Lucas stood in front of the brownstone of his heart and he couldn't move. His heart hammered against his chest and he couldn't move. He attempted one step when he heard his name. He spun to see Farkle behind him with some fruit baskets and a confused look on his face.
"Hey," Lucas sighed.
"What the hell man?" Farkle asked and Lucas was astonished by his attitude.
"What?" Lucas asked.
"This shit you pulled, it's exactly why Riley was scared of and I am disappointed in you," Farkle said and Lucas sighed.
"Alli was sick and shit came up and-"
"There's a kid involved. I don't care what happens! Come on Luke you're better than this and Isabella spent the day in tears," Farkle said.
Lucas frowned and could feel his heart strain from hearing Farkle's words. He didn't want to hurt Isabella, and he regretted not coming soon but he was angry.
"So why the hell did Riley never answer me," Lucas barked.
"She texted you, I know she did. I watched her, Maya watched, we watched as she comforted your daughter," Farkle snapped.
Lucas pulled out his phone and pulled up his text thread with Riley. He shoved the phone in Farkle's face and the genius took the phone.
"This makes no sense, I know Riley texted you," Farkle said and scrolled through the mass of texts that Lucas had sent.
"Maybe the number is wrong," Farkle said and opened Riley's information.
"You gave me the number," Lucas said and Farkle frowned,
"You blocked her?" Farkle asked and Lucas snatched the phone from Farkle.
He could see the settings and the words unblock caller in bright red lettering. He sputtered but the words did not come out.
"I didn't, I wouldn't but … who … Alli?" Lucas sighed.
"Allison would do that?" Farkle asked and Lucas's eyes filled with confusion.
"It's unlike her, but … I didn't do this and she is the only other person who had access to my phone. I also left my phone when I went to the pharmacy. Maybe she is the reason Maya randomly cursed me out," Lucas said.
"You know Riley went to your place right?" Farkle asked and Lucas's eyes widened.
"No! She did? With Isabella?" Lucas asked.
"No just her, she was pissed, Isabella cried for a while until Zay took her out to the park, they should be back soon but I think you should go upstairs and talk to Riley," Farkle said.
"And what tread lightly on the fact that my maybe fiancee blocked her? What kind of disaster would that be?" Lucas asked.
"You owe it to them," Farkle said.
"She hid Isabella not the other way around," Lucas snapped.
"Yes, shitty thing to do but Izzy doesn't need to be the one who hurts," Farkle said.
"I better go talk to her, both of them," Lucas said.
Farkle pointed a fruit basket in the direction Lucas should walk and he did. As Lucas walked up to the Matthews apartment, he could feel his stomach twist. He didn't want to argue with Riley but he knew it was going to happen. Farkle turned the doorknob and let himself in. Lucas followed and he saw Maya and Topanga in the kitchen arranging flowers.
"Oh look who decided to grace us with an appearance," Maya gritted.
"Maya, it's not his fault," Farkle said as Maya crossed her arms.
"Alli blocked Riley," Farkle said as Lucas just stared at the blonde.
"What the hell?" Maya asked as Topanga looked uncomfortable.
"Riley is in her room, Lucas," Topanga said as Lucas nodded.
"Uh hello?" Maya said but Farkle placed his hand on her shoulder.
"Later Maya," Farkle said and gave Lucas the green light to go and talk to Riley.
Lucas maneuvered in the familiar apartment and found himself in front of Riley's door. He knocked softly and heard Riley's voice allowing him in. He opened the door and spotted Riley packing some things up. She didn't look up right away but when she did, she glared at him. Lucas sighed and walked into the room. Riley stalked over to him and slammed the door shut behind him. She turned to him and placed her hands on her hips.
"What the fuck?" Riley asked.
Lucas had never heard Riley speak like that to anyone. Sure she raised her voice, but vulgar language wasn't her thing.
"Relax," Lucas began.
"Relax? Izzy cried, Lucas! I won't relax!" Riley exclaimed.
"I'm sorry," Lucas offered simply.
"That's it?" Riley asked.
"I want to talk, I don't want to argue Riley," Lucas said.
"You hurt our daughter," Riley said simply and Lucas flinched.
"There are things I allow but I will protect Izzy with everything I have. I get it you're having a whole new baby, and Izzy wasn't really a part of your life but she deserves at least some common decency," Riley huffed.
"How do you know about that?" Lucas asked and Riley could see that Lucas paled over.
"It's a pretty common thing, I mean decency just look it up and-"
"No Riley, about the new baby?" Lucas asked.
"Allison mentioned it, congrats, but if that's going to be a thing, the least you can do is tell Izzy that something came up and you can't play the role of a father right now-"
"Just because Alli is pregnant doesn't mean Izzy is erased. I can balance it," Lucas said cutting Riley off again.
"Yeah because that worked so well today," Riley said and rolled her eyes.
"Alli wasn't feeling well and-"
"And you made a promise to Izzy! Look, I called and texted you. You chose to ignore me," Riley snapped and crossed her arms.
