TThe hunters wasted no time. They immediately got into the final preparations for the confrontation.
Dean was down in the basement; he had been working in the ammunition with the Phoenix ashes. All the contents from the bottle were scrapped and put into bullets.
Then he got to work with the ashes left by Abaddon in that burned circle. They were not sure if those ashes were as well Phoenix ashes, but they gathered them either way and set them apart just in case.
While Dean worked on the ammunition, Sam and Bobby were trying to track down the Mother of All, also known as Eve. Now, they were ready to face her. The question was, where was she hiding?
The Mother of All is an ancient being. She spent her days idly in the unknown realm of Purgatory. Recently, she was summoned to Earth by a cabal of powerful dragons. Since her arrival, she had wreaked havoc where she went, leaving a trail of destruction in her wake.
The Mother of All remained elusive despite the Winchesters hot on her trail. Her ability to conceal herself made her a formidable adversary, always one step ahead of her pursuers.
That day Bobby and Sam came to the basement to check on Dean and help him with preparations.
-How is it going?- asked Sam
-We have those five shells from the original Phoenix ready. -He answered wearily. -I put the other ashes in these containers. If we need them, they are ready as well- he shows them glass vials, boxes of bullets, and smoke bombs.
-Well, that's a lot more we were doing last week-
-Maybe…-
-Meaning?- asked Bobby
-I just had a little mishap, and that….well, look! - Dean took some ashes from the original and rubbed them in his forearm. Nothing happened.
-Oh!- Bobby said intrigue.
-Now watch what happened with Abaddon's – Dean said, grabbing a knife from the table and slicing open his hand. Sam and Bobby watched with concerned expressions. Dean quickly scooped up some ashes and pressed them to the wound. A soft red glow illuminated the wound as it began to heal. Bobby and Sam watched in amazement. When the light went off, Dean cleared his palm. There was nothing there; his wound was completely healed. -This stuff is supposed to burn the bejesus out of Eve. This one didn't even get me a sunburn, while this one heals you… Why?-
Sam took his hand and examined it. Not even a scar was left. -Did it hurt? Was it painful?-
-No…it felt more like warm spreading through my hand. It's actually comforting and very soothing. A little smile appeared on Dean's lips as he passed his thumb over the palm of his hand.
Sam and Bobby stared at him.
-What?- he complained.
-It sounded like you just had a very personal experience that you should only share with yourself – said Bobby. Dean rolled his eyes -I'll cut you, and you let me know…-
-Back off!-
-Do you believe it's because she is an angel?- intervened Sam trying to get the conversation back on track.
-meaning?- asked Dean.
-Well, she is not a Phoenix. I think…She is supposed to be an angel, so maybe those are not Phoenix ashes at all but angel ashes-
-So, we got miracles in powder?- Dean concluded
-Could be…I mean – Bobby sighed. – Historically speaking, we have no records of angel ashes being of any use to anybody…maybe some rituals, very dark ones, but not especially for healing. Folk tales about the phoenix say they have the power to heal and even grant eternal life. They were supposed to be hunted for it-
-Wasn't something about its tears?- replied Sam.
-Yeah, that was Harry Potter…Real mythology doubts the bird had any healing power at all. It was more about bursting into flames and regeneration. Later additions are the ones that grant them healing powers- Bpbby informed.
-Okay, whatever!- interrupted Dean, feeling left out of the conversation – The point is, we are Alice in Wonderland here; I mean, one is supposed to burn, and the other one heals?-
-The book says it works- defended Bobby
-yeah! And just as you made your little exposition there, the books also said that it was supposed to be a bird, not some cowboy. I'm starting to think our sources are a bit off…-argued Dean.
-Well, maybe this is like iron or silver, you know? It hurts them, not us -Sam appealed.
-Maybe, but I would feel a lot better if we could prove it before jumping into action…With the original ashes, we only have five counted bullets. That's it! There is very little room for mistakes, but we have a complete arsenal with Abaddon's. Only now, I wonder, if I used them, would I burn Eve to a crisp or give her a full spa experience…-
- …I guess it could pay to try to summon the big guns now…- said Bobby, Sam watched him carefully – I mean, Eve is proving to be tricky to find; there are too many fires now in different places, all happening at once…maybe the angels would able to point us in the right direction…who knows, maybe illustrate us in the use of ashes on the way?- suggested Bobby.
-ha! That would be great…- muttered Dean – if it wasn't for their disappearance acts…- he was fidgeting with one of the smoke bombs distractedly.
-…Have you…- Bobby paused – have we tried to call them?- Bobby redirected at Sam. He shrugged and looked at Dean.- I think we should try using that red phone…see how Batman is doing…-Bobby and Sam felt silent. They were staring at Dean.
-Ha! So, Robin would be Abaddon…?- he chuckled, his laughter died down when he placed the smoke bomb back at the table and noticed Bobby and Sam staring at him. -Why does it always have to be me who makes the call, huh? Is not like Cas lives in my ass! Dude was last seen unconscious, disappearing with freakish Abaddon, and hasn't even bothered to report back.…- Not has he finished the sentence when Sam and Bobby's eyes open wide. Dean turned around to find Castiel standing behind him.
- Cas! Get out of my ass!- Protested Dean startled.
-I was never in your….- he began and fell silent when Dean gave him a weird look. He remembered their infinite talks about private space and the uses of human irony.
-Uuu! Let me try!- Abaddon's voice said from somewhere.
-Balls!- expressed Bobby as he turned around. Sam did a little jump backward. She was standing right behind them. She laughed.
-NO…no…bad Aby! You do not take on Cas bad habits- protested Sam.
She kept laughing -You guys are fun!-
She looked much better now, still pale but much more perky. Her hair was still white, but there was a strand of color coming from the front of it; it was something in between red and yellow, like a sunrise, and it was shimmering slightly like it was burning.
Sam was caught by it; he moved his hand without thinking to touch it. It seemed unreal… Castiel appeared in between them and stopped him.
-Oh! So sorry, it's just that…New hairstyle?- Sam asked her.
-Is a side effect…It will disappear soon- answered Castiel.
-Or that is what the doctor said…and by a doctor, I mean Baltazar…who apparently knows everything nowadays…- intercepted Abaddon and moved around to inspect the bullets on the table behind.
-Well, I am happy to see you two are doing okay-…and Balthazar, I presume… -Sam said, relief evident in his voice.
-Is more than that…Just look at them- Dean said, amused – She's been officially inducted into the club. So, is the trench coat your signature uniform? Is Balthazar wearing one too?- he teased, pointing at Castiel and Abaddon, both clad in similar coats.
-He was weary of me coming here half-naked,- Abaddon explained. -So, I listened to him and raided his closet.- Castiel rolled his eyes, a sigh escaping his lips. Everyone turned to look at him.
-Now that you mentioned…Dean…maybe trench coats are not really my style. What about this?-
She was now wearing a black shirt with a checked flannel on top, blue jeans, and boots. Sam and Bobby held their breath; they recognized the outfit right away. Their eyes darted at Dean.
-Are those…are those my clothes!- he exploded.
-hum…they are okay, I guess- she looked down at herself – And you know, Cas, he has a drawer full of the most curious shorts I have ever seen. They have pockets in front…I wonder why…but they are very comfortable…-
Oh no gosh!- Bobby turned around, laughing. Sam was barely containing himself. Dean was mouthing.
-SHE IS WORST THAN CAS…- he cried out loud to Bobby and Sam.
Castiel walked at her -I think you made him upset.- Castiel looks over his shoulder at Dean; Abaddon peeks from behind him and giggles. He was glaring at them.
-I think you should better give his clothes back…He is very sensitive about private space and stuff…-
-NO, no, no you keep them! Why are the both of you here? Explain now.- a vein popping in his forehead.
-First, he is crying about us not visiting, and now that we are finally able to make it here, he's just all rude and mean…Maybe I don't want to explain anything…- Abaddon turned around.
Castiel sighed, frustrated - You insisted we needed to come, so here we are…Can we please move this along?-
-I insisted? Oh right! Yeah…have you guys made any progress in locating Eve?- Abaddon turned back and crossed her arms with a smile.
-As of matter of fact…We were going to ask the same question to Castiel about that- replied Bobby.
