Electric Shock Showdown, Part 2
When we last saw our heroes, they had finally arrived at Vermillion City. But they first head to the Pokémon Center due to Pikachu and Bulbasaur being exhausted and hungry. While there, they witnessed a bunch of trainers rushing in with their Pokémon brutally injured. They soon learn that the Gym Leader was responsible for it. The gang then head to the Vermillion Gym where Ash first challenged him. Ash and Lt. Surge fought using Raichu and Pikachu. Unfortunately for Ash, his Pikachu was easily beaten by Raichu causing him to lose the match. While Ash, Brock, and Misty takes Pikachu to the Pokémon Center, it is Jake's turn to take on Lt. Surge.
Jake and Lt. Surge were now facing off against each other on the battlefield. Green was standing behind Jake to watch.
"How fitting. I get to beat another victim of my gym. It'll be like hitting two birds with one stone" Lt. Surge said
"Yeah. Except this bird will be fighting back" Jake said
"Bulbasaur" Bulbasaur said
"The Pokémon Gym match will now begin! The Gym Leader, Lt. Surge against the challenger, Jake Serling. The same rules will apply. One Pokémon each with no time limit. Send out your Pokémon!" The man said
"Raichu, go!" Lt. Surge said
"Rai rai!" Raichu said as it went on the battlefield
"Alright, baby. Are you going to send in your puny Bulbasaur?" Lt. Surge asked
Bulbasaur just glared at what he said
"That was my plan at first, Surge. But I got someone else in mind." Jake said as he takes out a Poké Ball. "Sandshrew, I choose you!"
He throws his Poké Ball and Sandshrew appears. Jake looks at Bulbasaur who nods with approval
"Sandshrew Sand!"
"A Ground type Pokémon, eh? I commend you for using a Pokémon with a type advantage, but that's still not enough to beat me!" Lt. Surge said
"I guess we'll have to see now won't we" Jake replied
'Be careful, Jake!' thought Green
"Ready for your first battle, Sandshrew?" Jake asked
"Shrew shrew" Sandshrew replied with a nod
"Will you allow me to check my Sandshrew's moves first?" he asked the gym leader
"Alright, but make it snappy!" barked Lt. Surge
Jake takes out his Pokédex and scans his Sandshrew
Jake's Pokédex: Sandshrew's known moves are: Slash, Dig, Defense Curl, and Sand Attack"
"Let the match begin!" the mans said and the bell rang
"One move, Raichu, Thundershock attack!" Lt. Surge ordered
Raichu unleashed a Thundershock attack at Sandshrew
"Sandshrew quick, use Defense Curl!" Jake ordered
Sandshrew curls up into a ball to raise it's defense. The Thundershock hits Sandshrew but it didn't affect it.
Lt. Surge and Raichu gasped at this
"Okay, Sandshrew use Slash attack"
Sandshrew uncurls. It runs in and slashes Raichu on the face
"He got him" Green said
"Saur" Bulbasaur said
"Oh yeah?! Raichu, Mega Punch!" Lt. Surge said
Raichu charges his fist and runs over to Sandshrew
"Dig, Sandshrew!" Jake said
Sandshrew dug underground causing Raichu's Mega Punch to miss
"Huh?" puzzled Lt. Surge
"Rai?" Raichu said as he looked around the battlefield.
Just then, Sandshrew emerged from behind Raichu and attacked him which causes major damage to it
"Shrew" Sandshrew said
"Raichu! Don't let that runt beat you! Use your another Mega Punch!" Surge ordered
"Counter with Slash, Sandshrew!" Jake ordered
Raichu and Sandshrew rushes at each other with their respective attacks. They both swung their attacks at each other which knocks them back.
"Raichu, Thunderbolt attack!" Lt. Surge ordered
Raichu unleashes Thunderbolt
"Quick Sandshrew, dig underground!" Jake quickly said
Sandshrew quickly dug underground before the attack hits it
"Again!? This isn't fun anymore!" shouted Lt. Surge irritation
"Deal with it, Surge. Let er rip Sandshrew!" Jake ordered
Sandshrew jumped out of the ground which surprises Raichu. Sandshrew then hits Raichu which deals more damage to it.
