Take on the World

Chapter 9: Battle of New York Part 1

Riley didn't bother to make a run for it as she was the first to step out of the black van that arrived outside the Stark Tower.

The moment she stepped out of the back, Loki and Dr Erik Selvig followed closely behind her.

Riley made her way to the front entrance and pressed a button on an intercom system by the door before she stared up at the camera situated above the door.

"Hey there, Judd."Riley greeted with a wave.

"Good afternoon, Miss Stark."A security guard greeted."Welcome back."

Then a buzzing and clicking sound was heard, signalling that the door had been unlocked.

The security guard on the other side pushed the door open, smiling at Riley kindly as she was gestured inside.

Riley smiled lightly at the security guard before stepping through and stood to the side to allow Loki and Dr Selvig to pass.

A number of Loki's other brainwashed henchmen filed in carrying crates filled with the scientific equipment.

The security guard glanced at Riley due to being confused at the amount of people coming inside the building.

"S.H.I.E.L.D. business."Riley responded with a slight shrug."What else do you expect?"

Riley made her towards the elevator, where Loki waited patiently for her.

Dr Selvig had gone up in the service elevator, having needed to get to work as quickly as possible, accompanied by the men carrying the crates.

Riley frowned as she gestured Loki into the elevator and stepped inside after him, staring at the screen situated beside the doors which slid shut.

After scanning the numbers on the screen, the brunette picked the highest number before placing her finger on the sensitive screen to have it scanned.

Then a message popped up saying 'Welcome back, Miss Riley Stark.'.

Loki and Riley soon arrived at the penthouse and stepped out of the elevator.

"Here we are, Horn Head."Riley declared in a sarcastic tone."Home sweet home."

Loki smirked as he strode towards the windows with the sceptre in his hand.

"This magnificent tower of yours will do, Miss Stark."Loki declared."From here, I can watch your world burn."

Riley glared at Loki.

"My dad and friends won't let that happen."Riley informed.

"Don't rely on them, my dear."Loki complemented."They will meet their end if they try and stop me."

"And that gives you permission to keep me a prisoner in my own house?!"Riley snapped.

"Since I have more power than that father of yours, I'm afraid so."Loki said casually.

Riley rolled her eyes as she made her way to sit on one of the sofa chairs.

However, after a couple of seconds, the brunette lost her patience and sat up from where she sat.

"Hey, Lokitty!"Riley scowled, bravely walking over to the madman in her house."You seriously are going to do this? Unlock a portal to release an alien army to enslave humanity just so you can sit on a throne?"

Loki frowned as he brought his attention back on Riley.

"Can't you see what you're doing is utterly wrong!"Riley argued with a glare."All you'll get from this is people seeing you as a twisted monster!"

"Don't lecture me, Miss Stark."Loki retorted, unfazed by the brunette's outburst."Your people slaughter one another almost every day and you don't see them as monsters? You, humans, obviously need some guidance."

"Okay, I get finding out your adopted had been a shock and an utter issue for you, Loki."Riley scowled, trying to be calm."But lashing out and trying to enslave all of humanity because of that won't make you feel any better!"

A scoff escaped from Loki's mouth.

"It would be wise for you to know your place, child."Loki snarled."I'm a God and your little words of wisdom mean nothing to me. I'll soon be the King of Midgard. In return, you and all humans will be kneeling before me."

"Stop talking nonsense."Riley protested with a desperate look."Having power and revenge won't do anything but bring sorrow and pain. Are you utterly blinded by the hatred that you have for your brother?"

Riley paused herself from talking when Loki brought the sharp edge of his sceptre close to her neck.

He wasn't going to kill her.

Was he?

"I was beginning to grow fond of you. You're keen. Though I can clearly seeing your bickering is becoming quite an intolerance."Loki admitted in a cold tone."But if you really value your own life, you will go and sit down as well as keep your mouth shut."

Despite Loki giving her an icy yet menacing glare, Riley put her hands up in defence before she swiftly backed away from the God of Mischief.

"Alright, signore."Riley answered simply as she made her way back to the sofa and sat down."I shall now sit down and zip."

Riley moved her hand to her mouth before using her fingers to close it as if it had a zipper to close it.

Loki rolled his eyes before making his way outside and go to the balcony to check on Dr Selvig.

The moment that Loki left, Riley quickly went off from where she sat and picked up her small digital pink video camera that was in the small counter nearby and hiding it on a vase on the table next to the sofa furniture.

"Never underestimate the wrath of a Stark."Riley informed with a smug tone."Even if the Stark is still a kid."

After the digital camera was safely hidden, Riley went back to where she sat and took out a cherry lollipop from her pocket and place it in her mouth.

"Dad would probably scold me for having sugar before lunch, but I need the sugar to boost me up."Riley thought brightly.

Tony worked as fast as he can to fix his suit so it's suitable for flight.

It had taken damage when he had fixed the Helicarrier engine.

He didn't know why it had taken him so long to figure it out.

Of course Loki would go to the tower.

It would give him all the power he needed to use the Tesseract and it gave him a prime vantage point.

He flew out as soon as the suit was ready, still barely held together, but as long as he can get to the tower, he can get a new suit.