-She is hidden from me. She is hidden from all angels- answered Castiel.
-Awesome!- exclaimed Dean
-Well, if angels aren't an option, maybe an inside man could help,- Abaddon suggested.- You've been hunters for a long time now. Surely you've come across some of them.-
-What do you mean?- asked Dean.
-Something with claws and sympathy-explained Sam
-Like a friendly monster?-
Sam shrugged.
-We are in short supply these days, don't you think?-
-Sure, but we met one or two, right?-
-Maybe…- Dean gave it a thought.
Abaddon scoffed -Do you guys always kill everything on sight?-
-Well, monsters are monsters…- Dean protested.
-Really? You never sat and talked to them…See what their real motivations are?-
-Their real moti….THEY were killing people!-
-Sure, uh-huh….No questions ask…I see. So, how did you manage to find those few friendly ones? Wait! Don't tell me, I bet the poor things were involved somehow in a bigger scheme…and you managed miraculously…not to kill them- she mocked.
-Hey! We were just doing our jobs…- bounced Dean back.
-I bet you tried to kill Castiel the first time you met him… Even though…he meant you no harm- Abaddon said, a smirk playing on her lips. Bobby and Sam exchanged a knowing glance, their eyes lingering on Castiel, who stood there with an air of quiet dignity.
-It was all a big misunderstanding- defended Dean.
-I wasn't even there the first time…- mumbled Sam.
-Okay, that's enough of that!- jumped in Castiel -First of all, that was a long time ago. I hope by now the point has been made across that I am not a monster, nor do I mean ANYBODY harm…- Sam, Bobby, and Dean looked at each other -Second of all, you said it yourself.- He turned at Abaddon - They have lived a life of warriors and vagrants; at every turn of a corner, something is trying to kill them…so it is reasonable that they distrust everything. It seems to me you understand very well from where…are…they…coming…- Castiel's voice died out as he noticed it. Abaddon's eyes were shimmering red; it felt like he was looking at someone else. Something was not right.
-Sure thing…But this is the time and date, and they still distrust you, Castiel- Abaddon walked at him – Even if you do things right, if you never hurt anyone – she turned at Dean – even if you were just passing by the bank that morning, minding your own business….They will still come after you and kill you.- Dean clenched his fists, his breath held. Abaddon circled the hunters, her gaze predatory. -If you fear it, you kill it. If it's more powerful than you, you pretend to be friendly until you find a way to destroy it. That's a neat little trick, isn't it?- her voice distorted, her eyes locked on Castiel.
-Castiel!- Dean called. His eyes darted between Abaddon and him. He knew something was off, and that was when he noticed Castiel's stand. It was somehow defensive, and he sternly looked at Abaddon. Bobby and Sam exchanged nervous glances.
-Abaddon,– he said softly and approached her. He extended his hand at her and barely grazed her arm when she burst into flames. That was the end of Dean's borrowed clothes, but it wasn't like she was naked; she was engulfed in fire.
-Ah!- Castiel backed up, holding his hand. It was badly burnt.
-Castiel! The room is getting too hot- Bobby warned and turned to the table full of ammunition.
The flames were up to the ceiling. Castiel calls Abaddon again, holding his injured hand.
She seemed to recognize his voice; her eyes looked at him and fell on his burned hand; she snapped out of whatever was happening. Castiel hurried and took his trench coat, casting it over her shoulders. Abaddon's flames turned blue and simmered down. She looked spellbound at Castiel in front of her.
-Abaddon…- he softly called. He was looking into her eyes. They were empty now. His hands slid down to her arms, and he was engulfed in the blue flames.
-Castiel!- called Dean, alarmed from behind them.
-Oh! I did it again, didn't I? – Abaddon seemed to come to and observed Castiel also surrounded in blue flames, but they were not hurting him-Wow! This is new…- she admires.
-Can you control it?-
Abaddon took a deep breath and closed her eyes. She concentrated; there was rage and frustration inside. Then a woman's voice was calling softly from the very back of her mind. Abaddon could not understand what it wanted or what it was saying, so she heard intently. Her heart started pouncing wildly; something about that voice was alluring and, at the same time, scary. It was drowning her, like she was being diluted into something much bigger.
-Abaddon!- Castiel's voice cut through the noise in her head. He shook her gently, and she slowly opened her eyes.
-Weird- she said, and with a deep sigh, the fire was finally extinguished.
Castiel sighed in relief and turned around. The hunters were looking at them, a mix of confusion and concern on their faces.
-It's a side effect. It'll pass- his voice devoid of emotion. Though his words were reassuring, his tone was unsettling. Dean sensed the oddity. He got upset, but, just for now, he said nothing.
– Do you know of any monsters we could contact?- Castiel went back on track to the topic.
The search started. One after another, whomever the hunters could conjure in their minds that might be of any help, the angels searched for them, but as time passed, the list was getting reduced very quickly. Castiel and Abaddon were jumping from one place to another, only to find the subject dead or disappeared. Finally, Castiel came back with a lady. She was dressed in rags, looking scrawny, faced smudge, and her hair unruled. She looked frantically around and tried to escape.
-Lenora!- called Sam. -Wait…Stop…Look is us!-
She looked at them at a loss.
-It's been a long time…Do you remember us?- Dean walks to her.
She took a moment before answering -I remember. Your hunter friend almost killed me-
-Well, if it makes you feel any better, he turned into a vampire, and I chopped his head off…- answered Sam.
-yeah! With a razer wired…It was wicked- said Dean, feeling somehow proud but getting a disapproval look from Sam.
-Well, that is something…What's going on? Why am I here?-
-Well, uhm, that's Cas, he is our friend - Sam explained. Lenora glared at Castiel, her abductor -We need to talk to you about Eve- Sam continued.
-EVE! I have nothing to say about Eve…- the sole mention of that name rattled her.
-You sure about that?- intercepted Dean.
-I am trying to stay away from her…believe me…-
-Where's your nest?- asked Sam, concerned.
-Gone…They couldn't fight it anymore…- her tone was the saddest -It's her voice in our head…what it does to us. So they left, started killing again…-
-But not you…- tried Sam to cheer her. She was one of the good vampires, hunting animals for sustenance instead of humans.
-Don't look so impressed…- her voice dropped – I was hiding in a basement when your friend found me…You don't know how hard it is not to give in… Everyone gives in…- Castiel was standing by, his eyes shadowed.
-About this psychic tool you have going – intervened Dean -That means you know where mom is kept out?-
-You've got to be kidding me. You want me to tell you where she is? You do know she could be listening to us right now. I might as well be a video camera. Uh! What are you thinking?-
-So we may not have the element of surprise -commented Bobby -we're still going in-
-You're crazy! I can't help you-
-Can't or won't -intercepted Sam. They stared at each other -Look! It's clear as day, you still give a crap. You don't want to kill, and you don't want this whole planet dead…-
-You actually believe you can stop her?-
-just tell us where she is…- pleaded Sam. Lenora gave it a moment's thought -Grants Pass, Oregon- she finally answered – and now she knows you are coming-
-Let's go…- said Bobby, and the boys made it to leave.
-Hold on! I didn't tell you this out of the goodness of my heart…I need something…-
-What?- asked Sam
-Kill me- she simply said and approached him, her eyes begging.
-Lenora…-
-We are lucking down when this whole thing is over. Witness protection: you will be safe – assure Dean.
-You don't get it; it is not about that. I am dangerous. I hear her voice all the time…-
-You are not like the rest of them…- argued Sam
-I AM EXACTLY like them… I fed. I couldn't help it. The girl couldn't have been more than sixteen Sam…I'll do it again…- her voice cracked.
-Even if Eve is gone?- came a voice, and they all turned around. Abaddon had returned and was standing by Castiel's side, listening to the conversation. Lenora gasped and backed up.
-Wait! She is a friend….like Cas– Sam intervened. Lenora looked at her in fear, even more so than Castiel.
-Wouldn't you be okay when she is gone?- Abaddon approached Lenora. Lenora backed up nervously and started to cry.
-No…I can't stop…Not anymore…YOU have to kill me, please -implores Lenora, clinging to Sam.
Sam was heartbroken; Abaddon noticed it.
