All I want to do Chapter 4
The next morning
Sarah sat in the living room holding the paper close to her heart. Maybe it was a substitute for the real thing. His words were thoughtful and caring. That he really knew her. ' But how can that be? How could two people possibly have such a strong connection after such a short time?' She flipped to the last page again running her fingers over his writing.
" Sa-rah, earth to Sarah."
Sarah snapped out of her thought of him and their time in the library. She looked over at her bag that was just sitting next to her seeing the strap of her bra poking out, then quickly looking up at Carina. "What planet where you on?"
'If you only knew.'
"Sorry just thinking."
"Well stop that, we have to sign up for training and you need to come with us."
Sarah thought that the distraction was what she needed. She grabbed her things and followed the girls back to the quad to the outpost. They walked up to the counter showing them their badges. The clerk came back with three piles of clothes. Carina looked at the pile. Pulling out a pair of cargo pants, sweats, golf shirt, t-shirt, with the CIA written on the front and recruit written on the back and a ball cap. The last item was a fleece zipped up type jacket. "They want us to wear these. Where's the fashion?" Carina slightly disgusted. The clerk looked at her but didn't reply but instead asked Sarah what her shoe size was. "Size 10."
The clerk came back with a pair of hiking boots. Sarah stuffed the items she could into her bag and carried the rest. The next line was to sign up for gun training. She walked up to the line not seeing the man in front of her. She bumped into him seeing the brace on his leg. She looked up. "Recruit?" In a gruff deep voice.
"Sorry."
"No worries, Walker, right?"
Sarah was surprised that he knew her name.
"Major Casey. I will be your trainer."
Sarah nodded. "Just sign here and go have an eye test and come back. We start training this afternoon. 15:30."
"Okay, see you then."
She didn't think that she'd be starting right away and she had to think for a second. ' 15:30 would make it 3:30.' Something she had to get use to was the 24-hour clock. She slipped inside and stood in line for her eye test.
Casey looked at her and remembered her standing in line weeks ago and how Charles reacted. Curious indeed, he looked forward to training this one.
Sarah headed back home listening to Carina complain about her new clothes. Sarah slipped into her room laying out her new gear. She took the challenge in stride. She read the instructions that were pinned to the jacket. 'You are required to wear the authorized clothing during the next phase of your training. If clothing needs to be replaced, please return to the outpost. Gun training - cargo pants and golf shirt. Tactical training sweatpants and t shirt. Hiking boots required at all times.
Sarah slipped her clothes off and snuck into the shower. The warm water was welcoming. Her thoughts went back to Charles.
She changed and surprisingly her new gigs fit her perfectly. She slipped her ball cap on, pulling out her ponytail through the back of the cap. She grabbed a coffee and sat in the living room waiting to go. Carina came out wearing her gear and despite her long legs they fit her as well. Zondra came out and she made the outfit look good as well. The three laughed at what they were wearing as Carina walked the room as if she was on the runway. Carina finally sat down. "Who is your trainer?" Sarah looked up, Casey."
"And you?"
"Same."
"Zondra?"
"Same."
"Well, that's good."
Sarah looked at the clock. I better go don't want to be late. "We will meet you there, we aren't up till 4:30."
Sarah turned around. "You mean 16:30."
"Yeah whatever." Carina shouting from the living room.
Sarah heard her and laughed then walked out and headed back into the quad. She looked at the map figuring out how to get there. She walked downhill about a block hearing guns firing. She knew that she was in the right place. She walked in and reported to the desk. "Yes, your training will start in 15 minutes." Sarah walked the room looking at the photos in the wall and accolades and one name caught her eye. It was a photo of the Major and Charles. Then below she saw his record. She read it and smiled. ' What else are you good at?' She heard a subtle cough then turned to face the Major who stood there with a clip board. "Walker. Follow me." She followed him and surprisingly he walked pretty good with his braces. Almost like he didn't need them. They entered what looked like a gun shop. The Major put down his clip board. "Welcome."
"Thanks."
"I brought you into what we call the armoury. As you can see, we have a wide selection of guns and ammunition. My duty is to make sure that you can handle and fire a gun no matter what transpires. Learning to use your gun properly will make or break the events that have unfolded out in the field."
Sarah listened to his speech and she found a lot of similarities between what he was saying and what Charles had said in his classes. She had one more week with him and then she was to start her next set of classes. The Major snapped his fingers getting her to follow. He placed a small 45 on the counter. "Each gun is made up of pieces. Your job is to know how to take the gun apart and put it back together in your sleep. It should become second nature. Let me show you." The Major took the gun and in seconds had the gun apart, then did it in reverse. He watched Sarah's reaction and was impressed with her concentration. He showed her again, this time breaking each step down and showing her how each piece of the gun fit and how she had to focus on the sounds the gun made. He put the gun together forgetting one piece. He wanted to know if she'd pick up on it. When he was finished, he clicked the gun and waited. Sarah closed her eyes then responded. "You missed the spring. It doesn't have the same clicking sound. And you have the safety on." The Major grunted then smiled. "Very good. Now you try." Sarah took the gun and struggled with a few pieces lengthening her time. "Not bad, you seemed to struggle with this part." He switched hands and held the gun in his dominant hand and showed her the difference. "You're right-handed." Sarah nodded. "Okay hold the body of the gun like this then use your left hand to take the barrel allowing your right hand to click here. It takes practice but you'll get it." Sarah wasn't one to settle for second best. She took the gun again, though her time was slow she managed to take apart and rebuild the gun.
