Chapter 2: Cracks in the System
The alarms wailed louder as Rye, Rin, and Itsuki sprinted down the gleaming corridors of the Task Force Cybernetics Facility. The sterile halls were now bathed in flashing red lights, and the distant sounds of chaos grew louder with every step.
"Any idea what this is about?" Rin shouted, her tail flicking as she ran beside Rye.
"No clue," Rye replied, his enhanced senses picking up faint vibrations in the floor—footsteps, heavy machinery, and distant impacts. "But whatever it is, it's big."
Itsuki kept pace, his eyes scanning every corner. "It's not a drill. Look at the security systems—they're cycling in overload. Someone's bypassed the safeguards."
Rye stopped abruptly at an intersection and motioned for them to follow him down a side hallway. His new neural interface was already proving its worth, helping him process the situation faster than ever before.
"This way," he said. "We need to find a terminal and figure out what's going on."
They ducked into an auxiliary control room, the small space lined with monitors displaying live feeds of the facility. What they saw made their blood run cold.
Dozens of Saiyan soldiers, all bearing cybernetic enhancement, were clashing with heavily armed intruders dressed in black combat gear. The intruders moved with precision, their advanced weaponry tearing through walls and defenses alike.
"Who the hell are they?" Rin asked, her voice low.
"No insignias," Itsuki observed, narrowing his eyes. "Whoever they are, they don't want to be identified."
Rye clenched his fists, the metallic lines in his arms glowing faintly. "They're tearing the place apart. We need to do something."
"Hold on," Itsuki said, stepping to the terminal. He tapped quickly, pulling up security logs and schematics of the facility. "We need more information before we jump in blind. If we're going to help, we need to know what they're after."
As Itsuki worked, Rye's gaze drifted back to the monitors. One screen showed the main research lab, where Dr. Koru and several other scientists were frantically trying to secure data while a group of Task Force soldiers held off the attackers. Another screen showed the power core, where sparks flew as intruders planted explosive devices.
"They're hitting multiple targets at once," Rye said. "Data, tech, and infrastructure. This isn't just an attack—it's a full-scale operation."
Itsuki frowned as he accessed the intruders' communications. "Got it. They're uploading something to the facility's servers… a virus. If it spreads, it could wipe everything the Task Force has stored here—research, enhancement specs, mission logs, everything."
"That's bad, right?" Rin asked.
"Very bad," Itsuki replied. "And if those explosives in the power core go off, this entire place will be a crater."
Rye's jaw tightened. "Then we split up. Rin, you head to the power core and stop the explosives. Itsuki, you take over the virus upload and shut it down. I'll head to the research lab and back up the soldiers."
Rin gave a mock salute. "I'm on it."
Itsuki nodded. "I'll need about ten minutes to isolate and neutralize the virus once I reach the server room."
"Then let's move," Rye said.
The trio split up, each racing toward their respective objectives. Rye's path took him deeper into the facility, where the sounds of battle grew louder. His enhanced body responded with ease, his movements faster and more precise than ever before.
He reached the research lab just as an explosion rocked the building, sending a shockwave through the corridor. Rye barely stumbled, his new enhancements stabilizing him. He burst into the lab, where Dr. Koru was barking orders at her team.
"Dr. Koru!" Rye shouted, grabbing her attention.
"Rye?" she turned, relief flashing across her face. "Thank the stars. The intruders are closing in. We need to evacuate, but we can't leave this data behind."
Rye scanned the room, noting the panicked scientists and the locked servers containing sensitive information. He turned to Dr. Koru. "I'll hold them off. Get your team and the data out of here."
She hesitated, but another explosion nearby made her nod quickly. "Understood. Be careful, Rye."
As the scientists scrambled to retrieve the data, the doors to the lab blew open, and a group of black-clad intruders stormed in. Rye wasted no time.
He charged at the nearest attacker, his enhanced speed catching them off guard. His fist connected with their chest, sending them flying into a wall. Another swung a baton crackling with energy, but Rye ducked and countered with a powerful kick that shattered the weapon and knocked the attacker unconscious.
The last two intruders pulled out energy rifles, but Rye was faster. He weaved between their shots, the world seeming to slow as his neural interface processed their movements. In seconds, he disarmed them and left them incapacitated on the floor.
Breathing heavily, Rye turned to see the scientists had finished securing the data. Dr. Koru gave him a grateful nod.
"We're ready to move. Thank you, Rye."
He nodded. "Get out of here. I'll cover your escape."
As they left, Rye's communicator crackled to life. It was Rin.
"Power core secure," she said, though her voice was strained. "Had to take out a few of those bastards, but the explosives are disarmed."
"I'm almost done with the virus," Itsuki added. "Just need two more minutes."
"Good work," Rye replied. "I'll meet you both in the central atrium once you're done."
But as he turned to leave the lab, a new figure stepped into the room—a Saiyan with cybernetic enhancements far more advanced than anything Rye had seen. Their eyes glowed a piercing red, and a cruel smile spread across their face.
"You've been busy," the figure said, their voice low and mocking. "But I'm afraid your little rebellion ends here."
Rye's heart pounded as he dropped into a fighting stance. Whoever this was, they weren't just another intruder—they were a monster.
"Let's see what you've got," Rye muttered, his metallic veins beginning to glow.
The figure just stared and laughed...
