Third person view/The next morning

Hiccup, with a large basket on his back and the thing he had spent all night working on under his arm, walking into the cove where the Night Fury was sleeping.

His brother wasn't in their father's house when Hiccup returned home nor when he woke up. He even checked his house to see if he had spent by the night there but there was still no sign of him.

At first he thought about waiting until after training to go see the Night Fury. However he caught sight of his brother already doing the daily jobs in the village.

He seemed to be okay but hiccup would make sure tonight. For now he had to test something

"Hey Toothless, I brought breakfast. I hope- I hope you're hungry" he panted setting the basket on the ground as the Night Fury got up and looked at him curiously.

However once he tipped the basket over and a bunch of fish spilled out, the curiosity turned to hunger as he licked his lips.

"Okay that's disgusting. We got some Salmon, some nice Icelandic Cod and a whole smoked eel" Hiccup said, trying to sneak to the rear of the dragon.

However once the dragon's nose got close to the black and yellow eel, it let out a low growl and backed up. Curiously, Hiccup picked up the eel and held it up to the dragon who now shrieked and opened it's wings in fear.

"No No no no no no! Okay!" Hiccup said throwing away the eel. He then tried to touch the dragon however the eel's scent was still on his hand which made the dragon growl.

"Yeah I don't like eel much either" he added wiping his hand on his vest as the dragon went back to eating the fish.

"Okay. That's it. That's it, just stick with good stuff. And don't you mind me. I'll just be back here... minding my own business" He said walking to the back of the dragon. He then set the device on the ground next to the tail and tried to move it closer only to have the tail move away.

He looked up just in case the dragon had done it on purpose but found the Night Fury was still eating the fish, all of which were almost gone.

He tried to move the device closer once again however the dragon kept moving the tail so he jumped on it to try and keep it still however the tail was still stronger and threw him off as the dragon pulled forwards to get his snout inside the basket to get the last of the fish.

Finally it stayed still long enough for Hiccup to begin getting it strapped on. Something the dragon immediately noticed as he went rigid and the basket fell off his head.

He wiggled his tail slightly and, to his confusion, it felt heavier. Like he still had both his tail fins.

Finally Hiccup got the device strapped on and opened it up to reveal he had built the dragon a new tail fin made of metal and cloth.

He opened it up and smiled at his work, unaware the dragon was opening his wings preparing to fly.

"Okay. Eh, it's not too bad, it works" he said to himself as the dragon launched into the air, the young boy clinging to the tail for dear life.

However the tail wouldn't stay open on it's own and the two began to drop, heading straight for the cove's wall so Hiccup reached out and spread the tail out and kept it open with his hand.

Immediately the two switched direction and soared upwards just barely hitting the ground and cove wall.

"Heh, it's working" Hiccup said smiling, despite the fact that he was high above the tallest trees on the island.

The two then flew back down and above the pond in the cove.

"Yes! Yes, I did it!" Hiccup said loudly which the dragon heard and looked back. Seeing he still had his human passenger, the dragon made a quick turn which sent Hiccup skipping across the water.

However without the human there to hold the tail open, the dragon also crashed into the water.

However despite being thrown as rough as he was, Hiccup celebrated with a cheer.

"Yeah!" he yelled while the dragon looked unamused.

"Today is about teamwork!" Gobber said as a different Dragon pen opened. This time grey-ish gas flowed out of it and into the area where the teens were in groups of two.

Snotlout and Tuffnut, Astrid and Ruffnut, and finally Fishlegs and Hiccup.

And once again, DJ stood at the top of the area looking in at the new recruits.

"Now a wet Dragon head can't light it's fire. The Hideous Zippleback is extra tricky; one head breathes gas, the other head lights it. Your job is to know which is which" Gobber said.

"The only good thing about this is that the grey gas around you isn't flammable anymore. The flammable stuff is bright green" DJ said as the teams were now fully consumed by the gas and could only see a few feet around them. As Hiccup and Fishlegs kept watch for the dragon, Fishlegs nervously rambled facts about the dragon.

"Razor sharp, serrated teeth that inject venom for pre-digestion. Prefers ambush attack, by crushing its victims-" he said until he was interrupted by an on edge Hiccup.

"Would you please stop that!?" he yelled, a bit of his older brother coming out enough to shut the bigger teen up.

"If that Dragon shows either one of its faces, I'm gonna-" Snotlout was saying until he seen a shadowy figure with horns in the fog.

