By 2009, Jaakko and Ilmo had firmly established themselves as pillars of Watery's community. Coffee World was thriving, continuing to draw visitors during its bustling summer season, and the Kalevala Knights remained at the heart of the town's spirit. During Coffee World's quieter off-season, Lena had taken a part-time job at the Bright Falls Bookstore. The job suited her perfectly—she loved books, and the time away from Watery gave her a chance to stay connected with the larger world.
The brothers had also expanded their business ventures, buying out the trailer park next to the lighthouse. They'd worked tirelessly to improve the park, making it a more comfortable and welcoming space for its residents. Additionally, their motorcycle workshop had become a key resource for the area, doubling as a rental space for local businesses for building festival floats, especially for Bright Falls' annual Deerfest, a mid-September tradition that brought the region together.
At home, Jaakko and Lena were devoted parents to their now four-year-old twins, Charlie and Charlene. The preschoolers were bundles of energy, filling the trailer with laughter and chaos. Lena often joked that she'd forgotten what silence sounded like. Ilmo, true to his word, had taken on the role of "cool uncle" with gusto. He'd taught Charlie and Charlene how to mimic the sound of motorcycle engines, much to Lena's exasperation, and he never missed a chance to sneak them treats when their parents weren't looking.
One of the twins' most remarkable traits was their ability to switch seamlessly between English and Finnish. Jaakko and Ilmo had made a point of speaking Finnish at home, wanting to pass on their heritage. Lena had embraced the challenge, steadily learning the language herself. By now, she could hold her own in conversations with the townspeople of Watery, especially the older generations, earning their admiration.
One crisp autumn evening, Jaakko and Lena sat on the porch of their trailer, watching the twins chase each other around the yard. The sun was setting, casting a warm golden glow over the lighthouse in the distance.
"They're growing up so fast," Lena said, her voice tinged with nostalgia. "It feels like just yesterday we were bringing them home from the hospital."
Jaakko nodded, a smile tugging at his lips. "I know. Sometimes I still can't believe we have twins. It's like a whole new adventure every day."
"And a lot of laundry," Lena added with a laugh.
Jaakko chuckled, leaning back in his chair. "True. But I wouldn't trade it for anything."
Their conversation was interrupted by the sound of tiny footsteps and excited giggles. Charlie and Charlene ran up to the porch, their cheeks flushed and eyes sparkling with mischief.
"Uncle Ilmo said we can ride motorcycles when we're five!" Charlie announced.
Jaakko shot Lena a look, shaking his head. "Of course he did. Don't listen to Uncle Ilmo, okay? You're not riding motorcycles until you're much older."
Charlene crossed her arms, pouting. "But we want to be like you and Uncle Ilmo!"
Lena knelt down, pulling them both into a hug. "You can be like them in lots of other ways, sweethearts. But maybe start with bicycles, okay?"
That night, after the twins were asleep, Jaakko and Lena sat together, reflecting on their lives. Between Coffee World, the Kalevala Knights, and their growing family, they'd built something truly special in Watery. It wasn't always easy, but it was theirs, and they wouldn't have it any other way.
