Hi, everyone! Welcome to Book II of the Mizuki series. I hope you all enjoy this story as much as I did while writing it. Please feel free to review, I would love to hear your thoughts.
Disclaimer: I don't own My Hero Academia or any of its characters. Mizuki, however, is my own creation.
Let's start with the story, shall we?*
Chapter 13
The Next Day…
The atmosphere was depressing in the classroom of 1-A, much more than anyone expected it to be when they stepped inside. Those who failed the practical exam sat in their despair, dark clouds hanging over their heads.
Sato and Kaminari stood hunched over in sadness, a piece of their soul hanging out of their mouths. They were the only pair that failed the exam and now they were going to be the only two who was not going to the training camp.
Kirishima sweat dropped at the darkness that lay heavy over them and let out a breath. Crimson eyes found the empty seat of Mizuki and a sad smile came onto his face. Today was her resting day after the events of the previous day.
He wondered how she was doing. He sent her a few texts but received no reply. She hadn't read any of them either. He assumed that she was mentally resting and preparing herself to tell her parents about the new development.
Katsuki sat by his desk, not saying anything and only glaring down at his desk. There was a distinct dangerous aura seeping out of his body. Could it be that Mizuki scraped up the courage to tell him about the secret?
"Everyone… I'm looking forward… to hearing your stories… about training camp…" Kaminari muttered underneath his breath, tears threatening to form in the corner of his eyes. Izuku gave the duo a sympathetic smile.
"W-We don't know for sure yet! There might be a last-minute twist!" He tried to cheer them up, hoping that it would lift their spirits. It was possible to have a change of plans, especially with Aizawa being their homeroom teacher and past events.
"Stop, Midoriya. If you say it aloud, it'll probably jinx it," Sero spoke and put a hand on the green haired male's shoulder. Izuku glanced back at the dark-haired male who frowned and then returned his attention towards Kaminari.
"If we failed the exams, then we'd have to ship training camp and be in summer school hell. And since we didn't pass the practical exam… If you guys don't get it, then you're dumber than monkeys!" Kaminari mercilessly jammed his fingers into Izuku's eyes and he let out a cry in pain.
"Deku-kun!" Ochaco exclaimed and worriedly stood by the male as he held his poked eyes. She panicked, not knowing what to do and Iida also had his arms robotically waving in the air in worry of the assault.
"Calm down. I don't know either. Our team passed thanks to Mineta, but I was just sleeping the whole time. Anyway, since we don't know how they're scoring it we can't just make assumptions," Sero pointed out, Mineta making a face filled with smugness.
"If you feel bad for us, then I dunno, just bring me back lots of stuff!"
Eijiro wondered if he should tell them that they would still be able to go even if they failed the practical exam. He didn't know of their results for the written exam though but the summer hell that Aizawa talked about was the supplementary classes. He also didn't know if he should tell them that he too failed.
"It'll be alright, Kaminari. I'll bring back lots of stuff for you, okay?" Mina told the male, patting him soothingly on his back. He looked at her with tears brimming in his hopeful eyes. She was too bright for him to stare at!
"Well, I think Midoriya is right. There might just be something that happens for you to go," Eijiro told the male and grinned. He wasn't planning to tell them but he could at least make the males feel a bit better.
"Kirishima…"
"Ah, Kirishima-kun, that reminds me! Where is Mizuki-kun? Isn't she coming to school today?" Iida asked the male, Ochaco holding Izuku's shoulders as he rubbed his tearing eyes. Iida would ask Katsuki but no one wanted to even come close to the male.
Eijiro blinked and then rubbed the back of his head. He didn't know how to answer the question without saying anything unnecessary. Mizuki wanted to keep things a secret as far as possible and he wanted to support her in that decision.
"About that…"
"Once the bell rings, get in your seats," Aizawa's voice sternly stated as he slid the door open in one smooth motion. Everyone was quick to take their seats, fearing the wrath of their homeroom teacher.
Izuku rubbed his eyes, his vision slowly returning as he blinked away his tears. He glanced at the empty chair of Mizuki and felt the unease inside him as well as the agitation of the ash blonde who sat in front of him.
