Riley and Maya had laughed at the play Isabella was performing when Zay ran through the door into the living room.
"You okay?" Maya asked as Riley fawned over Isabella who smiled.
"Riles, can we talk … alone?" Zay asked as Maya looked between them.
"Come on squirt, let me see that play one more time before I escape through your mother's window," Maya said as she grabbed Isabella's hand and disappeared down the hall.
"Zay-"
"No Riles please let me talk, … I love you … and I know Lucas will always be there and I hate it but I can't do anything about it. I want us to be us, our family just us three always," Zay confessed.
"Zay-"
"Let me finish, let's go home, let's go back home and not look back at this place with nothing of its bad memories," Zay rushed out.
"Josh's funeral hasn't happened yet and-"
"Fine right after, and can we go home? I can't stay here any longer, it brings nothing but bad luck with it," Zay said.
"Did something happen?" Riley asked.
"I was with Lucas," Zay said and he could see the panic in Riley's eyes.
"I didn't tell him about Izzy, don't worry I would never," Zay reassured and Riley calmed down.
"What happened?" Riley asked and she could see the hesitation in his face.
"Allison," Zay lied.
"Allison?" Riley asked.
"He realized what he wanted, and I want to make sure no one gets hurt, especially Izzy," Zay said.
"Oh," Riley whispered.
"Riles, ever since we came here shit has been horrible for us, and we have been fighting and just not us. Don't you just want to go back to that … us, normalcy? I do, I want our routine and just get back to us, our family," Zay said and grabbed her hands.
He squeezed her palms and she squeezed back. Tears were welled up in her eyes and his heart broke for her. She was apologizing back for everything that has happened between them in the last few weeks.
"Break is almost over, we need to go back to school," Zay said.
"Zay, after the funeral we will go back home, us, you, Izzy, and I," Riley croaked and she threw her arms around his neck.
He pulled her into his arms and accepted her apology.
"I'm sorry Riles for all the shit I have done," Zay whispered as Riley kissed his cheek.
It was small but intimate, and something he needed at that moment to reassure him that they were going to be okay. Their moment cut short as Topanga walked in with shopping bags. The two untangled themselves from one another and Riley wiped her cheeks.
"Need help?" Riley asked as Topanga nodded.
"I'll check on Izzy," Zay excused himself.
"Everything better with you two?" Topanga asked as she unpacked the groceries.
"Yeah we just finalized our plans, after the funeral, we will go back to Philly, and get back to normal," Riley said as she placed things in the cabinets.
"So soon?" Topanga asked.
"It's for the best mom for everyone, plus like Zay told me, classes start soon and we need to be in a routine, routine is essential for everyone," Riley said.
"And Lucas?" Topanga asked.
"I gave Maya permission to tell Lucas," Riley said as Topanga sighed.
"Riley it should really come from you," Topanga said.
"I know but if his reaction is negative I rather it can be to Maya, she is so strong and she could handle him, she always could. I can't," Riley said and turned to her mother.
"What happens if it is positive? What if he wants to get to know Isabella? How could he do that?" Topanga asked.
"I haven't thought that far, and don't give me that look either, I don't think he will be positive," Riley said as Topanga gave her a pointed look.
"Give him my email," Riley waved off.
"If Lucas comes here and wants your information Riley, I will give him your phone number and address because it is the right thing to do!" Topanga exclaimed.
"Okay fine but he won't he won't okay mom!" Riley yelled.
"You're so scared that you push away the idea-"
"Yes! I am terrified that Lucas will love Izzy and then realize his separate life with Allison, his future wife, and then their kids and she will just be this … afterthought, and I will protect her from that," Riley said.
"Riley he would never," Topanga said.
"Can we stop, can we not argue, please, can we just talk about the funeral," Riley asked.
"Fine, your father was able to get it for the day after tomorrow so … you can leave this weekend," Topanga said and Riley rolled her eyes.
"We would like for you and Maya to say a few words, if you are up to it," Topanga continued.
"I'm fine with saying something but you will need to talk to Maya on your own, Farkle wasn't even going to show up," Riley muttered.
"Oh of course Riley I will, and you do know we are inviting Lucas," Topanga said.
"Yes," Riley said.
"I think you should tell him then," Topanga pushed.
"Mom!" Riley said.
"Sorry, oh crap I forgot the cheese and some seasonings, I also need to head to the funeral home," Topanga said as she emptied the last bag.
"I can get it, Zay, and I can get it, okay? You go to the funeral home and I will take care of this" Riley said but didn't let Topanga get a word in.
She disappeared from her sight and towards her room. Her chest was tight, and she couldn't fathom the thought of telling Lucas about Isabella. Instead, she needed to escape the home and avoid reality just for a few minutes.
