Take on the World

Chapter 12: Departures

Tony drove his Ferrari to Central Park while Riley flipped through her iPad to look at the different news reports on the Avengers.

Riley wore a white flower print top with a beaded bolero, blue patterned pants and black short boots. Her chestnut brown hair was styled in two loose ponytails.

The Stark heiress was watching a collection of different people pinning up different letters and objects to missing or dead loved ones.

People lighted candles in remembrance of those lost to them.

Riley saw the streets of New York covered in rubble, dead Chitauri and their old weapons.

News reporters took interviews of New York's residents and she grinned when she saw them wearing clothes designed after the Avengers' uniforms.

The brunette giggled lightly when she saw a man styling his facial hair after her dad.

Parades were being held in the Avengers' honour while some people cheered for them while others remained critical and viewed them as 'threats'.

Riley shook her head at the sight.

Of course, some people were never pleased.

After the Battle of New York City, there was some backlash towards the Avengers.

Some people saw them as saviours and heroes while others saw them as a danger to society as well as the world. Also, S.H.I.E.L.D. became much more known because of this entire thing.

They were all on thin ice with the Government at the moment due to the fact that they handed Loki over to Thor to receive trial on Asgard.

There was a lot of cleaning up to do, but thanks to S.H.I.E.L.D. and it's agents, the Avengers got to enjoy a well-deserved vacation with no bothers and that's exactly what they needed.

Riley used her hand to flip on her iPad again and saw the news showing an old man with white hair leaning over the back of his chair.

"Superheroes? In New York?"the old man scoffed."Give me a break!"

Riley raised an eyebrow while a curious smile grew on her face.

It was strange, but she felt she knew who this man was.

Tony leaned over to look at Riley's iPad as he continued to drive them towards the park.

"Whatcha watching, Rye-Rye?"Tony asked.

Riley smirked. "You and my other favourite superheroes, dad."

The smile on Riley's face shrunk a bit when she opened her backpack to look at the Captain America trading cards that had been a gift by Agent Coulson and Steve signed them.

She was going to miss Phil.

He had been someone who believed in heroes, second chances and in second lives.

There had been a funeral for him, so that he would never been forgotten.

But it was going to take some time for Riley to accept his passing.

As the billionaire and his daughter arrived at their designated place in the park, Tony climbed out of the Ferrari as Riley placed her iPad in her backpack before following him out.

The entire spot has been blocked off by S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and they stood around in dark suits with sunglasses.

If they were attempting to be indiscreet, they weren't doing a very good job.

Riley linked her arm with Tony's as he holds a silver suitcase in his other hand.

Tony smirked down at Riley when his eyes flash in her direction.

As the father-daughter duo walk towards the intricately designed cement railing, everyone else walked near them.

A small yet bright smile was on Riley's face as she saw Bruce, Steve, Natasha and Clint join her and her father in Central Park.

The group watched Thor take Loki, whose wrists were handcuffed and was wearing a metal gag so he couldn't speak.

It had been three days since the event that changed the whole world and the Avengers would be going their separate ways.

To ensure that this moment was not interrupted, a perimeter of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents formed a barrier against intrusion.

The group all come to a stop and watched as Tony sets the silver suitcase down onto the concrete before bending down to turn the key in the silver lock.

Inside the suitcase revealed the Tesseract inside before Bruce used a laboratory tong to carefully pick the cube up and safely inside a glass tube that Dr Selvig holds, ensuring that it won't ever hurt anyone ever again.

Steve glared at the Tesseract before it get locked within the glass cylinder.

Riley's eyes flickered up to Dr Selvig's and the two of them share a small smile before she made her way to Thor to give him a hug.

"It was nice meeting you, Uncle Thor."Riley remarked brightly."Be sure to come back to visit."

"I will, Lady Riley."Thor answered with a warm smile.

Riley brought her attention to Loki causing a smug look to appear on her face.

"I'll miss you too, sassy queen."Riley sneered as she lightly tapped Loki's arm before walking away from him."Have fun in jail."

The others chuckled lightly at Riley's declaration while Loki glared silently at the young brunette with an irritated look.

Natasha and Clint watched Loki before she leaned over and whispered something to him that made him smile.

Tony placed an arm over Riley's shoulder as the two of them alongside Natasha, Clint, Bruce and Dr Selvig watched Thor prepare to depart with Loki.