The major then showed her different types of guns. "Out in the field you will have your CIA issued gun but it is also good to have others that you can use and rely on. Most of these guns are used by us and or other agencies and also the bad guys." Sarah noticed the guns that he specifically pointed to. Making a mental note. He looked at the time. It was 16:15. "I'll see you tomorrow."
"Yes tomorrow." The room was quiet but in seconds later the gal at the counter came in with a box. This is your practice piece you will also be asked to wear it as much as you can to get use to having it on you."
"Thanks."
Sarah opened the box and was like a little girl on Christmas morning. She pulled out a replica of the gun she just practiced on. She also saw some instructions on how to clean and take care of it. She slipped the gun holster onto the waist of her cargo pants inserting the gun into its holster. Hearing it slid made her happy. She closed the box and walked out seeing Carina. Sarah turned her hip to show her. Carina laughed. Then took off when she heard her name. "Got to go." "Bye."
Sarah walked back up the hill and never realizing how many recruits were now wearing their guns. She wanted to share her excitement with one person. She headed to the Jefferson building hoping to see him.
She walked towards his office and approached the door, seeing that it was open. ' Maybe he's around?' She walked in seeing that his office was empty, so she decided to leave a note. She grabbed a pen and a piece of paper. Charles rounded the hallway and stepped into his doorway seeing Sarah in her fitted cargo pants and golf shirt and her hair in a ponytail, bent over his desk. He stared at her till she stood up startled. Charles looked at her. "Leaving so soon?" Sarah turned to face him. "I wanted to show you, my attire." Charles smiled then looked behind him as he closed the door walking towards her. She opened her arms and brought him close. Their lips met. "Hi." "Hi." They kissed in a tight embrace for several minutes till Charles leaned against the back of the couch. "Nice gigs?" "You like? "I do. So, gun training has begun." "Yeah, that means your class is done soon too." Sarah diverted her eyes. "Come here." Charles brought her close again. "I like this surprise. And yes, your first round of classes is almost done." She wrapped her arms around his neck. "Then what?" "You take another set of classes and do your gun training and tactical will keep you busy." "I mean us."
Charles kissed her and that seemed to be enough for now.
Sarah headed to the door. "I better go."
"Thanks for stopping by." He kissed her again.
"Bye."
"Bye."
A few days later
Sarah was surprised to get a note from Charles. It was a sticky note stuck to where she sat in his class. She looked up and smiled. Chuck spent the rest of the class talking about 'What to expect and not expect on a mission.' Sarah sat back as she watched his power point presentation enjoying the graphics. She also was looking forward to hearing about his next talk on the forensic of spying. She remembered him stating that he had a degree in Forensic Engineering from Stanford. She slipped out after class and grabbed a cab.
She arrived before him and sat at their table eagerly waiting for him. She looked at her watch and as the time passed, she wondered if he was going to show. As the time approached an hour, she paid for her coffee then headed out the door. As she looked up, there he was coming around the corner. He looked preoccupied. He looked up and smiled seeing her there. "I'm so sorry."
As he approached her. "Hazards of the job. I was about to leave when I got a call and I had to take it." Sarah had never called him on his 'other duties' and figured that this was that one time she would. "Do you want to talk about it?" Charles grabbed her arm. "Wanna go somewhere else?" She smiled. "Okay." They joined hands and walked around the corner. "I assume that you had your coffee so how about something to eat." Sarah looked up and saw a Mexican Cantina type restaurant. They walked in and found a booth. The waitress came by dropping off menus and a drink list. Charles quickly looked up and ordered a stiff drink and a beer. He looked at Sarah. "I'll have one of those fruity slushy drinks with the beer that sticks in it. " Charles laughed. He looked up. "Make that two and skip the other order. Also, can I have some water. Thanks."
He grabbed her hand and placed it in his rubbing the back of her hand with his fingers. "Tough phone call?" Charles sighed. "Yeah."
"Is this the other thing that you told me about, have to do with making time for things. And do you, have it?"
"I do but that means other things will take a back seat." He continued to run his fingers over the back of her hand. "You mean us?"
"Partly, and frankly I don't see enough of you as it is."
"I liked the sticky note." Charles smiled.
"Well, I guess I could stick notes around campus." The waitress returned with their drinks. "Are you ready to order?" Sarah quickly looked at the menu.
Charles looked up, "Can we have a few more minutes?" The waitress smiled then walked to the next table. Charles looked at his menu then closed it. Sarah did the same. They ordered then nursed their drinks. Charles looked at her. "How is gun training going?"
"I have my second class later today."
"You liking it?"
"What shooting guns? I'll let you know. I am at the beginning stages and I haven't fired a gun yet."
"Well, when you do, don't forget to breathe."
Sarah watched as Charles diverted his eyes. "You want to talk about what's obviously bothering you?"
Charles took a sip. "It's the part of the job where you know that your choices will have consequences and you can't fix the past."