'Impossible! How can a baby Pokémon like that Sandshrew get the best of my Raichu!?" thought Lt. Surge angrily
'Wow. Despite it being it's first time battling, Sandshrew is really pulling it off.' thought Green with a smile
Bulbasaur smiled proudly at Sandshrew
"Alright! I'm through playing around! Raichu, another Thundershock attack. Don't stop until you hit it!" commanded Lt. Surge
"Dodge them all Sandshrew! While your doing that, get in close and Slash Raichu!" commanded Jake
Sandshrew dodges the attack, but Raichu kept firing Thundershock at it's opponent. Luckily, Sandshrew curls into a ball and dodges all the attacks. It uncurls and got it's claws out. But as it does that, Lt. Surge had other plans
"Raichu, give it a Mega Kick!" Lt. Surge said
Raichu gave Sandshrew a Mega Kick which sends it flying back. Jake, Green, and Bulbasaur gasped at this. Sandshrew skids on the ground until it it lies in front of Jake
"Sandshrew!" Jake cried
"Saur!" Bulbasaur cried
"Oh no!" Green said
"Heh heh. So baby, you really thought that you can prove me wrong by sending that toy out to battle my Raichu? I guess all that talk about bonding with your Pokémon didn't mean a thing here!" taunted Lt. Surge while Raichu smirked
Jake gritted his teeth as the gym leader continues to insult him
"Don't you see? A Pokémon's power is useful once they evolve. Any other Pokémon who don't evolve are just babies. Just like your Sandshrew! And just like your friend's Pikachu! So why don't just you just give up now and I'll spare you the humiliation of being badly beaten by me." the gym leader taunted
"NEVER!" screamed Jake which surprises him and Raichu. Even Green and Bulbasaur were shocked at his outburst
"How dare you speak so lowly of my Sandshrew and my friend's Pikachu! You know what you're problem is, Surge? You're always underestimating your opponents and treating them like punching bags! And you think this is some kind of game to you?! You're too blinded by your own arrogance to see that a Pokémon's true power comes from the bond they share with their trainers!" Jake shouted
"You tell him, Jake" Green said quietly
"Saur" Bulbasaur said impressed
Lt. Surge and Raichu were still shocked as Jake called them out
"And besides, this battle isn't over yet! So, don't count us out! Sanshrew, get up! I know this is your first battle, but we can't lose here! Please, we have to finish this! Don't give up!" Jake called to his Sandshrew
"Saur saur!" Bulbasaur called
Sandshrew heard them. And slowly got up. As it got on it's feet, Sandshrew glared at Raichu much to it's surprise. Jake, Green, and Bulbasaur both smile at this.
"It's got guts, I'll give it that. But I'm still going to take it down! Raichu, move in with Mega Punch!" Lt. Surge ordered
"Rai!" Raichu said as it charges at Sandshrew with Mega Punch
"Sandshrew, follow my lead. Use Sand Attack to cover the field! Don't stop until I say so" Jake ordered
"Shrew?" Sandshrew questioned
"Trust me. I got a plan" Jake assured
Sandshrew did what Jake said as it use Sand Attack on the ground which kicks up a cloud of dust which covers the entire area. This caused Raichu to stop
"Rai?" Raichu asked in confusion
"What is this?" Lt. Surge asked
"That's called strategy, Surge. Okay Sandshrew, stop!" Jake ordered
Sandshrew stopws kicking up sand. Raichu then looked around the field, but because of the dust, it could barely see
"With so much dust on the field, Raichu can barely see anything. This is Jake's chance to strike" Green said
"Okay Sandshrew, Dig! Attack from the holes!" Jake commanded
Sandshrew digs underground. As Raichu searches for it's opponent, Sandshrew attacks Raichu from behind and went back in the hole. Raichu turns to where it was attacked. Sandshrew appeared out from out of another part of the field and slashed Raichu while popping back underground. No matter where Raichu tried to look, Sandshrew ambushed it from underground in another part of the field. Lt. Surge was getting frustrated by this.
'It's working! With Sandshrew obscured in the dust, it's able to take Raichu out without being seen.' thought Jake with a smirk
Bulbasaur smiled at Sandshrew. It was very impressed by it's trainer's strategy
"You're doing good Jake! Keep it up!" cheered Green
"Arrgh! Raichu, pull yourself together!" Lt. Surge yelled
By now, Raichu was starting to get exhausted. The dust then disappears. Sandshrew then appears on the farther part of the field.