"There!" He said as he and Tuffnut both threw their buckets at the figure. However instead of a roar, they got two feminine shouts of shock and then anger.

"Hey! It's us idiots!" Ruffnut said as the girls stepped into view of the two guys.

"Your butts are getting bigger, we thought you were a dragon" her brother said laughing.

"Not that there's anything wrong with a dragoness fig-" Snotlout was saying until Astrid came up and punched him in the face, sending him to the ground while Ruff threw her bucket at her brother, also sending him to the ground.

He looked up with a dazed look until he was suddenly pulled back into the fog and the girls heard him begin screaming in pain.

"Wait!" Astrid said to Ruff who went to help her brother. Astrid got her bucket ready, However a tail whipped out from the fog tripping them and causing Astrid to dump her bucket.

Just then Tuff ran past the down girls and past a scared looking Fishlegs and Hiccup.

"Oh! Oh, I am hurt! I am very much hurt!" He yelled out as the gas began to disappear and was replaced by normal air.

"Chances of survival dwindling into single digits now" Fishlegs said as a green Zippleback head came out of the gas and focused it's gaze on him.

He screamed and stumbled back as the head followed him until he remembered the point of the exercise and threw the water on the head.

The mouth of the Dragon then opened to reveal a green gas.

"How about next time, you wait!?" DJ yelled before putting his head into his hands. This cannot be the next generation of viking warriors, can it?

"Oh wrong head" Fishlegs said chuckling nervously. The Dragon then shot him with a blast of the bright green gas and the boy screamed.

"Fishlegs!" Gobber said as the Dragon continued to shoot the gas at the boy as he ran past Hiccup but it then stopped in front of Hiccup where it was then joined by a second head.

This second head opened it mouth quickly allowing it's teeth to grind against each other to create sparks.

"Now Hiccup!" Gobber said as Hiccup charged forwards.

"Wait not at that angle!" DJ yelled only for it to be too late as Hiccup threw the water up at the dragon's head. However because it was towering over him and he didn't have the muscles, the liquid didn't make contact and instead fell to the ground in front of him.

"Oh come on" Hiccup said slumping his shoulders as the Dragon roared and lunged forwards while he fell onto his back.

"Hiccup!" Gobber yelled rushing forwards as DJ once again slid through a gap in the chain link top. He then landed in a roll before immediately straightening up and taking out one of his axes to throw at the Dragon.

However he, just like everyone else, froze in shock. The Dragon was backing away from Hiccup almost like it disliked the smell of him.

"Back! Back! Back!" Hiccup said getting to his feet and pushing the Dragon back towards it's pen.

Unaware to everyone, the village elder, Gothi, was watching from up above with a look of interest. She was an old small woman with long gray hair and a large staff that she used to walk and draw as she was a mute.

"N-Now don't you make me tell you again. Yes that's right, back into your cage" he said getting the Dragon back into the cage. He then opened his vest to reveal the eel from this morning.

"Now think about what you've done" he said throwing it inside to which the Dragon back away to the furthest corner from the eel.

He then closed the door before turning around, wiping his hands on his vest. Only to see the shocked looks of everyone, Fishlegs dropped the bucket he was still holding onto and his brother still had his arm back to throw the axe.

"Okay, so are we done? 'Cause I've got some things I need to uh... yep! See you tomorrow!" He yelled out as everyone still just stood there with shocked looks on their faces.

"Uh, have you ever-" DJ began but was interrupted by the older Viking.

"Once, and your father was covered in the blood of a Nightmare and screaming like a mad man" Gobber said.

"Okay, just making sure" he said nodding.

Over the next week Hiccup and Toothless bonded more and more.

He made a leather saddle for the dragon which at first he refused to put on but in a playful 'can't catch me' manner.

Finally after getting it on, the two them went for another flight, this time with Hiccup in the saddle and controlling the tail with a string.

However a hard pull forwards, caused the dragon to go flying to the side while Hiccup remained going forwards.

Later that night, he made an attachment for the saddle where he could hook onto a loop and connect it to a belt he wore so that day wouldn't repeat itself.

The next day the two tried flying once more. However Hiccup still hadn't mastered controlling the tail and the two crashed into a field of long grass.

Hiccup found himself once again unhooked from the dragon and realised that and ran back to where they had landed only to find the Night Fury rolling in the grass in a sort of daze, trying to get as much of the scent as he could.

Curiously Hiccup took a handful of grass and stuffed it into his vest pocket.