"Is this important enough that it needs fixing?"
Sarah had no clue what he was dealing with and what agents go through with missions or planning a mission but she could be there for her boyfriend. "Charles, I don't know what your going through but whatever it is, if there is the slightest chance that what you need to fix now or if it can be fixed now, whether it is broken or not, personal, or professional, then do whatever you can do to fix it. I'm not going anywhere."
Charles leaned forward as Sarah leaned forward for a kiss. "Thanks, I needed this."
Their waitress came and took their orders.
They finished their meal and headed out holding hands. Charles looked at his watch. "What time is your gun training?"
"15:30."
"Impressive."
Sarah smiled. "Well, you have almost two hours. So, what do you want to do now?" As he dragged his hand down her arm. Sarah moved closer. "We can do a lot of kissing." He looked at her and saw that look and he knew; he had a sister. "Sounds good to me." They slipped into his car and their lips met. The close quarters made it very intimate. Charles moved closer but got blocked by the stick shift. He sat back frustrated. Sarah shifts her body upwards and slides over to his side as she sits on his lap with her feet dangling on the passenger side. She slid her hand down beside his left thigh giving him a look as she released his seat. The whole seat slipped closer to the back seat giving them a little more room. Charles held her close as they continued to kiss. When the moment got too intense one or both would back off a little. "So, a date and a make out session. Not bad for us." As Charles caressed Sarah's face. "Not bad."
They held hands just sitting in the quietness of his car being thankful for this moment.
Charles looked at Sarah's watch. "We better get you back." Saddened by his words. She moved back over to the passenger side as Charles slid his seat forward slightly.
He dropped her inside the quad and watched her slipped down a path south of campus. He backed out and drove to the Jefferson building.
Sarah changed and headed over to the gun range practising her dismantling of her gun. The Major stood in the background watching her and knew her potential. Her technique and her attention to detail impressed the veteran. He waited till she was done then got her attention. He knew that he had a diamond in the rough or did he. Sarah stood up and followed him out to the gun range. He grabbed two black plastic cases and walked to the far end. He stood with his back against the long alley. "Afternoon Walker." "Major."
" Todaywe will get you going on target practice. The more you practice the better you will be. Plus, it doesn't hurt to have an upper hand when it comes to tactical training. I promise you will be the best." Sarah blushed slightly. She did not know this man but he seemed to have faith in her. He opened the top plastic case pulling out a gun that was inserted in separate compartments. He took each piece out and assembled his gun. Then he showed her how to load a magazine. "Most times you can fill a magazine fairly quickly. Magazines can have capacities of 15-30 rounds. I usually have two or more extra mags on me. But the preference is yours." Then the Major got all statistical on her. "50 bullets per box for pistol ammo and 20 bullets per box for rifle ammo. Then there are ten boxes in an ammo case. This means that there are 500 bullets per case for pistol ammo and 200 bullets per case for rifle ammo."
Sarah was trying to take in all that he was saying and felt pretty good when she was able to answer his follow up questions. He passed the second case to her and had her take the other lane. He watched as she opened it up and assembled the gun. Grabbing a handful of bullets and loading a magazine then inserting it into the gun. "Now you pull back the neck of the gun hearing a click. Make sure your safety is off and you are good to go." Sarah did what she was told. "Now you line your body and your arm to the desired target." The Major pressed a button and a clothesline came forward. He grabbed a target behind him and clipped it to the line. "Most targets have there quadrants just like a human. There are zones, to disarm or slow down an assailant your points are here." He pointed to specific areas on the paper target. To make a kill your zones are here and here. Either one of these they are either dead instantly or will bleed out." Sarah maintains full attention which again impressed the Major. He pressed the button and waited till it reached the far end. He lined her up and placed her hand and arms in the proper stance. "There will be a kick once you press the trigger. And you may feel it later on. But the more you practice the easier it will be." Sarah lined up again eyeing the far end. She raised her arm and clasped her left hand over her right hand and the gun. She made sure the safety was off and remembered what Charles said. "Don't forget to breathe."
She inhaled then exhaled and fired. The kickback was more than she anticipated but after a brief break she got back into it. "Okay now I want you to shoot, then when I tap your shoulder, I will ask you how many bullets you have left. Then you will check to see if you're correct." Sarah nodded. Sarah fired continuously till he tapped her shoulder. She stepped back. "How many recruit? "14 shots. Sir." "You sure?" Sarah released the magazine and counted and sure enough there were 16 left in the magazine. The Major smiled slightly. "Continue recruit." Sarah return to her stance and fired. She emptied her magazine seeing the target zip forward. He reached over her and pulled down the target. He looked it over and counted the holes he saw. There were a few shots on the edge of the target counting six, the center had a hole about the size of a golf ball. And two shots hit the top center of the target. "Not bad." He gave her the target and signed it. "You continue to practice and you will become a great shot." Sarah took the target and smiled. "You're welcome to stay and practice. You get your hours in then I will gladly sign off on your licence." The Major took his gun apart and placed them back into its case. He grabbed his case and passed his box of bullets to her. "See you tomorrow." " Tomorrow."
