Author notes: Once again, special thanks to my friend, flblaziken for originally inspiring this chapter, based on the chapter, "Summer: The Beckoning" from Backstories: A Window to the Past!
After the conversation was over, the three of us: Regis, Winona and I all returned to the receptionist area of the Fortree City Gym through the elevator. I felt somewhat relieved returning to ground level; the heights were still something I could not get used to in just a short time, which made me more impressed by these Flying type Trainers striving to soar in the sky along with their Pokémon.
Winona then informed the receptionist on the temporary closure of the Fortree City Gym and instructed her about the procedure on what to do, which included stating the reason being, "personal matters" for the notice. An expected course of action, since no one from the PLA obviously wished to spread fear among the Hoenn residents.
Afterwards, she followed us out of the Fortree City Gym, before finding a suitable area to send out her Altaria, Merodī. It seemed that she intended to travel to the meeting destination, Lilycove, by flying. I expected nothing less after being more than a part of Regis' previous antics.
I did get the approval to join the meeting towards the end, under Winona's permission. I was obviously grateful for the opportunity, but knew I had to do my best to not cause any trouble to the powers-that-be for the upcoming few days. They probably already had enough on their plates as they were.
"Stay safe out there, you two!" Regis bid us farewell, "I'll keep the conversation a secret as promised, Winona."
"Very well, Regis." Winona nodded.
"You sure you don't want to come along?" I asked. Back at the battlefield area, Winona somewhat half-heartedly, did offer the suggestion to Regis to participate in the meeting, more so to not make her former mentee feel left out. However, Regis simply rejected without any hesitation.
"Yeah, I'll stay out of this." Regis replied, "It feels like I don't really have a flightful purpose to involve myself in more potential trouble. Besides, back at Mt. Chimney, that encounter with Willpower Admin Peggy made me feel like I've flown higher than I can soar, so I will take this time to do some more personal training."
He then stepped forward to give a gentle pat on my right shoulder, "I think the adults, especially Winona will be able to handle this matter just fine. Plus you, Lows… without a doubt, you're stronger than me right now, and can definitely do your part in saving your friend and helping them soar high against the villains."
"You rate me too high, Regis." I shook my head.
"That's seriously how I feel, though!" Regis chuckled, "While you're on your side-quest, I'll take this opportunity to work hard… so I can fly together alongside you the next time we meet again."
"It's a promise." I said. Regis then waved his hand at Winona and I, giving his final goodbye before heading back home.
Winona then rode on Merodī's back, ready for take off. Before leaving, she asked, "Lows, would you like to tag along and fly to Lilycove together? There should be enough space for another person, at my back."
It was definitely a good suggestion, but at first, I was hesitating a little, feeling a little embarrassed to accept such a generous offer from a highly-regarded Gym Leader like Winona.
In the end, I made the decision to just walk to Lilycove alone. I should be able to get there just in time, anyway.
"W-Winona, thanks for the offer, but-"
My Pokégear suddenly rang, interrupting me from reciting the sentences I had formulated in my head. I gave Winona a sign of apology before checking the Pokégear, which was revealed to be a call request by my mother.
I accepted the call request, as my mother's voice appeared from the Pokégear, [Lows, it's been a while! How's your journey in Hoenn so far?]
"Hi, Mom." I replied, "It's going good so far. I just got my sixth badge, and I plan to head to Lilycove City next."
[Oh, what a coincidence! Lows, I actually need to ask a favor from you. Are you too busy?]
It shouldn't take me too much time… right? "Sure, Mom. What is it?"
[Do you remember your aunt currently living in Hoenn? She has a tradition to mourn for her deceased Skitty, Whiskers in Mt. Pyre, where she places a bouquet of flowers on Whiskers' grave around this time once per year. However, she's currently away in the Sinnoh region, and felt bad that she can't mourn for Whiskers this year.]
"...Right."
I don't even remember the aunt she's talking about.
[Can you do us a favor and visit Whiskers' grave and place the bouquet of flowers there? Any kind of flower is fine.]
I felt a little timid upon hearing the request, as I previously heard too many ghost stories based around Mt. Pyre by my mischievous friends. But since my mother was sincere in her request, I did not have any other reason to refuse.
