just as much as the first. His thoughts drifted to his mother, to the homes and families lost, and he felt a deep sadness well up inside him.

Lupe walked over to a tiny fox doll lying on the ground, its fabric faded and torn. She picked it up, grasping it tightly in her claws. "Robotnik and his forces… they just take and take," she said, her voice heavy with emotion. "This is just what happened to my village when I was younger than Tails and Whisper." The pain in her voice was palpable, her memories of the past blending with the harsh reality in front of them.

She closed her eyes briefly, collecting herself before turning back to the group. "We were supposed to meet an informant here," she said, her tone more resolute. "We should spread out and search. There may still be clues, or survivors."

The group nodded in silent agreement, each of them deeply affected by the sight of the ruined village. As they spread out to search, the weight of what they were fighting for settled heavily on their shoulders. This was not just a mission; it was a fight for the very soul of Mobius. And they would not rest until the world was free from Robotnik's tyranny.

The eerie chords of an acoustic guitar drifted through the ruins, a somber melody that carried through the hollow remnants of the village. It was a haunting tune, simple and raw, devoid of any real direction, yet it resonated with the emotions stirred by the devastation around them.

Sonic, ever quick to act, was already a blur of motion, sprinting toward the source of the music with the hope that it might lead to survivors. His mind raced as fast as his feet, thoughts of those who might have been left behind, trapped amidst the rubble, driving him forward.

Tails, still clutching Whisper's hand, gave her a reassuring smile, though it was tinged with the innocence of his youth. "We should go too, right?" he asked, tugging gently to pull her along. The young fox, despite the heaviness of the situation, was determined to be a source of comfort for the older wolf.

Lupe, who had been momentarily lost in the sea of memories stirred by the ruined village, looked at Tails and Whisper. His sweet gesture and Whispers calm demeanor cut through her stoic exterior, and she couldn't help but return his smile. The ferocity in her eyes softened as she clasped his hand more tightly, her protective instincts kicking in. Together, they ran after Sonic, their footfalls echoing in the silence of the ruined village, oblivious to the fact that they were being watched from the shadows.

Antoine, lagging behind as usual, was left panting heavily. His hands rested on his knees as he tried to catch his breath. "Oh, une minute!" he gasped, his accent thick with exhaustion. He looked up just in time to see the others disappearing around a corner. "Oi! Wait, please! I am coming!" His voice was strained as he forced his tired legs to move faster, desperation fueling his pace as he struggled to keep up.

When they all finally arrived at the source of the music, they found a lone figure sitting amidst the ruins. He was a gray hedgehog-like creature, though something about him was distinctly different. He wore a long black coat over a brown shirt, and his silver grieve-like shoes glinted faintly in the dim light filtering through the clouds. But what stood out most were his horn-like blond-tipped antenna-like quills, twitching occasionally as if sensing something in the air.

"Well, well, the Blue Blur finally made it," the stranger said with a casual grin, his voice carrying a hint of amusement. There was something almost feral about his appearance, but his tone was relaxed, as if he'd been expecting them.

Sonic stopped in his tracks, eyeing the stranger warily. "Hey! And who are you?" he demanded, his usual cocky demeanor faltering for just a moment in the face of the unexpected encounter.

The stranger continued to strum the guitar, unfazed by Sonic's tone. "I'd tell ya, but I think it's better I do so once your travel buddies catch up," he replied, his voice carrying an air of casual confidence.

Before Sonic could respond, Whisper gasped, her eyes widening in recognition. She sprinted toward the stranger and snapped to attention, saluting him with a rigid posture that seemed almost unnatural for the typically reserved wolf. "Sir, you are alright! It's good to see you, Sir Blast, sir!" she barked, her voice filled with a surprising amount of emotion.

Lupe, who had been keeping a protective eye on Whisper, narrowed her eyes at the display. There was something about the militaristic way Whisper addressed this newcomer that didn't sit right with her. Wolves didn't salute, they didn't act like soldiers. The sight of it made her stomach turn.

Antoine, finally catching up with the group, was too winded to voice his own concerns. He bent over, hands on his knees, trying to catch his breath as he took in the scene before him. The sight of the village had already shaken him, and now this stranger only added to his growing sense of unease.

Sonic, on the other hand, wasn't one to dwell on formalities for long. He glanced back at his friends, making sure they were all accounted for before turning his attention back to the stranger. "Alright, we're all here. So what's your name, then?" he asked, his tone firm but not unfriendly.

The gray tenrec finally set the guitar aside, standing up to face them all with a wide, spiked-tooth grin. "Name's Blast. Captain of the Diamond Cutters. Hired gun by your Princess of Nuts," he announced, his voice dripping with a mix of bravado and nonchalance.