Was she staying at home because of what happened the previous day? He could understand the reason behind it and it seemed that Eijiro knew about it as well. Why else would he become uncomfortable about the subject?
Mi-chan… I hope that you're alright… Izuku thought, his face falling. He tried to text and call her but it only led to no reply. He was worried about her. She always overcame anything in her way, yet what happened between her and Katsuki was a first. He didn't know if she was going to be alright and he wanted to be there for her.
Shoto stared at the back of Izuku and his brows knitted together. Izuku vaguely explained what happened, the information angering him to no ends. He didn't know what was said. All he knew was that it was enough to push her to tears and now she wasn't at school? That wasn't like her.
He glanced at Eijiro who sat silently in his seat. He seemed to know about the whole situation and even knew that she wouldn't be at school. Mizuki confided in him but not Shoto. It was quite a bitter pill to swallow. He wanted to support her and soothe her just like she had done for him.
"Morning. Unfortunately, there are those who didn't pass the final exams," Aizawa spoke as he regained everyone's attention, the mention falling deeper into depression. "Accordingly, for the training camp in the woods…everyone's going!" He said with a big grin plastered on his worn-out face.
A last minute twist!
"We can go?! Really?!" Kaminari asked in disbelief, Sato also dumbstruck. Mina gave him a grin and a thumbs up while Eijiro let out a breath. He knew it. There was made provision for everyone besides him and Mizuki.
"Yes. Some failed, but no one failed the written exam." That was another relieving fact that made everyone feel at ease. It was lucky for everyone to pass and to be able to go to the training camp. It was almost too good to be true.
"In the practical, Kaminari, Sato, Sero, Kirishima and Mizuki failed," Aizawa said and the temperature in the class instantly fell at the news. It was more shocking than the fact that those who failed were also going to the training camp.
"Mizuki-chan…"
"…failed?"
Mizuki. The Mizuki failed the practical exam? How was that even possible?! No one knew what was going on, Kaminari's eyes shooting towards Eijiro who wore a half guilty expression. He knew he failed?!
"H-Hey! W-Wait a minute! I'm completely confused! You two failed? How the hell did that happen?!" Kaminari asked the redhead, everyone's eyes on Eijiro. The pressure in the air rose and he paled slightly.
Mi-chan failed? Izuku thought in horror, his thoughts spiralling. But he congratulated her with the others and everything! They made it in time for the buzzer and Eijiro ran out with her, both reaching the escape gate!
Shoto was also shocked, his eyes wide at the news. Mizuki… That was why she acted so strange when she returned after her match. Both she and Eijiro didn't pass? He frowned deeply, his concern for her absence growing.
Katsuki's body was cold and he could feel everything spin around him at the news. That wasn't possible. It was impossible for Mizuki to fail! They announced that their team passed! That was absurd!
You're shitting me! Mizuki didn't make it? Like hell! She would've told me if she- Katsuki recalled the face she made. That was the reason she looked terrible. She failed the practical and already had enough on her plate before he… Shit.
"Quiet down." Aizawa's eyes flashed red and the classroom was filled with silence again. "For this time's exam, we on the villain side made sure to leave a way for the students to win while watching to see how you all would take on the task at hand. If we hadn't, most of you would've gotten stuck before you started." he continued nonchalantly.
"So, when you said you were really out to crush us…"
"That was to make you feel cornered. In the first place, the training camp I the woods is one to increase strength. Those who failed need it the most. They have to get stronger." He grinned from ear to ear.
"It was rational falsehood," Aizawa finished and had Sato, Kaminari and Sero all cheer in happiness while Iida had his fist clenched. His body trembled in frustration as he let himself fall for the schemes of his homeroom teacher.
"I was tricked again! As expected of U.A." He then shot up in his chair, hand reaching to the sky. "However, since you lied to us twice, our faith in you will waver!" Iida exclaimed and Ochaco seat dropped at the male as he acted like a wet blanket.
"That's true. I'll consider that. But I wasn't lying about everything." His face became serious and eyes became intense. "Failure is failure. We have prepared a separate time for extra lessons for you all. Frankly, it'll be tougher than the extra lessons you'd get if you stayed at school," he said.
