Hello everyone. I have some quick announcements before we begin. This story is going to be a retelling of the original fanfic "Children of the Triforce" by Alexandra Spears. I actually read this story many, many years ago, back before I was even really familiar with fanfiction in general. I remember really enjoying it, so recently, I decided to look it up again and give it another read. Naturally, I enjoyed reading it all over again.
However…while I really liked the premise and characters and direction that the story went in, I felt like it could have been better. Specifically, I felt like it could have been more fleshed out. More detailed, with better pacing. So, being the ambitious writer that I am, I decided to take the original story and breathe some new life into it. And now here we are. This is Children of the Triforce: Retold.
Alexandra, if you ever end up reading this, I want you to know that I am handling this story with the utmost love and respect for your original work. Thank you for sharing your stories with the world, and I hope that I can continue to write with your blessing.
Children of the Triforce: Retold
Chapter 1 – The Triforce Reunited
This was it, the final battle against the Demon King, Ganon. Link, an 18-year-old hero, and his wife, Princess Zelda, had gathered what they needed to defeat the boar-like monster once and for all. A magical sword, some silver arrows, and two powerful pieces of the Triforce.
Truth be told, Link had actually defeated the Demon King once before, back when he and Zelda were no more than children. However, in the years since then, Ganon's minions had worked tirelessly to steal some of Link's blood and use it to resurrect their master. They had eventually succeeded, and now Ganon was a threat to all of Hyrule once again.
But not for long. Link and Zelda charged into his lair, facing the hordes of monsters that Ganon had summoned to his side. Fortunately, the duo was experienced at dealing with this sort of thing, and made quick work of their enemies. Zelda cleared out many of them with her magic while Link took on the tougher opponents with his sword.
Eventually, Link managed to clear a path to Ganon himself. The tyrant roared in frustration as he lifted his deadly trident overhead, trying to spear the hero on its prongs. Link just remained calm as he used his shield and sword to block the attacks. His patience was soon rewarded as Ganon left himself wide open, and Link used the opportunity to slash the beast's side with his magical sword.
The attack's results were immediate, as Ganon howled in pain before becoming paralyzed. The magical power within the blade had been too much for him to withstand.
With a grin, Link backed away from his foe. His part of the battle was done. "Zelda!" he called loudly.
The Princess was on the other side of the room, but she heard her husband's voice and nodded in understanding. She soon drew her bow and took careful aim with a specially crafted silver arrow, the only thing that would finish Ganon off for good.
However, as Zelda began to take aim, the enemies that she had left alone were now congregating to her side, threatening to overtake her and prevent the arrow from being loosed. Clenching her teeth, she called back to the hero. "Hold them off, Link!"
"You got it, Zelda!" Link exclaimed before charging towards his wife's location. Using his sword, he cut his way to Zelda's side before the enemies could reach her, and he kept them all at bay.
Sensing that she was safe, Zelda focused once more, taking aim at the paralyzed beast. She knew that Ganon wouldn't stay frozen in place like that forever. She had to release her arrow now, or all was lost.
Offering a quick prayer to the Goddesses above, Zelda let the silver arrow fly. It sailed straight towards Ganon, and struck him in the middle of his massive chest. It was a direct hit.
The Demon King reared his ugly head and let out a final, ear-piercing roar. His body soon erupted into bright flames, causing everyone in the room to pause and shield their eyes. Within seconds, Ganon's massive figure burned away, until nothing remained but a large pile of blood-red ash on the floor.
Suddenly, all of the enemies in the room disintegrated, their lives only having been sustained by Ganon's dark sorcery. Link and Zelda cautiously glanced around, making sure that there was no one left to oppose them, but their fears were unnecessary. Ganon had been defeated, and now the two of them were completely alone.
"We did it," Link said, smiling towards his wife.
Zelda nodded. "Yes, we've made sure that Ganon has been stopped once again. Now there is only one thing left to do."
Link nodded back, and the two of them soon approached the pile of ash that was Ganon's remains. They looked at each other for a moment, before Zelda took a deep breath and raised one of her hands over the ash. She let it hover there for a second, before a bright light shone from beneath the ash.
Suddenly, a golden, glowing triangle arose out of the ashes, floating in front of the duo. Link and Zelda just gazed upon it with eyes full of admiration.