"I should be able to do it."
[Great! I'll send you the specific location of Whiskers' grave in just a moment. Thanks again, Lows!]
The call ended, and Winona took the chance to once again suggest, "No need to feel reserved to take up my suggestion, Lows. Mt. Pyre is close to Lilycove, so flying there will save you quite some time to settle your task at Mt. Pyre."
My hesitation from earlier was long gone as I replied, "...Thanks for looking after me, Winona."
"No worries." She gave me a gentle smile as she signaled me to join her. I carefully sat on Merodī's fluffy back, keeping little distance from Winona.
"Hold on tight, Lows." Winona said, as I held onto the Fortree Gym Leader's back for her Humming Pokémon to smoothly take off towards the sky, and afterwards, flew straight ahead at a gentle and comfortable pace as we headed towards Lilycove.
As I felt safe enough to lighten my grip onto Winona's back, I saw her briefly closing her eyes with a satisfied expression as she enjoyed the chilling breeze from the horizon.
She truly loved to be one with Bird Pokémon.
In just around half an hour, we had landed just outside the entrance of our destination.
Lilycove City
"Where the land ends and the sea begins."
My previous research already gave me some mental preparation about the scene I would expect to witness, due to its popular attractions like the Contest Hall, Lilycove Museum and Lilycove Department Store, the largest store in Hoenn, but I still felt slightly overwhelmed seeing the number of Trainers and tourists around the city. I assumed the daily crowd only increased after the addition of the Lilycove Gym, which was managed by Wally.
Not wanting to get lost in the crowd, I quietly followed along the elegant Fortree Gym Leader as we traveled past the crowd and entered the PokéCentre to check for available rooms. Coincidentally, we saw the Lilycove Gym Leader, Wally talking to one of the nurses working there.
After Wally finished his conversation with the nurse, he noticed Winona and I and politely greeted, "Winona, Lows! Good to see you two here. I was just telling Nurse Hinata to reserve extra rooms for any… special guests, in case they're arriving today."
We definitely knew what the "special guests" stood for. Winona smiled, "Thanks for that, Wally. Also, there's no need to beat around the bush with Lows regarding the matter, since he'll also be joining the meeting tomorrow with us."
The new information certainly piqued the Lilycove Gym Leader's interest, as Winona briefly explained the events that unfolded the past few hours. Once Winona finished talking, Wally nodded, "I understand. Anyone would care for his close friend at times like these, after all."
He then looked at me and said, "Lows, just like your sister, I can tell you're not the type of person that can be easily persuaded to turn back after making such an important decision. As such, just follow along with our plans in the next few days and always be careful, alright?"
"I'll do my best, Wally." I nodded, knowing how serious the situation was.
"Good, because your sister might kill me if anything happens to you." Wally joked before continuing the conversation with Winona, "Winona, I was also informed that Charmaine will be arriving at Lilycove later today, so I'm wondering if you would like to join us for dinner tonight."
"I'd be happy to do that." Winona smiled, "I'm always interested in catching up with Charmaine to see how she's doing with her Gym Leader work. It felt like the battle with Charmaine during her Gym Challenge was just yesterday. She had come very far."
"That's settled, then!"
After separating with the two Gym Leaders, I got myself a normal room to stay at the Lilycove PokéCentre and quickly settled in. Shortly after, I went out of the PokéCentre, not forgetting about the task at hand as it did not take me long to locate a nearby Flower Shop. For the occasion, I bought a bouquet of chrysanthemums, which symbolizes death and mourning.
Right before I headed off towards the dreadful Mt. Pyre, I saw an older woman selling fortune cookies, a snack that used to make younger me excited to read the contents of each note hidden inside the cookies. Feeling nostalgic and somewhat anxious, I bought a fortune cookie from the old lady, took out the piece of paper inside and quickly finished the tasty snack. Afterwards, I briefly checked what was written inside the note.
"_Hard times lead you to meeting someone important._"
Immediately, I related it to the current predicament and Sip, who at the time was kidnapped by Team Willpower, waiting for someone to save him out of the trouble.
...Don't worry, Sip. We'll stop Team Willpower and get you out of there really soon.