Thor gave them all a farewell nod before offering the other end of the teleporting device he held to Loki.

Reluctantly, Loki took the other handle and with a twist of the wrist, he and Thor were both engulfed in blue light.

Riley watched the sight in front of her in silence as Tony stepped the two of them back.

Tony, Riley, Bruce, Steve, Natasha, Clint and Dr Selvig all looked up as the beams pulled away and the two Asgardians disappeared, leaving a strange marking on the concrete.

Upon seeing Thor leave, Riley went over to Natasha to give her a quick yet tight hug.

"I'm going to miss you, Nat."Riley murmured.

"Hey, hey, no tears, Riley."Natasha remarked."It's just goodbye until next time."

Riley released Natasha and smiled at her, trying her best to look brave.

"I know."Riley commented."But I'm not a fan of saying goodbye either way."

Riley then went over to Clint to hug and he ruffled her hair a bit.

"See ya, Uncle Clint."Riley replied.

"Bye, Riley."Clint stated."Keep up with what you do."

"Okay."Riley chuckled lightly.

Riley moved away from Natasha and Clint, just in time to see Tony shake hands with Steve.

Tony notice Riley giving him a bright smile, realising his daughter wanted to talk to Steve.

"Only a few minutes."Tony informed.

Riley nodded at Tony before he walked away and she brought her attention on Steve.

"So Steve, any idea where are you going?"Riley asked curiously.

"Not exactly."Steve replied with a smile."But I am excited to know there is a whole new world waiting for me."

"Right."Riley agreed and got an idea."Hey. Maybe if you stop by in New York again, we can go watch a movie together? Don't worry. It won't be a Steamboat Willie or a Shirley Temple one."

"Sounds nice."Steve replied.

"Rye-Rye!"Tony called out.

Only 45 seconds had passed.

"Coming, dad!"Riley answered before smiling back at Steve."Wherever you go, I am sure you'll be able to figure something out, Steve. You are the Star Spangled Man with a plan after all. That's what I heard from a special lady."

There was a glimpse of confusion on Steve's eyes before it melted away when he realised who Riley was talking about.

"Margaret 'Peggy' Carter."Riley responded, saying her favourite surrogate great-aunt's name with caution.

"How is she?"Steve questioned.

"I'll tell you she has been holding up alright and had a happy life, but I think she still misses you. She talks about you all the time."Riley remarked before becoming serious."Please, go see her, Steve. Not just for her, but for you. You can't start the next chapter when the last one is still unfinished."

"You're kind of a little wise for being eleven."Steve praised.

Riley gives Steve a charming smile.

"It comes and goes."Riley complemented with a shrug.

On hearing this, Steve smiled and ruffled Riley's hair as a goodbye before she hugged him.

Bruce and Riley then make their way back to the Ferrari where Tony waited for them.

After pulling open the door, Riley hoisted herself up and sit down behind the two seats on the back of the car.

Bruce climbed in the passenger seat while Tony sat in the driver's seat.

Bruce was going to be hanging with the Starks for the next few weeks which was going to be nice for them.

Riley was going to have someone to bake treats while Tony was having his science bro to talk various things with.

Tony pressed hard on the gas and Riley gasped, desperately clinging at the headrests so she didn't fly off of the car.

The billionaire merely laughed and grinned back at his daughter in the rearview mirror.

Riley playfully rolled her eyes and looked around as the team continued to split apart.

Clint and Natasha drove off in the opposite direction in their darkly-tinted windows styled car while Steve climbed onto a classic looking motorcycle and drove behind them for a few minutes before he turned a corner.

Riley quickly gave Steve a wide smile and saluted at him, making him give her a salute back.

As the brunette turned back around, Riley rest her elbows on her knees and just watch the open road in front of her.

When the tower comes into view, Riley couldn't help but grin up at it.

A solitary 'A' still hangs where the word 'STARK' used to be.

But the young brunette actually didn't really mind.

After all, it wasn't really Stark Tower anymore.

Riley knew it from the moment she stepped in with Loki.

It's something else now.

It belonged to something more.

The Avengers have all gone their separate ways.

Not even S.H.I.E.L.D. knew all of their plans.

The team was apart for now which Riley was actually sad about.

However, she had a feeling that it won't be for long.

They've promised to come back when the world needed them to.

They'll be back.

The world needed the Avengers.
