CHAPTER 11
Afterschool, I walk into the room Keefe told me about. I guess he comes here a lot. When I walk in, a lady turns to look at me. We make eye contact. Oh god, it's Ms. Galvin.
She gives me a look. "Of course you're here. I should have given you detention myself"
I sigh and walk to one of the desks.
Of course, Keefe walks in a minute before detention starts. He takes the seat next to me.
"Hey Foster!"
I give him a stink eye and look away. There's no way I'm talking to him after he got me in trouble.
"I'm sorry ok! I didn't know that skeleton could hear whispers. He's like 80 years old!"
"Shh! We need to pay attention. I can't get in trouble again, especially with Ms. Galvin"
He sighs. "I guess that makes sense. Especially after you burned her beloved trench coat," he replies, giving me a small smirk.
Ugh. Like I needed to be reminded of that.
"You delinquents will need to clean and organize this room. After that, you need to write a paragraph about how you got in trouble and why you will not be doing it again. I hope to never see any of your faces after this," Ms. Galvin lectures.
She turns to us.
"Especially you Mr. Sencen. Haven't you been here enough?"
Keefe smirks. "Just wanted to keep you company Ms. Galvin"
She looks furious. "You know I spoke with your father over the phone the other day? He didn't seem impressed with the number of detentions you managed to rack up over the past few weeks. I'm sure he'll be having a talk with you once you leave."
I expect Keefe to remark back. But when I turn to him, he's just looking down.
Before I can ask what's wrong, Ms. Galvin tells us to join the others.
I get up and grab paper towels and a spray bottle. Keefe follows me. We head to the back of the classroom and start cleaning the back lab table.
After it feels like we've been scrubbing for forever, Ms. Galvin comes over and inspects our work. She grunts, "You missed a spot," pointing to a dusty corner.
I wait until after she turns before I roll my eyes. Keefe laughs.
We finally finish the table and move on to the next one. I look up to see that it has been 30 minutes.
"How long is detention?" I ask Keefe.
He shrugs. "Depends on the teacher. With Alexis it's only 45 minutes. But I once had one with Galvin that was 2 hours."
My jaw drops. I can't stay here for 2 hours! I need to work a shift at the vet today.
"Hey it's ok! At least you have me!"
"Yeah, so amazing! You know what would have been better?"
"What?"
"You not getting us in detention in the first place!"
"Hey don't act like it was all me. You also played game pigeon!"
"Yeah because you said that the teacher wouldn't notice!"
"Because he never does! You were just being extra loud!"
"I can't believe you're blaming ME for this. You're the one who's always in detention! You probably have an assigned seat in this classroom because of how often you're here!"
Keefe looks surprised. "Okay, how did you know about that!"
"I was joking but what!"
"Hey for your information it's a very comfortable seat!"
Ughhhhh. "Let's just get back to cleaning."
We clean for the next 20 minutes in silence. Finally, Ms. Galvin tells everyone to return to their seats.
I start to take out my computer for the paragraph, but Ms. Galvin shuts it immediately and hands me a paper and pencil.
"We're doing this the old fashioned way."
I take the paper and pencil from her and start the paragraph. About two sentences in, my hand starts hurting. I completely forgot about the burn, but I guess all the work I've been doing caused the pain to start again.
I wince, but try not to show any sign of the pain. I don't need Ms. Galvin seeing it and being reminded of today's incident.
I just write the rest of the paragraph with my other hand and hope it is legible. After completing the last sentence, I pack up all my stuff and hand in the paper.
Ms. Galvin grabs it and stuffs it in a folder. Without acknowledgement, she continues her work.
"Bye Ms. Galvin. See you tomorrow."
"Good bye."
I walk out of the classroom and try to find my way to the exit. Unfortunately, I still don't know the layout of this school.
"Need help?" A deep voice asks from behind me.
I turn and make eye contact with a pair of teal eyes. Fitz catches up to me.
I blush. "Hey Fitz. Yeah, I can't find the parent pick up exit."
"No problem. I can take you there."
I follow him as we walk down the hall.
"What are you doing here?" I ask.
I can't imagine someone like Fitz having detention.
"Student council meeting. We have them every Tuesday after school."
"Oh that's cool! What's your role?"
"I'm Class President," he says, smiling.
"Wow, that's so cool!" I say. Wait, am I using the word cool too much? What if he notices? Aaaah.
"Byee Fitz," a girl says as she passes us.
"Oh bye Melony," Fitz waves.
The girl sees me and narrows her eyes a little before leaving.
Hey, what did I do?
"Anyway, why are you after school?" he asks me.
I hesitate and then tell him.
"Woah you already got detention? How?" he says, a look of concern on his face.
"Well, Keefe and I had study hall and he TOLD me the teacher wouldn't notice us on our phones but he caught us and gave us detention."
He grimaces. "Yikes, I should have known Keefe was involved."
He pats me on the shoulder. "Don't worry, I'm sure you won't get in trouble again."
I blush at the contact. What is wrong with me?
We reach the doors and walk outside.
"Is your ride here?" Fitz asks.
I look around for Edaline.
"If not, I can drop you off at home," he offers, pointing to a white tesla in the parking lot.
"I thought you guys had a red tesla?"
"Oh, that's my mom's car. Mine is white."
They have multiple teslas?
Before I can say anything else, my phone starts ringing and Edaline's name lights up the screen. "Oh I think Edaline is here. Thanks for the offer though!"
"No problem. I'll see you tomorrow then?"
"Yep! Bye!"
He walks towards his car. I see Edaline's car in the pick up lane and climb into the passenger seat.
"Hey Sweetie, how was school?" she asks.
"Horrible!" I say, and tell her about everything that happened.
"Oh I'm sorry to hear that. I'm sure Ms. Galvin will forget about it eventually. Just try not to get into any more trouble and you won't have to see her more than once a day."
"Yeah, I guess you're right." I look out the window. Despite today not going as planned, I actually had a lot of fun. Maybe I was too hard on Keefe. I pull out my phone and text him.
Hey Keefe!
A few minutes later, I get a reply.
Sup, Foster.
Ugh, why do you always call me that?
Well I can't call you Sophie. Everyone calls you that.
Oh and you HAVE to be different from everyone.
Yep!
I smile.
Edaline notices. "Whatcha smiling at?"
"Oh nothing, I'm just texting Keefe."
"Oh ok," she says, as a huge grin forms on her face.
"Edaline! You know he's the one who got me in trouble in the first place!"
"Yeah, I know! But I'm sure he didn't mean to. And other than that, he seems like a nice boy!"
I groan. I do NOT need to have this talk right now.
"Maybe don't mention him getting you in trouble in front of Grady though," she says.
"Why not?"
"Oh, you know him and boys. As soon as he finds an excuse, he won't let you near any of them!"
"Ew, mom. Keefe and I are JUST FRIENDS."
"I know, I know," she replies, but the smile stays on her face.
I roll my eyes. We get home and I change quickly so I can make my shift on time. After two hours of working, I get back home and shower. I complete my homework and decide to text Keefe again.
Sorry for getting mad at you earlier. I was just scared of getting in trouble.
His reply comes in the next minute.
No worries Foster! Besides, you're cute when you're angry,
I blush.
Shut up!
Never!
I laugh.
Good night Keefe.
Night Foster.