Sonic raised an eyebrow at the nickname for Sally, but he couldn't help the smirk that tugged at the corner of his mouth. "Princess of Nuts, huh? That's a new one," he muttered under his breath. He quickly sobered, though, realizing the gravity of their situation. "So, you're extra muscle to help us out? I'd test ya out, but we're short on time. You're gonna have to walk the walk in real time."

Blast shrugged, the picture of indifference. "Hey, hey, I'm a man of action. I do what I'm hired to do," he replied, his tone casual as if the task ahead didn't faze him in the slightest. "Besides, you guys took a while to get here, so I decided to have a gander at the base we're gonna breach. It's this way."

He turned to lead the way, but not before casting a glance at Whisper, who was still standing at attention, saluting stiffly. With a sigh, Blast looked at her, his expression softening just a fraction. "You can stop now, kid, now get your butt over here! How dare you free yourself before your fearless leader saves you!" he said, his voice tinged with something that almost resembled affection, though it was buried deep beneath his gruff exterior.

Whisper blinked, as if coming out of a trance, and slowly lowered her hand, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment. She gave a quick nod, muttering an apology under her breath before falling into step behind him.

Lupe watched the exchange with a guarded expression, her mind racing with questions about this Blast character and his relationship with Whisper. But now wasn't the time to press for answers. They had a mission to complete, and they couldn't afford any distractions.

As they followed Blast through the ruins, the weight of the destroyed village pressed down on them all. The echoes of the past lingered in every broken wall, every abandoned toy, every overgrown garden. But with every step, their resolve hardened. They were the Freedom Fighters, and no matter the cost, they would bring justice to those who had suffered at the hands of Robotnik and his forces.

The freedom fighters cautiously descended the steep incline that led them toward the dark expanse of Glyphic Canyon, a place steeped in pain and loss. The entire landscape seemed like a massive wound on the earth, the barren land scarred with remnants of ancient battles and broken technology. The canyon formed a natural valley, surrounded by jagged cliffs and rocky outcrops. Small outposts and bases dotted the landscape, all leading to a massive complex built into the side of a distant cliff. The structure pulsed ominously with energy, a vile testament to the cruelty that had been inflicted upon the land.

Lupe, the proud leader of the Wolf Pack, gripped Tails' tiny hand tightly as they stood at the edge of the cliff, overlooking the grotesque sight below. Her eyes burned with anger and sorrow as she surveyed the scene. The sight was a cruel mockery of nature, the land defiled by Robotnik's machinations. Her tribe's land had once been lush and vibrant, but now it was a wasteland, its people enslaved, just like the foxes of Mobius.

"This... this is where they took them," Tails whispered, his voice trembling as he watched through the binoculars. He could barely comprehend the horror before him. Middle-aged and elderly fox Mobians, his people, were being worked to the bone, their bodies frail and weak. Laser whips cracked in the air as the odd, customized SWAT-bots drove the prisoners mercilessly. The sight was monstrous, the product of a sick mind bent on domination.

"Is it all like this?" Tails asked, more to himself than to anyone in particular. His voice wavered with a mix of sadness and anger. They had defeated Robotnik, but the scars of his tyranny remained, festering wounds that still needed to be healed. The young fox's face, though still bearing the innocence of youth, now showed a budding resolve. He was determined to right the wrongs done to his people.

"Yup, the local Robotnik endorsed big shot got foxes left and right in chains through the whole valley," Blast replied, leaning casually on a rock. His tone was calm, but there was an undercurrent of disgust in his words. "It's pretty clear they got a grudge against foxes. Instead of robofying them like they do with everyone else, they decided to work them to death. Pretty darn petty if you ask me… But it also means they're good with tech. Those SWAT-bots aren't standard issue."

Sonic, meanwhile, was struggling to keep his cool. His instincts as a hero were screaming at him to take action, to save the people below from their torment. Every fiber of his being wanted to rush in and tear the place apart, to free the foxes and make the bastards responsible pay for their cruelty.

Lupe, sensing Tails' inner turmoil, reached out and patted the young fox on the head. Despite her own anger, she managed to offer him a warm, reassuring smile. "It's exactly what happened to my tribe," she said softly. "Many of them worked to death as our land was polluted, just like this. But you're right, Tails. We can still save them."

Whisper, standing nearby, was already making adjustments to her rifle, her sharp eyes scanning the landscape. If her captain, Blast, was okay, that meant the others in her squad might be nearby as well. She had to be ready for anything, as she donned her modified SWAT-BOT mask.