Lenora did not even resemble what she once was; her bonny figure was covered with rags instead of clothes. Her sunken eyes with dark shadows underneath told the story of a vampire that had fallen hard and was begging to be released from misery.
-Lenora- Sam pleaded. She looked up at him. At that moment, her eyes sparkled, and light came out of them. Castiel's hand was on her head. Sam, Bobby, and Dean couldn't look. Her face melted away as her life was driven out of that body.
She felt hard on the floor—her face smoking. Sam, Abaddon, Bobby, and Dean looked at Castiel, appalled.
-We needed to move this along- he said, not a single feeling in his voice.
Sam, Dean, and Bobby prepared the bags with all the guns, protection, and ammo they could carry. Dean stopped when he reached the ammunition he had prepared with Abaddon's ashes. He doubted to take them.
-Take them- he heard her voice over his shoulder and turned around, surprised.
-Aby you need to stop following Castiel's examples.- he protested.
-Sorry, Dean- she said quietly and took one of the glass vials and examined it.
-Do you…Do you think it could help us against Eve?- Dean asked. She looked up at him and paused.
-I don't know myself Dean – she put the vial in his shirt pocket – But, you should take them just in case.- she walked to Castiel where the rest had gathered. Dean put Abaddon's ashes in a separate bag.
Sam, Bobby, Dean, Castiel, and Abaddon arrived at Grants Pass. They appeared in the town plaza. They looked around. It was a suburb; children played on the streets, and people quietly walked around. The church bell ringing.
-Well, I was expecting more Zombiland…less Pleasant Ville- commented Sam.
-Just because it looks quiet, doesn't mean it is -said Bobby -Especially if she's got a clue we are coming.-
- Well, even if she is, I'm glad we have the mighty Mcsmithers in our squad -Dean pointed at Abaddon and Castiel, who looked at each other in turn -Well, where do we start?-
-I am going to need a computer…- said Bobby
Moments later, they were installed in a booth at a dinner. Sam and Dean were having something to eat. Bobby had a tablet and was working his way around it. Castiel was by the window looking around while Abaddon was squished between him and Sam, looking curiously at Sam's food.
-Alright! I finally got the police data-informed Bobby -Not thanks to this…I asked for a computer-
-It is a computer- refuted Sam, offering his chips to Abaddon; she had taken one and was now munching it.
-No! A computer has buttons…- Bobby argued. Sam and Dean looked at each other and agreed.
-Anything?- continued Sam. Some of his chips have migrated to Castiel.
-Nothing weird…basically a dead end- answered Bobby -Think Vampira was lying?-
-I'll search the town- intervened Castiel -Give me a moment…-
Bobby resumed his search in the database; Dean was having his steak while Sam was now battling for his chip.
All this happened while Castiel was still sitting there with eyes wide open.
-Cas, we can still see you- said Dean.
-Yeah, I'm still here- he answered, confused.
-Okay, you don't have to wait on us-
Castiel took a deep breath, cleared his throat, and closed his eyes, concentrating.
-Well, now it looks like you're pooping- declared Dean
-You poop with your eyes shut?- Abaddon asked Dean with real concern. Sam and Bobby chuckled.
-NOT the point!-
-Something is wrong- finally said Castiel.
-What, your stuck?- asked Dean
-I'm blocked…I'm powerless- declared Castiel.
-You're joking!- said Dean, everybody at the table confused.
-Something in this town…is affecting me…Eve is here-
-Wait, is mom making you limp?- continued Dean
Castiel took a second to answer that -figuratively…yes-
-How?-
-I don't know, but she is…-
-Well, that is great because, without your power, you are basically a baby in a trench coat…- Castiel said no more. He became upset and turned around to the window.
-You hurt his feelings -whispered Sam. Dean rolled his eyes.
-And what is your excuse?- he addressed Abaddon. She was now looking preoccupied at the counter.
-What is more powerful than an angel?… One could argue an Archangel, but that is the obvious mundane answer…An ancient being is superior to both…- Abaddon looked at Castiel -The two of us just walked into a trap. This is going to get much more trick than we thought- hahaha- she laughed nervously and went back to Dean -…at least dear baby boy here could still be of help but I…I just become expendable…- She looked back at Castiel and vanished quietly, leaving behind specks of red ashes. Castiel's eyes peeled open. Sam stood up out of the booth- ABY!- he called, and everybody in the dinner turned around to them.
-Where is she!- Castiel shouted, emerging from the booth, his eyes scanning the room frantically. His gaze fell upon the counter, beyond which lay the kitchen. A static sound began to fill his ears, growing louder and more intense. He felt a sense of helplessness wash over him as he struggled to move. His heart pounded in his chest. His eyes were turning white. His sword appeared in his hand.
-Castiel!- Dean and Sam shouted, their voices distant and urgent. Dean grabbed Castiel's arm and pulled him out of the diner. Castiel stumbled out, gasping for air as if he'd been pulled from the depths of the ocean.
-Sorry! The tacos were very spicy. Sam apologized to the people at the dinner and followed Dean outside. Bobby was close behind.
-What the heck!- muttered Bobby when he reunited with the group. Dean was trying to hide the sword. Sam was helping him sit Castiel on a nearby bench.
-Castiel…What just happened?- asked Sam. There was a fine black dust still in the air following Castiel.
-She took her- Castiel gasped, grabbing onto Dean.
-You mean Eve? Why would she take Aby?- asked Sam confused.
-It has to do with those ashes she gobbled down, hasn't it?- Dean confronted Castiel.
Castiel stared at him and stepped back. He looked at his sword in Dean's hand -I need to find her…- he tried to take his sword from Dean.
-Wow! Hold your horses…- Dean stop him – Now is not the time to be irrational. You heard Aby. We just walked into her web; We need to be careful about our next move -
-Which is?- Castiel asked impatiently.
-I got something here…maybe- intervened Bobby. Something he was downloading finally popped up on the screen. -I had to go to Federal to get it. A call when out from a doctor's office to the CDC last night…-
-About what?- asked Sam
-A doctor, Silver, called about a sickness he could not identify. The patient is a twenty-five-year-old, and his name is Ed Bright – Bobby turned around the screen so everybody could see the patient's identification. They see a young male man with dark skin and afro hair.
-Well, that's not much to go on…- said Dean
-But at least it is something- said Sam
-before we go- Dean took Abaddon's bag and pulled out some of the glass vials – I think we should all hold on to one of these…just in case- he passed around, and he gave one to Castiel along with his sword. Castiel took it and put the vial in his chest pocket.
-Are you going to put that thing away any time soon?- Dean asked, seeing the sword still in Castiel's hand.
Castiel looked at it – I can't- was all he answered.
-Can you at least hide it? People are starting to wonder- Sam approached.
Castiel looked around, then reached into his trench coat pockets, only to find them too small. He sighed and tucked inside his pants -humm- was his sole comment.
Dean sighed -Ok, let's go. It's time to hunt down some bitchachas-
Castiel lingered, his gaze fixed on the diner.
The group split to cover more ground. Castiel and Dean went to Doctor Silver's office. They found this lady coming out from it, closing it.
-Excuse me, is Doctor Silver in? My friend is very sick- Dean approached her.
- I have a…painful burning sensation- explained Castiel with a straight face, his voice monotone. Dean shot him a murderous look.
-Oh well! He is out, sorry- said the lady.
-Do you happen to know where he is?- push Dean
-He hasn't called in…- the lady explained- you might want to find yourself some ointment- she recommended Castiel and left.
-What kind of doctor calls CDC and then disappears the next day…- Dean commented to Castiel -let's have a look, shall we?-
They went around the building. Dean pulled his lock-picking tools and worked his magic in the back door.
-Is this going to take a long time?- asked Castiel. Dean turned around to give him an annoyed look, but his eyes fell on something on the floor behind Castiel. Dean went to inspect it and crutched near it; it was blood. They followed the trail, leading them into a tools shed. It was closed. Dean broke in.
Inside, there was a body in a plastic translucent bag. Dean peeks into it. It was the guy Bobby showed them on the tablet. He was not breathing anymore, and his skin was covered in painful-looking boils. Most of them exploded.
-patient outbreak…- noted Castiel.
-What kind of doctor calls in the CDC and dashes a good corps in the shed?-
They looked at each other and, in turn, at the corps, confused.