I clenched my fist, my resolve strengthened as I temporarily left the attraction-filled city for my task at Mt. Pyre.
Near the summit of Mt. Pyre, a soft yawn was heard from a mammalian Pokémon with a primarily white feline-like body with some dark blue coloration.
The female Pokémon treated Mt. Pyre was a place she resided for most of her life. One day, she stumbled across a commotion caused by some Ghost Pokémon spirits, which she bravely fended them off and protected the other resting spirits from any further trouble. Since then, she was given the name of "Guardian of the Souls".
The name was particularly forced onto her, but she did not mind too much. Not like she really cared, anyway. She just wanted to exist in peace.
Being the "Guardian of the Souls", there usually was not too much to care about. Most souls were actually friendly and mind their business most of the time… except one, but she would rather not talk about her.
She was going to take a brief afternoon nap, but the moment she closed her eyes, a weird sensation hit her.
She then foresaw another disaster striking Mt. Pyre very soon, but unlike previous instances, she was surprised when the vision showed multiple large boulders falling down from the peak of Mt. Pyre towards a young male Trainer, almost as if the rockslide attack was targeted right at him.
It did not take long for the Pokémon to make an assumption that the vision had something to do with the recent infamous trouble maker's doing, who was a mischievous soul in the form of the little girl. She stayed at Mt. Pyre for years, and slowly gained stronger powers to play tricks on visitors, sometimes even causing chaotic trouble for visitors who ignored or tried running away from her.
As the vision came to an end, the Pokémon opened her eyes.
She knew she needed to save the boy.
After some trouble navigating through the routes nearby Lilycove City, I managed to reach Mt. Pyre just fine. In some way, the place reminded me of the Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town, which also served as a burial ground for my hometown region.
Upon entering the area, the sinister vibes only increased when I realized there was barely anyone in the place, which to be fair, was reasonable. I did not think too many people would mourn for their Pokémon during this month, but this only made me more scared than I already was, recalling the horror stories told by my friends based at this dreadful place back in the day.
Well, there's no turning back now…
I rechecked the location of where Whiskers was buried through the message sent by my mother in my Pokégear, which revealed to be at the exterior section of Mt. Pyre. This meant I would probably not be leaving this place anytime soon.
Isn't that just great.
I heaved a big sigh, before carefully walking towards the stairs to the next floor to not accidentally step on any graves along my path.
After what felt like a decade, I finally left the interior section of Mt. Pyre through the exit from the 6th floor. Along the way, some occasional paranormal sounds, such as whispers through my ear and sounds of objects falling onto the ground tried deterring me from continuing further, but during these moments, I decided to turn deaf and ignored all of them. I just wanted to fulfill the mission assigned by my mother, and get the hell out of there.
Fortunately, Whiskers' grave was easy to notice just shortly after I entered the exterior section of Mt. Pyre and neared the summit of the mountain, which the tombstone had the carved text of the deceased Skitty's name along with the dates when it was caught by its owner and when it passed away, plus some extra small details.
I spent no time gently placing the bouquet of chrysanthemums beside the tombstone, before I closed my eyes and put my hands together to give a small prayer.
May you always rest in peace.
…It seemed that the task was completed.
I heaved another big sigh, this time in relief, and was more than ready to leave. However, my action was temporarily delayed as I heard crying sounds in the distance. I looked over the direction of the crying, and saw a little girl sniffling in sadness.
Forgetting about the typical plot of every horror story, I walked towards the little girl in a mix of curiosity and sympathy, wanting to ask her what was going on. However, as I got closer, I saw the sinister, creepy smile of the little girl hidden behind the tears forming non-stop in her eyes. It was enough for my sixth sense to warn me to not go any further than this. I turned back and immediately started leaving Mt. Pyre.
Suddenly, a childish female voice appeared from behind, which I assumed was from the little girl, "Big brother… My Pokémon just recently passed away, and I'm very lonely… Can you be my friend and play with me, please?"
Behind the childish tone, it would take a deaf person to not realize the insincerity in her voice, like she was trying to lure unknowing visitors to her trap. I felt my hair stand on my end, as I was stunned in place, slowly crumbling from the fear and knew I was most likely screwed.