This time, Eijiro joined in the depressing atmosphere with the rest. He figured that it would be something like that, especially after he told Mizuki she would be going through hell. It would seem that they were all dragged into the same situation. At least they weren't alone.
"That's all. Homeroom dismissed," Aizawa finished as he walked towards the door sliding it open. he stepped out and slid it closed behind him. He walked off, hands pocketed and thoughts kept to himself.
"Kirishima, you little…" Kaminari came in behind the redhead and he paled at the aura that emitted from him. Kaminari grabbed him by his shoulders and shook him drastically. "You knew that we could still go and didn't tell us! I thought we were bros!" He exclaimed.
"How did you know though? I mean, you didn't seem surprised that you or Mizuki failed. What's that all about?" Sero asked, a few others also wanting to know what was going on. Eijiro paled slightly and gave them a small smile.
"It's a bit complicated. You see-""Kirishima!" Eijiro didn't even have the chance to know what was happening before he was roughly grabbed by his collar. He was pulled out from his seat and met a pair of very angry red eyes.
"You failed?! How the hell could you fail?! You better tell me what's going on before I beat you up!" Katsuki threatened angrily and Eijiro blinked. Katsuki didn't know? Mizuki didn't tell him? Then why has he been in a bad mood since this morning?
"Bakugou-kun, that's enough! Stop rough handling the students! Kirishima-kun will explain it to us all if you give him the chance!" Iida scolded the male as he walked over, Katsuki's eyes glared at him and caused him to stop in his tracks.
"Shut up, Four-Eyes! This has nothing to do with you!" He snarled angrily and then looked at the stoic Eijiro, his scowl deepening. "You better start speaking, Shitty Hair! How is it possible that she failed?!"
Eijiro frowned and put a hand over Katsuki's wrist. "There's no need to lose your temper, Bakugou. We didn't meet the criteria needed to pass, that's all. If you want to know that badly then go and ask her," Eijiro told the male.
It wasn't his place to tell the twin the truth. If she didn't want to tell him, then he respected that decision. Besides, this wasn't the place for him to say anything either. She wanted to sort out her own thoughts before telling everyone.
"HAH?! You little-""Kacchan, stop it. This isn't the place for this. I'm sure there's a reason why Mi-chan didn't say anything," Izuku cut off the angry teen. He frowned deeply, brows furrowed and Katsuki scowling at him.
"Deku, you-""Midoriya's right. This isn't the way to handle this. You're acting like an insolent child. Haven't you done enough already?" Shoto cut off the ash blonde male and the atmosphere took a chilled turn.
Shoto stood there with a deep frown, his eyes showing a tinge of his anger. His words had everyone blinking in confusion. Izuku's eyes briefly widened and he then averted his eyes. Katsuki, on the other hand, froze up immediately and gave Shoto a murderous look.
"What did you say, Bastard?"
"I said, haven't you done enough already? Haven't you already made enough damage?" Shoto asked and Eijiro gave the male a blank look. He didn't know what was going on but something wasn't right here. He was missing something.
"Todoroki-kun, what do you mean by that? Did something happen?" Ochaco asked, her voice uncertain and laced with concern. The divided coloured hair male was probing at something. Could it be the reason she wasn't at school?
"You should ask Bakugou. He was the one who had Mizuki in tears and now she isn't at school. It seems very coincidental, doesn't it?" Shoto stated and had everyone's eyes widen at his words. Katsuki shook with anger, veins palpitating out from his skin.
"Mizuki…cried…?" Eijiro's voice was barely audible, his heart sinking into his stomach. Bakugou made Mizuki cry? That didn't sound right. She was fine when he said his goodbye... Was that why she was cutting herself off from the world?
"You piece of shit. I'll kill you!" Katsuki went to attack Shoto, Eijiro acting fast enough to grab the male to stop him. Shoto stood ready, his arm cooling down as he activated his ice and his eyes blazed angrily.
"Let me go!"
"Stop it! This isn't the place to be fighting!" Eijiro told the raging male as he held him tightly. "Calm down already! What is Todoroki talking about? Did something happen?" He asked, Katsuki growling while Shoto's eyes darkened.
