Chapter 3: The Newbie Sparks
The lab fell silent as Rye locked eyes with the figure standing in the doorway. The faint hum of their cybernetics was drowned out by the low crackle of energy radiating from the katana in their hand. The blade glowed with a sharp, violet hue, arcs of energy sparking across its edge. Strapped to the figure's wrist was a ki infused monowire—a deadly tool capable of slicing through nearly anything with surgical precision.
The figure smirked, their crimson eyes scanning Rye with cold amusement. "Fresh out of the enhancement room, and they already sent you to your death. How fucking foolish."
Rye's instincts screamed at him to run, but his Saiyan pride refused to back down. He dropped into a defensive stance, his tail flicking behind him as his enhanced muscles tensed. "If you think I'm going down easy, you've got another thing coming."
The figure chuckled darkly. "Good. Let's see what you're made of."
They vanished in an instant, their speed blinding. Rye barely had time to react as the katana's glowing edge sliced toward his chest. He twisted his body, the blade missing his heart by millimeters but leaving a deep, searing gash across his torso. Blood splattered onto the floor, the pain sharp and immediate.
Rye staggered back, clutching the wound. His neural interface pulsed, flooding his system with pain suppressors and enhanced adrenaline.
"That was a warm-up," the figure sneered, lunging again.
This time, Rye's enhancements kicked in with greater precision. His body moved faster than his mind could process, ducking under the katana and countering with a swift punch to the figure's ribs. The impact sent a shockwave through the room, but the figure barely flinched.
"Not bad," they said, their tone almost impressed. "But you're still a rookie."
The monowire on their wrist ignited by ki, glowing like a razor-thin strand of fire. With a flick, it lashed out toward Rye. He barely managed to leap back, but the wire caught his leg, slicing through his combat pants and leaving a deep, bloody gash.
Rye hissed in pain, his mind racing. They're too fast… too strong.
The figure pressed the attack, their movements a blur as they swung the katana and monowire in deadly tandem. Rye dodged and deflected as best as he could, but his body was quickly reaching its limit. His blood painted the floor, each wound a grim testament to how outclassed he was.
Still, there were moments—brief flashes—where his enhancements shone through. A sudden burst of speed allowed him to narrowly avoid decapitation. A precise counterstrike landed a solid hit on the figure's jaw, snapping their head to the side.
The figure wiped blood from their lip, their crimson eyes narrowing. "Interesting. Your enhancements… they're different. Unrefined, but still.."
Rye panted, his chest heaving as he struggled to stay upright. "I'm… not done y-yet"
The figure laughed, a sound devoid of warmth. "Oh yea? Let's see if you can handle this."
They raised their katana, the violet energy intensifying until the blade vibrated with lethal power. In a single, fluid motion, they unleashed a wave of ki-infused energy that tore through the lab like a storm.
Rye braced himself, crossing his arms as the wave slammed into him. His cybernetics absorbed some of the impact, but the force sent him flying into a wall, shattering glass and scattering debris. He crumpled to the floor, blood dripping from his mouth.
His vision blurred as the figure approached, their katana dripping with energy. "Such a shame that is." they said, raising the blade for the final strike.
But then, something stirred deep within Rye. A surge of power erupted from his core, his cybernetic veins glowing brighter than before. His neural interface surged with a new command—a desperate survival mechanism.
Rye roared, the sound primal and defiant, as his body moved on instinct. He lunged upward, catching the figure off guard with a devastating punch to their midsection. The blow sent them skidding back, their armor cracking.
The figure gritted their teeth, their expression shifting from amusement to annoyance. "You're a stubborn one, aren't you?"
Rye staggered, barely able to stand. "You… have no idea."
Before the fight could continue, the sound of reinforcements echoed through the halls. Rin and Itsuki burst into the lab, flanked by what remained of the Task Force soldiers. Rin's eyes widened in horror at the sight of Rye's bloodied form.
"Rye!" she shouted, rushing to his side.
The figure scowled, their eyes darting to the newcomers. "Tch. Looks like our time is up." They activated a device on their wrist, and a portal of crackling energy opened behind them.
"This isn't over," they said, their voice filled with promise. "I'll be watching you, rookie. Don't disappoint me."
And with that, they stepped into the portal and vanished, leaving the lab in ruins.
Rye collapsed to his knees and hands, the adrenaline fading and the full weight of his injuries hitting him as he tried to catch his breath with blood spewing out his mouth. Rin caught him before he fell, her hands shaking. "You idiot. You could've died."
Itsuki knelt beside them, his expression grim. "We need to get him to medical. Now."
As the soldiers secured the area, Rye's vision darkened, but not before he muttered one final thought:
"They're hiding something… something bigger than we know."
And then, everything went black.