Time felt like it was frozen at that moment, until I felt a tap on my shoulder from the back, as the little girl's voice once again appeared into my right ear, "Can~ we~ play?"
I was almost 100% certain that I did not hear any footsteps coming from behind.
Once the realization hit me, I instantly yelled out of instinct and used all my energy to run away without ever looking back.
"N-No thanks!"
The little girl looked at her prey as he slowly disappeared from her sight.
Another sinister smile crept across her face.
"Aww~ I guess I'll play a game with you on my own, then!"
It was a game he would not be able to refuse.
After making sure the little girl was not longer near me, it felt like all my energy was depleted at that moment. I then continued my escape from the exterior section of Mt. Pyre by walking at a slower pace.
However, that was when the strange things started occurring.
To start off, when my mind wandered off to the recent incident for a moment, I received an unpleasant jumpscare from a wild Shuppet, which made me hurriedly take out a Pokéball and send out whoever was inside.
It turned out to be Power, who was the worst choice for this situation as the timid Machoke whimpered in fear. I immediately apologized to the Fighting type before returning him and sent out Woody, who appeared slightly shocked at the scene, but quietly did his job to take out the wild Shuppet with no complaints.
I then said, "...It's a bit embarrassing to ask this, but can you walk with me until we're out of Mt. Pyre? It feels a bit scary to walk alone right now."
Woody just simply nodded, "Sure. I figured so."
The strange occurrence became more and more suspicious as the number of wild Ghost Pokémon attacking us seemed to have increased compared to the journey I had when I was searching for Whiskers' grave. Nevertheless, the Ghost Pokémon were all too weak compared to Woody, so it did not affect us much except for getting a few short scares.
After a bit of walking, to my relief, I finally saw the door back into the interior section of Mt. Pyre right in our sights. I quickened my pace just slightly, hoping that no more trouble came biting.
Unfortunately, my wishes were not answered, with Woody suddenly shouting, "Watch out, Lows!"
My Grovyle pushed me aside, helping me barely dodge a surprise move from another Pokémon. After a brief recovery of the shock, I had the time to eventually reveal the instigator of the attack, which was a strong looking Dusclops. Purple, cold flames were surrounding the Ghost type Pokémon as it approached me in a zombie-like movement, almost like it was possessed with the sole purpose to attack us.
I quickly thought about what to do and was about to issue my command to Woody, before one of the Pokéballs in my belt suddenly released a red beam of light on its own, returning Woody to his Pokéball. I tried sending out the rest of my team, only to no avail. It was like the Pokéballs storing my Pokémon had turned into cages that could not be escaped.
To make matters worse, I could hear a voice emitting from my Pokétalk, but it was not from the Dusclops. Instead, the familiar little girl's voice from earlier ringed my ear, "Play with me… play with me!"
Not wanting to succumb, I ran, with all my strength, towards the door, eventually making it just before the Dusclops could catch up. However, the little girl read me like a book, as the door would not budge no matter how hard I tried. It was definitely locked by an immovable, powerful force.
I had definitely, against my own will, messed with the wrong person.
The Dusclops got into a comfortable attacking range before it fired its right hand at me for a Shadow Punch attack. I closed my eyes, half-accepting my fate.
However, seconds had passed, and I felt no pain on any parts of my body. I opened my eyes again, only to see a quadrupedal, mammalian Pokémon with a primarily white feline-like body by my side, who seemed to have fended off the Dusclops temporarily. I recognized the Pokémon as Absol, the Disaster Pokémon. It looked at me with a worried expression, like it was asking me whether I was okay.
"I-I'm okay. Thanks, Absol." I said, which made it slightly more relieved. However, its expression quickly turned serious as it looked towards the Dusclops, who was relentless in finishing off its target: me.
The silence only maintained for a brief moment before both Pokémon charged towards each other and exchanged their attacks towards each other. Absol was trying its best to make a dent in Dusclops' health using a series of Night Slash attacks with its claws. However, most likely due to the little girl's influence, the Dusclops fended the Absol off quite well as the latter struggled to create an opening, the Dusclops was also relentless in its use of Shadow Punch attacks, the unmissable move hitting the Dark type Pokémon a number of times. The Ghost type Pokémon definitely had the upper hand advantage.