Later that day at training they were back up against the Brown Gronckle who headbutted Tuffnut away before it set its sights on Hiccup.

It flew towards the boy who held up the fistfull of grass and braced just in case it didn't work. The dragon dropped to it's belly right in front of Hiccup and sniffed the grass, it's pupils becoming bigger as Hiccup rubbed the grass on it's noise before he move the grass to the right, the dragon following and falling onto it's side.

Up above the arena, both Gothi and DJ looked at the scene with interested looks on their faces. More Vikings also appeared beside them and looked in, having heard about the Zippleback incident and needing to see it for themselves.

As they walked away from the arena, the other teens immediately crowded around Hiccup with interested expressions and questions about how he did that, with the exception of Astrid.

However Hiccup wasn't used to all this kind of attention and felt uncomfortable so he quickly made an excuse about leaving his sword in the arena and ran back down the walkway.

The next day he was petting and scratching Toothless on the neck and head. Hiccup then scratched him underneath his neck and immediately the dragon dropped to the ground.

At first he was worried that he had hurt the dragon until he seen him still breathing and with a dazed smile on his face. Hiccup smiled as he realized it was his sweet spot.

Later in training they were back up against the blue Nadder who charged at Astrid and Hiccup who was behind her. She threw her axe however the dragon used it's crown of spikes to deflect the weapon away.

It continued it's charge as she rolled away to grab her weapon while Hiccup dropped his sword.

The dragon then stopped in front of him and sniffed, confused by both him dropping his weapon and by the scent of the mostly solitary Night Fury on him.

However both dragon and boy then heard a scream of rage and seen Astrid was charging with her weapon.

Hiccup quickly began scratching the dragon on the neck which it liked before hitting toothless' sweet spot, which was also the Nadder's sweet spot as it dropped to the ground immediately, leaving a confused Astrid just on the other side of the dragon.

That night in the dinner hall Hiccup sat down with his brother at an empty table. However he was immediately surrounded by teens and adults alike and his brother had to stop his meal to play bodyguard.

At the now empty teen table, Astrid angrily slammed her mug down and let out a huff. Hiccup was now doing as well, if not better, in training then her and he was getting more popular around the village.

The next day Hiccup laughed in amusement as he used a hammer to reflect sunlight onto the ground which Toothless chased and pounced on like a cat.

Later that day

"Meet the Terrible Terror!" Gobber said as another log was raised from a dragon pen. However a door only the size of a bucket high then swung open as a small green dragon crawled out.

It moved on four legs and had a skinny body and tail. It had a line of fins going down it's back and had two small horns on it's head.

The little dragon licked it's eye and looked around at the tall humans before it who were all laughing.

"Ha it's like the size of my-" Tuffnut began before he was tackled by the dragon who bit his nose while the rest of the class scattered.

"Ow! Get it off!" He yelled as the Vikings above laughed, remembering their own experiences as teens when they too underestimated the little dragon.

Suddenly the dragon's eye caught sight of the sun reflecting off something and chased the light. The source then revealed to be the metal on Hiccup's shield.

"Oh! Oh I am hurt, I am very much hurt!" Tuff said holding his nose and running to the rest of the class while Hiccup led the small dragon back to it's cage.

"Wow, he's better than you ever were" Tuffnut added rubbing his nose as the rest of the class watched Hiccup.

At his comment, Astrid gave him a glare before seeing Hiccup had lead the dragon back into the door and was now keeping it shut with his foot.

Later that day Astrid took her anger out of the trees in the forest, throwing her axe at them with yells of fury.

As she rolled and prepared to make another throw, she seen Hiccup standing in her way, carrying a bundle wrapped in cloth under his arm.

He quickly took off as a curious Astrid followed him. However as he disappeared behind a rock and Astrid quickly got on top of it, she found that he had quickly disappeared into the forest.

Angry and frustrated, she slammed her fist down on the rock with a huff.

In the cove, Hiccup ran a rope from the fake tail to the saddle of the dragon while said dragon had his head inside a basket of fish.

Later that evening, hiccup and toothless flew in the wind, a rope having been tied to a treestump and to Toothless so they only floated in the air.

Hiccup then moved a petal with his left foot which opened the tail up wider.

They then landed and Hiccup wrote down on a sheet of paper the position of the tail and the foot movements he needed to do for the position to happen.

However as they went back to 'flying' a huge gust of wind came and the rope snapped, sending both dragon and boy back into the trees.