"Zay?" She called as she followed the familiar.
Lucas sat stunned as Allison kissed him goodbye. They walked for a while as she caught him up to date on her work but also how she potentially broke a deal just to see him again. It was a conversation they had to have face to face. They managed to find their way into Topanaga's and found themselves in the corner of the cafe.
Allison wanted to establish what their relationship was, Lucas wanted to figure out his next move. She wanted them to talk more about their problems and create clear boundaries. Allison wanted to plan their wedding and push it for the next month and he sat dumbfounded. Her urgency surprised him but it also put him in a difficult situation.
Here he was right downstairs from his first love, while his now once again fiance gushed about their wedding. He hadn't even given her back the ring, and she left the conversation about fish or beef. His head swirled with mixed thoughts, and how he was going to win Riley back but now … but now he had his stability back.
He sat in the cushioned seat and glanced around the familiar setting. He could see glimmers of his friends in the current patrons. His life played out with different people playing the roles, and he watched in amazement.
"Hey Lucas," Katy said as she walked over with a steaming mug.
"Hey Miss Katy," Lucas said as she handed him the mug.
"Allison looked beautiful, how's everything going?" She asked as he took a sip.
"Confusing, Miss Katy can I ask you a question?" Lucas asked as Katy sat on the edge of the sofa chair.
"Of course honey," Katy said and rubbed his shoulder.
"How did you know Mr. Hunter was the one?" Lucas asked.
"Oh well … Shawn completed me in a way that no one ever has. He also doesn't let me bullshit around either. He is just the right amount of opposite but the same," Katy said and laughed.
"Probably didn't help you huh? Are you and Allison okay?" Katy asked.
"Yeah but … Riley is back and-"
"Your heart, it's interfering I bet. You and Riley always had something that could never be replaced but it also shouldn't be the determining factor for future relationships," Katy said.
She sighed as she remembered Maya revealing about Isabella. She also remembers the hurt in Maya's eyes when Katy revealed she already knew, and how Shawn told her when Isabella was two. Maya was hurt but once Katy explained further Riley's hesitation and her pain, Maya accepted it.
"I think if I knew what I did to push her away," Lucas started.
"Ask her, ask her Lucas, ask her about nothing, just talk to her," Katy said as she stood up.
"You know too huh? Everyone knows this big thing and I am left in the dark," Lucas said and closed his eyes in pain.
"She's upstairs," Katy said and regretted the words.
"Should I?" He asked.
"Yes, go, go and learn everything," Katy said and sighed.
It wasn't her place but she also could not stand the sight of Lucas in pain. As much as she respected the Matthew's decision, it hurt her to see Lucas broken and lost. He had every right to learn about Isabella and now that everyone else knew it wasn't fair to leave him in the dark.
"Thank you, Miss Katy," Lucas said and went for his wallet.
"No honey just go," Katy said as she grabbed the mug from his hands.
Lucas stood to his feet and gave her a bright smile as he followed her advice. His heart directed him to Riley Matthew's and he had to see her. Even if they decided not to pursue their relationship, she could at least explain what happened four years ago. It was the bare minimum and he would be able to get that closure and move on.
As he walked up the familiar pathway to her home, he could feel the rush of memories again. The days he walked up these familiar steps for study dates, or when everyone came over for a game night. Or days when he climbed her fire escape just for those quiet moments where it was just the two of them against the world.
As he walked towards her door, he could hear the blood in his ears. He wasn't going to let her run away, not anymore, and not today. His hand froze as before he could knock on the door, and he started at the door. Was he ready to hear why she left? Could he handle her telling the full truth? He could turn around and not say anything. Turn around and go home to Allison to plan their wedding. It was simple, it was picture perfect, so why was he knocking on Riley Matthew's door?
He knocked and there was no answer, so he knocked hard and he could hear shuffling around.
"Uh it's Lucas," He called through the door and reached for the doorknob.
It turned in his hand and was surprised to see it was unlocked. He pushed the door open but didn't see a familiar face around.
"Mr. Matthews? Ms. Matthews? Auggie … Riley" Lucas called as he walked into the apartment.
He could see grocery bags on the table but didn't see anyone around. He turned when he heard rustling by the living room bay window.
"Auggie?" Lucas called as a small girl jumped up from behind the couch and scared him.
"Oh … I'm sorry!" Lucas said as he caught himself from cursing.
The young girl had long wavy brown hair and was covering her face with her hands. Her grin visible through her fingers and she giggled.
"Hi," Her voice soft but full of joy.
Lucas waved at her.
"Auggie is with Ava in his room," The girl giggled.
"Oh, um I'm Lucas," Lucas said as the girl hid back down behind the couch.
"I'm Isabella!" She cried behind the couch and Lucas smiled.
