At the Kawatche Caves…
Clark looked down at the octagonal key.
Countless nights Clark had gazed up at the stars wondering why he was so different. When his parents shared his unnatural heritage, Clark then wondered where he could have come from. That question was answered last year when he got in contact with Dr. Virgil Swann. Clark was the sole survivor from the planet of Krypton; nothing more than a void left where an entire planet should have been. How or why it was gone was still a mystery. Clark then questioned why it was only him who survived. A message from his biological father answered that.
On this third planet from the star Sol, you will be a god among men. They are a flawed race; rule them with strength, my son, that is where your greatness lies.
That answer was terrifying. Clark had no interest in conquering or ruling Earth. He had nothing but love and respect for the human race. If anything, Clark wanted to use his abilities to help others.
"Why did you have to bring him into this Jor-El?" Clark asked aloud. He lifted the key in front of the imprint on the cave wall, surrounded by foreign symbols. The indent of an octagon was visible. When Clark first found the cave, the wall had a carved out engraving; a perfect fit for the key. The hole had since been closed over, but if there was any place for the key to go, this was it.
No response came, but it didn't matter; Clark already knew the answer. It wasn't Jor-El's fault for what happened to his father. It was Clark's; his and his alone.
Clark had fought back when Jor-El tried to force him to leave last year. A decision which caused an explosion and killed his unborn brother. And then, Clark ran away causing his father, his real father, Johnathan Kent, to make a deal with the disembodied voice to bring him back. Now, one of the people Clark loved and respected most in the world was suffering because of a choice he had made.
It had to stop.
"Whatever promises my dad made I'll take them on." Clark's voice echoed in the cavern. "Come on! Come on, Jor-El. I'm the one you want."
Clark held the key out in front of him, willing for something, anything to happen. There came a slight hum, and the key began to float by itself. Three beams of light emerged from the key causing the symbols around the hole to morph. The beams united to one solid stream of light.
"Clark?" Alicia's voice called out. Clark grabbed the disc and shoved it back into his pocket as she came into view. Once he touched the disc, the light and noise stopped. "What was that noise?"
"What are you doing here?" Clark didn't try to hide his annoyance.
"Don't be mad," Alicia pleaded as she looked down. "Your mom told me where you were. I just wanted to see you. I almost died again yesterday and Van's still out there and, and I feel so safe when I'm with you and, and…"
Clark's heart melted as he watched Alicia's eyes well up with tears. He rushed over and pulled her close into an embrace. Immediately Alicia snuggled into the nook of his shoulder. "Hey, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to snap."
"It's okay." Alicia looked up to smile at him. "Now you owe me a kiss."
Clark grinned and obliged in giving her a quick peck. Alicia giggled; her smile restored. She backed away and admired the painting of the ten men stacked in a pyramid.
"Cool. Do these mean anything?"
Naman would have the strength of ten men, Clark remembered Kyla explaining to him.
But Clark couldn't tell his girlfriend any of the legend. Alicia was smart; she would put together that the symbols all pointed to him.
"Yes. Come on," Clark said quickly, hoping to distract her. "Let's get some coffee before school. I think it's about time I buy you one." Clark put his arm around Alicia's shoulders and began to lead her towards the exit.
"Well, what do they mean?"
Clark inwardly groaned. He tried to consciously keep his voice calm. "I told you: I'm not ready to talk about this."
"Tomorrow?"
"Alicia!"
"Who's down here?" The two teenagers stopped walking as a Lionel Luthor came from around the corner. "Oh, Clark. And who might this charming young lady be?"
Alicia seemed startled by Lionel's appearance. She jumped away from Clark creating the most space that had been between them.
"This is Alicia Baker. My girlfriend."
"Girlfriend." Lionel's eyes shifted between the two of them. "Well, aren't you a lucky lad. Please, don't let me interrupt you."
"We were just leaving." Clark put his arm back around Alicia and resumed escorting her out of the cave. He glanced over his shoulder and saw Lionel rush forward to the keyhole. Something had changed on the wall to catch is interest.
"Get us out of here," Clark whispered to Alicia. They evaporated into green mist as Lionel called out Clark's name.