Meanwhile, Bobby and Sam were inspecting the doctor's house. Bobby took a photo from the top of the chimney. The doctor was there with his wife and two children. They could not find anything particular around the house.
-Hi there!- called the deputy as Sam and Bobby walked out of the property. -Who are you?-
Bobby and Sam showed him their FBI badges -You're casual Friday agents?- asked the deputy jokingly. Sam and Bobby were wearing their normal clothes instead of the black suits they would usually wear while in the FBI fake characters.
-We were in a case some miles out. We got a call to come here- Sam explained
-So, how about you? What's your business- asked Bobby.
-Oh! The doctor is a friend of mine. He didn't show up for work today, so I stopped by to see if he's sick-
Not sick…missing- informed Bobby
-Missing?- repeated the deputy -Says who?
-Says me, empty house, no backpack, the car still in the driveway…- enumerated Sam.
-How did you get on this?-
-Is a long story, tell you what, once it has been put out, we should compare notes in the station…Sound good?- intervened Bobby.
-Uhm…yeah! Sure-agree the deputy.
-Obliged…- Bobby salute.
The deputy left.
-Wow, talking about talking it out of your butt…- Sam admire.
-Yeah, just hurry, agent…- called Bobby, and they went on their way. In the meantime, Dean and Castiel were parked on the University's grounds. They had rented cars to move faster around town. Bobby and Sam parked next to them.
-Ok, so we have a missing angel, a missing doctor, and we have a dead patient in a shed…- Dean resume.
-Yeah, the plot thickens- said Sam
-Well, let's see what his roommates have to say- Bobby replied.
Castiel was looking out the windows of the building when he saw something weird pass by and turned around to ask the group - Did Ed Bright have a brother?-
-No, why?- responded Bobby
-Then that is not his twin?- Castiel pointed out at the dorm's window. There was a guy looking through it that was exactly like the body they had just found in the doctor's shed. The person was looking sick like he was throwing up.
-So what? A shifter?- asked Sam
-I don't know what we are looking at -said Bobby
-All right, Dean and I are going to go in; you two stay and watch the doors; something comes out, shot it- organized Sam.
-And best get silver bullets- commented Dean
-I am unfairly unpracticed with firearms -said Castiel
-You know who whims? Babies – Dean padded his shoulder and, with Sam, went into the dorm.
Dean bashed through the door, followed by Sam, both holding their guns out. They stepped into the living room only to find a bunch of similar-looking guys dead with exploded hideous boils on their bodies.
-Don't touch anything!- warned Dean
Well, at least most of them were looking dead. There was that one by the window still breathing. Sam rushed to him.
-Hey! - called Sam. The guy coughed violently.
-Ed.. what's going on?- Dean came and kneeled beside him.
-What? I am not Ed…- the guy managed to say. -My name is Tod…Tod Marshall. What's wrong with me?- said Tod.
-Nothing! You're OK, we need your help- replied Sam.
-Do I…Do I look like them? Like Ed?- said Tod, looking around to a room full of Ed's doppelgangers piling dead on the floor.
-What? No, no, you have a fever. You are hallucinating- said Dean, trying to calm him down.
-Marshall, what happened here?- asked Sam
-Am I gonna die?-
-No, you are not going to die. You need to speak to us; it's important -compelled Sam.
-Ed was feeling bad, so he went to see a doctor- Marshall started coughing and twitching. -I think we are now all sick…-
-You think?- asked Dean
-But before you got sick, before Ed got sick. Did you go anywhere, did you do anything?- quickly added Sam. Marshal expelled blood from his mouth -Hey! I need you to concentrate…- called Sam.
-Some bar…- Marshal answered weakly
-A bar! What bar?-
-Eight street…- gargled Tod
-Did anything happen at the bar? Did you see anything? Did you meet anyone?- Marshall continues coughing his lungs out.
-Hey! Help is on the way – tried Sam to comfort him.
-A girl…- finally answer Marshall.
-A girl? Okay and?- jumped Dean in
-A girl in white…-
-Okey…what did the girl in white do, Marshall? What did she do to Ed?- called Dean, but Marshal was now gasping for air.
-Marshall!- Dean called, but Marshal closed his eyes, and his head slid down on the sofa he was sitting on. That was the end of the interrogation.
Sam and Dean gathered with Bobby and Castiel outside.
-I don't get it!- complained Dean -There's a bunch of regular Joes who wake up to shifters? What the heck!-
-Shifters usually run in families…This looks like an infection. Nobody touched anything?- asked Bobby.
-I'm bathing in Purel tonight- commented Dean
-So, he said they met a girl…- continued Sam
-Well, it got to be Eve…-said Dean
-Why would she do this?- asked Castiel
-Mommy monster…make more- analyzed Bobby
-No, no, no, Castiel has a point; if she is going to make a shifter army, why make one that is sick, gooey, and dying?-
-Add that to a pile of crap that doesn't make sense- answered Bobby.
-So, we should hit the bar?- asked Sam. They all agree.
The doors open violently, and the group of hunters step into the bar. The floor was covered in blood and dead bodies. The place was a mess.
-Wow! You would think the Sheriff will notice this many folks missing…- commented Bobby as they slowly walked into the massacre.
Dean squatted near a lady. Her mouth was covered in blood. He took a piece of wood from the mess lying nearby and checked her mouth -We have a vampire here!- he shouted as he uncovered her pointy teeth. -No! Scratch that, it's a raver- he corrected when looking at her wrist, he found a pointy bone sticking out like a claw. He let go of the arm of the lady – What the heck? What have teeth and a spike?-
Bobby was standing next to Dean; he was confused, too -I've never seen that in my life!-
-Oh great! So she is making hybrids now?-
-It looks like it!-
-The question is why, what does she want with them? What do you call this?- asked Dean
-Well, congrats! You just discover it. You get to name it…- was Bobby's sole answer. He turned around and went with the others.
Dean gave it one second thought before he said – Jefferson Starships- Sam gave him a weird look. Bobby turned back at him -Huh?-
-Because they are horrible and hard to kill- Dean smiled proudly. Sam sighed, rolling his eyes.
-Looks like the whole bar has turned into this…-
-Jefferson starships- interrupted Dean
-Fine! Why are all the...Starships dead?- Sam asked.
-Can't say, but…it looks like they are all burnt up- pointed Bobby
-Burn up? Like…- asked Dean
-Like a high fever, like the flu- explained Bobby.
-What the heck is going on here? Have every monster in this town a virus?- Dean squatted again to another body at the end of the bar
-Hands where I can see them!- shouted the cops that had just stepped into the bar. Bobby and Sam raised their hands. Castiel looked at them all, confused, but did not raise his hands. Dean hid behind the bar.
- This is not what it looks like- protested Castiel
-We are the feds- explained Bobby
-Yeah? The feds are not allowed to do this- said the cop, pointing at the dead bodies -cuff them!- ordered the deputy to the other two with him. Castiel, Sam, and Bobby were taken away. Dean came out from his hiding spot behind the bar after they left.
In the commissary, the three police officers were escorting the three suspects to their cells.
-Listen! If you let us make a phone call, we can straighten it all out!- explained Sam
-Straighten out a massacre?- mocked the police officer.
Just as they walked into the office area, which was empty for some reason. Sam's eyes fell in a round mirror up on the wall. The reflections were odd; the officers' eyes were shining, and he understood why. He immediately headbutted the officer escorting him and shouted -Jefferson Starships!- and everybody attacked.
The brawl erupted, each officer struggling to subdue the prisoners. Castiel was pinned against the wall, his movements restricted by handcuffs. But then, a change came over him. His eyes glowed red like fire. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath; as he exhaled, a small cloud of ash, still glowing red, escaped his lips. Castiel touched the handcuffs, and they melted away. With practiced ease, Castiel broke free and turned on the officer, drawing his sword from his pants, to the officer's surprise. In a swift, clean motion, the officer's head rolled to the ground.
Dean entered the police station just in the nick of time. He saw Castiel swiftly move to aid Bobby. The police officer was viciously hitting the man. Castiel lunged forward, decapitating the officer with a single, precise strike. The cut was clean, leaving no trace of blood. Castiel pushed the body aside, his movements efficient and deadly.