He didn't quite know what to expect as he flew towards the Stark Tower.

He tried not to think about what Loki could have done to Riley during the time it had taken him to realise where she was and get there.

Loki was standing outside on the tower's balcony while Tony landed causing the machines to come up to take the armour off him as he walked towards the door.

Loki followed, using the door on the other side of the balcony to enter.

Tony's eyes scanned the room, searching for his daughter.

He needed to know she was alright.

He felt partly responsible for this.

After all, Riley being kidnapped by a psychopath was his own stupidity that had caused it.

The billionaire then saw Riley saw was sitting down in a sofa chair and appeared to have a white stick on her mouth.

Was she seriously calm and having a Chupa Chups lollipop in a time like this?

"Please tell me you're going to appeal to my humanity."Loki insisted.

Tony stopped at the stairs near his mini-bar.

"Uh...actually, I'm planning to threaten you."Tony replied."The moment you took my kid, you caused no second chances to be given to you."

The billionaire tried his best not to jump on the God of Mischief right away, but seeing that Riley was actually unharmed was enough to hold him back.

"You should have left your armour on for that."Loki clarified.

"Yeah, it's seen a bit of mileage. You've got the blue stick of destiny."Tony exclaimed as he arrived in his mini-bar."Would you like a drink?"

Tony gives Riley a quick glance and felt like she was trying to tell him something with her eyes, but he didn't get it.

A simple laugh escaped from Loki's mouth.

"Stalling me won't change anything."Loki informed as he handed the sceptre into the grip of his left hand.

"No, no, no! Threatening!"Tony declared before gesturing to his selection of liquor behind the counter."No drink, are you sure? I'm having one."

Ignoring Tony, Loki went up to the window and glanced at the peaceful view of New York City.

"The Chitauri are coming, nothing will change that."Loki stated and looked back at Tony."What have I to fear?"

Tony takes the lid off of the ornate glass bottle that held the whiskey.

"The Avengers."Tony admitted.

A confused expression appeared on Loki's face causing Tony to roll his eyes a little while Riley smirked at that.

"It's what we call ourselves, sort of like a team."Tony exclaimed as he poured some whiskey on his glass cup."Earth's Mightiest Heroes type of thing."

"Yes, I've met them."Loki sneered.

Tony lets out a fake chuckle.

"Yeah, takes us a while to get any traction, I'll give you that one. But, let's do a head count here."Tony admitted."Your brother, the demi-God."

Loki let out a small hiss at the mention of Thor as Tony continued talking while he quickly reached out for a pair of bracelets that were sitting on the counter and slipped them around his wrists.

"A super soldier, a living legend who kind of lives up to the legend a man with breath-taking anger management issues a couple of master assassins."Tony continued."And you, big fella you've managed to piss off every single one of them."

Loki smirked. "That was the plan."

"Not a great plan."Tony declared as he held up his glass cup and moved away from his mini-bar."When they come, and they will, they'll come for you."

"I have an army."Loki declared.

"We have a Hulk."Tony admitted.

Riley smiled proudly at her dad's reply.

"I thought the beast had wandered off."Loki commented.

"You're missing the point. There's no throne, there is no version of this, where you come out on top."Tony retorted sternly."Maybe your army comes and maybe it's too much for us, but it's all on you. Because if we can't protect the Earth, you can be damned well sure we'll avenge it."

"Dad…"Riley murmured quietly.

Tony takes a sip from his whiskey drink as Loki slowly walked up to him with an angry look.

"How will your friends have time for me, when they're so busy fighting you?"Loki retorted coldly."Yet I wonder how you'll react when you learn you hurt your own daughter?"

Riley paled at Loki's declaration, but kept quiet and fiddled with her empty lollipop stick quietly to distract her growing anxiety.

Tony's eyes widen when Loki brought up his sceptre to his chest.

Bur with a clink, it bounced off the arc reactor.

Loki looked confused as he attempted it again, but the same thing happened.

A soft sigh of relief escaped Riley's mouth that her father didn't fell in the influence of Loki's sceptre.

"This usually works."Loki commented.

"Well, performance issues. You know?"Tony replied with a mock sympathetic expression."It's not uncommon. One out of five, I'm told-"

Riley shrieked in terror as Loki abruptly seized Tony by the throat.

Tony's eyes widened with panic as he was tossed to the floor.

"J.A.R.V.I.S., anytime now."Tony muttered as as he climbed to his feet."Rye-Rye, run!"

Riley stood up from where she sat and ran off from the sofa area as Loki had moved swiftly to his side and grabbed him by the jaw.

"You will all fall before me!"Loki snarled with a furious look.

"Deploy!"Tony muttered."Deploy!"

Loki lifted Tony from the floor and hurled bodily through a window.

"DAD!"Riley cried out in shock.

Riley attempted to go after her father, but Loki turned around and shot a beam at the floor in front of her with his sceptre, purposely missing but sending her a warning.

"I so desperately want to punch you in the gut."Riley muttered angrily.

"I doubt you will be that of an issue."Loki answered.

Before the God of Mischief could step towards the young brunette, he spun around at the sound of a mechanical whirl and faced the ejection of a shiny metal capsule from its hidden space on the wall.