Sarah grabbed a new target and clipped it in the line and pressed the button watching it zoomed back to the far end. She loaded her magazine and fired. She fired five shots then had the target come back to her. She looked at the five shots and only three hit the target and one was dead center. She grabbed a marker she saw and numbered them. She sent the target back and fired five more and did the same thing. By the time the magazine was emptied she had 25 direct holes in the target. She noticed that most of her shots were on near or around the right-handed side of the target. She needed to ask tomorrowon how she could fix that or if it needed to be fixed.
Sarah rolled over knowing that todaywas her last class with him. She looked forward to seeing him at least twice a week and this was going to be it. She dragged her feet out of her warm cocoon and slipped into the bathroom. She heard Zondra and Carina in the kitchen. She slipped into the kitchen after getting most of her morning tasks done, grabbing a cup of coffee. "Morning sunshine." Sarah smirked at her. Sarah was not a morning person and Carina was.
Sarah sat down and sat with her one leg bent on the seat while the other dragged on the floor. She sipped her coffee thinking of him. "So, Carmichael's class ends today. I wonder what our next class will be." Zondra turned to face them. "Rumour has it it's international communications or something like that plus tactical." Sarah stayed quiet till Carina piped up. "Do you think Carmichael is seeing someone. I mean someone like him can't be single. He's kind of nerdy but in a James Bond kind of way." Sarah's mind went to everything that they did over the last few months. She sipped her coffee trying not to react. Zondra spoke. "Not sure what he prefers, whether it's blondes or brunettes." "Hey what about red heads?" Zondra looked at Carina. "Sorry but I don't think he's a red headed kind of guy. He would probably go for someone like Sarah." Sarah spat out her coffee making a mess. "Whoa Walker, not saying that it's you per se." Sarah stood up grabbing a towel and cleaned up her mess. "I'm going to go and get ready." She put her cup into the sink and slipped out leaning against the hallway wall. 'That was close.'
Sarah got dressed and headed to class and was surprisingly welcomed in the quad by a tall, dark, handsome man, holding a coffee. "Hi, what a surprise?"
"I know." As he passed her one of the cups. Sarah looking around. "Shouldn't we go somewhere else?" Charles continued to drink his coffee. "Nope." "And why not?"
Charles looked at her. "I have watched this quad from my office window for the last eight weeks and I know for a fact that the quad does not get busy for another half hour so we have 20 or so minutes of just us enjoying this wonderful spring morning. So, relax and enjoy your coffee. Think of it as a date."
"A date?"
"Yeah, we do the other stuff, which is fantastic so why not take every other moment that we are together as dates, which is what a boyfriend and girlfriend would do."
Sarah smiled. "Boyfriend."
"Yup." As he put his cup to his lips. Sarah then leaned her head on his shoulder.
"Well then , you want to hear something?"
"What?"
"Carina and Zondra think that your dating a recruit or they want to know if you are dating a recruit. They figured that you either like brunettes or blondes and Carina looked at me as one person you'd probably go after."
"Well, she is correct."
"Technically not."
"And why is that?"
"Because we were a thing before I arrived here, so therefore I am not one of your conquests. Plus, they see you as a nerdy James Bond type."
"How do you see me?"
Sarah sipped her coffee. "The man who saved me. My Clark Kent."
"Superman, I'll take that."
She laid her hand out as he slid his fingers into hers as they enjoyed being out in public. The twenty-minute countdown arrived as Charles eyed the horizon. "Times up." He got up and started walking away. "Don't be late for class. It will be my finest hour."
Sarah saddened by his comment that this was the last class, but she was thankful that she was able to be with him in public. I know that he was trying to be 'normal' trying to have a normal relationship. She got up and grabbed her bag and smiled. ' Boyfriend.'
Sarah sat down for the last time in her spot. She watched him set up then sit on the desk dangling his legs, facing the class as they walked in. As the class settled Charles got up projecting an image with the words Forensic engineering.
He faced the group. "Forensic engineeringhas been defined as "the investigation of failures—ranging from serviceability to catastrophic—which may lead to legal activity, including both civil and criminal". He walked the front. "The forensic engineering field is very broad in terms of the many disciplines that it covers, investigations that use forensic engineering, cases of environmental damages to structures, system failures of machines, explosions, electrical, fire point of origin, vehicle failures and many more." He put up another slide, MATERIALS, next slide, PRODUCTS, next slide STRUCTURES. Charles continued to speak. "The investigation ofthese components and their consequences could lead to civil or federal prosecution.
A new slide pops up. HISTORY. "As the field of engineering has evolved over time, so has the field of forensic engineering.
Next slide INVESTIGATION. "Vital to the field of forensic engineering is the process of investigating and collecting data related to the: materials, products, structures, or components that failed. This involves inspections, collecting evidence, measurements, developing models, obtaining exemplar products, and performing experiments. When investigating a case, a forensic engineer will follow a series of standard steps of their investigation process. First thing is when the forensic engineer arrives to the scene is to establish safety. The next step would be to do an initial incident appraisal. Taking a quick observation of what the solution is at third step in the investigative process is to plan how the investigation will go and what resources they will need to obtain to do the analysis next step is to create the investigative team, once there is a plan on how to investigate, they will make a team of the experts in the given field needed to conduct the analysis. Lastly would be to start the investigation, and this is where they conduct their analysis.