Suddenly, a desperate cry echoed through the canyon, startling everyone. "HELP ME!" The voice was high-pitched and filled with terror.

Everyone raised their binoculars, searching for the source of the cry. They soon spotted a young fox Mobian girl, barely older than Tails, running for her life. She was being chased by several of the redesigned custom SWAT-bots, tears streaming down her face as she dodged blasts of energy. The girl had crimson fur, a cute but frightened face, and messy red hair with a yellow bow tied in it. She wore a yellow skirt and matching shoes, along with long white gloves that reached her elbows. Her deep cobalt blue eyes were wide with fear.

"Well, I'll be! One of 'em managed to give the slip!" Blast exclaimed, but as he looked closer through the binoculars, a sense of suspicion crept in. Something didn't add up. A civilian escaping from the iron grip of the SWAT-bots? And yet, she bore no signs of recently broken chains on her wrists or ankles. It smelled like a trap.

But Sonic didn't have time to question it. His hero instinct had already kicked in. "I got it! I got it!" he shouted, revving up before spin-dashing down the canyon, a blue blur of speed and determination.

Antoine, ever the hesitant hero, wavered for a moment before drawing his blade. "Oh, moi!" he cried, his voice a mix of fear and bravery. With a loud battle cry, "Aaaaauuugggghhh!!!" he charged down the gorge, only to trip and stumble, tumbling head over heels down the rocky slope. His ungraceful descent ended with a crash as he landed on a piece of metal that teetered on a boulder. The impact caused a rock to dislodge and hit the raised edge of the metal, launching Antoine like a missile straight into a SWAT-bot with a resounding "boink!"

"I got you, Antoine!" Tails shouted as he dropped down from above, performing an aerial spin dash. Though still a little shaky, his attack smashed the SWAT-bot's head, dismantling it in a shower of sparks.

Lupe wasn't far behind. She pounced on another SWAT-bot, her claws slashing through metal as if it were paper. "Vile machines, leave the precious child be!" she snarled, her voice filled with righteous fury. Her claws cleaved another SWAT-bot in half from head to toe, then she pivoted, slicing a third from stem to sternum in a single fluid motion.

Whisper, now in her element, raised her rifle and took aim from a distance. She was the team's long-range artillery, and this was her time to shine. With precise movements, she adjusted her scope and fired, each shot perfectly calibrated to take out the SWAT-bots that were closing in on her friends.

Sonic, having dispatched several bots with his speed, finally reached the young fox girl. "Hey, it's gonna be okay! We're here to help!" he reassured her, his voice filled with the confidence of a hero.

The girl looked up at Sonic with tearful eyes, her body trembling with fear. "Th-they're everywhere!" she cried, pointing back toward the complex built into the cliff. "They're going to kill us all!"

But even as she spoke, Sonic noticed something strange. The girl's trembling seemed exaggerated, almost as if it were an act. And her eyes, though filled with tears, had a glint in them that didn't match the terror in her voice.

"Hey, what's your name?" Sonic asked, trying to keep her calm while assessing the situation.

The girl hesitated for a moment, her eyes flickering with something akin to recognition. "M-My name is Fiona," she finally stammered, her voice wavering.

Sonic was about to respond when he suddenly felt a sharp pang of realization. Fiona's hesitation, the way she had managed to outrun the SWAT-bots, and the fact that her wrists and ankles were unscathed… it was all too convenient. Sonic's instincts, honed from years of battling Robotnik, screamed at him that something was off.

But before he could act on his suspicions, a new wave of SWAT-bots appeared on the horizon, larger and more heavily armed than the ones they had just fought. They marched in unison, their red eyes glowing ominously as they closed in on the group.

Whisper's eyes widened as she spotted them through her scope. "More incoming! We need to fall back and regroup!" she shouted, her voice cutting through the tension.

Blast, who had been observing the situation from a distance, quickly made his way to Sonic's side. "Looks like we walked right into their trap," he muttered, his tone grim. "They used the girl as bait to lure us in."

Sonic clenched his fists, anger boiling inside him. "We're not leaving her behind," he growled, his eyes narrowing as he prepared to fight. "Trap or not, we're getting everyone out of here!"

Lupe, hearing Sonic's determination, nodded in agreement. "We'll fight our way out if we have to," she declared, her voice steely. "For our people, for Mobius, we won't back down."

Tails, standing beside Lupe, looked up at her with newfound courage. "We're gonna save them," he said firmly, his voice filled with determination. "All of them."

With that, the freedom fighters braced themselves for the battle ahead. The odds were stacked against them, but they were united in their resolve. Together, they would fight to free the foxes of Mobius from their chains, no matter the cost.

To be continued…