Riley rushed over to the crashed window and carefully watched the capsule head to her father.

"Please, hurry."Riley begged in worry.

Soon, the brunette's face brightened up when the capsule attached on her father and saved him from hitting the floor below.

A sneer appeared on Loki's face as Tony wearing his Iron Man rose to hover before him.

"And there's one other person you pissed off!"Tony admitted."His name was Phil."

This caused Riley to become alarmed.

"Was?"Riley murmured in confusion.

Loki raised his sceptre with a grin to hit Tony, but the billionaire raised a hand and fired a repulsor blast and knocked him backward.

Loki landed on his back with a yell as his sceptre clattered beside him.

However, Tony could move further into the floor the spinning device on top of the tower abruptly increased in speed and shot a blinding beam into the sky.

Riley ran to the balcony and gasped at the sight while her eyes to widen in utter shock at what she was seeing.

"Uh oh."Riley muttered in fear.

"Rye-Rye, go hide in your room and lock the door!"Tony demanded."Do not go out until I say so!"

"But, I-"Riley started.

"We'll talk later!"Tony answered."Go!"

Tony then headed up to the portal while Riley looked back at the hurt Loki and quickly scurried to her bedroom.

The moment she arrived to her bedroom, Riley locked the door before going underneath her bed to get her scarlet red coloured laptop.

After going to sit on her desk, Riley placed on her dark pink headphones and typed a few things in her laptop.

The laptop showed the view outside and a disturbed look appeared on Riley's face at seeing Chitauri aliens zoom out from the portal and heading into New York City.

"Crap. This isn't good."Riley complemented and contacted her favourite butler."J.A.R.V.I.S.!"

"Yes, Miss Stark?"J.A.R.V.I.S. asked.

"I need to contact my dad."Riley informed."Patch him through."

Loki watched in sickening joy as the Chitauri zoomed into New York and started attacking the mortals in the city, making them scream and run away in terror.

The Chitauri fired their rays into the streets throwing cars, blasting through the paved roads and causing fires.

Soon the Earth will belong to him.

Suddenly, Thor showed up at Starks Tower with Mjölnir in his hand.

"Loki!"Thor yelled out."Turn off the Tesseract or I'll destroy it!"

"You can't!"Loki shouted while pointing his sceptre down at him."There is no stopping it! There is only the War!"

"So be it!"Thor retorted.

Riley rushed to the living room, just in time to see Loki leap down with a yell and try to stab Thor with his sceptre.

Thor dodged to the side, swinging his hammer only for Loki to move behind his weapon and the hammer to impact the vertical length.

The Thunder God was thrown back with a noisy clang as his adopted brother jerked the tip of the sceptre from the flooring and sliced it in an arc around him to Thor crouching beneath the swing.

As he fought against Thor, Loki fired a blue beam from the tip to Mjölnir, deflecting a concussive blast with his hammer's head again.

The wreck of the 'R' and 'K' of the emblazoned 'STARK' on the tower shot through and its charred remains sent tumbling to the ground below.

Riley bit her lip at what she witnessed.

Hopefully, no body from below got hurt from that.

Tony soared overhead with four pairs of Chitauri trailing after him.

"Sir, Miss Stark is making contact with you."J.A.R.V.I.S. admitted.

"What?!"Tony scowled.

"Hey, dad!"Riley responded, her voice surprisingly cheerful."Good luck saving the world! I love you!"

A smirk appeared on Tony's face.

"Thanks, Rye-Rye. I love you too."Tony responded, feeling touched by his daughter's cheering."And you stay out of harms way."

"Alright!"Riley answered simply."But Horn Head and Thor are fighting in the balcony right now, but they don't know I'm here!"

"Good!"Tony replied."Far better to stay hidden than being in that crazy greasy hair's clutches again!"

The Quinjet flew over the edge of the city towards where the bright blue power beam of the Tesseract that was firing upwards.

"Stark, we're on your three."Natasha reported."Headed north-east."

"What?"Tony asked."Did you stop for a drive-through?!"

"Hey, Nat!"Riley greeted."How's it going?"

"Riley. Glad to hear you're fine."Natasha responded, happy the young brunette was fine."You had us worried."

"Steve?"Riley questioned.

"We feared the worst."Steve chuckled slightly.

"Who's that?"Clint asked.

"Tony's kid."Natasha answered.

"His what?!"Clint said in shock.

Tony frowned upon realising that J.A.R.V.I.S. connected his daughter through the team's communication system.

Or his daughter likely somehow used her laptop to contact the team.

"Enough with the chatter."Tony reminded sternly."Swing up Park. We're going to lay them out for you."

Tony flying passed a fight that was raging between Thor and Loki who were both throwing heavy hits just like Riley had told him.

The billionaire swerved to dodge the flurry of rays fired at him.

Natasha fired the rail gun at the Chitauri that tailed Tony before they crashed through one as Clint tilted the plane upward to fly over the building facing them.

"Sir, we have more incoming."J.A.R.V.I.S. warned.

"Fine."Tony said briskly in recognition before sounding determined."Let's keep them occupied."