"The Triforce of Power," Zelda whispered. "We have it safely in our grasp once more."
"Which means that the Triforce has been reunited," Link said with a nod. He currently had the Triforce of Courage, and his wife held the Triforce of Wisdom. Now that they had the stolen Triforce of Power within their grasp, the sacred relic would be whole once more.
Zelda gave her husband a loving smile. "You and I will make sure that it is never separated again."
"Right," Link agreed. They both knew that the Kingdom would be safer if the Triforce remained in one piece. They had found that letting others gain control over it had often led to corruption, as had been Ganon's case. Only those with pure hears and strong minds could truly control the great power that rested within it. Because of this, Link and Zelda planned to store the Triforce away somewhere safe, where no one would be able to easily get their hands on it.
Zelda soon reached out to touch the Triforce of Power, but as she made contact with it, she immediately frowned and retracted her hand. "Oh," she mumbled.
"What is it?" Link asked, stepping closer to her side.
"This Triforce piece," Zelda said, slowly raising her hand towards it once again. "It still contains some of Ganon's corruption within it. I can sense his presence coming from inside."
Link frowned. Well this certainly didn't sound good. "But how is that possible? Ganon is dead, isn't he?"
"Yes," Zelda said with a subtle nod. "However, his presence remains all the same. Perhaps he tampered with it with his dark sorcery. Or maybe it's because he held such a strong connection to it. He was always obsessed with this piece, after all."
Link's expression turned grave. "So what does this mean? Can we not complete the Triforce?"
Zelda shook her head. "No, it should be fine. The Triforce is a relic of purity. It can't be tainted forever. Ganon's corruption should eventually fade away from it, although it might take many years."
Link scowled. "All the more reason to store it away."
"Agreed. Let's get it back to the castle."
"Are you able to carry it?" Link asked, sounding concerned.
Zelda gave a confident nod. "A person with a weaker will might be corrupted by it, but I am strong of heart and mind. I won't let his darkness have any hold over me."
Link flashed his wife a proud grin. He knew that she was more than capable of handling this. "Go ahead then."
Feeling determined, Zelda reached forward and touched the Triforce of Power once more. The floating triangle shone brightly for a moment before vanishing from sight. Once it was gone, the back of Zelda's hand began to glow, just as it always did. However, this time there were two glowing triangles, as opposed to one.
"I've got it," Zelda said with a smile. "Hyrule is safe once more."
Link smiled back. "I'd say that I deserve a kiss for that." The couple had been married for a few months now, but Link still liked to take every opportunity he could to ask for a kiss from his beloved.
Zelda smirked a bit before leaning over and giving him a slight peck on the cheek. Link looked like he was about to protest and demand something more, but Zelda was quick to giggle and cut him off. "That should tide you over for now. I'll give you something more substantial once we get home. Something you truly deserve."
Link's face grew hot as he caught her seductive tone. He didn't need to be told twice to know what she was referring to. "O-Okay," he mumbled, looking starry-eyed.
Zelda just giggled some more before grabbing his hand and pulling him away. "Let's go, my hero."
Link and Zelda returned to the castle, where they gladly announced that Ganon had been defeated once more. The people rejoiced, happy to know that the land of Hyrule was safe from the tyrant, and that they could always rely on their hero and Princess. Zelda's father, King Harkinian, was especially pleased, and he announced that there would be a huge celebration held in the castle later that evening. Everyone in Castle Town was invited to attend, and the Kingdom was soon abuzz with excitement.
However, before the party took place, Link and Zelda had some final business to take care of. They needed to find a location where the completed Triforce could be safely stored, away from any thieves or evildoers. Fortunately, they already had a spot in mind. They soon made their way to a large vault which rested at the top of one the castle's tallest towers.
The couple stepped inside the sealed room, which was empty save for a lone pedestal resting in the middle of it. Link and Zelda gave each other a nod before extending their hands over the pedestal. In an instant, Zelda's two pieces of the Triforce appeared floating side by side. A moment later, Link's Triforce of Courage appeared as well, floating over to join the others. Within seconds, the three triangles naturally arranged themselves into a perfect pyramid, where they then continued to float as one unified piece.
"It's rather beautiful, isn't it?" Zelda asked, her eyes glistening at the glowing relic. Its brightness alone had managed to light up the entire room in a shade of gold.