The Absol seemed to have noticed the disadvantage it was at, as she turned back and looked at me for a moment, before barely saying two words.
"...Your command." A deep, feminine voice appeared from my Pokétalk.
I knew she wanted me to lead her in battle, and took no time in scanning her with my Pokédex to check out her moveset. [Absol, the Disaster Pokémon. It sharply senses even subtle changes in the sky and the land to predict natural disasters. It is a long-lived Pokémon that has a life-span of 100 years.]
After briefly checking out her moves, I quickly analyzed what I could do as Dusclops approached Absol for another Shadow Punch attack. Instantly, I yelled, "Absol, use Protect!"
The Dark type Pokémon took no time in forming a protective barrier with just enough size to cover around her. Luckily, it was enough as the barrier broke upon the impact of the Shadow Punch, with Absol mostly unscathed.
Before the Dusclops could make a quick recovery, I followed up, "Absol, now! Use Night Slash!"
The timing was almost impeccable as Absol's claws landed their slashes right at the middle of Dusclops' body, dealing a super effective attack towards the Ghost type.
However, the possessed Dusclops shook off the pain and lunged itself right at the Absol, shouting in a startling fashion as it intended to land an Astonish attack. It appeared difficult for Absol to make a successive dodge from the attack, so I quickly decided to turn a disadvantage into a potential opportunity.
"Absol, charge and use Payback!"
Just in time, the Dusclops raised its arms in the air and made a frightening face in front of Absol as shadows appeared around its body. The Dark type Pokémon appeared slightly startled by the sight, but remained silent as purple waves of energy surrounded her. Absol then immediately slammed the Dusclops with her horn with incredible force, as the Dusclops retreated while wincing in pain from the critical hit. The tides had definitely turned under Absol and I's temporary partnership.
"Finish Dusclops off with Psycho Cut!"
A purple, crescent-like blade of energy was formed from Absol's horn before it was launched towards Dusclops at full speed. It seemed that all the battling under the evil soul's possession finally made Dusclops reach its limit, as its exhausted figure took the full power of the Psycho Cut attack and collapsed, the purple flames surrounding it finally fully distinguished by our efforts.
There was no satisfaction, but only relief from me that it was finally all over. I looked at Absol with a grateful smile, to which she responded with a firm nod. However, the peace was short-lived as my Pokétalk emitted the familiar voice I did not want to hear again.
"...If you're not willing to play with us… Then I'll just force you to join our side!" She apparently still had one last trick up her sleeves, and my suspicions unfortunately came true. The moment she finished talking, I heard loud rumbling sounds from above and looked up, to see large boulders falling from the peak of Mt. Pyre towards me.
My brain froze at that very moment, and I had close to no time to get away from the rockslide.
I might die here.
For the second time of the day, I closed my eyes and accepted the inevitable conclusion, but fate was challenged once again. A strong force suddenly pushed me away, before thundering sounds of boulders making contact with the ground were heard. I opened my eyes, saw myself barely injured, and instantly ran towards the chaotic scene to find the wild Absol fainted on the ground, with broken pieces of boulders scattered around her.
After making sure Mt. Pyre had quieted down for the time being, I walked over to her and wanted to check her condition, before one of my Pokéballs shook slightly violently in my belt. I sent out the Pokémon in that Pokéball, who revealed herself to be Grace. She then closed her eyes in front of the wild Absol as a pink wave of energy surrounded the Dark type.
When Grace reopened her eyes, she looked towards me and said, "Don't worry too much, Lows. I've just done a thorough examination on her condition, and I don't think she had any serious internal injuries."
"That's reassuring to hear… Thanks, Grace." I gratefully said as I took out two Super Potions from my backpack and sprayed them towards the wild Absol. Fortunately, the medicine worked its magic, as Absol regained her consciousness just shortly. She still kept her guard up as she examined around the area, before her expression finally softened and gave a thankful nod to Grace and I for healing her.
I rechecked the details of this wild Absol through my Pokédex, and her reserved behavior was explained by her Quiet Nature. I initiated the conversation, "I should be thanking you, Absol! Without your help, I would've been either taken away by the Dusclops, or gotten crushed by the rockslide and be in a different world already."