There are two of the main types of analysis done in forensic engineering, there is root cause analysis and failure analysis. Root cause analysis is defined as looking at the system as a whole and what led to the system failing, and is done with large scale object, for example a building analysis is defined as the analysis of one part in the system that failed to operate, an example of this would be a car failure causing an accident. Trace evidenceis sometimes an important factor in reconstructing the sequence of events in an accident. For example, tire burn marks on a road surface can enable vehicle speeds to be estimated, when the brakes were applied and so on. Ladder feet often leave a trace of movement of the ladder during a slip and may show how the accident occurred. When a product fails for no obvious reason and these events can lead to ways to support legal decision-making in matters of criminaland civil law.
During criminal investigationin particular, it is governed by the legal standards of admissible evidenceand criminal procedure. It is a broad field utilizing numerous practices such as the analysis of DNA, fingerprints, bloodstain patterns, firearms, ballistics, toxicology, microscopyand fire debris analysis.
Forensic scientists collect, preserve, and analyze evidenceduring the course of an investigation."
The room goes dark and the lights come on.
"Just like I told you in this fantastic speech, which is what I am trained to do, that is my education. Just like you all, your education can play a pivotal role in how you do your job as an agent. Yes, my priority is to the U.S. Government, but being an agent is like an onion. There are so many layers that this Government doesn't take into consideration. They don't always know what goes on in the field, they may have a manifest or intel but that would be the outside of the onion. The travelling, the other agents that you might work with, a handler who works along side you would be the next layers and so on. But despite what you will learn here, it's your due diligence to be aware, be safe. We can train you and give you the knowledge but once you leave here each mission that you go on will have many pieces that fit into your mission." Hands went up. "Yes, you in the back." "Your degree is a Forensic Engineer."
"Correct."
"Did you and do you still use this out in the field."
"Yes, I use it on every mission and sometimes in more detail depending on the type of mission that I am on. Your skills and what you bring to the plate will help you, so rely on your intuition and your team."
"Yes you."
"How would a history degree help?"
"Hey, I love history and pop culture, especially music. I remember a mission that I was on that had me looking into some stolen devices. I had to sweet talk a possible mark. During our talk and flirting I brought up music and the history of the croissant and in that time, I was able to move into the next phase that well involved some…you can use your imagination. But as things progressed her guard was down and I was able to retrieve the device and save the day. So, no matter what your past consists of, use it."
"Next question?"
"Yes, you mentioned that as agents we should rely on our skills but what if your skills get you killed?"
Charles looked at Sarah trying to figure out what to say. "This job isn't for the faint of heart. When you applied you also signed up for what this job entails. Any job that you do can harm you or kill you. Yes, being an agent is like having a target on your back but if you know the risk even slight ones you can do this job for a very long time.
Sarah sat back. She heard his voice but she chose not to listen. The room emptied as she sat there not sure how to take his answer, he didn't really answer her. She grabbed her bag and headed to his office. Charles put his bag down walking over to make himself a stiff drink when he heard his door swing open. "What was that?" Charles walked to the door and closed it. "What was what?"
"What you said."
"I answered your question."
"No, you didn't."
Charles liked the fiery mood she was in. He leaned against the back of the couch and brought her close giving her a kiss. "Yes, I did."
"No, you just said that if I knew the risk then I would be safe." He kissed her again.
"I said what they needed to hear."
She continued to talk and each word she said he kissed her. She eventually slowed down. "Did you not hear me, I told them what 'they' needed to hear. I tell you what you need to hear, to keep you safe. I don't want you to sell your soul to do this job. My job is to prepare them as a whole, get them ready for what's out there. But you're different and I can't tell both in there and I won't. " He looked at her. "I don't have all the answers, and I have learned a lot and I have made some mistakes and trusted the wrong people and that is my burden to bare, but what I have been through, I can pass onto you to keep you from making the same mistakes. If anything happened to you."
Sarah caressed his face. "Nothing is going to happen to me.
"I'm sorry. This job." Charles shakes his head.
Charles looked at her then brought her close. She spoke softly. "This job wouldn't have brought you into my life."
Their kiss got intense. Charles slid his lips into the crook of her neck making her moan. Her hands sliding up his shirt feeling his skin. He ran his hands down her back then stopped as she grabbed her phone. "This better be good." Charles laughing. "Where am I? Why?"
"We have tactical in 30."
Sarah looked at the clock. "Crap! I forgot! Okay can you grab my bag and I'll meet you there. Thanks."
Charles looked at her. "Duty calls." Looking at Sarah as she tried to fix her hair. "Well, its sucks."
She headed to the door. He followed then opened the door. Sarah saw how his shirt was hanging on him. So close to taking it further. "Soon." Charles kissed her then opened the door.
