Showdown in Pewter City
We join Ash, Jake, Bulbasaur, Pikachu, Green, and Misty as they finally made their way out of Viridian Forest. Ash spots something ahead and becomes happy.
"Hey Jake, look over there" he said to his friend
Jake also looks ahead and smiled as he and Ash ran ahead to look at a big city
"Yay, Pewter City!" said Misty
"Is that what it looks like?" asked Green
"You've never been there, Green?" asked Jake
"Well, I've only seen it in books. To be honest, I never really been there in person" Green confessed
"That's okay, Green. Me and Ash have never been there either" said Jake. This made Green smile
"Bulbasaur"
"Phew. For a while there, I thought was gonna be in this forest for the rest of my life" said Ash as he sat on a rock
"Me too. It was a good thing that Samurai showed us the way out" added Jake
"Bulba" Bulbasaur agreed with Jake
"Pewter City is gray. The color of stone is. This town has always been famous for stone"
The group look down to see a strange bearded man wearing a red hat
"Huh? What the? Who is this old guy" asked Ash
"Never met him" answered Misty
"I've never seen him before in my life" replied Green
"That goes for me too. But if I were to guess, this guy is obviously some salesman" said Jake
"That's right, kid. The name's Flint. And your friend is sitting on one of my merchandises" said the man now known as Flint
"Oh sorry" said Ash as he stood up
The group then look at some of the "souvenirs" that Flint has
"So let me get this straight. You sell rocks?" asked Jake
"They're Pewter City souvenirs. Do you wanna buy some?" asked Flint
"No thanks" said Ash
"We're not interested. But thanks anyway" replied Jake
"Me and my friend are traveling to be Pokémon trainers" said Ash
Both Pikachu and Bulbasaur both sighed in exhaustion
"Well you're Pokémon sure look worn out. Why don't you follow me. I'll show you to the Pokémon Center. " said Flint as he walks off
"I guess he's not so bad" said Green
"You got that right, Green. I guess that goes to show you that looks can be deceiving" said Ash
"You said it" replied Jake
"By the way, that'll be a two dollar charge for resting on my rocks" said Flint as he came back
This caused Ash, Pikachu, and Misty to fall over in disbelief at what Flint was demanding.
"He's kidding right?" asked Green as she looks at Jake
"I don't think so" responded Jake with a sweat drop
At the Pokémon Center, Ash, Jake and Green were handing their Pokémon to Nurse Joy
"Please, revitalize my Pokémon" begged Ash
"Mine too" said Jake
"Can you also heal my Pokémon as well?" asked Green as she hands her Poké Balls to Nurse Joy
"Sure, right away you three" said Nurse Joy as she took the trays. Ash and Jake look at Nurse Joy in confusion
"Um, Nurse Joy?" said Ash in confusion
"Yes, I'm Nurse Joy" replied Nurse Joy
"How did you get here? Aren't you suppose to be in Viridian City?" asked Jake in confusion. Nurse Joy chuckles at this
"The Joy at Viridian City is my little sister. I'm the older Joy. I've heard nice things about you two boys. Very nice things" explained Nurse Joy
"Um, thank you" said Jake who is still confused
Green said nothing as she just watches in confusion
"By the way, have you two seen that poster?" asked Nurse Joy as she took the trays away
The boys and Green look to see a poster that is sponsoring a championship
"The Pokémon League Regional Championships! Hey Jake. Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" Ash asked Jake
"Oh yeah, buddy. If we're gonna be Pokémon Masters, then we got to compete there" said Jake excited
"That's a great idea, you two. What better way to get stronger than to compete in the championships" said Green
"Ha!" mocked Misty who was in front of the poster
"What are you laughing about, Misty?" asked Jake with a frown
"To compete in the regional championships, you need to beat gym trainers from different towns and get their badges as proof" informed Misty "Can you both do that?"
"Is that a challenge? I'm sure it's nothing that Ash and I can't handle" said Jake
"Yeah, what he said" added Ash
The group then heard laughter as Flint walks up to them
"Don't tell me you two are challenging Brock, the Pewter City Gym leader?" asked Flint in amusement
"That's what we're planning to do, Flint. As soon as our Pokémon are healed" said Jake
"Yeah. We'll have no problem beating them. Take us to this Brock's gym now. We'll beat him" said Ash
This only made Flint laugh
"You'll both beat him?" said Flint as he walks off laughing leaving the group alone
The group were then at a table having some lunch. Ash was steamed over Flint laughing at him
"Oooh! That Flint! Trying to make a fool out of me!" snapped Ash as he was eating
"Calm down, buddy. He's just trying to rile you up. I'm sure a gym challenge is nothing we can't handle" assured Jake
"Oh really? You both think you can win? Gym leaders are different from your everyday Pokémon trainer. They're much, much tougher" Misty told the boys
"She does have a point. Gym challenges are a lot different compared to regular Pokémon battles" said Green
"Thanks for the tip, Green. We haven't really experience Gym challenges yet. But when me and my friend do, we're going to train and fight them no matter how tough it may be" said Jake
Green smiled at what Jake said while Ash nods his head as he was still eating
"You sure have spirit, Jake" said Misty. She then turns to Ash.