Both were dazed but unhurt. However Toothless got up, Hiccup's body went with him and as Hiccup looked, he seen the hook he used to stay on the dragon had bent and would now not release.

"Oh great" he muttered as he hadn't brought any tools with him to the cove.

Once it got dark, the two then made their way into the village keeping toothless in the dark as the Night patrol went by.

It was hard as the dragon was curious about everything in the village, but the two finally made it to their destination: The Forge.

However moving a large dragon into a small building wasn't quiet and Astrid heard a large crash as she was walking by and knew there was only one person who could've been inside at this of night.

"Hiccup! Are you in there?" She called out just as Hiccup had began trying to unbent the hook. Not knowing what else to do, the boy did the only thing he could think of.

"Astrid! Hey!" He said jumping out the customer window but immediately shut the doors so Astrid couldn't see inside.

"Hi Astrid. Hi Astrid, Hi Astrid He said as Toothless peered around the corner of the door and seen a sheep who also saw him and froze mid bite.

"I normally don't care what people do but you're acting weird" she said as Hiccup was pulled back towards the shutters as toothless moved. He chuckled nervously as Astrid had a slightly weirded out expression on her face.

"Well weirder" she clarified with a pointed stare. And then, to her shock, Hiccup was pulled backwards again and even up into the air against the shutters before he was pulled back into the shop out of her view as the shutters closed behind him.

She quickly ran forwards and opened the shutters to reveal... an empty shop. As she was looking around inside, Hiccup was behind her riding away on Toothless with an arm full of tools to unclip the hook.

Later that night

After returning to the cove and finally getting the hook unbend, Hiccup began making the long walk back as the dragon immediately climbed into a tree and began sleeping.

Getting to his house and opening the door, he was surprised to see his brother still awake and sitting at the table.

"Hey, you're back" he said smiling.

"Yeah, went for a walk in the forest and I got a little distracted" Hiccup sorta lied.

"Still looking for that Night Fury?" His brother joked.

'Oh if only you knew' Hiccup thought before answering.

"No, I gave up on that long ago" he said leaning against the wall.

"Heh, Yeah, okay. Hey, nice job in training today. A lot of people underestimate the Terror because of it's size but as Tuffnut found out, it don't mean anything" DJ said with a smile as Hiccup returned it before trying to go up the stairs.

"Oh yeah, Astrid came by" he added making Hiccup freeze midway up the stairs.

"Uh, oh Yeah?" He asked coming back down.

"Yeah, she wanted to know if you were here and if I was training you. I guess she's just as shocked as the rest of the village is" DJ said.

"So... what did you tell her?" He asked.

"I told her you weren't here and even if I was training you, that's not against the rules of dragon training since I'm your brother and I don't know what order of dragons Gobber will throw at you guys" DJ said.

"Okay, thanks DJ. Um, are you shocked about how well I'm doing in training?" Hiccup then asked sitting at the table.

"Honestly, yeah. I mean I thought you would do decent eventually but I didn't think you would be tied with Astrid for the honor of killing the Nightmare" he said before reeling back like he had just said something he wasn't supposed to.

"What?" Hiccup said shocked at that information.

"Shit! I shouldn't have said that. Forget you heard that" DJ said.

"So the others are out?" Hiccup asked as DJ sighed knowing his brother wasn't going to drop this.

"Yeah, they'll probably get put on sheep duty at least as well as fire crew though so that should keep them happy, but in the full on fight against the dragons, you and Astrid are those two mature enough to handle that" DJ said grabbing his mug and drinking.

'Great' Hiccup thought. He needed to let Astrid win no matter what now. Or... tell his brother what was really happening and maybe he could help Hiccup figure something out.

"Well I'm gonna head for bed" Hiccup said getting up and going back up the stairs. He would decide on that later.

"Alright, have a good sleep" DJ said raising his mug.

Early that morning

A Viking on night patrol yawned loudly as he stopped at the cliff to take a break. Another hour and the sun would begin to rise.

Suddenly he seen something in the sky against the stars. He strained his eyes to see what it was but realized that there was more than one shape against the stars. And they were high in the sky.

"Gods above no, not now!" He said rushing back to the village.

A few seconds later a loud horn rang out through the village waking up everyone.

In the Haddock household both bothers woke up and straightened up at the same time, they had heard that horn a lot of times in their lives and immediately knew what it meant.

"Dragons" they both said.