Sarah quickly changed giving Carina and Zondra a lame excuse why she was late. The three of them stood in a circle as their trainers entered the room. "Good morning recruits." He walked the circle making sure that they all were wearing their t-shirts and sweats and hiking boots. Sarah made sure her ponytail was extra snug. She stood straight listening and watching. "My name is Major Mitchel and I will be working along side Major Casey as the two of us will teach and train you for the next six weeks. Your training will also coincide with your other classes. Failure to keep up your grade will result in a dismissal from this program. You will also be required to keep up with your weapon training." He continued to talk. "We will start out with a run around campus." Hearing grumbling. "I will ignore your disapproval once but if I hear it again whoever you are will bare my wrath. You will run the quad and return back. I am not looking at whether or not you can run the quad in a personal best but that may come down the line. But to see what you have in you all. So warm up, we run in 10 minutes. Carina stood in front of Sarah and Zondra. "This should be fun." Carina looking at her body. "This body does not run." Sarah laughed. Sarah sat on the floor and started stretching. She did do some running in high school and did pretty good running after she saw her dad being arrested. So, she had it in her, she continued to stretch her legs then stood up working on her arms. She shook her arms then heard the word and ran out of the room. She followed the group out the door then took off. She ran and kept up with the majority. She rounded the first corner then the second then the third and was starting to feel the effects. She was almost close to the end and reminded herself that she could do this. She ran back inside and down the hall to where she began. There were eight or so of the twenty that had come in before her. She thought that it was pretty good. She grabbed some water seeing Zondra then Carina come in 12th and 13th.
"Not bad." As the last few recruits came in.
Mitchel walked the recruits as they all sat on the floor in a circle. Mitchel and Casey walked the room. Mitchel instructed as Casey kept an eye on the recruits and how they responded. Casey made mental notes on who were the ones to keep an eye on and those who might not have it in them for this line of work.
"Each class you will run the quad then return and work on techniques and tactical moves. Your mind must be in the same mental and physical state as would your body. Your body can be at its strongest, physically fit, physically strong, and then your mind starts to play tricks on you or the opposite, your body is destroyed, broken bones, bullet wounds, stabbed, whatever else. In those cases, your mental state can be your saviour reminding you, that no matter what, you will be okay." Mitchel looked around. "Our job is to get you prepared for what's out there. Combat and tactical training knowledge has changed drastically over the years, but the old school basics still work. We will teach you the skills you need and how to survive out there. The best part is the final test where you will be dropped off somewhere out there and have to find your way back to a central undisclosed location." Sarah absorbed everything she was hearing. The final test excited her.
"Recruits we will continue tomorrow." The recruits stood up. "Recruits dismissed."
Carina and Zondra walked up to Sarah. "This should be interesting."
"What this class, Carina?" Zondra asking.
"I think it is going to be so cool." "Right." Sarah agreeing with Zondra. "And the final test. I can't wait."
Carina rolled her eyes. "You two can do the fighting and shooting and I'll focus on the art like seduction." Carina winked. "And if I don't hurry, I will be late for that class." Carina grabbed her bag. "Later girls." Sarah was still revved up from her run that she convinced Zondra to head to PJ's. They found a booth and ordered quickly. Sarah scanned the bar hoping to see him. It would be so sweet to see him more than once today. Unfortunately, he never showed.
The next day
Thump! As Sarah's head hit the mat. She was blind sided by a flip and landed hard. "That's what happens when you're not looking." Mitchel helped her up then faced the class. Then spoke into her ear. "Don't celebrate too quickly when you think you've won there is always something that can arise." Sarah tried to focus as her head started to hurt. She stood back in line with the others.
After class Mitchel walked up to Sarah. "You, okay? You hit your head pretty hard." "I'll be okay. Thanks."
"I insist that you go get it checked out. Just to be sure. We wouldn't want you to be taken out."
Sarah nodded then did what she was told.
Charles was heading back through the quad when he overheard a few recruits talking about a recruit that fell hard. He instantly felt that something wasn't right. He headed to the training room but found it empty. He ran back to his office, making some calls when he looked up and saw her at the door. His fears were correct. He rushed to the door. Sarah didn't look too good. He helped her to the couch. "You, okay?" She tried to shake her head. "Try not to move too much." He propped up the pillows and had her lay down. "They said not to be alone and I didn't know where Carina and Zondra were, I didn't know where to go. I know this could put you in a predicament." Charles leaned over and kissed her forehead. "I'm glad you came." He grabbed her feet and took off her boots. He wrapped her up and gave her something to drink. "It's awful." "It's electrolytes." As he sat on the coffee table facing her. "We don't want you to get dehydrated in case you start to vomit, plus it helps settles the dizziness and the headache, well I think anyways." Charles caressed her face. She gave him a sleepy smile. He got up and pushed the table aside and slid to the floor facing her. "What happened? " I volunteered to help Mitchel while he taught us a move. I thought that I had come out on top, but Mitchel grabbed me raising me up off the ground. He lost his grip as he had me up in the air, he tried to hang on but somehow, I fell and landed hard on the side of my head. He told me to watch, so that it doesn't happen again."
"He's right but he had no right to use a recruit this early in training."
"You're so sweet."
"He had no right." She reached for his face. "Come here." Charles leaned towards her giving her a kiss. "I will definitely not do that again." She laid back as she stared at him seeing the worry on his face. She was glad she had him. Charles watched her for an hour keeping her awake the best he could, then allowed her to fall asleep.
He got up and picked up the phone. "Hey Elle. Hey how are you?" "I'm good."
They talked for awhile catching up as he hadn't called his sister in sometime….
"One more thing. What do you know about concussions?"
"Do you have one?"