"I'll tell you what, Ash. If you ask me really nicely, I'll help you and your friend out." she offered
"I don't need any help" said Ash as he continues eating. But that only seem to annoy Misty
"Is that so!? Fine with me! There's no way you two will beat Brock at the Pewter City Gym! Hmmph!" yelled Misty as she walks off
"Oh yeah!? We'll just see about that!" Jake called back
"That was a little rude, Ash" said Green
"I know, Green. But Misty will change her mind when me and Jake beat Brock and get that badge" said Ash as he finished his meal. He looks down to see the bill
"Hey! You can't leave me with the bill! Come back here!" he yelled after Misty
"Don't worry, Ash. I'll help pay" said Jake
"Me too. I think I have some money in my bag somewhere" added Green
"Thanks, you guys" said Ash gratefully
After paying for the food, Ash, Jake, and Green went back to pick up their Pokémon from Nurse Joy.
"Here you go you three. No more waiting. Your Pikachu, Bulbasaur, and all your other Pokémon are all back to normal" informed Nurse Joy as she gave their Poké Balls back
"Oh! Alright!" said Ash as he picked up his Poké Balls and his Pikachu jumps on his shoulders
"Thank you, Nurse Joy" said Jake as he picked up all his Poké Balls and picked up his Bulbasaur
"Bulba" said his Bulbasaur
"Thanks for healing them" said Green as she got her Poké Balls
"Now, let's get to that gym!" said Ash
The three trainers were in front of a large stone building.
"So, this is Pewter Gym?" asked Ash
"It sure is, buddy. It even says so up there" said Jake as he pointed upwards to the inscription on top of the building
"That is really obvious" commented Green
Just then the doors open and out came Elaine with a sad look on her face. Ash and Jake were shocked when they saw her. Even Green was surprised
"Elaine!" yelled both Ash and Jake
Elaine looks up and smiles as she saw them
"Ash! Jake!" she yelled
She then ran up to them and hugs them both which made Green a little jealous
"Fancy seeing you guys here" said Elaine
"Same to you, Elaine" said Jake
"Bulbasaur" said Bulbasaur
"Hey Bulbasaur" greeted Elaine
"Pikachu" said Pikachu
"No way! Ash, is that your Pikachu?" asked Elaine in surprised
"He sure is, Elaine" answered Ash
"Oh, he's so adorable" said Elaine as she scoops up Pikachu and hugs him tightly which was very uncomfortable to Pikachu
"Um, Elaine. I think you're hugging Pikachu too tight" warmed Jake
"Huh?" she asked
Pikachu then zaps Elaine causing her to let go of him. She then fell to the ground paralyzed a bit
"Sorry about that, Elaine. I guess Pikachu doesn't like to be hugged too tightly" said Ash
"Heh heh. Lesson learned. Sorry, Pikachu" said Elaine as she apologized to Pikachu
"Pikachu" Pikachu assured
Elaine then notices Green
"Oh, who's this?" asked Elaine
"This is Green. Our new friend" answered Jake. "Green this is is Elaine"
"Hi, Green. It's nice to meet you" said Elaine as she sticks out her hand
"Yeah, nice to meet you too" responded Green as she shook off the jealousy and shakes Elaine's hand
"So, are you two about to challenge Brock?" Elaine asked Ash and Jake
"We sure are, Elaine" said Jake. "Did you beat him already?"
"Bulbasaur?"
"Actually, I was defeated. Brock's Pokémon is really tough to beat in there. That's why I'm going to train hard before I challenge him again" answered Elaine
"I see. Well Misty did told us that Gym leaders are much tougher." said Jake
"But I'm confident, we're gonna win this" said Ash
"Well then, I wish you two luck. You're both are gonna need it" said Elaine as she walks off while waving goodbye to them.
"Bye, Elaine" said Jake
"Bulbasaur" said Bulbasaur
"So, about Elaine?" asked Green
"She's an old friend of ours back in Pokémon Summer Camp" said Ash
"Yeah, we use to compete in a lot of events during those times. That also includes seeing different Pokémon during our hikes" added Jake
"I see. She must be a really good friend" said Green with jealousy in her voice
"Anyway, let's go inside" said Ash
The three trainers opens the door and went inside the gym.