"There it is, Raichu! Get it with Mega Punch!" Lt. Surge ordered
Raichu begins to run at Sandshrew with it's fist charged, but couldn't run any faster
"Hey is it just me, or is Raichu running slow" Green said as she looked at Raichu
"It is. Maybe I can use that to my advantage." Jake said. "Sandshrew form into a ball and charge at Raichu. Then use Slash. Make sure you don't get hit this time!"
Sanshrew did as it's trainer asked. Sandshrew forms into a ball and charges at Raichu.
"What the ?" Lt. Surge said in confusion
Sanshrew then uncurls in front of Raichu. Raichu attempts to punch Sandshrew, but it jumps and Slashes Raichu in the face. Raichu yelled in pain
Lt. Surge was getting angry
"Stop standing around, Raichu and use Thunderbolt!" he commanded
"Quick Sandshrew, use Sand Attack!"
Just as Raichu was about to use Thunderbolt, Sandshrew used Sand Attack to throw sand into Raichu's eyes which blinds it. Lt. Surge gasped at this
"Now for the finisher! Sandshrew, one more Dig!" Jake ordered
Sandshrew then dug underground. As Raichu was still trying to get the sand out of it's eyes, Sandshrew attacked Raichu from underneath it which sends it flying in the air.
"Raichu!" shouted Lt. Surge
Raichu hits the ground and after rolling a bit, lied on it's back with swirls in it's eyes. Sandshrew lands on the ground. The man and woman were shocked by Raichu's defeat.
"R-Raichu is unable to battle to battle, Sandshrew wins. The match goes to Jake Serling the challenger!" the man said in disbelief
"We did it. We won, Sandshrew!" Jake said
Sandshrew smiled and leaps into Jake's arms
"Shrew shrew" it said happily
"Heh. Not bad for your first battle" Jake said
"Saur saur!" Bulbasaur said as it congratulated it
"Jake!" shouted Green as she rushed over and hugged Jake from the back. This surprises him
"Green" he said
"I was so worried. I thought for sure that Sandshrew would be beaten" she said with tears in her eyes
"Hey hey. It's okay, Green. We won. And that's all that matters" Jake assured
Lt. Surge fell to his knees still shocked by his loss.
"Raichu, return" he said as he returns Raichu to it's Poké Ball
The gym leader got up and walks over to them.
"Tell me, kid. How did you do it?" Lt. Surge asked
"It's like I told you, Surge. Pokémon can get stronger whether they evolve or not. And a Pokémon can make the decision of whether to evolve or stay the way they are. What really matters to both a trainer and their Pokémon is the bond they share" explained Jake
Green nods her head in agreement as well as Bulbasaur
"And you have certainly proven that to me. As proof of your victory, I award you the Thunder Badge!" Lt. Surge said as he took out the Thunder Badge and hands it to Jake
"Thanks, Lt. Surge." Jake said as he takes it. "Alright, I got my third badge!"
"Bulbasaur!"
"Sandshrew!"
"Congratulations, Jake!" Green said
"Thanks everyone!" Jake said gratefully. He then turns to Lt. Surge. "Oh, one more thing. you best be prepared for your next loss, because my friend might come back to beat you this time"
"I seriously doubt that, kid. But I'll keep that in mind" Lt. Surge said
"Come on. Let's go back to the Pokémon Center and meet up with the others" Green said
"Right" Jake said
They left the Vermillion Gym and made their way to the Pokémon Center. While inside, Jake left his Pokémon to be healed by Nurse Joy while he and Green met Ash, Misty, and Brock in a room where they were watching Pikachu was on a bed while wrapped in bandages.