"That's what I want to know too. What did you say to her?" Shoto asked, Katsuki gritting his teeth as his hair hid his eyes. Shoto clenched his fist and felt his anger course through him. "What did you tell her, Bastard?!"
"That's enough, both of you." Iida stepped between the two of them, his hand stopping Shoto from attacking Katsuki. "Instead of fighting, don't you think we should be supporting Mizuki-kun instead? She isn't here and the last thing she would want is for everyone to fight," he stated.
Everyone backed away from the fight, the girls fearful of what the two males were going to do to attack each other. The boys were also standing on the side, very uncertain what was going to happen if the two strongest in the class started a fight.
Shoto clicked his tongue and averted his eyes. Mizuki would hate it if she found out that they were fighting, even so he hated it to see her that upset. She failed the exam and then her brother made everything worse.
"Let go of me!" Katsuki shoved Eijiro off him. He gave both Shoto and Izuku a deadly glare before storming out of the classroom. He took most of the tension with him and enabled the rest of the class to take a breath.
"Geez, that was intense. For a moment I really thought he was going to kill someone," Kaminari spoke, Mina nodding weakly next to him. They could still feel the chills on their skin, small trailed of sweat cascading down the side of their faces.
"Kirishima-kun, are you alright?" Izuku asked as he walked over towards the redhead. Eijiro kept his stare at the door where Katsuki left, his brows furrowed in concern. He caught sight of the sadness and guilt beneath the aggression, something no one else saw.
"Yeah, I'm fine." He turned back to the green haired boy. "Do you know what happened between them?" He asked and Izuku's face fell. He knew. He knew very well. After all, he had witnessed the fight and couldn't stop them.
"I thought you would know. Isn't that the reason why Mizuki isn't at school?" Shoto asked as he joined in the conversation. He was much calmer but his eyes showed the storm that was brewing inside him.
Eijiro's eyes widened when he realized what was going on. They all thought that she stayed at home because of the fight and assumed that he knew. Now that he didn't know, he was placed in a very uncomfortable situation.
His facial expression fell and he silently apologized to Mizuki. "No, Aizawa Sensei gave her permission to stay at home because of yesterday. She, um, needed to recover from the match," he excused and Shoto's eyes narrowed, Izuku blinking.
Mizuki had to rest because of the match- His eyes widened as his thoughts came to one single conclusion. The Quirk. She knew. Eijiro knew. They all knew of the secret and tried to keep it under wraps. Everyone, including Katsuki, was completely unaware of everything.
"If you don't want to tell me, then leave it. I'll find out myself," Shoto stated, his tone filled with annoyance. There was clearly something going on more than the fight she had with her brother. Eijiro was a terrible lair and it only added to his agitation.
He went to push passed Eijiro, his destination also passed the door but his arm was grabbed by the said male before he could take another step. The grip on him had his eyes darkening drastically, the memory of how he grabbed his wrist the previous day flashing through his thoughts.
"Wait, Todoroki. Where are you going? Please don't tell me you're going to pick a fight," Eijiro silently pleaded. Everything was already a mess. If Shoto went to fight with Katsuki it would only lead to more trouble.
"Kirishima, is you don't take your hand off me right now, I won't take responsibility for what I'm going to do," Shoto threatened the male. His dark tone had a shiver run down their spines and Eijiro reluctantly let go of the male. Shoto exited the room, slamming the door behind him.
"I-I don't think I've ever seen Todoroki-kun that angry before," Ochaco stuttered slightly, Tsuyu nodding in agreement. They could vaguely make out what was happening but there was a lot of questions that were lingering unanswered.
"What were those two thinking? We have class after this! That is no way to handle conflict! It would've been bad if one of the teachers walked in!" Iida pointed out, a deep frown plastered on his lips.
Eijiro rubbed the back of his head and let out a sigh. This entire situation was a mess. They were going on a training camp together but with the tension in the air he didn't know if it was such a good idea. What was he going to do?
Mizuki, I hope that at least, you're alright.
Mizuki lay on her bed in the darkness of her room, her curtains still closed and blocking as much light as possible. She stared into the nothingness, sleep avoiding her like a plague and phone abandoned on her desk.