"HELLO!" called out Ash loudly
The three trainers along with Pikachu and Bulbasaur looked around.
"Who goes there?" asked a male voice
A line shine on to reveal a man with tanned skin with his eyes closed. He appears to be older then the trainers. He is sitting with his legs crossed
"Huh?! So you must be Brock. I'm Ash, from Pallet Town! I challenge you!" said Ash
Brock then looks at Jake and Green
"And you two?" he asked
"My name is Jake. Like my friend, I also come from Pallet Town. I'm also here to challenge you to a Gym battle" said Jake
"And my name is Green. I'm from Viridian City. But I only came here to watch" replied Green
"I see. Is this your first Gym match, you two" asked Brock sternly
"You could say that" said Jake
"A gym match is different from other battles. This match is for Pokémon League authorization. There are special rules" explained Brock
"What kind of rules?" asked Green
"We will use two Pokémon each. Understood? Now, which one of you trainers will challenge me first" Brock asked
"That would be me. I will challenge you first!" answered Ash
"And how long have you been with that Pokémon?" asked Brock
"Um, about two weeks. I guess" replied Ash
"Yes, your Pikachu is in it's cutest stage. It can't win" said Brock bluntly
This caused Ash's Pikachu to nearly fall over in surprised. Green also sweat drops at the Gym Leader's blunt statement. Brock then turns his attention to Jake and his Bulbasaur
"And what about you? How long have you been with your Pokémon?" he asked Jake
"About two weeks as well, Brock. Me and my Bulbasaur had our fair shares of battles before we came here" said Jake
"Bulbasaur!" said Bulbasaur
"I see" said Brock
"Look. We'll worry about our Pokémon and you worry about yours. Alright!" yelled Ash
"Suit yourself. As Gym Leader, I have to accept every challenge. So let's just get this over with" said Brock as he snapped his fingers.
But when he did that, the lights in the gym comes on and the side door opens to reveal some rocks coming out. Realizing that the rocks are getting closer, the three trainers screamed and ran down with Pikachu and Bulbasaur following them. They ran right into the challenger box as the rock connected. Brock then jumps to the Gym Leader box and takes out a Poké Ball.
"Let the match begin!" he said
Jake, Bulbasaur, and Green backs up a bit so Ash can begin his match
"Go get him, buddy" said Jake
"Be careful" added Green
"Thanks. Alright Pikachu, I choose you, buddy" Ash said
"Pikachu" said his Pikachu as he runs onto the field
"Onix, go!" said Brock as he throws his Poké Ball. It opens and lets out a giant rock snake Pokémon who roars when it came on the battlefield
"Whoa! Onix" said Jake in surprise
"Bulbasaur!" said Bulbasaur
"That thing is huge!" yelled Green with her eyes widens
Jake takes out his Pokédex and scans Onix
Jake's Pokédex: Onix, the Rock Snake Pokémon. As it grows, the stone portions of its body harden to become similar to a diamond, but colored black.
"I'm guessing that's Brock's Ace Pokémon" said Jake
Seeing how tall his opponent is, Pikachu becomes scared and ran back towards Ash. He then attempts to open one of Ash's other Poké Balls to battle in his place. But Ash grabs him.
"Hey this is your battle, Pikachu. Not Pidgeotto's! Go!" said Ash as he pushes Pikachu back into battle. Green shakes her head a little at what she is seeing. Pikachu tries to pluck up some courage and got ready to fight Onix despite being scared.
"Onix, Tackle attack!" ordered Brock
Onix begins to charge at Pikachu. Pikachu shrieks and got out of the way as the attack misses. This caused both Jake, Green, and Bulbasaur to wince at this. Pikachu then kept running, until Onix catches him in it's tail.
"Onix, Bind it now!" ordered Brock
Onix did as it's trainer commanded and begins to crush Pikachu, making it hard for him to breathe. Jake and Green gasp at this
"Pikachu, Thundershock!" said Ash
Pikachu attempts to use Thundershock to zap Onix, but Onix is unaffected by it
"It's no good. Electric Type attacks don't work on Rock Type Pokémon." said Jake
"Poor Pikachu" said Green in worry
"Bulbasaur" Bulbasaur also said in worry
"You haven't raised it very well. Such a weak electric attack can't hurt Onix" said Brock as his Onix continues to squeeze Pikachu
"Pikachu, return!" said Ash as he attempts to return Pikachu to his Poké Ball. But the red beams are being blocked by Onix's rock body.
"It's being blocked. I can't bring it back" he said
Onix begins to squeeze Pikachu even harder. It feels like Pikachu is on his last breath. Green covers her eyes, not wanting to watch this any longer. Jake and Bulbasaur both watched this in horror.