Grace followed along with a grateful bow, "I was worried when I could not come out of the Pokéball during the encounter, but you came to Lows' rescue at just the right time. Thus, allow me to express my utmost thanks for saving our Trainer when we couldn't."
The Absol did not reply, but we could tell that she liked our appreciation through the soft smile on her face. Afterwards, we walked towards the door connecting the interior and exterior section of the mountain, and this time, I was able to open the door normally, proving that the strange power previously forcing the door closed was finally no more.
Despite that, oddly, there was still a heavy feeling that lingered in my chest. Before leaving, Grace and I waved at the wild Absol as I said, "We're gonna leave now, Absol. Take care, okay?"
The sadness in Absol's eyes was too obvious for me to not notice, but she still forced a smile and extended her claws to wave us goodbye.
The feeling inside my chest felt even heavier than before. At that moment, I knew what I needed to do.
Instead of returning to the interior section of Mt. Pyre, I dashed closer towards the Absol, took out a Pokéball and said, "Absol… I feel that the battle we had with the Dusclops was special, and I think you'd fit into our team perfectly. We have very welcoming Pokémon here, so don't worry about not fitting in."
Her sad expression was no more when she realized what I was going to suggest. I continued, "Absol, would you like to join my team?"
It took her no time to reply with a calm and simple, "Yes."
"That's settled, then." I happily smiled as I threw the Pokéball towards the Disaster Pokémon, "Welcome to the team, Shadow."
Absol, now Shadow, smiled as she let herself make contact with the Pokéball. The ball captured her and shook three times with no resistance.
It was then, I finally knew the meaning behind the fortune cookie note.
The sky was already turning dark when I returned to the glamorous Lilycove City. The crowd around the city never subsided, but unlike their beaming energy, I was exhausted and just wanted to head back to my room to rest up.
I walked into the PokéCentre, planning to first heal my Pokémon, but notice a familiar face with his spiky short blonde hair and sapphire eyes.
"Harry?" I asked.
The Dewford native looked towards me, confirming my guess. "...Guess we meet again."
"Challenging the Lilycove Gym, I assume?"
"...Well, that too, I guess." Harry replied, "Dad called me here to participate in a meeting tomorrow, saying that I can probably be of help with my Trainer skills. It was… kinda bothersome, to be honest, but I couldn't really say no to Dad."
"Is it really okay leaking such crucial information to me?" I joked.
"I mean, you're joining the meeting too, so I don't see why not." Harry said, "My father told me about it."
I assumed word probably had already spread among the participants of the meeting about my attendance. I wonder how big sis will react…
"Thought I could surprise you tomorrow." I said, "Do you know about the details of the meeting?"
"...More or less." He shrugged. It seemed that Brawly did not spare any details about the recent happenings when it came to his son.
"I'll see you tomorrow, then." I simply waved my right hand and prepared to return to my room. Harry looked like he wanted to say something encouraging, but in the end, he changed his mind and said, "...Better not drag us down, whatever that we're doing soon."
I chuckled in response. I knew that he did not have any ill intent in that sentence based on his tone, free of his previous arrogance and egotism. It just looked like he would still need more time to permanently switch his way of interacting with me.
Well, some steps in the right direction, at least.
I went back to my room, ate a simply-prepared meal, and lied down on the bed as I blankly stared at the ceiling, recalling what happened at Mt. Pyre, which was definitely a traumatic experience. Nowhere close to Petalburg Woods incident level of trauma, but still an experience I would not forget in a while.
I hope I never see that little girl ever again… Not like I'm ever returning to Mt. Pyre on my own accord again, anyway.
Eventually, my eyes felt heavier and heavier, and I lost consciousness to rest up for tomorrow's big meeting.
At the peak of Mt. Pyre, amidst the darkness, the little girl sighed as she petted her Vulpix and Chimecho, "...Looks like I've failed again."
However, the sinister grin returned to her face once again before she continued.
"But don't worry. With the powers I have, and less nuisance like that Absol in my way…
Soon, someone will become our friend and play with us, stay with us…
FOREVER."
Her Pokémon simply cried in agreement.
A new day would soon come, and maybe, a new target will also soon emerge.