Dean didn't even have time to react. Next thing he knew, Castiel had the last officer by the hair and the sword on his throat, about to slice it open.
-Castiel, wait!- Sam called out. Castiel paused, his eyes still glowing with a fiery light like Abaddon. Sam quickly fumbled to his feet. -Wait!- Sam repeated, urging him to stop. Castiel lowered his sword, and the officer snickered. Castiel's eyes flashed with anger, and with a swift, brutal move, he bashed the officer's head against the floor.
"Did you... did you kill him?" Sam asked, his voice laced with concern. Castiel glanced down at the fallen officer, then back at Sam. His eyes were back to normal. -No, he's just unconscious,- he replied calmly, wiping his sword clean from the blood.
Dean moved to them. Castiel saw him coming and turned around at Bobby to help him with his handcuffs.
-What did you call him this morning…a baby?- Sam commented when his brother reached his side. Both fixed at Castiel, watching as he put back his sword into his pants.
-I am as impressed as you are- murmured Dean
Sam nodded -he may not know his way around guns, but he is very skilled with that sword, and there is something else- Dean looked at Sam curiously – Did you notice…his eyes?-
Dean sighed – Yes…-
Dean and Sam helped the officer up. He had a nasty cut on his forehead, but other than that, he was okay. They moved him onto one of the interrogation rooms nearby.
The survivor officer was handcuffed in the interrogation room. He came back to consciousness a few minutes later when Bobby smacked him. He was looking all conceited despite his situation. Bobby was sharpening some knives.
-I'll say this…You're the healthiest looking specimen I have seen all day- Bobby walked around the table in front of the officer branding his knives.
-I did my vitamins- the officer snickered.
-So, you want to tell us what's going on here?- Bobby walked to him, pointing his knife at the officer -So, you boys are Eve's cleaning crew? Is that it? You come around and clean up the bodies? Make sure the word doesn't get out. Is that why you snatched up the doctor?-
-You are wasting your time…- the officer snorted – you stupid cattle-
Something fell somewhere, and everybody turned around.
-More starships. Said Dean and went out of the room to investigate.
-Stay here- said Sam to Castiel and went after his brother.
The brothers moved around quietly but fast. They went around the office area until they reached the cells. In one of them, they found the doctor´s sons all tied up.
-Silver's boys!- said Sam -All right, don't worry, we are going to get you out of here, okay?- approached Sam. Dean tried the cell door, but it was closed, so he stepped out to find the keys.
-Look! We are not going to hurt you.- Sam put his gun away.- My name is Sam, and that's my brother Dean. Dean came back with the keys. -Those cops…They are not coming back…ever- he assures them. Dean opened the cell, and they stepped in.
Dean took the gag from the elder brother and Sam from the youngest one.
-What are your names?- Sam asked
- Joe – said the eldest – This is Ryan…-
-Hey you Ryan, how are you doing?- asked Dean to the boy. He lowered his eyesight.
-He won't talk...Not since they came for us- informed Joe.
-Okay, listen, Joe. We are going to get you out of those handcuffs…You understand what is going on around here, don't you? So first, we need to make sure you are you…-
-How are you going to do that?-
-There's a few…dozen test…- All brothers looked at each other respectively.
-Okay, let's get started…-
Bobby crossed the sheriff's face with his knife, making him bleed.
Hahaha -You think that's going to make me talk- laughed the sheriff.
-Something will- answered Bobby.
-I got a couple of hungry human boys here!- announced Dean when they came back, followed by the kids. They pass by the interrogation room towards the sheriff's office.
-So, you never heard them talk about a mother or someone named Eve?- asked Sam as they sat in the office. The boys were given snacks from the vending machine outside.
-It was just…me and Ryan in there- answered Joe. Castiel was listening, standing at the door's frame.
-and your folks?- asked Dean
-Cops said we were next…- was Joe's answer, then turned around, looking sadly at his brother -He said we're their food-
-You've any other family?-
-An uncle in Merrit…-
-Merrit? That's like 15 minutes outside of town- commented Sam
-Okay…we'll get you there- said Dean when Castiel called him apart.
-Dean, a word…- they moved away from the children.
-We need to find Eve first- he pressured, but Dean did not fall for that.
-Yeah, go!- he said calmly -Me and Sam are just going to make a milk run.
-We need your help here…- Castiel insisted.
-We'll be back in a few – was Dean's sole answer, and he moved away.
-I see…You are aware that those kids will be in danger even if you remove them from here…As long as Eve is still around…-
-Are you kidding? What would you have me do? Abandon them here to fence for themselves or take them with us when we don't even know if we'll survive? I mean, look at you; you've lost your mojo. Sure, you can wield a sword, but that's all we've got and five bullets…- Dean lased out.
-There's a greater purpose here…-
-You know…I am getting sick and tired of the greater purposes, okay? I think what I'd like to do right now is to save a couple of kids…- Dean sighed -I know you are worried about Aby…- Castiel looked at Dean attentively -and so are we… but I just want to keep these kids out of my mind safe and sound so I can concentrate…That's all I ask…We'll catch you up…- was all Dean said and turned around back with Sam and the kids.
-Okay, guys, let's go…- call Dean. The children follow him, and then Sam. Castiel was frustrated, and he let it show.
Sam and Dean departed with the kids in the back of the seat. Bobby and Castiel remained in the commissary. Time passed by, and nobody showed up. It was Bobby, Castiel, and the straship cop in that whole place. Castiel was by the window looking outside.
-They won't take long.- Bobby came into the office after another interrogation session with the prisoner.
Castiel turned around – you don't know that…They may find wayward orphans along the way-
-Oh! Don't get cute…-
-Right! Pardon me for highlighting their crippling and dangerous empathetic response with sarcasm-
-Crippling and dangerous? I thought angels would be the most empathetic beings in the world. My bad, I might be reading the wrong book -Castiel sighed, frustrated -Come on Cas, you know Abaddon is a strong-willed woma…angel…-Bobby corrected himself- she will be fine…-
-You don't know that either!-
-I believe it! I thought angels live on that stuff…- Castiel felt silent and walked slowly to Bobby.
-She is a prisoner and is all alone with no powers; we should have prioritized her instead... This only demonstrates to me how much you humans really care…-
-Now Castiel, you're being unfair…-
-They just ran along with some kids because they couldn't concentrate if they were around….It was a bad idea to let them go…-
-Come on! You don't let Sam and Dean Winchester do squat; they do what they gotta…you know that- Bobby tried to comfort him, only it did not really feel like it to Castiel -Those kids deserve to be in someplace safe. Besides, Sam and Dean are seasoned hunters; I'm pretty sure they did the math before making any decision. Eve took Abaddon; she took her for a reason. She can't be dead, and you know this.- Bobby confronted Castiel. He looked at him attentively.
- In any case, if we want Eve, we need coordinates so we can stab her belly aching when we go poke that bitch until she squeals. We need that cop to spill the beans before the boys come back- Bobby rested his case. Castiel said nothing; he was feeling human impotence firsthand. If he had his powers, he would have gone directly to Eve…but now, he had to submit and wait, or so he thought; there had been something in his mind for a long time now; he felt the vial in his pocket.
He sighed and walked away from Bobby, going back to the window. He pulled out the vial from his trench coat pocket and examined it. Bobby quite understood where Castiel was coming from. It must be very difficult to adjust to these circumstances, knowing his friend might be indeed dead by now and not being able to do anything for her. Bobby shook the thoughts out -No! She must be fine…or at least still alive- he said to himself.
Meanwhile, in Merrit. The children reunited with their uncle. Sam and Dean bit them goodbye and went right back to Grants Pass.
-You know, she can see you right now- remind the cop to Bobby and Castiel -you are just making her mad-
-Tell the bitch to come and get me…- taunted Bobby. The cop laughed. Nothing Bobby had been doing so far was effective, and he was running out of ideas.
-I need five minutes alone with him- finally asked Castiel
-What for?- Bobby walked up to him and whispered -Cas… your batteries are dead-
Castiel sustained his sight -Five minutes…- he muttered.