"Hey guys" Jake said
"Hi Jake. Hi Green" Ash said
"I take it you beat, Lt. Surge" Brock guessed
"Uh huh" Jake replied as he showed them the Thunder badge
"Wow. You must've fought very hard in there" Misty said
"He sure did, Misty" Green said
"How's Pikachu, Ash?" Jake asked
"I don't know. That Raichu really did a number on him" Ash said
Just then, Pikachu slowly opened his eyes
"Pikachu, I'm glad you're okay" Ash said with relief
"Thank goodness" Green said
Pikachu turns his head away as he was still upset by his loss against Surge's Raichu
"Pikachu got hurt pretty badly" Brock informed
"I can see that" Ash said
"No no. I mean his spirit" Brock corrected
"What do you mean?" Ash asked
"Pikachu was totally overpowered by that Raichu" Brock explained
"No wonder he's so upset" Jake said
"They're right, Ash" Misty said sadly
"We'll try harder! We'll win next time if Pikachu tries harder" Ash said in determination
"But will it be enough?" Jake asked
"Yeah, I'm sure Pikachu tried it's best the last time" Misty added
"There is one way you might win" Nurse Joy called
The group turn to see Nurse Joy at the doorway
"Nurse Joy?" Green asked
"I'm sorry. I overheard your conversation, and I just thought that..." Nurse Joy said
"How can we win?!" Ash demanded as he interrupted her
"A while ago, I happen to come across this" Nurse Joy said as she reveals a small box. She opens it to reveal a green stone with a lightning symbol on it
"Wow. It's a Thunder Stone" Brock said
"A Thunder Stone?" Ash asked
"I've read about it. It's suppose to evolve some Electric type Pokémon" Green said
"You can evolve your Pikachu into a Raichu, Ash" Brock added
"I can use it to evolve Pikachu into a Raichu? Then Pikachu might be strong enough to win" Ash said
"You've got to think hard before using the Thunder Stone" Nurse Joy told him
"Huh?" Ash asked
"If you make Pikachu evolve, Ash. You can't change it back" Misty pointed out
"Pikachu will never be the same" Brock added
"They're right, Ash. Do you think this is what's best for Pikachu? Remember, a Pokémon can choose to get stronger with or without evolution. They can decide whether they want to evolve or not. Think carefully now" Jake said to his best friend
Ash thought very hard on this.
"If Pikachu becomes a Raichu, I might be able to win that badge. On the other hand, to make it evolve just to fight. I would be just like Surge." Ash said as he debated whether to evolve his Pikachu or not.
Ash then turns to Pikachu
"Pikachu, what do you want to do?" he asked as he held the Thunder Stone in front of Pikachu. "I really want to beat that Surge, but I also don't want to force you to evolve if you are happy staying the way you are now."
Everyone watches as Pikachu begins to think. He then slowly gets up to look at the Thunder Stone
"Pikachu" Ash said in surprised
"Easy now" Green said
"Save your strength" Misty added
Pikachu then gives a determined look and smacks the Thunder Stone out of Ash's hand much to his surprise
"Pikachu" Ash said in surprised
Pikachu then begins to explain his reason to Ash
"What is Pikachu saying?" Green asked
"I think Pikachu made his decision. He doesn't want to evolve to beat Lt. Surge's Raichu. Pikachu wants to beat Raichu just as he is" Jake said with a smile
"Really? Pikachu, is that true?" Ash asked
Pikachu nods his head. Ash smiled and grabbed his Pikachu's hand
"Pikachu! Together, you and I will beat Lt. Surge and his Raichu!" Ash said with a determined look
"Pika pika!" Pikachu said in confirmation
"You're both crazy!" yelled Misty
"You should change your strategy, Ash. Maybe use your other Pokémon" Brock added
"Lay off them, you two. Once Ash makes his decision, there's no changing his mind" Jake said
"Jake is right! It's hard, but it's not impossible! Pikachu and I will find a way to win!" Ash told the two former gym leaders
"Pika Pikachu Pika!" yelled Pikachu
Green couldn't help but smile at this
"Alright! Are you all charged up!?" Ash asked
"Pika" Pikachu said until he got tired and fell on the bed
"Huh" Ash puzzled
"It hasn't fully recovered it's stamina. You should let it rest a little while longer" Nurse Joy said
"Pikachu" Ash said as he looks at his sleeping Pikachu
"Don't worry, Ash. Just let Pikachu rest for a bit. Okay?" Green said
"You're right, Green." Ash said with a smile
The group was outside the room waiting for Pikachu to be rested up. Misty was getting a soda from a vending machine
"Oh, this whole thing has me so nervous" Misty said
"Really? Since when did you decide to worry about me?" Ash asked
"Not you. I'm concerned about Pikachu. I hope it'll be okay" Misty corrected
"Me too" Green added
"Hey Ash" Brock said
"Yeah?" Ash asked
During the fight, Surge said that he evolved his Raichu as soon as he got it. Didn't he?" Brock asked
"Yeah" Ash answered
"Then perhaps there is a way" Brock said with a smile
Jake smiled as he recalled his battle with Lt. Surge. He remembered when the Gym Leader's Raichu was running very slow when it tries to get at his Sandshrew
Just then, a sound went off
"Oh, that reminds me. I need to get my Pokémon. Be right back" Jake said as he rushes off. His friends watches him as he does that
The next morning, Pikachu has fully recovered. It was now time for Ash and Pikachu's rematch against Lt Surge. Ash, Jake, along with Bulbasaur and Pikachu steps out of the Pokémon Center.
