Darkest Temptations
Chapter Twenty One: Turning the Clock
Damon Salvatore
Stefan remained ever more hopeful about us finding Elena and Caroline, but I could see it was beginning to take its toll on him. It was getting to the point where I couldn't be around him and needed distance. He didn't agree with my methods of tracking them down; he believed the so-called darkness within me couldn't be trusted when it came to Elena and my feelings for her. Everyone around Stefan was so determined on comforting him to the point where they couldn't see anything but his suffering. While I was drowning in my own misery, exhaustion, and agony with every passing moment, she was gone.
I knew immediately that something bad happened to her; no one liked to believe it, but I knew Elena better than most; I had seen her at her best and at her worst, and I knew that girl in my marrow. There was no chance in hell that she would leave Mystic Falls; whatever had taken her had dragged her beyond our reach.
She had been gone for so long that missing her was taking its own toll on me. No one cared that I was in love with her, not that it even mattered; I didn't need their pity or their help in finding her.
If anyone was going to bring her back, it was going to be me. I didn't care what I had to do; I was willing to do absolutely anything to see her again. Even if it meant turning back time 's what brought Tyler and I to Las Vegas; the hunter had a contact there who had the ability to do such a thing, but it would only work for a price. Despite Tyler's determination to bring back Caroline, he didn't have the stomach to do what needed to be done that night in Vegas.
The hunter's contact demanded a great sacrifice in order to cast the spell and bring us all back to the precise day that Elena and Caroline went missing. Since Tyler couldn't get the job done, it was on my shoulders to carry out all the messy work. The hunter's contact warned us that if our people were still alive, then the spell to send us back in time would work. However, there was a possibility that Elena and Caroline wouldn't remember being taken. They would have had to have remembered a significant part of their recent days, their last moments, in order to keep their memories intact.
I doubted they'd want to remember these last few months with us apart. Whoever had taken them from us clearly had abilities to keep them hidden from us. Which meant when I got Elena back I was going to grantee that nothing and no one ever came near her again.
She knew how I felt about her, but I planned to tell her regardless. I wanted her to know she could choose me. Even if it cost me my relationship with Stefan, I needed her to make her choice. I needed to know if she felt the same way for me as I did for her and if there was a chance for us.
I decided not to tell Stefan or the others about the spell. Tyler wanted to forget what I had done in Vegas in order to have the spell cast. I wasn't ashamed of my actions; they wouldn't keep me up at night or stop me from the happiness seeing Elena again would bring to me. The only thing standing between me and Elena now was my brother, and as much as it would kill me to lose him, I'd met Elena first; I'd loved her before I even knew her name, and that's what I focused on that night in Vegas.
Due to the fact that Tyler and I had given our blood as part of the spell, only he and I would know the reality when the time shift happened. While my brother, Bonnie, and Elena's friends wouldn't recall her and Caroline going missing, Tyler and I were going to remember everything. Secretly, I hoped Elena wouldn't remember her abduction; whatever was happening to her right now, I hoped when the spell worked that she would have a blank slate afterwards.
I couldn't begin to imagine what she was going through right now.
Elena Mikaelson
I parted my lips, and Klaus's tongue immediately found mine, and all I felt was the fire that surged between us. We were standing in Newton Airport outside in the arrivals exit. Every five seconds, a car drove by us, coming and going. To the outside world, we just appeared like newlyweds, which was exactly what we were.
This was the first time since the vacation that Klaus and I were even able to share a moment together in public. Since we returned, he had taken Caroline out on a date in town to keep up the image that there was only her in his life. As for me, I hadn't been out with him at all; I was his second wife, and therefore, while in Sandy, Utah, I wasn't even a part of his public life.
Here in New York, though, I could put all that aside and just be myself with him. I brought my hand up to the side of his neck, pulling him in closer. Klaus dominated our kisses, slipping his hand in my back pocket and making me smile.
We remained lip-locked for a couple of minutes until we broke apart.
"How is it that just hours apart feels like an eternity?" He sighed.
I shook my head.
"I haven't thought about Utah since we touched down."
"Good, I'm glad."
"But I know you have." I said and bit my lower lip as he pulled me closer to him.
"You've been keeping me distracted from everything since we left."
"Really?" I asked, fighting back my smile. "How so?"
"I might make you blush, Mrs. Mikaelson." He smirked.
I felt my body relax, the stress of the last few weeks melting away the longer I stared into his eyes.
"Do you think less of me because... of what happened on the airplane?" I whispered.
Klaus blinks and then shook his head.
"Not at all; why would I?"
"I just didn't expect it to happen, and I don't want you to think that I did all that to get back at you for Caroline." I paused and held his gaze. "You two are sleeping together, and I know that's my business, but I just didn't want you to think I was trying to advance our relationship."
He reached out and tucked some hair behind my ear.
"I never thought you were trying to use sex as a weapon."
I looked down for a moment. "Has anything happened between you and April?"
Klaus looked away briefly, and I knew it had. I thought maybe there was something starting to develop between them, but I had no idea it was something that would make the great and powerful Klaus Mikaelson keep his mouth shut about it.
I hadn't adjusted yet to the idea of this polygamist lifestyle, but my jealousy was for sure a sign that the life ahead of me wasn't going to be easy. But at the same time, my jealousy was a sign that my feelings for Klaus were indeed genuine and growing.