-Al right…Fine!- Bobby walked out of the room. He was drinking juice from the machine in the next office room when he heard the chilling screams of the cop. A few minutes later, Castiel walked out, cleaning the blood on his hands and sword with a piece of rag. He gave Bobby an address.
Up to this point, Bobby has been administering pain to that thing, only for that cop to be laughing; suddenly, powerless, Castiel goes in, and within five minutes, he is able to pull out an address. Bobby was speechless. Maybe they all underestimated the angel; maybe he was powerless, but not without resources, concluded Bobby.
-I'll go now…- Castiel said dryly.
-What? No, Castiel, the boys must be on their way back by now. Let's wait for them. Besides, what can you do by yourself?-
-I have been wondering, and I kind of have a theory that I might want to try…- he opened the vial with Abaddon's ashes and gobbled them down. As the ashes passed through his mouth and down his throat, his being lit in a soft red light that spread all through his body.
A pair of white wings sprouted from his back. His sword was shining in his hand. Bobby was stunned.
-Castiel…- Bobby babbled.
-I'm done waiting…- Castiel turned around and disappeared.
It wasn't long before Dean and Sam came back, only to find the body of the cop sitting dead in the interrogation room with no head.
-Castiel did that?- asked Dean -rigorous interrogation, huh?-
-Well, we got a location…- said Bobby
-And Castiel?- asked Sam
-On his way there…or already there most likely-
-You let him go by himself?- repaired Dean
-You got me as surprised as you are. I didn't know myself angels could also be so hot-headed…you two know he is sweating balls for Abaddon, right?- Dean and Sam looked at each other- I know those boys were a priority for both of you, but you've got to understand his position. An angel with no powers and no means to save his friend…That could potentially be dead by now…-
-Abaddon is NOT dead?- interrupted Dean -She is a strong-willed…angel…She's fine!-
Bobby looked at him with a mix of admiration and proudness. -What's he to do?- was all Bobby managed to say.
-He is supposed to WAIT tight here for us, and then we all bang that bitch's door together…- protested Dean.
-But that is not what you or I would have done…right?- asked Sam softly. Dean looked at him and was disarmed. Sam was right; if it had been the other way around, he would most likely have done exactly the same.
-That's not the only thing…- continued Bobby – He took Abaddon's ashes and swallowed them…-
-What? Why?- the two brothers said in unison.
-He had a theory he wanted to try…and he did. Next thing I knew, he sprouted wings and disappeared…-
The brothers were looking at Bobby, flabbergasted.
-He flew away?- Dean stammered, disbelief evident in his voice
-I didn't say he flew… He vanished, or do you see any windows or holes open in the walls?-
-Did he get his powers back?- Sam asked.
-No…I don't think so; this was different. I mean, we have seen the shadow of his wings, but we have never seen his actual angelic self…-
-Because if we do, we will be dead- remembered Dean
-Or, minimum, our eyes burn out…- Sam complemented.
-Exactly! And yet here I am, well and alive…He drank those ashes, and his body started to glow red as you did – and Bobby pointed at Dean's hand, the one that was healed by the ashes -Next thing was the wings, that was a looker; it wasn't some dove wings there were like eagles, they filled this whole place…-
-Okay, we get it; he looked majestic, and then?- interrupted Dean
-You bet he did! And then nothing; he just turned around, sword in hand, and disappeared. For the first time, I understood all those paintings about warrior angels…They got it wrong. He doesn't look like those sissy paintings. That murderous look in his blue piercing eyes, the sword ready to strike... He could be on the cover of any book,- Bobby rambled, his excitement somewhat palpable.
-Okey, okey we get it! You'd marry him if he asked…-
Bobby scoffed – he doesn't have to ask…But for the look of it, he was juice enough, he could have finished off Eve by now. Meanwhile, here we are, fangirling over him.-
Dean rolled his eyes – You are the one making this all weird Bobby – Dean took the bag with the guns.
-If I understood correctly, we shouldn't use Abaddon's ashes at all. Who knows what they could potentially do to Eve- approached Sam.
-Yeah, she might sprout lizard wings and smith us all… in style…- Dean replied.
-You bet she will…and she doesn't have to ask either…- Bobby added.
-Here!- Dean sighed and passed around the prepared ammunition with the ashes -Load them… make them count-
In a few minutes, they arrived at Ervin's diner. It's the same diner they were in just this morning.
-You've got to be kidding me. She's been there the whole time?- protested Dean
-Why would she let us in?- reflected Sam -or out?-
-Well, she did not let Abaddon out so…- commented Bobby -Why only take her?-
-There is one way to find out- said Dean.
The diner stood alone in the deserted street, a stark contrast to the bustling fair that had filled the space just moments ago. The hunters stepped out of the car, and the only sound was the soft hum of their engine. The diner's lights were on a beacon of solitude in the silent night.
They each had their weapon at hand. Sam pulled the two bags they had prepared and placed them on top of the hood.
Dean scanned the area apprehensive. It was too quiet, even more so when a powerful angel was supposed to have struck the place first. His hand was unconsciously feeling the ashes vial in his pocket. An idea popped into his head. Sam joined Dean; they were ready to move out.
-What, we just stroll in? We don't know who is human or who's her!- Bobby stopped them.
-We drive her out…Me and Sam will go in…-
-Dean!- protested Bobby.
-Look! We don't get to shoot her off. You better…-
-That's the plan?-
-Yeah…pretty much- said Dean, and, taking his bag, strolled right in. Sam left the other bag to Bobby and followed Dean.
-Well, at least it ain't complicated- sighed Bobby.
Sam and Dean walked in. The place was packed—no sign of anything abnormal. Everybody seem to be having dinner.
-Right, now what?- asked Dean
They went to the only two spots open by the counter and sat there. Sam pulled his phone out and observed the place through the camera.
-Crap!- Sam exclaimed.
-Starships?- Dean asked.
-Yeap,-
-Is there anybody in this diner who is not a flesh-eating monster?-
-Hum…I think we are the only ones on the menu- said Sam nervously, putting his cell phone away. -We better get out…- he suggested.
But it was too late. Two plates were placed in front of them
-Two specials, right up- said the waitress.
Sam and Dean turned around slowly.
-Uh…no, that is not for us, we were just…- Sam apologized, but his voice died out. Dean's jaw fell.
-Abaddon!- they reacted. She smiled at them, but there was something wrong with that smile. It was harsh.
-Aby, Are you okay? What's going on? Where is Castiel?- asked Sam, worried.
She said nothing.
Not only did she look off, but she also looked different; she seemed taller and more muscular. She was dressed in a strange, mustard-colored uniform. Her hair had transformed into a vibrant, iridescent sunset, and her eyes glowed a brilliant red. She set down the plates and turned to leave when Dean impulsively grabbed her hand.
She looked at him with vacant eyes. Suddenly, a cleaver came crashing down. Sam and Dean jumped back in surprise. Castiel stood before them, his appearance disheveled. His clothes were stained with blood, and his face bore the marks of a brutal beating. A glint of sadness shone in his eyes as he warned, -Don't touch the staff-
Blood splattered across the counter and onto Sam and Dean. Dean, being closest, was drenched in it. Drops landed on his lip. He learned a lesson that day: Angel's blood tasted the sweetest, the strange taste lingering on his tongue. He stared at Abaddon, a golden glint in his eyes.
Abaddon moved her severed arm away, to Sam's horror, but her hand grew back immediately.
Everyone in the diner stood up at once, their eyes drawn to the source of the sudden, metallic scent. They waited, tense and expectant, like dogs poised to obey a command.
-Well, that was unnecessary, Castiel. Look all this mess you've created…- said a voice behind Castiel and Abaddon. A girl, also dressed in a waitress uniform, walked out. -Please don't mind him, Sam…Dean, the meal is on the house- the girl offered with a smile.
The boys stared at the girl. She was much smaller than Abaddon, with black hair and clear eyes.
-Eve…- said Dean.
-Pleasure…- she replied.
-What have you done to them?- demanded Sam
Eve scoffed- It's funny, never in my life have I seen this before…Angels asking for help from monsters…But you two are to be exceptions, I guess…- he smiled faded.
-And yet, this was all the best you could do…-Abaddon said, annoyed at Eve.
-He just needs a little bit of time to adjust- defended Eve
- He just chopped my hand off…He doesn't even know who he is anymore…Unless you free him, he won't…- Abaddon muttered.