"Pikachu, our Lucy Star is shining today!" Ash said as he pointed to the sun much to Bulbasaur and Pikachu's confusion
"Where? I don't see it. How can you see a star in the middle of the day?" asked Misty confusion
"It was a figure of speech, Misty" Jake pointed out
"Yeah. I don't mean it's actually shining" Ash pointed out. "Let's go Pikachu"
Ash and Pikachu both set off to the Gym. Green and Brock then step out
"Seems like they're ready to win. Doesn't it?" asked Brock
"You got that right, Brock. Let's catch up to them" Jake said as he and Bulbasaur walks after their friend
"Wait for us" Green said as she, Misty, and Brock follow after them.
The gang walked through Vermillion, until three familiar people wearing black coats, shades, and hats. They were even holding a flag
"Uh, who are you guys?" Ash said in surprise
"Prepare for trouble! Make it double! To protect the world from devastation!" the man and woman said until the small person hit them on the heads with his fan.
"Ix-nay!" he scolded
"We forgot!" the man and woman yelled
'Really? Those guys again?' thought Jake as instantly knew who they were. Bulbasaur shook his head at the trio's disguise. The rest of the group looked at them in surprise.
"We're the challengers' cheerleaders and we're here to show our support for the brave Pikachu and Ash" Meowth said
"Ra!" Jessia and James said
"In honor of the great Pikachu's bravery, we wish to offer a cheer" Meowth said
The disguised trio then begins to make their cheer for Ash's Pikachu as they encourage him to win. The group watches them in surprise. Jake, Green, and Bulbasaur look at each other in confusion.
"Hip hip horray!" said Meowth as they finished their cheer. "Okay, let's split"
The trio then begins to hightail it
"That was really disturbing" Brock said
"Not to mention, strange" Green added
"Thanks for your support! Bye Team Rocket!" Misty called out which catches the trio off guard as their hats and shades came off
"How did they know it was us?" asked Meowth
"Lucky guess" Jessie answered as they continue running.
"They may be our enemies, but they can sure act weird" Jake said with a sweat drop
"Saur saur saur" Bulbasaur said with a sweat drop
Ash smiled at Team Rocket's support and then gains a determined look
The gang then makes it back to the Vermillion Gym. Ash and his Pikachu were facing off against Lt. Surge and his Raichu. The rest of their friends were in the back to spectate.
"Hey baby! You ready to take another beatin?" taunted Lt. Surge. "You didn't even make your Pikachu evolved. You didn't learn anything yet"
"Don't be so sure, Surge!" Ash yelled
"Okay. We'll let's see." Lt. Surge said
"The challenger Ash using a Pikachu. The Gym Leader, Lt. Surge, using a Raichu. The Pokémon will battle one on one with no time limit. Let the battle begin!" the man called out as the bell rang
'You can do this, Ash! Put Lt. Surge in his place' thought Jake
"Use the strategy we planned, Pikachu! You can do it!" Ash yelled
Pikachu leaps in
"A strategy. So they're planning a new way to lose. Go Raichu!" Lt. Surge commanded
Raichu comes in. Just as Pikachu leaps up, Raichu swings it's tail and hits him much to Ash's shock. Pikachu skids across the ground following this. Just as Pikachu was recovering from it, Raichu begins to assault him with it's tail.