Every time she closed her eyes, she was either reminded of those she hurt with her Quirk or the words her brother spoke. She tried to design for a bit to get her thoughts off her problems but the moment she opened her designing book, she saw her brother's text.
'Don't stop with your stupid designing.'
Mizuki curled up into a ball and clenched her eyes tightly as she felt the sadness wash over her. Her eyes were tired and dried out. She cried enough already. She was tired from feeling like hell and she was tired of lying pathetically on her bed.
She went for a jog earlier, hoping to clear her thoughts and get out the emotions that welled up inside her. Unfortunately, it backfired against her. The more she tried to run from everything, the more it came back to haunt her. She couldn't find anything to distract her.
Mizuki clicked her tongue and sat up on her bed. She hated this. She hated missing school and she hated not being there to at least have something or someone take her thoughts of everything. Yet, she knew that if she did go to school, it would only make her feel worse.
"…I want you to talk to your parents about everything and take a day to recover. Your body has two Quirks residing inside you. The strain isn't just physically…"
Yeah, yeah, I know already. Mizuki answered the nagging voice of her homeroom teacher from within her thoughts. She pushed herself out of her bed, and went to open the door. She flinched at the bright lights and blinked a few times. The darkness of her room may not have been such a good idea after all.
She closed the door behind her, crimson orbs subconsciously glancing at her brother's room. She felt a painful pang in her chest and averted her eyes away. He was still at school, neither of them talking or coming near each other.
Masaru sat by the living room couch, the newspaper opened up in front of him. Instead of reading what stood in front of him, he merely stared. He was worried. Deeply worried about Mizuki and it had been eating at him for the entire day.
Mitsuki found an email sent by her homeroom teacher that she was tor rest for the day and explained that she would be seen at the training camp. It stated that more details about everything would be given later on but it didn't ease the panic that arose within them.
"She still hasn't come out. Maybe I should go and see if she's doing okay," Mitsuki spoke as she brought each of them a cup of coffee. Masaru glanced at his wife and then sighed as he closed the newspaper, putting it down on the table.
"She'll come out to talk to us eventually. If we pressure her too much then we'll only make it worse. If she hasn't come out by tonight, then we'll go talk to her," Masaru said and Mitsuki pressed her lips together.
Something was incredibly wrong and she feared that it involved the twins. It was obvious that they fought but the outcome was something they never experienced before. For Mizuki to become like this…she didn't even want to think of what happened.
Katsuki didn't say anything either. He didn't speak to them and snapped at them when he was asked. His anger was worse than usual and his blazing eyes were filled with hurt and guilt. He did something that he was regretting and they could do nothing because they knew nothing.
It was frustrating.
"Mom. Dad, are you busy?" Mitsuki jumped up at her daughter's voice, Masaru's eyes wide when he saw Mizuki standing at the end of the staircase. They could feel their hearts break at the pained and tired expression she wore.
"No! Not at all! Is something the matter, Sweetie? Are you hungry? Should I make you lunch?" Mitsuki asked, trying to clutch to the girl, desperate to have her talk. Mizuki shook her head and walked towards them.
"No, thank you, I'm not hungry." Her answer made them worried. She hadn't eaten since the previous day. "I… I have something to tell you but I'm not sure if I can…" Mizuki's voice was small and uncertain, eyes quivering as she stared at the ground.
"Mizuki, you know that you can tell us anything. Come and sit here with us, then you can tell us everything," Masaru said and patted on the couch between him and Mitsuki as the older female went to sit down.
Mizuki hesitated and swallowed thickly. How was she going to do this? What was she thinking? She couldn't do this! She was still trying to understand what was going on. It would be better if Aizawa came and talked to them.
"You know what, never mind. I'll be in my room-""Wait! Is this about Katsuki? Did you two have a fight?" Mitsuki halted her daughter and watched as she flinched. Mizuki's eyes flashed in pain and had their eyes widen.
"I wish you would disappear already!"
Mizuki could feel the tears sting her eyes and gritted her teeth. She pressed her trembling lips together, her vision blurring through the teary water. Hadn't she cried enough already? Why was she this emotional?!
