Monday, 9th January 2023 – Part Four
The DJ drew everyone's attention, all seven of them, and smiled at them. "Thank you for asking for me to be here tonight but I have a slight problem."
"What?" Roy growled.
"Both grooms have requested different songs for their first dance."
Jamie and Roy looked at one another. They were in the main room of their suite, the hotel had moved the furniture around for them to give them a dance floor and Bryn, the DJ, was there so they could dance to anything they wanted without having to worry about anything. They had all had lunch together after the ceremony at a cosy place where no one cared who they were and now in the early evening hours were watching the sun go down through the big windows. Roy had insisted that Jamie should have all of the things that they'd have done with a bigger wedding…including a first dance. Jamie had organised a photographer who had been happy to get paid double to keep taking photos into the night, but their own little reception had been a surprise for Jamie; the prefect reminder of why he chose this man.
"I flipped a coin and I have a song to go first and one to go second, are you happy with that plan?"
"Yeah, mate, good idea," Jamie said, looking at Roy.
"Whatever you want," he told Jamie. "We can swap the fucking songs at the fucking party we have with all of the rest of the people we like."
"You like people?" Jamie asked.
Phoebe laughed and poked Roy. "Can I help design the invitations?"
Roy shrugged. "The party is going to be Jamie's idea so ask him."
Jamie rolled his eyes and yanked Roy closer. "Play the first song, thanks, Bryn."
"Oh, let me fold
(Oh wait, let me do that again, 'kay)
Oh, let me fold into you
Feel the weight of your skin
It'll be the one place to hide
When nobody can't get it…"
Jamie smiled and pressed into Roy's arms, swinging slowly with the music filling the hotel room. Roy's hands were tight on him as he sung the words in Jamie's ear even though this had been Jamie's choice of song. Jamie felt like his chest was three sizes too big for his body, he felt like it was wrapped around Roy. Fuck…two days ago he thought he was going to end up watching Roy leave him when he was done with this thing they had. Now, he'd married the other man. As the song ended, he pressed his mouth against Roy's ear.
"I want to change my surname," Jamie told him.
"We could both change our names," Roy responded.
Jamie shook his head. "Mummy ain't a Tartt anymore. And my dad's not worth his name and I want to be your fucking husband."
"You are," Roy reminded him. "We're wearing matching fucking rings and we said fucking vows. You forgetting shit?"
"I don't want to hide it," Jamie told him. "If you do, I understand but I want to change my name and just get on with our lives, yeah?"
"I am happy to tell fucking everyone we know," Roy told him. "If you want to be a fucking Kent then you can be Jamie Kent…I'll love you regardless of your fucking name."
"Now," the DJ said softly, obviously not wanting to interrupt the couples who were all dancing. "Our second song."
"Doesn't matter," Roy mumbled. "That was our wedding dance song."
"I don't know what yours is yet," Jamie told him.
"What does it matter, Jamie Kent?"
"Fuck," Jamie mumbled. "I can't get a chub during our wedding dance."
"I set out on a narrow way many years ago
Hoping I would find true love along the broken road
But I got lost a time or two
Wiped my brow and kept pushing through
I couldn't see how every sign pointed straight to you…"
Roy pressed a long line of kisses down Jamie's neck, not caring that his mum and Simon were dancing to their left, not caring that his sister and Phoebe were dancing to their right, that Jamie's little sister was asleep in her pram, not caring about anything but the fucking man in his arms. He might be too old for fucking Jamie fucking Kent but he was not fucking letting him go again.
"I don't wanna cry, you wanker," Jamie told him, burying his face in Roy's neck.
They danced for hours, stopping to order food as different people were hungry, drinking and enjoying themselves. Phoebe took over for the DJ for three songs while he ate the meal they forced him to order, and they bounced around to a Taylor Swift medley.
When the night was over, Jamie scooped Phoebe up and carried her back to Ruth's room while Roy had his shower. Ruth pressed a kiss to his cheek when he was leaving and he paused next to her.
"I'm not going to hurt him," Jamie promised.
Ruth threw her arms around him. "I know."
"He's the best thing that ever happened to me."
"Me too," Ruth said. "Apart from Phoebe…I know you love him as much as I do."
Jamie squeezed her once more and pulled back. "Have a safe trip tomorrow if I don't see you."
She laughed. "I'm not expecting to see either of you, but I don't want to think about it."
"At least now your scrapbook is finished."
Ruth laughed as she closed the door in his face. Jamie smiled and went back to his room. He found Roy lying on the bed, eyes heavy as he watched Jamie walk into the room.
"Just lying there naked?"
"I'm wearing one thing," Roy told him, holding up his left hand.
"Fucking hell," Jamie said, striding towards the bed and launching himself at Roy, sealing his lips over the older man's.
