Chapter 19: A Disorderly Warning

Kratos was alone - a rare occurrence as of late. Then again, Kratos didn't find the usual company unpleasant, but he still sought the peace of loneliness.
Shenhe was keen to join their expedition, less so to take part to any combat but more to see of the land beyond the mist and deep into the thunders. Lumine and Paimon were somewhere back in Mondstadt for some chores, something they started to do as things started to wrap up for the trip and...
As things were getting wrapped up for the travel to Inazuma thanks to Captain Beidou's ship, the former god stared in the distance, almost thinking of seeing Inazuma through the coat of clouds that were between Liyue and their new destination.
Kazuha, the boy that came from those distant lands, spoke of a horrible regime.
It wasn't the worst chaos could conjure, but permanent eternity of... everything? For a moment, he could see his father's own visage flash through the mist.
A reminder of the paranoia Zeus was known to have - if Zeus had won, if the corruption that tainted his originally more 'understanding' mind would have prevailed upon Kratos, he knew that would have been Greece's destiny.
An endless rule of the thunder, one that was enforced within mindless effort to preserve things to be the same as within a day. A pure insanity that could break the heroism that had once glorified the pantheon in the Olympus, leaving behind just a hollow shell up for grab by other deities.
Fixing the chains of the Blade of Chaos, Kratos looked away from the mist for a moment, and then... he felt him. Oddly familiar, enough for him to unleash Leviathan as he aimed it at the lone visitor that managed to avoid detection until he stood right behind him.
Instead of Lumine's brother, Kratos was now staring at a tall figure. Dark violet his clothes, a mask covering half of his face. He had a sword, but it was sheathed. Either a bold move of trust, or a foolish decision driven by arrogance.
"I was hoping to speak with you, Kratos of Greece."
A hint of surprise flared within his gaze - it was the first time that someone made it clear they were aware of his past. And it worried him a lot as he tightened the hold over his weapon.
"Who are you?"
"Dainsleif of Khaenri'ah. I was once a captain for the fallen kingdom, I am sure you heard of... the tragedy."
"Five hundred years ago, your home was lost," Kratos summarized, frowning. "The gods banded together-"
"No."
A pause, then a renewed frown. "What?"
"This is the original story. That the Archons fought in Khaenri'ah. But the truth is that their presence there was an effort of containtment. For we found something unlike anything this world had ever seen... and something yours is in constant war with," Dainsleif remarked, sounding somber. "It bears many names. The Abyss, the Hatred, the Pollution and..."
"Chaos," Kratos guessed and the masked swordsman nodded. "But Chaos is hardly a threat. A constant worry, yes, but hardly... what I have seen."
The Primordial Deity had been present in his own conquest. Kratos had been an agent of chaos, albeit indirectly, as he destroyed the balance of Greece. Some may say this made him polluted, but the truth is far more complex - Chaos was multi-faceted and with endless goals, emotions and reasons.
Where the common deity represented the closest thing a mortal could understand of a Divine Being, Primordial Gods were far too difficult to understand. Even when he ascended to the role of God of War, Kratos had been told to never look into the topic by Athena.
Not even Zeus was keen to consider Chaos as a feasible 'element' to either ally or fear. It merely existed as a force of nature, well beyond everyone's comprehension in its benevolent or malicious goals.
"That's because Teyvat's elemental energy is far more different than your home. The balance is fragile- where your home the gods are aspects of nature, the order of things imposed by the Heavenly Principles is based on individuals forcing their will upon nature."
What Dainsleif was suggesting explained a few things. While it was hardly the case, elemental deities were hardly so 'different' than their elemental representation. While he heard much about this Raiden Shogun, he had to admit that her connection with Zeus on a more personal level is far less present as an individual.
Zeus, even before being polluted, was a being of thunderous intentions. Turbulent, voracious, and powerful. The Raiden Shogun, as described by someone opposed to her like Kazuha, was shown as a figure of judgment and nothing more. That was it, nothing else representing her element.
Likewise, this could extend to Venti and Zhongli. The former because he was too carefree and too... detached. There was just so much of freedom a deity should be able to accept. And the fact that Zhongli was fine in letting go of his powers, a distancing to what one would expect from an ever-enduring god of the stones, and rocks, and earth - too much of a coincidence.
Yet, this opened up a new question.
"Where did they claim the power from the Gnosis?"
"Dragons. The representation of natures had been long shackled and... I am afraid I can't go any further without warranting trouble," Dainsleif suddenly interrupted, posture tense as he looked ready torun. "While the Heavenly Principles have gone quiet for long, I will just leave you with a single piece of information that matters much:"
He turned and started to walk away.
"Whatever is monitoring us from the skies... they are afraid of you to the point of ignoring you."
And Dainsleif was gone. Kratos looked around, taking steps as if to chase after him but...
He was gone. He thought that something was missing from the overall discourse. It was clear 'something' was watching and that this entity was indeed afraid of Kratoslearningwhat it was. And from the sound of it, this creature, this individual, was going to be a threat to him one way or another.
More questions to his list meant for the God of Wisdom in Sumeru. That was definitely going to be the next stop after Inazuma if there wasn't any changes so... Kratos gave one last look at the distant mist and he spotted a purple lightning striking the water.
A sign?
Possibly, but Kratos cared not for those. After all, he was quite sure going to be fighting this Raiden Shogun from what he was told about. Not just from Kazuha, but also the other individuals that escaped from Inazuma after the imposition of the Vision Hunt Decree.
Things were not going to be easy from the moment they arrived, this much he already expected.
AN
Next time, Lumine POV into Ritou Village as they make first contact with Inazuma. And then... Yae visits her good friend (and Master) and tells her that things may not be so gucci for her with Kratos around.
Of course, Ei doesn't understand she is running at supersonic speed into the biggest and thickest wall ever. And she isn't wearing a helmet.