I never imagined in a million years that I would ever feel something for him. I never even saw him as the type to ever get married or have children, but with everything I had seen and experienced the past few months, it was a new world to me. A world where love was something to be fought for and treasured.
It was as if my life back in Mystic Falls had been this endless rollercoaster of death, drama, and my first love, but nothing beyond that. Sure, there were plenty of times where I was happy and very content with my life, but since leaving Mystic Falls, I have never felt so alive and so appreciated.
"Forget I asked," I told him.
Klaus leaned down and kissed my cheek, causing me to exhale deeply and look up into his eyes.
"If it's okay," I sighed, hearing the question in my head and hating myself for asking it before I even did. "Can we keep what happened before between us? It's just that—I'm not ready for anyone else to know. Not yet."
"Of course," he nodded. "It goes without saying."
I bit my lower lip. "How about a picture?"
"A picture?" He repeated.
"Never mind." I smiled, shaking my head.
"Hold on." Klaus said, keeping me locked against his stomach as he reached behind him.
"It was a stupid idea."
"You were right," Klaus revealed his phone and held it up for me. "We should have a picture together."
I giggled and moved in closer to him getting into the camera shot as he angled it above us and then leaned down and kissed my cheek as he captured the picture.
"Seriously?" I said with a laugh.
"You said you wanted a picture."
I locked eyes with him and looked down at his lips. "How about another one?"
Klaus glanced at his phone screen before I went up onto my tiptoes and brought my lips to his hearing the camera click.
He brought his phone down and smiled at the picture. I took a quick look and smiled as well before he locked it and put it away.
"For your private collection," I said, tucking my hair behind my ear. "Is it so wrong for me to worry about even having that picture in our collection?" I paused hearing myself refer to something as 'ours.' "Our bedroom?"
Klaus smirked "It won't always be like this, sweetheart," he whispered into my ear. "One day, when you're ready, you'll tell them that you and I are who we are." He paused to kiss my cheek. "And how we feel about one another."
I blinked and swallowed the lump in my throat. "We should probably get to the hotel."
Klaus pulled away, and I looked his way, seeing the uncertainty in his gaze as he seemed to want to look anywhere but at me.
"What's wrong?"
His jaw tightened before he answered me. "I have a few phone calls to make," he said without looking at me.
"Can't they wait till we're there?"
I asked the question before I realized I already knew the answer; he wasn't talking about a business call. He couldn't go a day without checking in on Caroline and April; as much as it pained me, it was our way of life now. Besides, if Klaus were gone for a day, I'd hoped he'd do the same for me too. When we got into a cab, Klaus tucked his arm around my shoulder and kissed me on my temple before I saw him hit his speed dial for Caroline and bring the phone to his ear.
After a few seconds, the phone was finally answered.
"Hello, love," Klaus said into the phone.
I couldn't hear Caroline's voice without using my vampire abilities, but I chose not to; I wouldn't want her listening into my phone conversation with him, and so I instead focused on Klaus's closeness to me as we sat side by side.
"Yes, everything is going well." He paused, and I could hear Caroline's voice in the background, but I fought against listening. "No, I'll be at the site for most of the day; why what's going on? Is something wrong?"
I glanced at Klaus as he turned his body away from me slightly to face the window.
"No," Klaus sighed. "I'll sort something; no, I'll take care of it."
Klaus glanced at me, and I smiled back at him, "No, I haven't spoken to her yet; yes, she's with me now."
I looked down at my lap and played with my hands, trying not to focus on their moment together.
"I have to go; I'll speak to you later."
Hearing him say he planned to call her later forced me to look his way.
"I thought you said—"
"She needed my help today with a few things; she didn't know I was going to be gone."
With that, Klaus didn't miss a beat, and I watched his phone screen as he did his speed dial once again, only this time opting for April's number.
I leaned my head against his shoulder and closed my eyes, listening to his heartbeat as he held onto me with one arm while his free hand held the phone to his ear.
"Hi," Klaus said, his voice gentle as it always was when he spoke with April. "How are you? Good. I hope you're behaving yourself today."
I smiled to myself hearing the familiarity in his tone and the softness of his words.
"Why what's wrong with it?" Klaus asked before holding the phone away from his ear and sighed before speaking to her again. "Did you put any metal down it?"
He glanced down at me before he held the phone up to his ear. "No, don't call anyone; just don't use it until I get back." He paused again and cleared his throat briefly. "No, I won't be back until probably later tonight, maybe after midnight. Is everything alright?"
Klaus's fingers began stroking my shoulder lightly as he listened to April speak.
"Darling," Klaus said before he rolled his eyes. "No, you haven't broken it; trust me, there's nothing you can do that will break it." He smirked at me when I opened my eyes to look at him. "Yes, I promise, no, I'm not mad, I'm just... " He laughed at her words, "I'll fix it when I get back; yes, I'm at the site." He lied to her.
Klaus's knee met mine, and I glanced at him, and he brought his lips down to mine, causing me to smile against his mouth.
"Yes, okay, sweetheart," Klaus pulled away from me briefly. "I'll try and speak to you later." Klaus's gaze met mine, and I began to move closer to him, but he pulled away to speak into the phone. "I know, I'll see you soon."
After another few seconds, Klaus ended the call and exhaled deeply before his lips met mine again. I kissed him back and brought my hand up to his chest as we made out. It wasn't long before I felt the urge to take this further than just kissing in the back of a cab. My body ached for his touch, his closeness.
And what else I planned to do while we were in New York.