"Yes," Link agreed. "And it's up to us to make sure that it never falls into the wrong hands again."
"There should be no need to worry," Zelda assured him. "The only ones who know of this location will be the Royal Family: you, me, and my father. As long as we keep it a secret, there should be nothing to worry about."
Link nodded. It felt nice to hear his wife's assuring tone. Still, as he stared at the golden relic, he couldn't help but feel a bit sad. He had saved this thing numerous times over, and now it almost felt weird to know that it would likely never be in danger again.
"It looks like I won't be needed anymore," Link admitted with a sigh.
Zelda gave her husband a curious look before realizing what he meant. "I wouldn't be so sure about that. You never know when someone will appear to try and steal it away again. And when that time comes, I'm counting on you to be our first line of defense."
Link smiled, letting his wife's words cheer him up. "Of course, Princess."
Zelda soon stepped closer to Link and placed her head against his shoulder. "Besides, I'll always need my lover," she whispered sweetly.
Link just smiled even more as he wrapped his arm around his wife, pulling her close. Nobody knew how to brighten his mood like she did. "Well, I'll always be here for that," he assured her.
Zelda giggled a bit before her gaze returned to the glowing Triforce. It was crazy to think of how many generations had passed with the Triforce being divided and split up. The relic may have been an object of purity, but it held a dangerous and bloody history. Fortunately, all of that was about to change. Now the Triforce would be safe and secure, and Link and Zelda would do everything in their power to make sure that it stayed that way.
"I wish my ancestors could have seen this," she whispered as she continued to watch the relic's marvelous glow.
Link laughed a bit. "Do you want me to call your aunt over?"
Zelda smiled a bit as well. She knew that he was referring to Zelda I, a woman that was a Princess of Hyrule's past. She had been cursed by a sleeping spell for many generations before Link had finally succeeded in waking her up with the power of the Triforce. "Well, she is technically an ancestor of mine, but I meant the ones that have been struggling to recover the Triforce for all these years."
Link nodded. He knew what she really meant. The figures that had been spoken of in legend. The ones that had fought against Ganon time and time again in order to stop him from misusing the Triforce's power. Specifically, the Hero of Time, and the Hero of Light and Dark, as well as their wives, both named Princess Zelda.
"It's hard to believe that Ganon has been around long enough to deal with three Links and three Zeldas," the Princess mused.
Link chuckled. "Hopefully it's been as annoying for him as it has been for us," he noted with a grin.
Zelda giggled as well. She always enjoyed how funny Link could be at times. It was one of the reasons why she had always found him so charming.
"Come on," Zelda said, suddenly grabbing Link's hand and pulling him along. "Let's finish up here."
Link seemed a bit surprised at her suddenness but followed along behind her. They soon stepped out of the vault, and Link shut the giant metal door, completely blocking out the golden glow of the shining Triforce within. Zelda then withdrew a key from her dress and used it to lock the vault. At last, the Triforce was secure.
Zelda smiled a bit as she pocketed her key once more. Much like the Triforce, she planned to hide the key in a safe location as well, but there would be time for that later. For now, she was content to grab Link's hand again, and begin leading him down the long winding staircase.
"Come on," she urged him in a playful tone.
Once again, Link just gave her a perplexed look. "Zelda, what's the rush? Your father's party won't start for another few hours at least."
"I know," Zelda replied with a smirk. "But if I recall correctly, I believe that I told you that I would give you something more substantial than a kiss when we got home."
It didn't take long for Link's face to steam up again, and he soon began grinning like an idiot.
"Oh yeah?"
Zelda giggled as she pulled on his hand some more. "Come on, my hero. I'll race you to the bedroom."
Link just giddily jumped in place, chasing right behind her. "I'm with you, my Princess."
From what I can tell, the original "Children of the Triforce" took place sometime after the original Legend of Zelda for the NES, with some elements of the TV series mixed into it. Unfortunately (or perhaps, fortunately), I have never seen the Zelda TV series, so I mostly intend to stick to the game canon here. Expect a lot of references to Zelda 1 and 2.
I've actually already written this story to completion, and it is 25 chapters in total. I plan to update this story once every two weeks, so please, feel free to come along with me on this journey. As always, comments are appreciated, and thanks for reading!