"I didn't … look, don't freak out," Lucas pleaded.
"What?" Riley asked.
"Alli blocked you from my phone," Lucas rushed out.
Riley didn't say anything but Lucas could see she was upset over his words. Her shoulders deflated and she uncrossed her arms. Before Riley could say anything further, her bedroom door flung open and Isabella walked in.
"Mommy! Uncle Zay bought me a new doll," Isabella said and rushed over to Riley.
"Um Izzy," Riley began and turned Izzy to Lucas.
"Hey," Lucas said and bent down to Isabella's level.
"Hi," Isabella whispered and Lucas could see the tears in the little girl's eyes.
It pulled at his heart and she held the doll Zay bought her underneath her chin. Her bottom lip trembled and Lucas wanted nothing more than to hold her tightly.
"I am so sorry Izzy," Lucas said.
"You broke a promise, mommy says we don't break promises or tell lies," Isabella said.
"Daddy is so sorry, I can make it up to you, maybe this weekend-"
"We're leaving earlier than planned, we are going to leave right after the funeral," Riley announced and Lucas looked around.
He had noticed she was packing up some things but now he could see it was basically all done.
"Riley!" Lucas snapped.
"What! You thought I was just going to stick around because you knew?" Riley snapped back.
"You can't just take my daughter from me! You already took four years!" Lucas yelled.
Isabella began to whimper and Zay walked into the room. He didn't say anything to either party and picked up Isabella. He soothed her and walked out of the room with her. Lucas turned back to Riley who had her hands on her hips.
"I need you to go," Riley said.
"Fuck that! You were just going to leave!" Lucas snapped.
"I planned to tell you today, oh oops your pregnant fiancee took precedence over that!" Riley said sarcastically.
"Stop that!" Lucas yelled.
"What?" Riley yelled back.
"Pushing me away!" Lucas snapped.
"I can't do this with you Lucas, go," Riley said and pointed to the open door.
"No, you can't just take her from me, you stole enough time," Lucas said.
Before Riley could yell at him, Zay walked back into the room sans Isabella.
"Everyone can hear you, Luke, maybe you should go," Zay said softly.
"Oh you stay out of this," Lucas snapped at Zay.
"Luke," Zay began.
"You fucking knew this entire time, and you didn't tell me shit!' Lucas continued.
"Yeah! She needed me, they both did," Zay said.
"They needed me not you," Lucas said and Zay flinched.
Zay's eyes darkened for a second and neither guy said anything. Instead, Zay clenched his fists and Riley stepped in between them. She placed her hands on Zay's face and held his gaze on her.
"Please don't," Riley whispered.
Lucas couldn't help but feel rage surge through his body at their moment. It clawed at his heart, watching them share a moment, a glimmer of what he had with her. Zay sighed and nodded. He moved around Riley and unclenched his fist and looked at Zay.
"You remember something man! That little girl means everything to me, and you will not get to walk in here and start demanding shit," Zay said.
"She's not your daughter," Lucas said and Riley watched Zay flinch again and she felt it too.
The elephant in the room, one of the sources of their problems. The truth, but it triggered something in Riley.
"Don't say that to him, you don't get to come in here, and expect life to change," Riley said.
"Yes I can, you stole time away from me Riley. Whether you two want to admit it or not. She is my daughter too, I have a legal right to her, and I expect a lot of change. You just can't take her away, how is that fair to me or her?" Lucas asked.
"You're having a whole new baby!" Riley snapped.
"Alli's pregnant?" Zay asked.
"A new baby doesn't replace a kid, I can do this, and you have to let me do this," Lucas said.
"I don't have to let you do anything," Riley snapped.
"Yes you do, because I will take you to court," Lucas snapped back.
"I dare you," Riley sneered.
"Guys,"
The three turned to see Maya and Farkle in the doorway.
"Stop it," Farkle added.
"Farkle-" Lucas was cut off by Farkle's hand.
"One, we can hear everything. Two, both of you are wrong," Farkle said.
Both Riley and Lucas glanced at one another before they looked back at Farkle.
"Riley has every right to be upset Luke, this is her fear, Izzy being an afterthought. You think you can balance it but Riles has been doing this for years. She has a better insight into what being a parent actually is. However, Riles, Luke is right, you did steal years from him, that he can't have that experience to help him be a good dad. At the end of the day, you guys need to look at Izzy's well-being. I come from a single-parent household, and as much as I love my mom, a part of me needed my dad. I am so sorry to say this Zay, but your Uncle Zay, not her dad. This is a mess on top of a molehill of shitfest, but you all need to think about what's best for Izzy, and not your feelings about this situation," Maya said.
"Maya's right," Zay mumbled.
"Look after the funeral tomorrow we can talk okay?" Farkle said.
"Okay," Riley said and Lucas grumbled.
"I'll wait," Riley said and glanced at Lucas.
"Luke?" Maya questioned.
"Tomorrow it is," Lucas said.