"No not me, someone I know."
"Where are they?"
"Right now, sleeping. I kept them up and they fell asleep just a little while ago."
"What happened?"
"She fell about a meter or so and landed hard on the side of her face."
"A girl?"
"Yes Elle."
"At this point unless the examination said otherwise, just rest and fluids. I would still wake her up after an hour for at least the next few hours or so, then let her rest. She might have a bad headache." Charles looked over to her.
"Ok sis thanks."
"If her symptoms change or get worse take her to the ER."
"I will, thanks."
"Don't take too long to call next time."
"I won't, say hi to Awesome."
"Will do. Bye."
"Bye."
Charles grabbed some water from his fridge and sat down on the chair beside her catching up on his task of bringing in Gaez. He grabbed his note pad and looked at what he had and he had very little. He knew he needed a team, scout the location of his whereabouts, have a plan of action, find a way to find him then all the what ifs and if none of his plan worked out. He started jotting down these thoughts; What if he escapes? What are his motives? Who's on his team? Why now? What are his weaknesses? Charles jotted down what he knew. He put his items down then leaned towards Sarah caressing her face then placing a kiss on her cheek. Whispering her name. She slowly opened her eyes. "Sorry to wake you but I need to see how you're feeling?" Sarah laid there. "I'm tired."
"Yeah, you will be."
"Okay."
"I will wake you up again, in an hour."
She smiled as she formed her lips to receive a kiss. Charles obliged leaning in giving her a kiss. She fell back to sleep. Charles returned to his task.
Charles flipped on a light which made Sarah open her eyes. "I'm sorry."
"No, that's okay." Looking at the clock. Trying to sit up. "I better go, I'm probably keeping you from something."
"No, you're not, I did some work while you slept."
"I'm sorry for that too."
Charles sat down beside her as she rested her head on his shoulder. "How do you feel?"
"Like my head is in a vice grip."
"Like a hang over."
"Yeah."
He reached for the bottle and gave it to her. "You hungry?"
"A little." As she continued to drink. Charles grabbed his phone, then looked at her. "Pizza or Chinese?"
She looked at him. "Surprise me."
Charles smiled and dialed. "Hey, I will order the number four make it two orders plus extra rolls. Same address. Yes. I'll meet you in the front."
Charles put his phone in his pocket. Sarah put the bottle down on the table then slid down laying her head on his lap. He quickly grabbed the pillow, she laughed. "Why the pillow?" "Comfort only."
She smiled; Charles diverted his eyes. She laid facing him as he played with her fingers. "Did they say it was a concussion?"
"In not so many words. It was just a fluke landing. Hazards of the job."
"It can be."
They sat there in silence till Charles got a text. He looked at his phone. "Food is here."
"You have them text you?"
He got up. "Let's just say I'm a frequent customer."
He got up and slipped down the closet exit and in five minutes he was back carrying two bags. Sarah sat up. "It smells delicious."
Chuck moved his papers that caught Sarah's eye but not enough to actually decipher what he had jotted down. He placed the bags on the table and passed her a carton and some chop sticks. Then he got the rest of the cartons opened for her.
Charles watched as she was struggling with her chopsticks. He put his down and grabbed her sticks and placed them in her hand. Then showed her with his. It took a while but she got the hang of it.
He got up and cleared the cartons into the garbage. He made a to go bag for her. She got up. "I better go."
"Yeah, it's getting late. You feel, okay?"
"This was the best medicine, thanks."
She kissed him then kissed him again. It was sweet and full of emotion. Charles grabbed his papers and stuffed them into his bag with his laptop flipping off his lights as they slipped down the closet exit. Charles opened the steel door opening it to the quad. They stayed hidden for some time holding each other and softly kissing. These stolen moments they greatly appreciated them. Charles walked with her till they reached the end of the quad seeing that she'd be okay the rest of the way. He looked around then kissed her softly in the darkness with the subtle streetlight shining behind them. Sarah broke the kiss. "I'll be okay." He rested his head on hers. "I know, have a good sleep."
"I will."
Charles waited till she was out of sight. It was tempting to walk her to her door but seeing the amount of people out tonight he didn't want to take that chance.
Sarah slipped the Chinese into the fridge, showered then went to bed. A perfect ending to a horrible day. Charles walked back into the quad and to his car driving home.
A week later
Sarah finished her gun training with the Major and decided to stay longer to practice her shooting. Her test was fast approaching and group tactical training outside campus was happening in two weeks. She loaded her gun and fired bringing her target shots to a 90% accuracy. She was impressed with her score. She dismantled her gun and slipped it back into its case. Then sat down at one of the stations deciding to clean her gun. She needed the practice.