"Pikachu!" Ash yelled
"Hang in there, Pikachu!" Misty said
"Stay strong!" Green added
"Don't give in!" Jake called out
"Bulbasaur!" Bulbasaur called out
"Roll to the side! Break away!" Brock said
"Do it Raichu! Give it the Body Slam!" Lt. Surge ordered
Raichu towers over Pikachu and Body Slams him. The mouse Pokémon cries out, making everyone gasp in shock
"Finish it off Raichu! Another Body Slam!" Lt. Surge commanded
Raichu leaps up and prepares to Body Slam Pikachu again. The gang looked on in horror
"Pikachu!" they yelled
"Watch out!" Ash warned
Pikachu heard Ash and leaps out of the way which Raichu missed
"Say what!?" Lt. Surge said in surprise
"Aw yeah!" Jake yelled
"Do it, Pikachu! Agility now!" Ash commanded
Pikachu used Agility and begins to run very fast
"Raichu, use you Body Slam!" Lt. Surge ordered
Raichu attempts to body slam Pikachu, but because Pikachu was moving so fast, that Raichu missed him several times
"Raichu!" Lt. Surge said in surprised
"It's working, Just like Brock said" Misty said
"Right! Raichu evolved too fast and it never learned the speed attacks it can used in the Pikachu state" Brock explained
"That's what Surge gets for forcing his Pokémon to evolve" Jake said with a smirk
"Saur" Bulbasaur said
"You go, Pikachu!" Green called out
"Okay. Use all the Agility you've got!" Ash called out
Pikachu speeds in much to Raichu's surprise. Pikachu then runs around Raichu, making it dizzy
"Whoa! Raichu's dizzy" Jake said
"You Raichu's way too slow, Surge. That's it's weakness" Ash said to the Vermillion Gym Leader
"Okay, Raichu. Give it a Thunderbolt! Shut it down!" Lt. Surge commanded
Raichu unleashes a massive Thunderbolt attack. It tears through the field and breaks all the windows too. After that attack, Lt. Surge smiled as he believed he had won
"Heh. The end of the match. Huh?" he said as he saw Ash's Pikachu still okay and standing on his tail. "What?"
"Pikachu!" Ash said
"He's okay!" Jake yelled
"Saur!" Bulbasaur said
"Thank goodness!" Green said in relief
"Alright. Way to go!" Brock yelled. "It used it's tail as a ground and dodged the Electric shocks"
"Now that's a good use for the tail. Eh, buddy?" Jake asked
"You can say that again" Ash said
Pikachu then got off his tail. Raichu was panting
"Raichu, give it another Thunderbolt!" Lt. Surge ordered
Raichu attempted to unleash another Thunderbolt, but it couldn't. Raichu tried again, but it still couldn't do it. Much to it and Surge's confusion
"Do something" Lt. Surge said
"Sorry, Surge. It looks like your Raichu is all out of juice" Jake called out
"Alright! Quick Attack!" Ash ordered
Pikachu rushes at Raichu with Quick Attack
"Raichu, Take Down now!" Lt. Surge ordered
Just Raichu was doing that, Pikachu tackled it right in the torso. Then while charging with electricity, Pikachu hits Raichu with his tail, knocking it down and defeating it.
"Unbelievable!" Lt. Surge shouted in surprised
"We did it, Pikachu!" Ash said
"Good job, Ash!" Jake said as he gives his friend a thumbs up
"Saur!" Bulbasaur shouted
"Congratulations!" Green said
"Way to go!" Brock congratulated
"Fantastic!" Misty said
"Pikachu" Pikachu said in victory
Ash and Lt. Surge then shook hands
"Nice job, Ash. Pikachu. As proof of your victory: A Thunder Badge" Lt. Surge said as he gives them the Thunder Badge.
"Thank you" Ash said as he accepts it. "Would you look at that. It really is the Thunder Badge"
"You should be proud. You and your Pikachu really were good together" Lt. Surge said
"Thanks! Thunder Badge! And it's all mine!" Ash yelled in victory
"Pi Pikachu!" Pikachu yelled
Soon, everyone begins to applaud Ash
"Nice victory, Ash. You are no baby. And that goes for you too, Jake" Lt. Surge said
"Thanks, Surge" Jake said
"Saur saur!" Bulbasaur as it used it's vinese to applaud
"Congratulations, Ash. Pikachu" Brock said
"You finally got your badge" Misty added
"And you used your skills too" added Green
"Rai Rai" Raichu said as it congratulated Pikachu for his victory
Pikachu blushed as he rubbed his head. Ash then grabs Pikachu
"Thank you, Pikachu! This was your victory" Ash said as he hugged him
Pikachu then shocked Ash as they hugged
