Chapter 22: The Oni Furiosa

Everything was a difficult to grasp and understand. It was like a lucid dream, but painful. But good painful.
In the mind of one Mikoshi Chiyo, the sense of never dropping out of her combative nature played deeply with her blood as an Oni. She had long held back, long ignored the urge, but then something changed. It felt like yesterday - and maybe it was - when she brawled the abyssal monsters and felt her own blood burn in joy as she cleaved and cut through those peons. Oh yes, she felt enabled to do so - her beloved Ei told her to do that. To slay and maul and kill and stab and destroy and mutilate and bite!
There was nothing greater within Chiyo's mind than killing in the name of her friends. She had been a bit nervous over Saiguu's warnings as she had told them these monsters were scary powerful - as if! Chiyo bloodied her blade after years and years of resting it, to be a mother and to be a wife. And now? Now she was cackling relentlessly as she faced the endless horde of shapeshifting monsters. It even got to a point some even dared to mimic her beloved Ei! The shameless bastards managed to even cut her good hand in the process, causing her to get even more angrier at how careless she had gotten.
Everything stopped mattering as her own mind got taken over by that intense bloodlust that consumed the very notion of 'going back'. Why would she do that? She was doing things right by stopping the horde! Like Ei and Makoto told her, like that dumb Kitsune warned her to. How long has she gotten there to spill blood and entrails? Who cares!
And today was even better. The Abyss mustered the best forces at last! Sure, one of them smelled 'unusual', a blonde girl - and what's that little floating brat? If she gutted her, will Chiyo get candies? Her mouth was already salivating over that hope. Yet- oh no, there was more to that group.
The familiar 'Qingxi' smell told her this one was vicious- like her! But the last one... oh Gods, she was already bothered and excited for this one. He sounded so 'tame' and yet he smelled like a beast. It reminded Chiyo of a true beast that was nigh-invincible to beat. And even more. Oh, the scent was one of a natural-born warrior.
Her blood as a Oni sang praises to the bald foe, and she launched herself with the ferocity befitting of a proud fighter. She bounced and slammed her kanabo, pushing aside all as shewantedthat last threat first. Her face-splitting grin was even doubled as the bald man's axe clashed intensely with her choice weapon, surprising Chiyo as the kanabo started tobreak. Ah yes, it was the right fight if someone was already breaking her recently-crafted tool of destruction.
After losing her sword somewhere in the butchering (or when she lost her hand), Chiyo had to rely on makeshift tools she learned to craft. A little skill she gained from her silly human hubby. What was his name? Bah, it wasn't important right now! This was what mattered, a fight beyond the same boring ambushes that leads to nothing!
She pushed back, stepping on the side to avoid getting skewered by the annoyed silver-haired girl trying to strike at her blindspot, then jump upward as the blonde unleashed three blasts of electro that made ground retreats pointless. Her airborne status lasted briefly, using her own weight to slam down before such fragile stance could be exploited against her. Gods know how many times Saiguu had admonished her for being so reckless in getting her body damaged. Her missing hand was a bitter and infuriating reminder of her shrill voice during those times.
Nonetheless, this was great! What a glorious medley of sparks and cuts! She struck wide to create space, but the bald man ignored the warning - he could see through the Oni's bluff much to her chagrin and delight. It has been so long since she fought someone decent. It made just briefly question if this was indeed an Abyssal beast or worse. Maybe worse, which was good -HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Another clash, this time the Kanabo was growing even more worthless, forcing Chiyo to adapt by pushing the club to its very limit to try and use her nails to cut into the bald man's throat. To her surprise, his target had seemingly seen to that strategy too, a shield manifesting from his 'free' hand and causing her claws away - just enough for his left hand to dart to her own throat. She snarled, ready to sink her fangs upon his pale flesh... but then something peculiar occurred as the man choked her. Something 'screamed' within her as Abyssal pollution manifested out of her lips, spat like blood upon the bald man's hand but... failing to sink into his flesh as orange and golden flames erupted all around her foe.
And Chiyo screamed in true pain as she felt her entire body searing in agony over the feeling of fire tearing her apart.
At least, this was the case at first as she felt her own mind breaking under the unnatural feeling, but... but then the fire didn't hurt. And she felt energy flee her body as a strange calm consumed her. Was she dying? No... this felt more like being terribly tired and spent. It felt the most tired she had ever been as her blurry sight grew more focused and yet disoriented. She felt her lungs no longer aching for more scent of blood and asking for air, and for her heart to slow down compared to usual.
...What was going on?
Before she could ask this fine question, Chiyo felt her consciousness stripped away by a sudden punch crashing her face and body onto the ground. Not the mightiest punch, but just enough to properly give her a reason to fall unconscious. As the tiredness claimed her mind, and her subconscious deprived her of the brief bout of panic she had over her surrounding, Chiyo slept quietly and dreamlessly.
For her body was still damaged by the tarnishing Abyssal Pollution which had led her to not only join the Abyss itself, but almost kill her beloved Ei.
AN
I always found the whole Mikoshi Chiyo's situation so jarring compared to the rest. It is clear Mihoyo is setting her up on the side to see her make a comeback, especially since they left her fate so unknown, but I really feel like she should have been killed like the rest. Kind of drains more from the already tight plotline Inazuma has.