An hour later she returned her case and headed back needing to do some thing. Carina and Zondra were doing there own training which allowed her to focus on her training and what she needed to do to make her the agent that she knew she could be. She decided to go to the gym. She still had her bag with her training gear inside. She walked the quad and entered the training wing. Changing she looked up seeing Charles walking by at the far end. She stopped to see him but he quickly slipped into a far door, followed by the Major. She smiled then headed in to do her work out. She did some cardio running, running a few miles on the tread mill then did some weightlifting. Her favourite was the punching bag. She worked on her punching for the rest of her time. She slipped in to change figuring that she would shower, at home. She grabbed her bag slipped on her hoodie and slipped her cap on walking out the door. She stopped when she passed the door that she saw Charles walk through. She walked a bit further seeing him running on the treadmill. She had just found the staff workout room. She watched him run as his muscles moved in an orchestrated motion. The sweat running down his face. She snapped out of her thoughts but they didn't stop. She watched him slip into the change room and got a wonderful idea. She pulled down her cap and slipped her hood up again and walked into the change room. She diverted her eyes not to see someone changing or anything. She walked the length of the showers and crouched down slightly to check to see which stall he could be in. She saw his feet and laughed. She slipped into the first area and closed the door where she slipped her clothes off and pulled back the curtain slowly. He was washing his hair making the suds run down his back and over his backside and down his legs. Her heart was racing as well of other parts of her that knew that this was so wrong but yet felt so right. She held the curtain back enough to slip in, pulling it closed behind her. She stood behind him then laid her hands on his back. He arched slightly then tried to wipe his eyes. "I better tell you whoever you are, I have a feisty strong willed and so-so beautiful girlfriend. So, whatever you do please be gentle." Charles turned around and towered over her. She looked up. "I was going to shower at home but decided to save on water."
He smiled then leaned in to kiss her. Their kisses sped up encouraging the next step. Charles lifted her up and froze for a second when they heard someone laughing. Their hearts racing as they looked at each other and they became one. It was sweet, raw, and beautiful. They had not been this intimate to this degree since Athens and those memories along with these ones made the experience even more special. Charles kissed the side of her neck making her moan. He kissed her naked flesh as much as he could while holding her. He caressed her breasts, giving them the right amount of attention that they dearly deserved. Trying not to make too much noise. They changed positions which made it even more intense. Sarah reached behind her as Charles leaned over her resting his head on her shoulder. She turned to him bringing him into a passionate kiss sealing the deal. They showered quickly then Charles kissed her once more. "That was, wow!"
Sarah agreed. Charles slid the curtain back. He grabbed a towel slipping around his waist then slipped out bringing back another one for her. He checked to see if they were alone. Sarah peeked out from the shower. He nodded to say that the safe to come out. She made sure her towel was secure as she grabbed her things and followed Charles to the far back where she slipped to the far side away from the aisle. Charles opened his locker; she was thankful that it was a tall door. She stood behind it and dried off getting dressed. Charles slipped his boxers on much to Sarah's dismay. Slipping on his jeans he sat down to slip his socks on and put his shoes on. She noticed his shoes. He was wearing black converse sneakers with dressy jeans. Surprisingly, it worked for him.
He stood up grabbing his shirt. Sarah put her hands on his chest taking one last look. His breathing staggered. "Don't spend too much time there, there could easily be another round."
She too felt that there could be more but shower sex was fulfilling but it didn't scratch the itch. Sarah settled for a kiss as she buttoned his shirt for him. He stood still enjoying the process. Sarah slipped her hoodie on then her cap slipping her hair inside not to show that she was indeed a girl. He grabbed his jacket. She noticed the jacket. "Yeah, I had to wash it just the other day cause I spilled mustard on it." ' He had kept it as it was for that long.' He closed his locker and grabbed her hand. They snuck out with no one seeing them. He looked at her. "Can I drive you home?" She took his hand and they walked to his car. He drove the long way around campus holding her hand shifting the gears together. He parked a few doors down and met her lips. She looked at him. This was the closest he has ever been to actually being able to be at her house. They kissed a little longer till she opened the door. "Good night."
"Good night." Charles caught her look as she got out. She closed the door making him get out. "Sarah what's wrong?"
Charles walked around the front of his car. "It's nothing. I don't want to ruin this wonderful night."
"There's something wrong, what is it?"
Sarah looked at him. "Is this going anywhere?"
"What do you mean?"
"You parking down the road, hiding in the shadows sneaking kisses and embraces, jaunts here and there?"
Charles grabbed her hand. "We're doing the best we can."
"It's not enough. I want more, I want to be able to kiss you in public, wake up with you after we make love and not sneak out of the place where we just had sex. But I can't because of this job and I haven't even started yet."
Charles held her close. "I'm sorry, what can I do?"
"You're the best thing that has ever happened to me and I am ruining it because I want more."
Charles looked at her. "You're not ruining anything; you're trying to hang onto something that is great and there is nothing that needs to change. Yes, I wish that I could wake up with you after we make love, kiss you in the quad and not have to sneak out of locker rooms." Sarah tried to smile as she wiped a tear. "Months ago, when I left you standing in the doorway of a hotel room in Athens, I figured that I would never see you again. And yes, being the hopeless romantic that I am – I said that if it was meant to be we would see each other again and surprise you show up in my line on the first day of CIA training. What are the odds?" He grabbed her hand. " What we have is special, do I wish for more, of course, and why wouldn't I, just like you want and wish for us. Until then we cherish the time we do have together and even if they are far and few. I rather take what we have now then wait for months to see you cause your on some mission like Jakarta in a knife fight and I am who knows where."
He let go of her hand and watched her leave after he kissed her once more. He waited till she opened the door and flipped the light on and off letting him know that she was safe inside.
