"I was wrong! You're not an idiot, Kuze-kun… t-the idiot was me…"
He couldn't believe what he was seeing.
It almost felt like a dream of some sort.
A dream that he'd wake up from at any second, because there's no way that this was actually happening.
"Я тот, кто беспомощен, когда я один…"
—but it was, and he couldn't deny the undeniable taste of satisfaction that he felt from seeing this girl in her current state.
As much as he wanted to deny it, he couldn't stop his lip from curling upwards into a visible smirk.
Seeing her like this was giving him a twisted form of pleasure that he unknowingly liked.
"Please… I'm begging you…"
The once proud and willful Student Council President, whose beautiful face and iconic silver hair that were admired by many in their school, was on her knees in the dogeza position.
He couldn't see her face but he could hear her sniffles, a clear sign that she was crying.
"Don't throw me away… I can't survive being alone…"
Naked as the day she was born, Alisa Kujou willingly prostrated herself as a way to show her remorse for her actions.
Her actions towards the one person who has always been by her side for the past two years.
The one person whom she can't survive without.
Masachika Kuze groaned in displeasure as he struggled to carry a pile of lumber back to the house. He had already made several trips to the forest and back doing this for the past hour, with this being the fourth and final time.
Suffice to say, he would rather be somewhere else, helping whoever needs him instead of carrying all this wood.
"Why do I have to carry all this lumber again?"
He turned towards his companion, who didn't seem to care that he was having a hard time.
"Again, it's for the raft that we'll be constructing in the future."
Chisaki Sarashina explained the reason for why they were collecting the lumber, to which Masachika sneered.
"If we're not gonna build it right now, then why bother collecting this stuff in the first place?"
"It's only for special cases in which we'll need it! Just think. We can use it when we want to go fishing for food, or if we want to go look for a ship out there and fire off a distress flare for help."
Masachika thought about those reasons and while they kind of made, he wasn't totally convinced.
It's not like they were in dire need of food at the moment, and last he checked, they can't go firing off distress flares every time they see a ship in the horizon.
Therefore, there must be another reason why Sarashina-senpai wants to build a raft!
"You sure it's not because you want to go looking for Kenzaki-senpai yourself?" he asked her.
"Wha—?! D-Don't be ridiculous! There's no way of knowing where Touya is so how would I even look for him?"
"But you must miss him, right?" he pressed on. "It's quite alright, Sarashina-senpai. I can understand why you would feel that way. He's your boyfriend, after all."
The former student council vice president blushed at his teasing words, before shaking her head furiously to snap herself out of it.
"Okay, that's enough, Kuze-kun. Less talking, more carrying!" she exclaimed, delivering a hard chop to his shoulder that nearly caused him to drop the load he was carrying.
"Ow! You didn't have to do that!"
"You were saying some embarrassing things instead of focusing on your work," Chisaki explained her actions calmly.
All Masachika could do was roll his eyes and hang his head in defeat.
"Why do I have to do this…"
Chisaki smiled and patted his shoulder, the same one that she chopped just now. "You're the only guy around here, so you're the most suited to doing physical work."
"That's a horrible stereotype and you know it. I'm the farthest thing from being suited to do stuff like this."
"It's not a stereotype, Kuze-kun. Science has proven that men are just more capable than women in physical activities."
"But you were part of the Kendo club, weren't you? The captain of the team, at that. If anything, you're more suited for these things than me."
"Of course I do a lot of carrying and other stuff, I'm just tired right now. I haven't even had lunch yet!"
At that exact moment, Masachika felt his own stomach growling, making him turn red in embarrassment.
"...right, you haven't. Me neither, actually. I'm sorry for what I said."
"No worries, Kuze-kun. But I want you to know this…"
Chisaki slung her arm around his shoulder and pulled him into a side-hug, catching him by surprise.
"...because you're the only guy around here, everyone is counting on you. I'm counting on you. Honestly, we wouldn't have made it this long if you weren't with us, Kuze-kun."
If he was feeling tired before, he certainly didn't feel that way now! Though they were just words, it brought a smile to his face and made him feel a lot better inside.
"Thanks, Sarashina-senpai."
"No problem!" she grinned. "What do you say we go eat lunch inside the house after you're done carrying this?"
"Sure. I was getting hungry, anyway."
"Good to hear! Now after we eat, you should go help Masha-chan and Alya-chan with the farm. We need to plant a new batch of crops ASAP."
"I'll see what I can do," he shrugged.
The pair made their way to the beach, where all the materials needed for the construction of the raft were placed. There wasn't much yet, because the plan was relatively new and they weren't in any rush to build it.
After dumping the last batch of lumber with everything else, Masachika followed Chisaki back to the lodge to have lunch.
Before stepping inside, Masachika looked out into the clear horizon, where nothing but the beautiful ocean and clear sky were all that he could see.
"Almost a month has passed… and nothing's changed."
Masachika took a deep breath and headed inside, while thinking back to how this all came to be.
Several weeks ago, before Seiren's summer break, his younger sister Yuki had invited the entire student council to a three-day trip at a private lodge located at an island that's owned by her family.
After getting over their initial shock at learning that Suou's family was rich enough to own an actual island, almost everyone was confused why she would even invite them on a trip like that.
Yuki explained that because it's their final year in high school, they should make the most of it… and that she had already made arrangements for the trip ahead of time.
All that's left were the names of the people who were interested in coming along, really.
After getting over a second wave of disbelief, the other members of the council collectively decided that it would be a waste to turn down the offer for a luxurious vacation, so most of them raised their arms to show that they wanted to come along.
Not all of the council members were able to commit to the trip, with some of them citing several reasons why; from their family wanting their presence to being under the weather.
The ones who were able to come along were Alisa (President), Sayaka (Public Relations), and Nonoa (General Affairs). Of course, Masachika (Secretary) and Ayano (Treasurer) were already included due to their respective relationships with Yuki (Vice President).
Apart from them, there were three familiar faces who tagged along for the trip. Maria Kujou, Alisa's sister who graduated from high school a year ago; Touya Kenzaki, the former Student Council President who ran two consecutive terms; and Chisaki Sarashina, the former Captain of the Kendo Club and a former Student Council Vice President.
Everyone met up at the school gates on Saturday morning, where they were picked up by a tourist bus and headed to Tokyo harbor.
There, almost all of the council members were taken aback at the small cruise ship that was waiting for them, and all they could do was marvel at the person who made all of it possible.
While Yuki told them that their praises weren't necessary, Masachika hid a smirk to himself.
His sister had a knack for surpassing people's expectations, and she's damn good at it. Yuki's a genius in her own right and part of it is because that old fossil expects a lot out of her.
Anyway, during the first two days of their stay, everything was normal and all of them enjoyed everything there; from the luxurious house overlooking the ocean, the sandy beach where all kinds of fun things can be done, the lush forest behind the house that's perfect for hiking, and the peaceful atmosphere that can't be found in the suburban environment.
They enjoyed the trip for what it was and made the most of their time, just like what Yuki intended for them to do. Even the uptight Taniyama allowed herself to let loose and have fun.
However, tragedy unexpectedly struck by the third day.
Several hours before dawn could arrive, a very strong typhoon hit the island out of nowhere, bringing heavy rain and powerful winds that didn't allow an ounce of sleep for the people there.
The storm was strong enough that it caused the tide to rise, several trees from the forest to fall over, and everyone inside the lodge to work together in order to weather through it.
Needless to say, that typhoon began a string of bad luck and unfortunate situations for the people on the island, especially for the stranded students of Seiren Private Academy.
