Take on the World
Chapter 1: Back to New York
(2012)
Riley Stark finished the last sketches of her notebook and placed it in her cyan blue coloured backpack as she and the other passengers heard the following announcement in the plane.
"Good afternoon passengers. This is your captain speaking. First I'd like to welcome everyone on Rightwing Flight 86A. We are currently cruising at an altitude of 33,000 feet at an airspeed of 400 miles per hour. The time is 1:25 pm."the Captain's voice reported."The weather looks good and with the tailwind on our side we are expecting to land in New York approximately fifteen minutes ahead of schedule. The weather in New York is clear and sunny with a high of 25 degrees for this afternoon. If the weather cooperates we should get a great view of the city as we descend. I'll talk to you again after we reach our destination. Until then, sit back, relax and enjoy the rest of the flight."
Riley bit her lip at the captain's declaration.
Fifteen minutes left until the plane landed in New York.
The eleven year old girl brought her attention to the small window next to her which revealed the view outside.
The sky was lovely and pale blue, dotted with wisps of white clouds.
It was all so perfectly calm.
She was returning to New York after spending time with her maternal grandparents (Reginald and Anita Valentini) for the Easter holidays in Seville; the capital of Andalusia, a region of southern Spain. The city sits on the banks of the river Guadalquivir, where Christopher Columbus embarked on his historic trip to America.
The city is famous for its architectural beauty, including Giralda, the famous cathedral bell tower and Alcázar, the royal palace. But the best way to experience the spirit of Seville is to walk along its twisty street and get lost in the charming atmosphere.
But now Riley was going back to New York to be with her father, Tony Stark; a man that was a genius, billionaire, playboy and philanthropist as well as famously known world-wide as the superhero, Iron Man. Including her father's girlfriend and assistant, Pepper Potts, who she looked up to as a mother-figure.
Soon the plane arrived to its destination and landed in the Kennedy International Airport.
Riley placed her backpack on her back as she followed the rest of the passengers out of the plane and to the airport bus.
She enjoyed her time with her maternal grandparents, but her time now was to be back to be with her loved ones in the Big Apple and getting back to another term at school.
After having her passport checked, Riley made her way to the women's toilet to check her appearance.
She wore a lemon print top with dark brown embroidered jacket that was a bit sparkly and blue jeans. Lastly, a pair of white blue trainers and an Omega pendant on a silver chain around her neck.
Riley carefully brushed her wavy chestnut brown hair a bit to check that each side was perfect with no frizziness before giving a small yet bright smile at her appearance.
Now she was ready.
Riley took her backpack and then left the women's toilet to head to the lounges to see the other passengers meet up with the people that were waiting for them.
She, on the other hand, made her way out of the airport, just in time to see a limo arrive in front of her.
The door of the backseat opened, revealing her father, Tony Stark, who stepped out to greet her.
"Hey, kiddo."Tony greeted.
"Dad!"Riley said happily.
Riley embraced Tony, who hugged her back before the two went back inside the limo that would take them back to New York.
"So, what's up, Dad?"Riley asked."How's Pepper, Happy and everybody else?"
"Great. Everybody's great."Tony replied with a smile."Can't wait to see you. Two weeks really is too long. A lot's been happening."
"A lot's happened to me, too, Dad."Riley remarked."I've done so many things in Seville. Seen a lot of flowers, music, flamenco dancers and boys-"
Riley smiled sheepishly when she notice Tony raising an eyebrow at her for mentioning the 'b' word.
"Were you hanging out with boys?"Tony questioned with a frown.
"Maybe..."Riley answered lowly.
Tony shook his head.
"Riley, I've had this talk with you before."Tony reminded."All boys are bad. All of them."
Riley let out a sigh, knowing her father was in his over-protective mode.
"Yes, dad, yes. But I also hang out with girls too."Riley assured."Overall, Seville was so much fun. I ate lot of Granny Anita's tapas and even learned how to dance the flamenco."
"That's nice, Rye-Rye."Tony praised.
"You know you and Pepper should come to Seville, dad."Riley insisted."You both like sunshine and liqueur. I'm sure the two of you would enjoy it."
Tony let out a small wince at Riley's request.