"Ash, do something! Pikachu looks like he's gonna suffocate!" he shouted to his friend
Ash gritted his teeth as he watched this.
"CUT IT OUT!" he yelled
"Do you surrender?" Brock called out
"I. I do" Ash replied
The bell clangs signaling Ash's forfeti and Brock's victory. Ash picks up his Pikachu and walks out the door. Just as Jake, Green, and Bulbasaur were about to follow their friend. But Brock calls to Jake
"Hey you. Shall we start our match now?" the gym leader asked
"I need to support my friend, Brock. We shall have our match tonight." Jake said to Brock
"Very well. Tonight it is" said Brock
Jake nods his head and walks out with Green and Bulbasaur following after. Ash was carrying Pikachu with Jake and Green walking on both sides with him
"How's Pikachu?" asked Green in worry
"He's not looking too good." said Ash. "I really messed up back there"
"To put it simply, you were at a type disadvantage when you pit Pikachu against Brock's Onix. You should've known that Electric type attacks like Thundershock doesn't affect Onix in the slightest. And I'll bet your other Pokémon wouldn't fair against Brock's Pokémon either." explained Jake
Green nods her head sadly
"I guess you're right, Jake. But what am I gonna do?" asked Ash
The three trainers stop to see Flint in front of them
"Flint?" puzzled Green
"Come with me, you three" said Flint as he wants them to follow him.
The three trainers look at each other and then follows after Flint. At a cabin, Ash, Jake, Green, and Bulbasaur were watching Pikachu lying on a small bed that Flint made for it
"Get well soon, Pikachu" said Green
Flint then notices Bulbsasaur looking well
"Excuse me, young man. But did you challenge Brock yet?" he asked Jake
"Not yet, Flint. We both agreed to a match tonight. Though Ash lost his gym match very badly" said Jake
"Bulbasaur" Bulbasaur said sadly
"Everyone loses sometimes. You can't let that get you down" Flint told Ash
"I know. But I didn't just lose, I stunk" said Ash glumly
"Oh, Ash" said Green as she feels bad for him
"Brock's way better than me. I could never enter a League Match if I can't beat him!" yelled Ash
Jake puts a hand on Ash's shoulder to comfort him while his Bulbasaur nuzzles him
"Brock is very good. His own talents can take him much further than simply being a local gym leader" said Flint
"If he is so strong, than why doesn't he enter the Regional Championship himself?" asked Jake
"He has his reasons" answered Flint
This leaves Ash, Jake, and Green confused.
"Here, I'll show you" said Flint
Flint lead the three trainers outside the cabin and back to the gym. They went to the house behind the Gym. They snuck to the back porch and hid behind some bushes. They see about 10 kids playing while a familiar person is washing the dishes. It was Brock, the Gym leader. Then a little girl runs up to him
"I tore my skirt!" she whined
"Alright, alright. I'll sew it up for you" said Brock
"Wow, that's a lot of kids" said Jake
"It makes me lucky I'm an only child" added Green
Brock begins to sew up the skirt
"Is it done yet?" asked the girl impatiently
"Just a minute" answered Brock
'I guess Brock has a heart after all' thought Jake with a smile
The three trainers and Flint were walking through the city at night.
"Wow, I sure never thought of Brock like that" said Ash
"Me too" said Jake
"Me three" added Green
"Brock has ten little brothers and sisters to take care of. So he could never leave town for the Regional Championships" said Flint
"Doesn't Brock have any parents?" asked Green
"His good for nothing father left the family to become a Pokémon trainer. They never heard from him again. Brock's heartbroken mother tried her best to hold things together, but sadly left as well. Brock's the only one his little brothers and sisters have left" answered Flint
'That is horrible. I sure am lucky my parents are not like that' thought Jake with a frown
"I better not listen to anymore sad stuff. Next time I have a match with Brock, I might not have the heart to beat him" said Ash which surprises Flint
"But you said that... you said you could never win a match with Brock" said Flint in bewilderment
"Yeah well I changed my mind about that! If I can power up Pikachu, I'll beat him!" said Ash with determination
Jake smiled at Ash's spirit returning. Green also smiled as well
"Hmmm. I may just know a way you can supercharge Pikachu" said Flint
"Hey! You do?!" said Ash excitedly
"I do" responded Flint. He then turns to Jake
"As for you, kid. I believe you owe Brock a gym match tonight. You might want to get to that" he said
"Sure thing, Flint" Jake said
'I just hope that I'll be able to beat Brock. Otherwise, I'll end up beaten just like Ash' thought Jake worry