-We have gone through this…- said Eve, exasperated, but suddenly stopped and took a deep breath -he will be subdued into obedience, and so will you; it is just a matter of time… -the two of them stared at each other in rage.
-What did you do to them, Eve?- repeated Sam, rather demanding.
- Ha! Are you wondering why your angels are so flaccid?- Smiled Eve.
-Not particularly, NO- defended Dean. Sam gave him a weary look.
-I am older than angels. I know what makes them tick: As long as I am around, consider them…unplugged…But…- she turned around at Abaddon - Imagine my surprise when one of you waltzed into my cozy dinner and answered my call. You are not totally disconnected, as I thought, because a part of you is in my territory now-
-Don't you dare talk about me to my friends…mom…- Abaddon warned, looking down on Eve. She was looking rather taller now. Actually, she was almost as tall as Sam at this point.
-Fine! -Eve backed up – This has been such a great day! Neither of you can ruin my mood. Eve proclaimed- I just got an extremely rare specimen…and a match to play…- she gestured at Castiel -Imagine when the two of you bared a child for me the possibilities- she laughed
-Whoa, whoa, whoa, hold on a second! Who's banging who?- Dean exclaimed, a look of disbelief on his face.
-What…are you planning to use them as guinea pigs for something…To what end?- asked Sam
-The strike of luck you two have to hang around with such an amazing creature! An angel that is also a monster. Imagine the possibilities… – declared Eve. Sam and Dean looked at Abaddon dumbfounded.
-I don't understand -Dean talked to Abaddon -Castiel said it was just an after-effect that it would disappear…-
But in truth, Abaddon little resembled now who she was this morning. Her hair, her eyes, and even her height seemed to change by the minute; she was now definitively taller than Sam, and her body was highjacked; she was changing by the second into something else.
-You…YOU DID SOMETHING- Dean shouted at Eve -Just look at her! She looks like you pump her with steroids…-
-ME? No, no, no, darling, you are jumping to conclusions. This was the natural end result. The Phoenix is taking over. Two regenerative powers battling with each other over a body, the angel, the Phoenix…who will win? Of course, it was a clever move to ask the creator of said monster to remove it from the angel- explained Eve, smiling- But my dearest, unfairly killed phoenix…What if I give you a second chance?- Eve walked to Abaddon and looked up at her.
-You... you came here to ask her for help?- Dean muttered, disbelief etched on his face. -Monsters are monsters!- he repeated, echoing their earlier conversation. His voice cracked as his body trembled with frustration. -How is this working out for you?- he ground out, his tone filled with judgment.
-You haven't asked for her reason- was all the answer Abaddon gave back. Sam and Dean froze. Even Eve felt a strange sensation. Her eyes shifted, softening. She took a step back, her gaze meeting Castiel's.
-But I'll give you this, Dean…- Abaddon continued – I wouldn't be boasting about bootleg work- Abaddon turned at Eve, and her character reverted back.
-Don't you dare talk to your mother like that creature! You are MINE now- hissed Eve.
-All right! Catfight is over – intervened Dean -Why don't we all step outside and chat…-
-Why? This is private…- Eve seemed to call down and smiled.
Suddenly, one of the patrons stood up and closed the blinds and the door, and others went to the windows and closed the blinds. Outside, Bobby prepared his guns. That was never a good sign. Dean's bag was confiscated. The guns were taken out. Eve inspected them; she felt a nauseated smell coming out of them and put them back.
-Phoenix ashes! I can safely conclude that they are somehow related to the angel's infection. I bet you'd had to go a long way for that-
-You have no idea…Which makes me wonder why haven't you gotten rid of teenanger angel here- said Dean
-I know…my only weakness mixed with the power of an Angel. What could go wrong? But, like all monsters, she will soon stop struggling against me– she smiled at Abaddon.
-Get rid of these…Thank you!- said Eve to the guy standing by. He immediately took the bag and went to the kitchen. The Winchester couldn't avoid a look of frustration when their only defense that took so much to get was taken away.
-Relax! I am not here to fight- said amicable Eve.
-No… just to rally every freak on the planet, bringing even bigger mess-up monsters…half-ass Spidermen and Dragons? Really…sister…Dragons?-
-So I dazzle up some old classics. I needed help-
-With what?- bickered Sam – tear apart the planet?-
Eve confronted Sam-you misunderstand me…I never wanted that…Not at first. I like things like they were. I liked the arrangement-
-What arrangement?-
-The natural order…My children turn against a few of you…You hunted a few of them. I was happy-
-Okay, so what changed?- asked Dean
-My children, no thanks to you, started to get kidnapped and tortured, even my firstborns-
-So they invoke their goddess, and you answer…you are here to save them- recapitulated Abaddon.
-Yes, I was pushed into this. After all, a mother defends her children-
-Really? You use the mother-of-the-year defense?- counter Dean
-It happens to be true…but you know what, maybe you'll believe it if I look a little more like this – said Eve, and she transformed into someone else. Dean and Sam were now looking at their mother…in a waitress outfit.
-Oh! You bitch!- snapped Dean.
-She died to protect you, didn't she? -
-But she didn't leave a path of blood and destruction in doing so- pointed Abaddon -
-SHE WOULD HAVE…Sacrifices had to be made… Now you understand a mother's love. I am not different…- Eve protested.
-All right, you know what? This conversation is over. If you are gonna kill us…Kill us…-
-You!- Eve rolled her eyes -Why would I bother with such small fries? After all, I was happy with our arrangement…Is Crowly I wanted…- At the sole mention of that name, Abaddon turned around at Castiel and looked down at him; she could only see the top of his head now. He was standing by her side. He didn't move.
-Well, you're too late there. That little imp croaked months ago- informed Dean. Eve did not react to this statement.
-Crowley is alive.- Eve smiled, informing him back.
-That's impossible!- declared Sam
-I see his face through the eyes of every child he strings up and skins. Any idea why he is hurting my babies?- She passed around Sam and Dean.
-He wants purgatory, right? Location, location, location- answered Dean. Eve laughed.
-Is that what he told you?- Dean and Sam stared at Eve, and so did Abaddon. Castiel was quietly following Eve's every move. -It's about the souls- Eve continued.
-What about them?- follow up Sam.
-They are power, you simple little monkey…Fuel, each soul a beautiful nuclear reactor…Put together, you have something similar to the sun…- Abaddon looked at Castiel.
-Now, think what the king of hell could do with that vast untapped oil well…a powerful hippy. Now Crowley wants to siphon out my supply and torture my children to do it? Okay fine! I'll quit playing nice…I'll turn you all, every soul…mine. Even angels -She looked at Abaddon and Castiel- Let's see how hot hell will burn when everyone comes to me…he asked for it-
-You know, last time I checked, there were a few billions of us…that plan might take a while- reflected Dean
-What exactly do you think I'm doing here?- she said with a hint of annoyance and opened her arms at the diner -I am building the perfect beast-
-Wait a second, all those…all those things we've been finding…- Sam connected the idea.
-Call them beta testing…-
-Well, think your formula might be a little off. They are exploding all over town- mocked Dean
-Well, there were a few unfortunate failures…but I eventually I got it right! Quiet, smart, inconspicuous; it could spread to a whole town in under a day…Oh! And the best part? You have been with it the whole time…-
-We have been with it?- repeated Sam
-What?- was all Dean could say.
-Yeah! You were the final test. I had to see if it could slip under hunters undetected, of course…- Sam and Dean were going furiously through their memories. Who could have slipped through their defenses?
-Little Ryan- finally came the answer. Eve replied, a warm smile on her face. Sam and Dean exchanged a worried glance. They had left the boy with his uncle a poor man with no defenses against monsters. Castiel grunted. Dean shot him a look.
-You appear upset. If it makes you feel any better, Ryan was bound to work on you- came Eve victoriously -little wayward orphan…Like yourselves- she pinched Sam's check.