"Yeah. That's a nice offer, kiddo."Tony stated."But your grandparents hate my guts and I don't think that will ever change."
A small frown appeared on Riley's face.
"Oh."Riley replied simply."That's too bad."
The limo moved out of the highway and eventually arrived to New York City.
People littered the streets and sidewalks.
Life there in the City that Never Sleeps was upbeat and fast-paced and everyone and everything was moving.
Riley did a small wave to the people outside, who took photos at her and her father.
Soon, the limo stopped by outside Stark's Tower before Riley and Tony walked out of it.
Stark Tower was a high-rise building complex that was constructed by Tony Stark and was powered by an Arc Reactor that made it capable of running itself for over a year.
The top ten floors housed the research and development initiatives.
But overall, it was the home residence of the Starks.
Tony and Riley headed inside the Stark Tower and came out of the elevator to walk inside the top floor as J.A.R.V.I.S. greeted them.
"Welcome home, sir and Miss Riley."J.A.R.V.I.S. greeted.
"Thanks, Jarvis."Riley replied brightly."It's good to be home."
Then Pepper came into the room to greet them.
"Hey, Riley."Pepper responded."Welcome back."
Riley chuckled as she embraced Pepper in a hug.
"Hi, Pepper. I've missed you too."Riley admitted."I hope you and dad weren't too lonely without me."
Tony chuckled as he ruffled his daughter hair a bit, making it look a bit more wild.
"Oh, trust me, kiddo."Tony assured smugly."We weren't too lonely."
Tony and Pepper share a kiss with each other, making Riley frown and gag at them.
"Ew."Riley said in disgust."Come on, guys. I just got back. No need to act so gross with each other on my return."
"Don't worry, Riley."Pepper assured teasingly."When you get a boyfriend, you'll understand."
"Sure."Riley replied in a low tone.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, Rye-Rye is not old enough to date."Tony reminded firmly, acting overprotective."She's just a kid."
"Dad, I'm eleven years old."Riley reminded.
"Exactly."Tony answered."You're still a kid."
Riley simply shrugged at her father's reply.
The young brunette then made her way to bedroom to remove a couple of things from her backpack including a few clothes, a notebook and camera.
Riley's bedroom had a dresser while one side was a silver chair with a Hello Kitty plush toy sitting on it and on the other side was a tall box with a yellow curtain. The walls with the windows and the door had pink and white stripes on them while the other two walls were light blue. Her bed had a pink frame and was covered by white pillows and sheets and a lavender purple blanket with yellow crescent moons and pink stars on it. Besides the bed was a small table where she does her homework. There was one shelf in the corner between the windows and closet with flower pot on the top. The other shelf sits on the end of the wall with the door, where a couple of books and a radio were kept.
Next to Riley's bed were framed pictures that showed various events of Riley's childhood with Tony and Pepper. As well as a few photos of her as a toddler with her grandparents and late mother, Matilda 'Hattie' Valentini.
A bittersweet smile appeared on Riley's face as she planted a small kiss on the photo of her mother, who was the very person she missed deeply.
"I miss you, mummy."Riley whispered gently.
Riley then made her way out of her bedroom to join Tony and Pepper in the living room.
"Hope you're hungry, kiddo."Tony declared."Pepper made that baked ziti you liked so much."
"Yay."Riley chuckled in delight."Pepper's cooking is awesome."
"So is mine?"Tony assumed.
Riley gives Tony a rather anxious grin on his question.
One time he made pancakes for her on her 9th birthday and they were pretty burned and she had to eat them all up to make him happy. Though her tummy was left hurting for a few days until recovering.
"Of course, dad."Riley assured brightly."You're awesome on everything and not only because you're Iron Man."
"Then I'll be the to cook breakfast tomorrow instead of you."Tony declared.
Riley felt butterflies in her stomach, but kept wearing her utterly charming yet nervous smile.
"Great…"Riley replied in a soft yet anxious tone.
Tony moved to the counter to pour himself a glass of old scotch whisky as Riley quietly spoke to Pepper.
"No way to make him change his mind?"Riley whispered.
"You know how your father is, Riley."Pepper replied."Once he starts something, there is no way to change his mind."
Riley shrugged. "Fair enough."