She felt a warm pair of arms wrap around her as Mitsuki pressed her close to her chest. Her mother wore a warm and kind expression, a soft smile on her lips. Warmth and comfort washed over Mizuki and it had the tears fall freely down her cheeks.
"It's alright, Sweetie. You can let it all out. We're here for you," Mitsuki spoke and held her daughter as her body trembled. Mizuki's hands clenched her mother's shirt, her teeth gritted as she tried to fight the tears.
"I'm sorry… I'm sorry… This is all my fault… I hurt them… I hurt him… I made a mess of everything!" Mizuki sobbed, her father's hand rubbing her back soothingly. Mitsuki's brows furrowed but she kept her warm smile.
"What are you talking about?"
"Katsuki… I hurt him… I hurt Red… I keep hurting people. I didn't want this. I don't want this stupid Quirk! I'd rather be Quirkless than keep hurting people!" Mizuki cried out and her parent's eyes widened in alarm.
"Mizuki, can you explain to us exactly how you hurt them? We know that you would never hurt anyone," Masaru said and Mizuki sniffed. She broke half of the embrace with Mitsuki, her eyes hidden beneath a shadow.
"I-I have another Quirk." They blinked. "Aizawa Sensei and the principal told me about it yesterday. It all started that day at the USJ incident and since then it's been growing stronger. T-Then…yesterday…it awakened and it hurt Red. I hurt him. I-I couldn't stop," she said and they gasped.
Wait, what?
"You have another Quirk? T-That's not possible. When you were diagnosed with a Quirk years ago, they only found one," Mitsuki pointed out, her daughter wiping away her tears. She glared at the ground, biting her lower lip.
"It's true. I never had post-concussion symptoms. It was all because of this cursed thing inside me. I was a danger…no, I'm still a danger to everyone. I don't know how to control it and I don't know anything about it either," Mizuki glanced at her parents.
"That's why Aizawa Sensei gave me the day off. He wanted me to rest and talk to you about it. He wants to make sure that I have your permission to go to the training camp where he wants to train me for better control," she concluded and a part of her felt lighter after the reveal.
"Do you trust him?" Masaru asked, the women's eyes widening at his earnest and serious tone. "Do you trust your teacher to help you?" He repeated the question and Mizuki swallowed, a hesitant breath leaving her mouth. She inhaled deeply and gave her father an affirming nod.
"Then we trust him too."
"I agree with your father. If you feel that you have to do this, then we're right behind you. We'll support you in this but only as long as you tell us the truth. We can't help you if you keep things from us, okay?" Mitsuki stated as she wiped away Mizuki's tears.
"I understand…"
"Good, now, surely these tears have a much deeper meaning than what you're telling us. You said that you hurt Kirishima-kun but how did you hurt your brother?" Mitsuki asked and watched as Mizuki averted her eyes to the ground.
Masaru saw the expression on his daughter's face and put a hand on her shoulder. "I'm going to make you some tea and then you can tell us everything. Will that be alright with you?" Masaru suggested and she weakly nodded.
Mitsuki put a hand on her daughter's head and gently ruffled her hair. A warm smile came onto her face and she used her other hand to lift her daughter's chin to look at her. She put one hand on her hip and confidently stood.
"Double Quirk or even Quirkless, we'll always love you and be there for you, Brat. Don't you ever forget that, you hear?" She told the girl as tears cascaded down her daughter's face as she pulled a face filled with sadness.
"Even if I did something terrible?"
"Ha! I doubt that you will ever do anything terrible! The day you don't give me any grandchildren is the day that you do something terrible. So, don't even think about it!" Mitsuki threatened light heartedly at the end and had Masaru chuckling, Mizuki involuntarily letting out a laugh.
"Stupid, Mom."
"Who're you calling stupid, Brat?! I'm serious! I won't ever forgive you if I don't at least have mini Mizuki's running around, blowing everything up or whatever they do!" Mitsuki countered and Mizuki let out another laugh, the pain in her heart lightened.
Masaru watched the two interact, the sound of Mizuki's laugh easing his own heart. He smiled, and stepped into the kitchen. He might not know everything that happened or the burden she carried but as long as she was able to smile, she would be just fine.
She was a Bakugou, after all.