-Oh! So you set the hunters with cheap sweets…Now, your new creature is roaming free and transforming towns by the second?- asked Abaddon
-Correct! But…he is not cheap, and neither are you…My next achievements- Eve said triumphantly at Abaddon and Castiel and then turned back to the boys- There is nothing you can do about it now. So let's talk-
-So, this is her reason?- Sam's voice was the lowest he could muster. He looked up at Abaddon. She said nothing and redirected at Eve. – We have nothing further to say-
-Well, that's where you're wrong…I have an offer to propose. Crowley, as you know, is not so easy to find, so here's the deal: You find him, bring him to me. I'll let you live!-
-That's your proposal? You let us live? What about our friends here…What about the rest of the world?-
-Now, now, you are being greedy-
-Then the answer is no…- refuted Dean
-Dean!- called Sam
-Sam…No- he reaffirmed.
-Like you have another option…- mocked Eve
-Maybe I do, maybe I don't-
-Think again…Do you seriously believe you have a backup plan?-
The door opens, and Bobby comes pushed in by another tug.
-Well, so much for your plan B- Eve walked to Bobby -Another blood sack… your angel had a better chance..- she turned around back to the boys -Work for me- she said playfully -it's a good deal -The boys said nothing, Eve sighed annoyed -Bonus: I don't kill you friend but that's as long as I am willing to go…-
-All right, look. For the last month, we have been working for an evil dick…we are not about to sign up for an evil bitch…We don't work with demons…WE DON'T WORK WITH MONSTER, and if that means you got to kill, then KILL US!- Dean was taking his game stakes high. Bobby looked around and found Abaddon looking back at him.
-Or I turn you- offered Eve -and you do what I want anyway…Just like my new angels here. They are a little bit more tricky to subdue but doable. My new daughter refused to kill you at first when you all were sitting there just this morning, but by now, I am pretty sure she has changed her mind- Eve smiled at her.
-Beat me or do whatever…- Dean began, but he was cut off. Eve pounced, pinning him to the bar. Sam tried to intervene, but he was easily overpowered by one of Eve's henchmen. Bobby waited impatiently for an opening. His eyes felt on Castiel. It was difficult to see, but he was surrendered by a heat haze. He quickly turned to Abaddon. It was the same as Castiel.
-Don't test me- was all Eve said to Dean's ear.
-Bite me…-Dean taunted her. He didn't need to say it twice. Eve proceeded to bite him in the neck like a vampire.
She had barely buried her fangs in his neck when she let go of him; she was in pain.
-Phoenix ashes!- gloated Dean- Didn't your parents teach you not to eat things you find on the street? You never know where it has been…-
-HOW?- screamed Eve
-Well, everybody was doing it, so I got curious…– Dean held the wound Eve made in his neck with a smile while gesturing to drink with the other.
Eve's chest glowed. She was burning from the inside. Her mouth and eyes expelled a black liquid, thick like blood. She was looking at Dean in despair.
Eve finally fell to the floor dead. All the monsters in the dinner lost it. They went in a rage and attacked.
-Shut your eyes!- Shouted Castiel as he stepped into the middle of the dinner and liberated a powerful beam of light. The whole diner was engulfed in a blinding white light.
When Dean, Sam, and Boby were able to see again, they found themselves among piles of dead bodies.
-We got to take you in more monster hunts- commented Bobby as he passed by Castiel.
Castiel was standing next to Eve's body. She was dead, for sure. He looked troubled.
Castiel was restored. All his wounds were healed, and the blood was cleansed from his clothes. He was himself again. No wings tho.
-Hey Cas uhm…Dean's hurt pretty good…- Sam called him.
-I think she turned me into a Jefferson starship- Dean joked. He was starting to look in pain and clamy -Can you clear that up too?- he asked; Castiel said nothing. He walked to Dean, put his hand on his wound and healed him. He then walked behind the bar where Abaddon was still standing, tall as a tree, engulfed in flames. Castiel was now looking fine, but for some reason, Abaddon hadn't changed back like he did.
-How are you feeling?- he asked, his voice raspy and deep.
She looked around. The others came around.
-It make take a while…- her voice came out deep and distorted. -I'll be all right…It would be best if you all go now…- she turned her head sideways like a bird. Her eyes were black with the pupils in flames.
Castiel looked conflicted.
She turned at the group, looked up, and closed her eyes. She took a really deep breath and calmly said -Is all right…You have other pressing matters to attend…-
-Pressing matter? More than these monsters? Where are we going?- asked Bobby
Dean sighed -The kid…the little kid, he is one of them-
-You say they were clean-
-Yeah, well…Mom here was playing with something new, so…-
-Nothing we tried checked out wrong, Bobby- further explained Sam
-Balls!- was all Bobby could say.
-Go!- said Abaddon softly to Castiel.
-Wait! Why can't you go with us?- Dean asked.
Abaddon moved her hand over the counter; she had not even touched it when it burst into flames. Her hand passed through it like soft playdough. -It is taking all of me right now to keep it contained…I am no good to you like this…You better go…I'll be fine- she turned around at Castiel and smiled.
Castiel took a deep breath and shook his head. He then went to the others. -I'll be right back…- he assured to Abaddon. They all disappeared. Abaddon stood there alone, surrounded by all those corpses. She sighed and closed her eyes.
The morning was about when the group reappeared in the uncle's house. They were standing in the living room. The first thing they see is the body of the uncle lying dead on the floor.
-So, we kill the wicked witch, and she still wins…She could have turned half the town by now- Dean grumbled.
Bobby separated from the group to look around. He walked around the kitchen and then observed the closed door to the basement. He went to it and opened it. On the stairs lay the bodies of the two kids.
-Found them!- call Bobby. Everybody rushed to him.
-Who got them?- asked Dean, appalled.
Sam saw something on the door frame and crutched down to inspect it. He found fine dust piled on it. He passed his finger and rubbed it. -Demons!- he concluded. They all looked at each other.
-So, what do you think?- asked Sam to Dean
-I think… hmm…That demons don't give a crap about monster twins unless they are told to…-
-So, do you think she was telling the truth?- continued Sam. Dean conceded.
-The truth about what?- asked Bobby. Sam and Dean looked at each other. Castiel was fixed at the kids.
-She said that Crowley was taking her children…- Dean explained. Bobby looked at Castiel.
-I burned his bones…- was his sole response.
-According to her, Crowley stole her kids and tortured them….somewhere- further explained Dean to Bobby.
-I don't understand…- murmured Castiel.
-Oh! He is a crafty son of a gun…-
-I am an angel….I'll look into it immediately- and Castiel disappeared.
-CAS!- called Dean -Let us know what you find out!-
Sam hinted to Bobby, and they both went back to the living room. Dean saw them go; something was wrong, so he followed them.
-What?- he asked them both. Nobody said anything -What?- he repeated impatience.
Bobby turned up to him -How did Crowley getaway?- Dean looked at him, not understanding. -I mean, is it not like Cas makes mistakes like that? Unless…-
-Unless what?-
Bobby took a moment to gather his thoughts -Unless he meant to…- finally came what it was in his and Sam's mind.
-I mean, this is Cas we are talking about-defended Dean -Do you believe this?- he asked Sam. He could only look at his shoes. -Sam?- pressed Dean.
-Look…this might be probably nothing…Is just…- Sam could not continue. He looked at Bobby for reassurance. It was hard to admit that an angel might be lying, but even more so, a friend -You know, you are right…It's probably nothing- said Sam defeated. They all stood there for an awkward minute.
The jukebox put a vinyl, and the music started to play. Castiel was back at the dinner, standing next to the body of the mother of all. He looked around, but no Abaddon was in sight.
-Really, Cas, this is getting ridiculously- came a voice. Crowley was standing in front of him -How many times do I have to clean up your messes?-
-Not for long now since you are so willing to be found out by the Winchesters…-
-What?-
-Thanks to a sloppy work killing those monster boys. They now know you are alive, for sure, and they are doubting me. You just blew our cover.-
Crowley scoffed – Would you prefer to let those little creatures rampant? They will have half the country changed to a new religion by now-
-I would have appreciated your intervention a little bit more if it wasn't for your demons leaving their marks all over the crime scene…Now, where is Abaddon?-
-Abaddon?- Crowley looked around -I am sorry. I'm afraid I haven't had the pleasure.-
-There was an angel right there!- Castiel pointed impatiently at the melted counter.
-It was like this when I arrived…- Crowley put his hands in his pockets.
